Hi,
I'm in the market for a well priced dual sim android phone. After a bit of research I think I might settle with the moto g 2014 dual sim because of it's excellent after sales ota update support and large custom rom comunity. I'm fairly new to android (havent owned an android phone before) thus I would like to ask two questions if anyone cares to help me.
I have seen relatives with a samsung galaxy s5 boasting about their "ultra power saving mode" which enables them to use their device for 16 days+ rather than the normal 16-24hrs as with most smartphones today. My previous phone was a dual sim nokia with a standby time of 61 days, so this ability of the new samsung is very attractive to me. My questions are:
1) Is there something simmilar to samsungs ultra power saving mode which can be obtained through the modding comunity?
If not, is there a ability for me to build a custom ultra power saving rom (black and white screen, no apps, only calling and texting, email and camera), because I really dont care for anything else.
2) if none of the above is possibe with the moto g 2014 dual sim, is there any other dual sim android phone that you would rather advise me to look at.
Thank you for your time
Ps I have university coding background

Deciding between the Moto X 2014 and the Nexus 6. I have a preference for the larger screen of the Nexus 6, but also like the idea of the Motorola Value Added Software (Touchless, Car Mode, Moto Voice, etc). Nexus 6 doesn't run this software. Looking for current Moto X 2014 owners to give me their impression of how important/useful the Motorola Suite of Value Added Software is, and how much weight I should give to this in my comparison/decision.
I know we will be a little biased, but you will get a near nexus/stock android experience on the moto X plus the extra useful features that are exclusive to moto devices. The active display notifications and touchless commands really make this a stellar device along with more than sufficient hardware.
The Active Display is great, I use it all the time. Even after the L update I disabled Google's new lock screen to use it instead. It's not as nice looking but the battery savings and ability to see notifications without touching the screen are great, plus it pretty much negates the entire need for the power button to wake it which is really convenient.
Not all of the features are quite as useful as that but I'm glad they're there. The car mode is cool if I get a text while driving as it reads it aloud without me needing to touch it.
moto display is just simply awesome, it's basically life changing from previous 2 phones past couple years:
iphone 4: had to press home button every time just to see if any notification(even jb and put on notification bar app with cydia)
moto g: light was on but i didn't know if it was email or actual text etc, so i still had to click the rocker or pick it up(gravity screen/xposed mod to get these, otherwise pressing power button again)(get like 20 email/day i just simply ignore most and just check once a day at the most)
now Moto x: just wave it or move my phone and see any messaging/call i miss
moto voice: i drive 10+hrs a week routinely and too lazy to put on music sometimes and just listen to musics on radio. I would call on the phone and just ask what music it is and pick it up later when i get back home etc. Without reaching my hand to phone feels alot safer. Send message with whatsapp needs a little simplified as reply or something to get it a little more useful
moto assist: text reading is not bad but i wish they do the same to fb messenger and whatsapp as well, that would be awesome
Active Display its godlike, i love that i just need to pass my hand over my phone to see notifications.
As first i didnt think i would use Voice Controls that much, but there are some situations when its just soo good. Driving, setting up alarms when on bed, etc...
Not to mention the hardware its pretty much top of the line, and the build quality too
But its the extra features that are the highlight of the phone, and what mskes it stand out of the oh so typical high end device
I bought the moto x for it voice control eventhough it isn't available in my language but it is very useful driving
Moto suite is the only reason I'm going to keep my Moto X and pass on the N6. It's that important to me. It changes how I use a phone now and I know I would miss it if I didn't have it. The first time you're in the shower and a phone call or a text comes in and you can have a full conversation with either without having to touch your phone. It's incredible.
Looks like most (so far) find these features more useful than I first thought. Special thanks to those who are putting in detailed impressions (I just pressed the "Thanks Button" for you ). Any further impressions are deeply appreciated!
If the moto specific features are the only thing holding you back from getting a Nexus 6, then go for the nexus 6 you won't miss them all that much as the nexus 6 now has some sort of replacement features via ambient display and always on google now.
I got the moto x considering its price, size and the extra features, fast updates. But in your case I'd recommend the N6 if the price and size aren't a problem
Hi,
I have read the comments in amazon and also seen the reviews of Lenovo ZUK Z1 indian unit.
i found there are some issues like :-
-near the home button right side led light is not working properly.
-there are some heating issues in normal usage also.
-it hangs when we are in a call and there is only one way i.e. reboot of device.
-i also found comments saying that there is much difference between indian unit and other unit.
According to specs the hardware is realy good in this price segment but still some comments are saying its not worth to buy it.
Can anyone suggests wether i should go for Lenovo ZUK z1 (indian unit) or not.
I'm fairly happy with my ZUK Z1! I myself dide any of the issues you described, though I did have a major battery issue which I had to get fixed. Much more detail below;
The capacitive buttons' LED lights are just small white dots - they are a bit dim and hard to see outside (I believe that's just the way they are on the device). Regardless they do work fine - though I personally prefer on-screen buttons (navbar), which is an awesome option on Cyanogen which I do use (together with the physical home button). Phone does not feel hot to me (compared to other Android I tried - such as Sony Xperia Z3 Compact and LG G4 which did get confidently hotter). Calls work fine. I have no experience at all with the Indian version, I just had the International version with Cyanogen OS.
Now the problem I did have was that the battery my device came with was screwed up. The phone would turn off at random times and often display inaccurate battery percentages (e.g. fluctuating percentages, or phone displaying 1% for hours). It was really bad, a serious fault. Thankfully I was able to get it fixed for free thru warranty - since I bought it from a local store with 1 year warranty coverage (which was extremely useful for once). They replaced my battery for free and now it works great!
So that being said - there is indeed always a risk of getting a device with a hardware fault. Budget devices like this may be more prone to QA issues but remember that devices of any type or price occasionally have unit faults like that. Also keep in mind that people who have these issues are more likely to shout online than people who don't.
Overall though - I am quite happy with this device. It is fast and snappy, the battery life is indeed very good (lasts me a day and a half of fairly heavy usage) and I also like the fingerprint sensor (though I've had some mixed results with it. My tip is to make sure you initially scan your finger as best and fully as you can). I like the stock+ Android feel with Cyanogen OS (though Cyanogen are taking their sweet time with the Marshmallow update for this device! Though there are good custom ROMs for this device including CM13). I can recommend it.
If you can get it with warranty I say it's really a good choice, especially as a decent warranty can remove your worries. If I'd consider another device it would Xiamoi Redmi 3 Note Pro, which has similar specs but with a newer, better more efficient Snapdragon chip. There is also the ZUK Z2, but I think it's a shame that it has a smaller battery.
It's a decent phone but I wouldn't recommend it. A lot of people have problems with the home button (mine included) the fingerprint scanner doesn't work anymore. Cos has some nice features but the security patch is from last month and still no word on when we receive marshmallow.
My 2 cents, do yourself a favor, forget this phone unless it's free or very good bargain, it was promising at the start, end up as nightmare for most owners, just read some of the thread, every components has some issues, sound, GPS, home bottom, screen, battery, charging, COs patches, you name it.
Yeah, this phone turned out to be a huge disappointment. I faced issues with the original unit as well as the replacement unit. Eventually, I returned it and got myself a refund.
1. Back button led is dimmer than the menu button led. This is really annoying if you're used to the capacitive buttons. Even though it's a mid-range phone, this is not something that I'd expect because Rs.13,500 is still a good amount of money.
2. The phone has very obvious heating issues, especially near the top. Even when idle, temps refused to drop below 37-38 degrees. While charging, it was easily crossing the 50 degree mark. While running apps, it was crossing 60 degrees. My first unit became warm in my pocket for no reason at all.
3. The replacement unit that I received had vibration issues. The vibration kept turning off randomly. It used to turn back on after a few seconds.
4. Adaptive brightness is very slow. It takes a good 3-4 seconds for the ambient sensor to recognize the change in light intensity. I turned it off immediately.
5. Double tap to wake stops working after some time and you have to soft reboot the phone to get it to work again. However, I did not face this issue with the replacement unit.
6. The fingerprint sensor is not really as accurate and fast as the company claims it to be. The fact that you have to press the home button to wake the phone first adds to the time taken to unlock the phone. The fact that the home button isn't exactly soft does not help. More often than not, I had to keep my finger placed on the home button even after waking the device just to get it to recognize my fingerprint.
7. This one's a minor con but the ZUK printed below Lenovo on the back was slanted and not aligned perfectly below Lenovo. The print also appeared cheap and looked like it will come off pretty easily.
Considering the OPO has pretty much the same specs, I don't understand why the ZUK Z1 is plagued with so many issues. Also, in all the online reviews, the international version of the phone didn't seem to have all the above issues. Kinda makes me wonder if Lenovo has cut corners for the Indian launch of the phone, hence, the lower than the international version pricing.
Honestly, at this point, there's not much point in buying this phone. There are better and cheaper options available. Not to mention, some great phones will be coming out in the next couple of months, so it'd be better if you're willing to wait.

very happy with this phone. after a day's work, i still have about 50% of juice. I've had xiaomi, LG, Xperia in the past. this phone just rocks.
using zuk z1
wouldnt recommend. breaking home button and missing software support and updates ... if my homebutton is broken i will swap it at amazon und buy another phone.
anybody solved the problem of failed recognition (zuk z1 = sony xperia z1). is it possible that that is the reason for google play store some apps show me that my device is not supported?
Hello World,
I have been working (and sometimes labouring) with my trusty work horse tablet SM P900 for almost 18 months now. And despite numerous disappointments (USB OTG w/o charging?!), it has been a mostly satisfying ride.
But since more than a few weeks now, I am starting to notice a slow down in memory intensive applications. It is almost as if the interal storage is acting up whilst reaching its EOL.
Actions that are not CPU intensive at all seem to be hanging, until all of a sudden they break loose and everything seems to be working normal again - until next time. And this happens more and more frequently. I tried to "trim" myself out of this mess, but by now I can't see any real difference here no more.
I tried in vain to find a replacement board for the internal storage, but alas replacement parts for the P900 seem to be very, very hard to obtain in the first place.
If anyone here has some useful suggestion, then I all ears (BTW: I have been using a slimed down custom ROM from day one and I am very picky about what apps I allow to run in the background. So its absolutely no SW issue).
Now I am also willing to entertain the idea of a new purchase, but try as I may I could not find a worthy successor to the P900. Samsung itself seems to have given all but up on this line and all the competition doesn't life up to my expectations.
These are:
1) It *must* be running on USB 5V power - anything else would be a deal breaker for me.
2) It should be running on an ARM CPU, but I could do with an Intel as well.
In any case, it is ARM based, then there has to be some custom Android ROM available for it (I hate stock bloated stock firmware).
It it is Intel, then it needs to have Linux support - somewhere out there!
3) The Display should be HD and somewhat comparable with the P900 specs.
4) The unit must be tablet capable, best with notes like stylus support. So now fixes keyboard and the like.
5) For ARM/Android based RAM must be 3GB minimum and internal storage 64GB min.
6) There must be an option to insert an extra micro SDXC card (deal breaker).
If anyone knows of a manufacturer who can match my desires, I am very much open to suggestions right now.
I don't normally comment on phones but this is my first Huawei phone (I did have a Huawei watch a few years ago). Despite the relatively hard to obtain device in North America, the*Mate 20 RS*is the most technically advanced phone out there and in 2019 I expect Huawei to continue their technical lead. I have resisted using Huawei phones in the past (partially due to potentially security concerns but also with other phones being better - from my perspective). However the P20 earlier in 2018 was tempting but the Porsche Design version of the Mate 20 Pro was irresistible, especially as I fortunate enough to be able to obtain one at an airport store (far below the high prices eBay is currently showing).
Quick Review*
Overall the Mate 20 RS is fast, highly configurable and a joy to use and look at. The battery life is the best I have ever had on any device (without a supplementary battery case). Moreover I am on the Dec 2018 security release of Android Pie (so Huawei seems to be keeping up to date).*
I had an issue with the Summit 2 after I upgraded to Android 9.0 (on my prior device).* This was sufficiently concerning that I started to look for a new phone as I suspected it was specific to Android 9.0 on my specific phone. The battery drain on the Summit 2 was severely reduced from Android 8.0 to 9.0 (on the same phone). On Android 8 (same phone) the Summit 2 battery life was OK.*
After switching to the Mate 20 RS, the battery on the Summit 2 has been really good. I can't really explain it other than potential differences in Android 9.0 and bluetooth. Regardless I am very happy with the battery life of the Summit 2 with the Mate 20 RS!
A Developer's Perspective
As a developer I did find a few things:
Hooking up to ADB on my Surface Laptop 2 was not immediate. Huawei does things differently - including default options.
Notification Lister Service - Specific to Huawei phones I had a heck of a time every time I updated my app (while debugging). I was able to implement a manual workaround but Huawei seemed to behave differently than other Android phones. Interestingly, in their latest .171 firmware update, the issues now seems fixed!
TTS and Sensor Detection - My speak TTS only when lying flat did not work. I eventually traced it to my logic that seemed to work on all other Android devices but not on Huawei. Admittedly it was my logic bug, but the Sensor readings from Huawei appears to be different (perhaps staleness/caching to effect performance/battery savings). It turned out well as I was forced to fix my logic bugs and now the features works really well for me.
Should I be concerned about these messages from LogCat ? : )
A need to focus on Software
The Mate 20 RS is a beauty as a hardware device. One key area to improve is on the software side. Huwaei seemed to have made some interesting decisions on default options, what options to not allow to be configured and design choices.
Settings are highly configurable but some default settings seem to not be intuitive (or at least consistent with other Android Devices).
Battery Information - they provide a LOT of information. They should look at Sony on how they provide estimated time remaining (graph). Moreover have multiple menus to drill into power consumption seem more complex than it should be.
Always On Display - it is too restrictive - allowing 3rd party apps to show information should be allowed.
Buggy? - I cannot get the "Magazine Unlock" to work as it initially did (after I installed a few 3rd party themes).
Bloatware - there are to many redundant apps - Huawei doesn't really need to have their own version of every app. Instead focus those resources on making the other areas world class to have a truly world class hardware/software product!
The Smart Screen hides the LED notification - perhaps design the next version to show it.
English Canada does not seem to be supported in the key Huawei app!
What will be Next Phone?
I typically change phones 2-3 times a year. However in 2019 I am looking forward to the Sony XZ4, the next Mate 30 Pro and Foldable phones. Note I also carry an Apple Watch 4 (LTE) that needs to be connected to an Apple phone (X) that I don't really use/carry otherwise. A key feature for me is battery life. Huawei leads in terms of battery life but I don't think I can yet get to a magical 2-day battery life with the Mate 20 RS. My next device would need to be at least as good (which will be very challenging IMO).
Hi guys
I am currently using a Z5 since its release in September 2015. Now I want to buy a new device.
I think about buying the Xperia 10 but I am struggling a bit. How do you like this phone? Is it worth an "upgrade". What about performance? Is it comparable or even better than my Z5's?
My Z5 has stereo speakers in the front. The Xperia 10 has one speaker at the bottom. How does it sound like?
My Z5 got a new mainboard, camera and battery in 2017.
I like the fact that it has the fingerprint sensor on the side. I don't like it on the back.
Thanks for your advice.
Hey, I was just in your shoes. Unless your z5 is annoying you too much, I'd avoid getting this phone and wait for next gen. Here's my experience.
Had the z5c, and got fed up with slowing performance and battery life, and replaced camera lens last year (build up of film causing blurry images) only for it to require another replacement less then a year later again. I bought Xperia 10 and likely will trade up for a 5g phone within the year.
I can deal with the long length. But 21:9 is just unnecessary. I don't need cinematic Netflix experience on my phone. I don't like seeing black bars now on all YouTube videos since hardly anyone uploads into that ratio. I could enjoy the split screen but it's gotten complicated to activate in Pie.
I bought this phone because: price, side button unlock, familiar OS (which was not correct, Pie is way different). Here's what I can't get used to:
No longer simple to move current app into split screen (recent apps button removed in android Pie), no way to get do not disturb activated from volume rocker (must create and use a shortcut which is inconvenient when I'm in meetings), finger print sensor is no longer on power button (separate on Xperia 10) which leads to accidentally unlocking in my pocket if my hand in holding my phone, no longer possible to change long pressing home button to activate preferred Duckduckgo search.
I'm tolerating the phone. But I refuse to buy anything more expensive and don't like the girthy phones from nearly every other company. And not buying Apple (have an apple for work phone and hate it)
Hope this helps

Thanks. I already decided to buy the Pixel 2 XL.
