I was wondering if anyone else was having a problem with their speakers on the Nexus 6 when receiving calls or messages?
Randomly my ringtones & notifications come in crackling as if the speakers are blown. It doesn't happen much but it's kinda annoying. I think the speakers are fine because playing music or watching videos at max volume sounds great.
Any feedback is greatly appreciated
I have also had this issue. I'm running stock rooted with no mods. Would like to hear If anyone else is having this issue as well. Also would this issue be addressed in the new 5.0.1 update?
I am having issues hearing the conversion tone when sending or receiving messages via WhatsApp. The notification rings but within a chat it doesn't play any sound. Is this happening to anyone else? It's driving me crazy.
Same thing here. Especially with FB Messenger.
There definitely seems to be some static or degradation on some of the notification sounds and ringtones. I noticed the same thing.
I think it has an overactive EQ/Preamp type of ordeal going on. I think there is some sort of software built in that is trying to act like a DSP to save the speakers. For Example just turn up your volume to max and keep hitting the up volume. You will probably notice the volume beep will change volume several times throughout that. it will also be noticeable when playing music.
I have also noticed some strange crackling that I never had on previous Nexus devices. I am certain it is software and hope for an update to resolved it. I also noticed that many of the things going through the speakers slowly get louder. For instance, hit the speakerphone button while in a call and it starts at like 50% volume and goes to max in about 5 seconds. Kind of a strange fade up that I haven't had before...

I also noticed the gradual increase in volume on everything including alarms. Glad it's a common issue that will hopefully be addressed in a future software update.
Thanks everyone for your feedback.

I am having an issue with the stereo speakers on my Nexus 6. Every time I listen to music, watch a you tube video or watch a movie on my nexus 6 device, I notice that when I put it on maximum volume it will get loud then suddenly drop down to between 30 to 50%. I'm not sure what is the deal with that, but I can tell you its freaking annoying. Also been having issues with the fade in as well.
Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Sorry, I haven't had that problem. Since updating to 5.0.1 I've noticed that my original problem hasn't been happening for calls or alarms. It still does happen with the clock app though. What version are you on?
Ever since i updated to 5.0.1

I would like to see some of the Viper4Android users chime in. I am hoping V4A fixes all these issues...
What is the probem??

Same issue. On CM12. Uugh.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
anyone had this issue sorted yet. today i noticed while using speaker phone there is a static sound and low voice volume any ideas
Viper did not fix the issue
I'm thinking its hardware as I have tried stock and benzo ROM. Nothing seems to fix my low volume issue
Mine does this after flashing kernels or roms sometimes. A clean flash back to stock then reflash rom/kernal with extreme beats fixes it. I've had 3 nexus 6s and they all did this. Even when I flash stock image it don't sound quite right until I flash extreme beats 4.1. Viper has only caused problems for me.
Crackle is noticeable
I noticed the crackle sound straight out of the box simply by testing out some ringtones. This had me disappointed but even worse if I start to think I got a defective unit. It's weird because the problem does not happen very often and it's an issue that I can't demonstrate so easily, but it's there. Reading this post about people having the same problems makes me believe that there could be a update or software solution. By the way, playing music sounds great, the thing happens mostly with game sounds and ringtones.
Couple of questions. So far, I absolutely love my Nexus 6, however I have a couple of questions/quibbles.
Firstly, the volume on this thing. How quiet/loud is it supposed to be? When it's in the low end scales it's very, very quiet, middle is passable, loud is good, but is the quieter levels supposed to be so quiet? I compared it to an iPad 3 and that speaker is louder overall, I assumed the Nexus 6 would be louder everywhere (highest level very loud, lower end quiet but loud enough to hear) than the 3 year old iPad?
Secondly, the microphone. I'm a little confused by it. In videos I've recorded the mic volume is good enough, but using WhatsApp I things I've recorded sound quiet, at least compared to iPhone recordings (friends have iPhone's), and then it's slightly better in "Easy Voice Recorder", unless I whack up the gain on it.
What's the deal? Or are all Nexus 6's like this?
Also, what's the battery life supposed to be like?
I'm on fairly low brightness, auto adaptive brightness or whatever is off. Unplugged at 8am, its been 12 hours. On 22%. Used the phone 20mins browsing internet going to work, stuck in my drawer till 1pm with occasional checks, 20mins used it playing Jetpack Joyride/internet browsing, home from about 4, been playing music on and off through Google Play, couple of YouTube videos, browsing the web etc, nothing too intensive, and I'm on 22%. Does that sound right?
Anybody?
Yeah, you my friend have had the 2 most common problems with the nexus which come standard with the device. For battery, you need to get a kernel with intelliplug and enable it over the stock mp decision. You can even overclock with battery life better than stock. (Like me) For audio, try to find a kernel with faux sound, download viper4android for music, and change some values around in mixer.paths.xml. You need to be rooted with a recovery first before any of this. The problem with video recording is that it is also recorded in mono instead of stereo. Weird but I have been able to fix all of these problems now. If you need any help, quote me. Please give a thanks if I solved your issues.
Thanks for reply.
So what I've described aren't necessarily problems as such, they're just standard on the phone? The battery is okay it's just not amazing. I'm on 50% now, unplugged 14 hours ago, used it for a bit of internet browsing, texting. Was on standby for about 9 hours and was on a call this morning for about half an hour and then I've done some more browsing and texting today. I'm also on adaptive brightness.
Does this sound right?
And the microphone, if I use it on WhatsApp, people keep saying it sounds clear, it's just very low. But again, if I record a video it comes through fine.
Is this normal to Nexus 6's or is there something wrong with my mic?
really low here to in whatsapp, can somone please help us? i do not want to have to send my phone back!

Same issue here. The mic volume in all IM apps like whatsapp, Skype and etc are very very low. However the voice in the recorded video is OK.

yep thats what im getting....anyone else?
Yeah that's really annoying. The problem is, that the N6 use the mic at the bottom on the rear site. If want to make a videochat with the frontcam it's really stupid.
Normally it use the rear mic to reduce background noise. But this seems to work only with telephone calls?
Did anyone ever solve this problem?
Would a Bluetooth headset be a "fix"?

It is default mechanism.
You can install 3rd party Sound recording app and forward recordings to them.
Hi everyone, I have some speaker issues in my n6. The front dual speakers are fantastic and hands down the best I have ever used in any smartphone, but whenever my phone's battery level drops below 70%, the speaker volume automatically decreases, without me having to manually lower don the volume.
Whenever this thing happens with me , I immediately check the volume panel and there it says that its already max. Then when the phone's battery level drop to around 30%, the speaker volume decreases significantly as if I am listening to at half the volume and the volume panel still shows the volume to be at the max.
At first I thought, it must be a hardware issue, but that wasn't the case. when i watch videos on MX player, this problem doesn't seem to occur at all even if the battery is less than 10%. This problem only occurs whenever I use a music player. Earlier I used google play music, then I changed to sony walkman and I have also tried various other music players from the playstore as well but the problem always persists.
I even changed my roms for months , but still no luck.
My question to you guys is, does it happen with anyone else? How can I fix this issue if its not common?
Your help will be appreciated

After about 10 minutes of playing a game, I notice the bottom speaker dip in volume considerably. The audio then becomes "hollow" sounding. This happened to me with both Real Racing 3 and Bowling by Jason Belmonte, with Dolby Atmos on. Restarting the app immediately fixes the issue, and playing music doesn't have the issue either. Just restarted the phone and will test it out again later with Atmos turned off.
hmm - I tried again with Dolby Atmos turned off and the same thing happened (playing Bowling by Jason Belmonte in this case). I thought it was Dolby Atmos not turning on properly but after hearing this it doesn't seem to be the problem. It could still have to do with having two audio apps running, as my Samsung Music app was still running in the notifications but paused. First I was worried there was something wrong with the speaker but I'm convinced this is a software issue. If I reopen the app or play audio from another app, the volume eventually returns to normal. It's really intermittent - sometimes I can play a game for 10-20 minutes.
I had this once when playing Eternium.
No idea how this happened but it was 2 weeks ago and it didn't happen anymore since then.
At least I'm not the only one. I don't recall it happening with the Samsung Music app on it's own but it did occur with YouTube Vanced. Are you using Snapdragon or Exynos? How long were you playing the game when it occurred ?

I have the 512GB Exynos version. I was playing it for over 30 minutes when it happened.
Still happening to me on the latest ARJ1 update. Apparently this has been reported on Snapdragon variants as well. It could be more widespread but people just aren't noticing it. On some apps like Asphalt 9, the bass just decreases in volume and the overall volume is still loud, but it sounds rather muffled and compressed if you listen carefully. There's some debate as to whether it's a software or hardware defect, but I'm suspecting the former since audio played outside of the app in question is typically still loud on the bottom speaker.

Hi. I recently updated my Redmi note 10 pro to MIUI 13.0.1 and have noticed my phone trips off suddenly whenever a loud sound plays on my phone speakers. I can play any sound, movie or music, as long as it's on low volume. I can play movies with low sound output on highest volume without problem, bot once a loud sound comes through the speakers, the phone goes off instantly. Bluetooth and wired headphones work flawlessly. I don't know if the update is the problem, but the problem started after the update. What could be the problem?
I noticed a very distorted sound, like a bursted speaker from the top speaker. This makes it look like a hardware problem, but I need to know if anybody has faced similar problem.
This problem also appears on my device, when playing a song at a loud volume it turns off
apakah karena pembaruan miui atau perangkat keras redmi note 10 pro berkualitas buruk?

Same problem. I changed the top speaker for one new, but nothing changes. Shutting down when loud bass sounds, and distorsioned audio in the top speaker when the volume is high
