[Q] Ribbon cable under the upper speaker cover? - HTC One Mini 2

What is it for?
I just ripped it.
Hurray for me!

Looks like the antenna, have you noticed any difference in signal strength since tearing it?

I was going to change the LCD... I cannot check...
On youtube they say it's a antenna, but not which one.

no gsm signal no gps signal

i recently lost my battery cover and while waiting for the replacement to arrive i noticed one day that i had no calls all day long which was strange so looking closer i noticed the ! near the antenna icon and also no gps signal at all either.upon closer inspection of every thing i notice that the antenna on the back of the phone was torn.see pic red circle shows where the tear was.so i clean it up and whip out the soldering iron and solder it back together, but it still wont work.is the antenna that sensitive that it wont work even after being soldered back together.do you think replacing the antenna with a new will fix the problem?

when you soldered, you could've damaged it further, even a little overheating can ruin it.
Also, the picture doesn't show any tearing, the places you circled is a point to release the casing in that area.

this is far fetched, but my profession and hobbies bases my know how on situations like this.
when a antenna is placed in a device like this the technicians adjust it to be resonant to specific freq. adding or removing length (like you did when you soldered) adds length to it (the antenna usually in a cell phone is brass or copper) im sure the solder you used is 60/40. so by adding more metal and changing the metals, the antenna is now resonant on diffrent freq's.
instead of giving a lecture on antenna resonation to exlplain here is a link
And like the other member said you might have overheated the board.
So hope this helped. And sorry if it didnt
the pic is not of my phone, just a pic for reference to the area.i used silver bearing solder 62/36/2.the antenna was removed from the phone before it was soldered.i guess ill wait for a replacement to arrive.right now the phone is junk with out a signal.

Well since you have a new phone in the mail nevermind, unless you want to share pics and go into specific detail of EVERYTHING you did. And maybee we can help.
Have you taken that plastic housing with the antenna off?
Or has ait had a knock?
I ask because there are small plastic lugs around that housing to keep it firmly in place. If any one of those is not fully engaged the connection with the aerials is lost and you get no signal. Of course a crack that allows enough bending will also cause the contacts to be lost.
To elaborate Look at the second picture here with the black aerial housing removed:
https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/oet/forms/blobs/retrieve.cgi?attachment_id=812152&native_or_pdf=pdf
You will see the gold coloured contacts for the aerial. Any maladjustment or lugs not engaged or a crack can cause these to loose contact with the board. If the plastic is cracked in a minor way, I'm sure you can work out a way to re-establish the contacts.
Mike
Does anyone know where to buy replacement Aerials? Mine kinda detatched itself from the plastic! :S
Please PM or message me if you do know where I can buy one or if anyone has a dead phone that they wouldn't mind selling for spares.

Do you have WM6.5 or do you have android installed on your HD2? You should have posted this in one of the general forums (HD2 WM6.5 or Android general) so I would know and could provide the app to do this.
I have NAND Android and I am currently running on HyperDroid-GBX-v12.
Please advise if there is any way to get better signal or any ROM which is known for better signal strength
Try a few different radios. You flash them just like a Windows Mobile ROM. Flashing a new radio will not erase your Android ROM or CWM or anytthing else, just replaces the radio.
I have a sticker like this just over the antenna, it gave me 1 bar more in a place where I had only 1-2 i reached 2-3 bars in Android.

I want to think it works, it was less than $1usd, so it won't hurt and it is not visible.

You will keep running into problems. Switch from WIND to a better network. If you don't need Data. Chat-r is brilliant. I Just did the same a week ago. Life is much easier.

Lol, those stickers don't do anything amigo. Ask yourself "how does a piece of gold painted plastic boost my phone's ability to receive or transmit a signal?"
Placebo effect at best.

The signal levels in this video are my exactly experience.
It is cooper I think help to "concentrate" more signal to the antenna (in/out).
Probably just works with the GSM(2G) signal -which I always use-
I have been using it for +7 years now (total cost < $3usd).
edit: If anyone plan to buy it.. don't spend more than $1. there are some crazy prices out there.

OK did a 5 min test w/o and W the sticker on my HD2 running on 2G t-mobile USA in the exactly same place.
W/o the sticker:
-77dbm 18asu
With the sticker:
-73dbm 20asu
Again only 2G (3G might get worst) and don't pay more than $1
the technical idea behind those stickers is real. the sticker itself is a thin copper foil. When hit by EM radiation it will provide a greater surface contact and will radiate the EM energy on it's own. It's a bit complicated, i cannot explain it in english.
However think of it like when you have a piece of metal placed near a magnet. Even if the piece of metal is not magnetic by itself it can become magnetized and will attract other pieces of metal by its own even if the original magnet was removed.

Good to hear that I'm not living a lie having those stickers. I knew that that weird design , which looks like aliens did it, has some engineering on it.
By the way, i have not try to improve my signal via software bc in my simple mind to do something that works you need to fool the phone to think it has always low signal, therefore forcing it to "radiate" more and improve my reception.
I have the phone in my pocket.. and I don't want a free vasectomy.

The functionality is "induced electromagenticity". The radio signal crosses the thin copper on sticker and induces current. This current reproduces voltage which beams signal again. Something like a relay functionality. ...for poor man

No, it has to be close to the antenna so I placed in the plastic area where the "void" screw is and the sticker will cover a little of the sim, the hd2 antenna is around there. I didn't want to stick it(bc it interferes with the sim, etc) so I carefully placed and put some tape in the edges of the sticker so it wont move.
All this is under the metal battery door.
attached sketch.
Many thanks, it's worth a try!

I see only comments about the sticker thing. Not about the flash. I really doubt the signal will be any better with the *.apk provided in above post. RIL tweaks seem to be the better choice because it depends very much on where you live (at least so it seems from other posts).

[Q] radio/antenna quality?

It's probably too early to answer this question, so maybe this thread will be a placeholder. But does anyone have any experience using the One where reception is weak? Are the tiny plastic windows enough for the antenna to work? how is signal strength in general?
Thanks!
People who have been to HTC events have tested this. I will try when I go to the event in newcastle on thursday. They said they couldnt get it to drop a bar.

It does not use the tiny plastic antennas, it uses the top and bottom pieces of metal.
the radio/atenna quality is excellent, tried it with calls/gps/wifi. locks fast with wifi and gps and calls and loud and clear

HTC One WiFi death-grip

Hi guys,
I noticed something rather strange today. My One looses its wifi signal when I hold it (upper side) with my right hand. I've made a video to demonstrate how quickly it looses the signal and regains it (when I remove my hand).
The thing is, it doesn't always loose the signal all the way. I guess it depends on the signal strength of the room I am in. If I'm next to the router the signal doesn't drop at all, but as I move away to the next room, you can see what happens.
Here's the link to the video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbprCTr4JQg&feature=youtube_gdata_player
And I was starting to believe that my One is perfect.
Just watched your video and tried it myself and yes it does loose the WiFi signal.
Suppose it's the WiFi antenna that obstructs the signal.. guess that's the way it is

the antennae are part of the back, so there is always a deathgrip, don't hold it like that it seems very unnatural anyways

I've just tried this and had no loss of signal.
I guess all phones are like this though, the antennas are in the back somewhere and depending on the phone and where you hold it your hand is going to block the signals to some extent.

I know directly gripping the antenna will affect the signal strength. But I'm gripping the sides not the back; there's not much contact with the plastic strip at the back.
And sometime when holding the phone in landscape you tend to cover those areas with your hand.. Till now, this hasn't been a 'problem' for me.
Ya it's definitely there, but it's pretty good. I had to cup both hands around it to get the signal strength really low. With one hand, I could only make it lose one bar.
I guess don't cup your hand around the antenna if you are in a place with less than ideal WiFi signal.

Ya, but the strange this was how quickly the signal dropped for me. It's not a deal breaker anyway, it's a good thing the wifi antenna isn't at the bottom!
I've just tried it and can't seem to get my signal to drop like that. It doesn't lose anything.

what about with a case? In using a basic tpu case. Androidify. It fits very tight around the phone and notice the sensitivity to WiFi and signal. I didn't notice this until I took off the case. My phone was flying. Once I put it back there was some lag time for stuff to load

[Q] [QUERY][HARDWARE][ANTENNA]Moto G XT1068 : Cellular Antenna

Hello Everyone.
Well this is not a Software development thread.
Just a thread for understanding the Cellular antenna location on the Motorola Moto G (2014) or the XT1068.
I have serious issues of signal reception at home and I've tried every phone from a Nokia 2610 to a Nexus 5 and now a Moto G XT1068. On all phones I have faced network issues.
Now, I've had enough and I was just trying to research on how to increase the reception of a mobile signal.
Of course level of maturity : Beginner (I can't really tear down the phone and create circuitry for better reception)
So here are a few pics and I just wanted to know which exactly is the antenna and it's location on the phone for cellular network reception. Reason for this is I want to place a Aluminium foil or some Copper wires (not solder!) just to increase the density of the signal or increase the path of the signal.
I might be wrong here, in understanding this. Do educate me or direct me to something that might.
Please help me with this and also do please, give some tips of how to increase the reception. And no I do not want to buy a signal repeater or a femtocell.
The first reads UMTS CDMA 1101 and is at the Bottom Left.
The second is UMTS 0918 on the Right at the Side / Edge
And the last GPS 0296 at the Top right corner.
Which indicates the Cellular antenna for mobile signal reception?
Thank You in advance.
and Happy New Year.
Its probably above the camera on the right but I doubt an aluminum foil or copper plate will work because of the gap between the antenna on the board and the plastic body but you could try what's the worst that can happen ...
couldn't that be GPS antenna?

The location like you said above the camera to the right , reads GPS 0296. I reckon it could be a GPS antenna. Can you clarify?
I also have not put an image of the Top Left side that reads, BT/WIFI 1101. This should be the Bluetooth and Wifi antenna right?
I generally dissect my phones before I buy a new one and through my experience, generally that pattern on the plastic means a Major antenna is behind it could be WiFi/gps/modem what I would tell you is cover the inside of the removable back with aluminum foil see if it works and don't bother with copper cause it may stain or cause overheating and even if the foil works it will probably increase the sr rating but its worth a shot good luck and happy new year

I think by this quote you really answer it your self, you WILL need a cell phone signal booster , which is normally a outside antenna, a booster and a internal antenna, these normal cost as much as a phone (and more) .......
TBH you can't really apply a 'FIX' to phone when that is not the problem.
You need to have a signal into home in 1st place, solving this cant be done cheaply
