Roms etc. to check out?

Howdy.
Took advantage of the latest google offer to get myself a Nexus 4 - my Razr i just had literally no development and a lot of apps wouldn't even run due to x86 architecture! Arggh!
So anyway, mine is arriving soon (hopefully) and I'd like some pointers on what to check out first - Cyanogen is always worth considering of course
I mainly look for a good kernal to save me power but not skimp out on horse power when needed - a good deep sleep/idle function
Also a lightweight rom which is very snappy, I'm sure I'll find some roms to love based on the sheer amount of development on this section! Send your suggestions in and I'll be sure to check them out! :good::good::good:

First, Franco kernel is amazing ! make sure to set governor CPU on "interactive" and GPU on "ondemand".
MBQ_'s Vanir is by far the snappiest i'v experienced (and I have flashed dem roms ).
Me personally, I find Stock + Franco to work the best.

Awesome I'll make sure to check it out! Obviously each rom is going to be good for different things but having never owned a nexus device I'm usually romming to get rid of bloatware from motorola/HTC etc. so I suppose the advantages are usually additional features for nexus devices

Exactly Best rom the has a lot of features, while maintaining preformance, stability and battery life is deffinatly Paranoid Android. They do amazing innovation in the Android field. Im flashing latest PA build as we speak.

Sounds great
Put it this way, i went from HTC desire where I could change roms weekly - finally settling on oxygen which was totally stock android and great
Then Razr i - it took 7 months or something to even get jelly bean, 0 roms and now we finally have like two to choose from? They are good in terms of i'm not a developer and i appreciate what they do, but both are riddled with bugs

So I guess my nexus ( which will hopefully arrive later) will be getting PA.
Do I unlock the bootloader with "fastboot OEM unlock" to flash custom recoveries etc? I come from a HTC phone so forgive if this question sounds stupid to you

Glad it can be of help - i dont want to take away from other developers of roms, but a starting place is always handy especially considering the sheer amount of development this phone has!

I've never really liked PA because of the different modes (phone, phablet, tablet, etc) would make if hard to modify everything easily for me (but thats cause i dont like phablet or tablet modes, prefer stock phone style)... Im using crDroid and it runs great with purified kernel. Ive tried Vanir and that one also was pretty good
You should do what i did, flash a few and test them out. They all have different variations of features...

I love customizing everything, so from the beginning I was on AOKP. Loved it but i think it was a little heavier than necessary..
after that I used Xylon - ( now Uxylon) which was awesome, smooth and fast, plenty of features.. but its still 4.2.2, so I had to leave it behind eventually.
Currently I'm on Slim Rom Beta, 4.3 and I'm loving it. So give it a try!

Rocking Purity & AK kernel today and loving it

Most of the roms are good in their own way...
if you want speed or customization...

You can also check a thread in general about a poll on which rom people are using. i mean, just based from that, you can have the number of nexus 4 users, what the best rom in common people use (you wouldn't know your best if you hadn't tried the others right?) and just a few mods also you can use that will give you what you want. Just have fun in the mako forum and all the best mate :good:

Rasbeanjelly and PSX are great if you are looking for a pure and latest AOSP experience.

Got the phone, unlocked, flashed latest pa and xposed. I'm very satisfied so far. My HTC one s didn't come close to this at all.
Now I have 2 questions. What's this JSS and JWW all about?

[Q] ROM recommendations PLZ?

I have an Atrix HD, rooted, with unlocked JB bootloader, and I've also done the MAXX battery MOD. I haven't had this phone long and it seems to be a bit laggy, and a battery hog on the stock firmware. I am not partial to JB or KK so I am pretty open to suggestions. All I am looking for is SPEED, STABILITY, and BATTERY LIFE, and of course the LEAST amount of bugs possible. TY all in advance! :good:

ROM recommendation posts are a dime a dozen around here, and the answer is always the same: figure it out for yourself by browsing the development forums for your phone, and flash the one that fits what you want.

Thanks but thats what I've been doing for the past almost 2 weeks now. I only asked because there is ALOT of developement already for this device and it looks like EVERYTHING is buggy as Hell so far so I was really looking for a USEFUL suggestion. But thanks a bunch.

No, not everything is buggy as hell. The majority of them run just fine and are good enough for daily drivers. If you installed one, you'd see for yourself.
I understand that you want a perfect ROM but there isn't one. You've gotta take what minimal bad there is with the good. Even stock ROMs have bugs.
The best advice is to flash a ROM that sounds good and see if you like it. Hell, that's half the fun!

I understand what you are saying, and I have been checking them out, I'm on CM11 now, and have tried Holoblur, and a couple others. I've went through this with literally 13 devices now so I'm not new to this. I was simply asking the community for the best ones that they have used from their experience. I have asked this question on XDA about all of my other devices and normally people respond with just what I said before. Its just a lot easier when I can narrow it down between a handful of ROMs that are DD material.

Ah yes! Had to make sure you weren't just asking for the best instead of researching for yourself! I guess I could've been a little more helpful from the beginning...
My most important feature is pie controls, second is tied with customizing options and battery, So right now, carbonROM is perfect for me. I'm running the 8/04 jbbl build and it works great.
I have the MAXX battery mod so battery isn't as important, but I still want it to last all day.
Team Gummy works well too. The only build for our jbbl phone that works is the April build 2.0. It's light and battery life is good too. Also has pie, not as many customizable options.
Those are my KitKat choices, I'm not sure of the 4.3 Roms other than the last time I had a 4.3 PAC ROM installed it worked really well with excellent battery life. 4.3 Roms are arguably the most refined, but development has shifted towards KitKat obv.
That's pretty much all I know.

That my friend is exactly what I was looking for, thank you so much for the input... I will definitely try your recommendations next. I also did the MAXX MOD on mine the other day with the EB40 battery and cutting of the inner frame, but just like you I definitely want it to be able to last all day. Lol, I know there is no perfect ROM, I just didn't wanna be crack flashing for the next couple months with as many nice sounding ROMs there are for this phone. Either way, your info is extremely appreciated, and thanks for the heads up on Gummy. I typically look at a ROM's OP first to look at the features then look through the last couple pages to see if and what issues it may have. It just got frustrating bc MOST posts end with people all talking about their damn RAZR's in the wrong forum lol. So thank you very much Doc.

4.3.1 unified build from 1 Feb 14 works well and has decent battery life with the battery mod, best battery life i have seen so far was on ATT's stock pre-heartbleed fix revision.

Thank you very much as well palm beach. I'm on Gummy 2.0 now (the one that works) that the doc suggested and I love it aside from some random systemui force closes so I think I will try your suggestion next lol.

I think you'll find that for the most part, the majority of the ROMs here are pretty stable, but in the end it's up to you to decide which one you'll stay on. It's a very subjective choice

There is no best Rom like what eggydrums said. Asking this question is like going into a car store and asking what's the best car. One rom doesn't fit everybody's needs. Some people look for minimalism, or features, or whatever. There is no best Rom. Every rom has its own unique features, pros, cons.
But if you're looking for opinions, obviously I'd say my rom chroma. I provide support and literally reply to every reply in the rom thread. But it contains the essentials, nothing more and nothing less. Doesn't fit everybody's needs.

"Best" ROM.
There is no such thing as a best ROM. The question itself is ambiguous. "Best" is obviously a subjective term.
What I want from a ROM may well differ from what you want from a ROM, ergo - what is best for me could be worst for you.
If you are asking what the most popular ROMs are, or which ROMs people are using, you can see which threads stay around on the first few pages (and have the most posts) in the Android Development or Original Android Development forums. You can also see what other people are running by reading the What are you running on your Nexus 5 thread.
If you are asking which is the most stable, being a Nexus device - they're all pretty stable.
If you are asking which is best on Battery, ROMs only affect battery if they have a feature that is badly coded. You will likely be able to read about this in the ROM threads. ROMs do not impact battery life. The only impact to battery life are your apps, your settings, how you use the phone and mostly, environmental issues such as Phone Signal.
For tips about improving battery life, please read [Battery Life Help] Troubleshoot battery issues here!
"Best" Kernel
There is no such thing as the "Best" kernel. What we all want from a kernel is different. Again, many people have the misconception that Kernels affect battery life. Let's get this cleared up. Although Kernel devs will build in optimisations and efficiencies that will improve battery life, these are very, VERY tiny...and if 1 kernel has these optimisations, they likely all have.
People will often say "Kernel x is better than kernel y for battery life". This is actually wrong. Kernels respond to user settings. Setting up the governor to favour either battery life or performance is simple enough to do, you just have to do some learning. The reason people think Kernel x is better than y is because developers set their kernels up with their preferred governor settings. This is what we refer to as out-of-the-box settings. The out-of-the-box settings for kernel x may well produce better battery results than the out-of-the-box settings for kernel y, which favour performance. The fact is, you as the user have the ability to tune kernel x or y to perform the same, be that battery or performance - so start learning how to do this yourselves - that way, you can choose the kernel based on the FEATURES you want, and not the fictional performance benefits of one kernel over another.

xda let best threads exist as of several months ago

So if we say a rom that is not encrypted and has the ability to recive updates so i dont have to flash everytime , and also has nice features that stock lolipop has not, wich one would you guys recomend?

Which ROM do you recommend?

I am gonna root and install a ROM tonight. I see dozens and I'm not sure what the major differences are. My old philosophy has been to pick the ROM that has the most thread views or posts.
The things that are important to me are stability and performance tweaks. I don't want much of the developer's personal customizations if possible.
Also, any tips before I get started? Thanks in advance.

just so you know, the most popular roms are usually the furthest from the best. popular does not equal best. my recommendation is either rastapop rom or terminus.

Rooted and installed my first rom in my nexus. Pure shamu. Awesome ROM, stable, quick and sufficient tweaks.

Chroma ROM.

The best advice anyone can give you is, try a bunch and decide for yourself. No body but you is going to know what is best for you. Read the ROM threads and see what users are saying. That's the best way.

rasta roms ive been running for years. its built by a very good friend, and he does lots of the actual coding himself. probably the cleanest roms around. terminus is also built by a good friend, he started learning 2 years ago, and he does it well. but he doesnt really code. but its a good rom nevertheless. terminus includes more tweaks than rastapop.

Also Chroma is based off Rastapop with some elements of terminus, not too many as I've drifted the ROM to other sources. Pretty clean as I go through everything and use test builds on a daily basis.

I ran across Purity ROM a few days ago and it's really good. You won't find it here though. Search Purity on Google plus.
Lots of really good ROMs for the nexus 6 though. That's why I love having a nexus.

SinLess ROM is smooth like butter, not very much customization as AOSP ROMS tho. If you are looking for a lot of customization, then the roms mentioned above are very nice.

I'm good now. Followed the guide and figured it all out. Just coming from the Galaxy series where there were programs that did it all for you. 1st time doing ADB installs.

Top = Most popular: Look for the thread with the most posts, or read the "What are you using" threads
Top = Best: No such thing as best. It's subjective. Look for the features you want by reading about each rom
Top = Most Stable: It's unquantifyable
Top = Alright already, just give me recommendations please: Tell us what you're looking for.

Are you coming from an iPhone or something? This is android world, even better, nexus world. Try a billion ROMs and pick your top. Each ROM out there is best by user preference

I am coming from the note series which vzw had there devices locked down. Before that I had the HTC one max and DNA which I ran viper Rom which was very customizable which I don't think n6 has.

Welcome to the nexus world. Seriously though it's user preference. My favorite right now is cyanidel. I hate layers but I'm sure a lot of good layers ROM out there

You can use any Nexus 6 ROM on any other Nexus 6 device, so that is not a concern.

Thank you. I'm glad I got this phone even though I think the camera is complete crap one a phone this good but I like the phone itself way more then note series i actually feel like I own my phone rather then being stuck on stock.

The Camera isn't special. I think it is average. I can get good shots, particularly with HDR+. It's never going to be Note 5 quality though.

I tried several roms, but my favourite are:
1) Sillness - very near to stock, very stable and fast, extra customizations, no bloatware
2) Euphoria - my personal favourite. fast, stable, highly customizable.
3) I haven't tried CM based roms, but its worth exploring
These are also the only ones that don't crash from what I've tried

I don't know about the OP but I am also new to the Nexus 6 world, getting my phone tomorrow. What is the best rom for battery life, all things being equal? I heard Chroma is good?

asking about the best battery life is like asking which chocolate cake is the best; its all about what you do, what you like, how you set it up etc, so there is no "intelligent" answer to that question.

When someone asks a very subjective question about "what is the best this or that", expect a huge range of opinions, not answers or anything conclusive.
When someone takes the trouble to provide a comprehensive response, XDA and its members do NOT expect or welcome abuse from others.
We used to delete "Best" questions - I wonder why.
