Multitasking issue - Apps getting killed in background almost immediately - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm a really big fan of the look and feel of this phone, but I have noticed an alarming issue. It reminds me of the original HTC One that only had 1GB of RAM.
If I test it side-by-side with my OnePlus One, LG G3, or Note 4, I get the same results: Clearing all apps from memory and then systematically opening the same apps on both phones, if I multitask back to any of them on the Moto X, they have to completely reload. Every Chrome page reloads, too. I have also noticed that Nova launcher redraws with regularity, even when I check the option to force it to stay in memory.
My question is: Was it this bad on 4.4.4? Or is it a Lollipop issue? Because I updated to 5.0 right out of the box and if rolling it back will fix this, I'm all for it. There's no excuse for apps reloading this frequently on a modern smartphone with 2GB of RAM.

That's a Lollipop issue. No such problems on KitKat.

Yep, no prob. That's why all my devices are still on KK.

Flashed back to Kitkat. Memory management is definitely worse on 5.0, but even 4.4.4 kills apps faster than it should. Even with 1GB available most of the time, apps have to refresh much more often than they should.
Testing Methodology:
Side-by-side with OnePlus One
Open the same 7 apps on both phones (Dialer, Feedly, Reddit Sync Pro, Chrome to androidcentral.com, camera, Nine email client, messaging)
Cycle back and forth between apps using multitasking button on both phones
Observe app reload instances
Results: The OPO NEVER reloads anything. My Moto X will be fine for the first 3 or 4 apps, then it will reload the app completely, including androidcentral.com on Chrome. And if I have multiple tabs open in Chrome, it's worse. Yes, the OPO has 3GB of RAM, but there is still 1GB free on the Moto X when I perform this test, so there's no reason it should be actively killing the apps that quickly.
That being said, it is markedly better than on 5.0. Nova launcher NEVER redraws now, whereas it did constantly before. And I was never even able to cycle between two apps without one of them reloading. Still, I wish it handled memory a little better. This is eerily similar to the issue that plagued the original HTC One and it drove me to sell that phone.
I'm not here to bag on this phone. I'm a huge fan. I just want people to be informed.

Actually WOW. I made same comparison with N5 running 5.0.1. And Moto X is worse.. I'm surprised nobody noticed that fact earlier or in the reviews. If L on X is worse than KK I am definitely not updating. Love that phone, it's such a bummer that memory management is so aggressive.. But it's behavior on KK is little bit wired and different than L. Apps running in the background like for example last pass, are always there. And on L those were the ones to kill in the first place.

Thanks for confirming. Usually when I post something like this, people reply and tell me I'm crazy or that their phone "multitasks fine".
Assuming that it's intentional, the only reason I can think Moto would do this is for battery life reasons (so nothing is running in the background draining), since it has a smaller battery. The other possibility is that they did it for the Moto G, which has 1GB of RAM and then just used the same image for both phones for the sake of consistency.
Either way, it's disappointing, especially after using the OPO and seeing the difference side-by-side. Really love this phone, but this bothers me more than it should.

I've noticed L is worse on the X versus my N5 as well. Navigating with maps and playing google music in the car is a nightmare.

Is this supposed to be fixed in 5.1?
I'm surprised not to see more posts about this issue. I've been noticing on my own phone that whenever I launch chrome or Google maps it tends to kill anything else that's running in the background (pocket casts, swipe pad, smart lock, stock launcher, etc.) it basically makes for a pretty unpleasant experience. Does anyone know if this is supposed to be fixed in 5.1?

I can confirm this issue too. Just to add more monitoring tool when you want to check the memory when such thing happens: developer options>>process stats>>duration 1 day>>click on the green bar and note the timing for which the memory was critical. I think the system deems the memory to be critical when it passes 1gb and starts to kill apps in the background. It never used to be like this on 4.4.4.
Please help contribute if you have any knowledge about using these stats.
Edit: i also noticed that during the time the memory was critical, the battery level dropped like a stone from 65%-55%. So i think its all also connected to the battery consumption being too much at times.

No crashes nor battery drain but many launcher restarts.
I've now uninstalled an app ( "Lazy Swipe" which was on the "top" list) and seen a little improvement (no more launcher restart for the last 3 hours)
I plan to investigate a bit further, I may have another potential culprit (HeadsUp which I'm only using in car dock mode but appear to consume a lot of RAM and is running all of the time)
**EDIT**
BTW, I'm not running very memory intensive app like games.

Yeah unfortunately even when there is so much ram and you cant use many apps. I you wish you can report this to motorola on their forum. I have created a thread there: https://forums.motorola.com/posts/115c66d6c7

After having uninstalled HeadsUp I've noticed a significant boot in responsiveness.
I'm going to keep an eye on memory stats for the next few hours

I would suggest observing these for a full day without restarting. Then report to motorola. For me it was google plus updates causing the issue with memory. When i uninstalled updates it stopped. So also check the timing for which the apps are running in Application settings>>running. If the time for which the app is running is lesser than the total uptime, it might be your suspect.

[Q] extreme RAM issues - has anyone experienced this?

My gf's Moto X (1st gen, stock, unrooted, Verizon, 4.4.4) has been freaking out lately and she brought it to me to investigate. The thing will sporadically tie up all of its RAM and basically become unusable. Phone gets hot and battery drains fast.
I understand how Android handles memory, so this isnt me being paranoid about available RAM...im talking about less than 20mb of available RAM and I cant even open the app drawer because it crashes. I clear all recent apps, force close anything i can, and no RAM opens up at all. Only solution is reboot and then its only good for a few hours until it gets jammed up again.
Sounds like a software issue to me, so a factory reset should fix it, but i just dont want to deal with backing up my gf's crap and heaven forbid i miss something and lose it forever. Anyone have any ideas?
PS - gsam battery monitor shows nothing noteworthy...doesnt report weird app usage, and no wakelocks or anything like that seems out of the ordinary.

Something like Watchdog Task Manager or a memory monitor app might help you figure out what's misbehaving. Logcat might give some clues.
Personally, I think I would just prefer to backup what is necessary and reset the device. You might spend a lot of time trying to attack this from any other direction. Good luck.

[Q] Memory Leak

Is there currently any ROM and/or Custom kernel, that doesn't suffer from the memory leak bug?
I am aware that similar questions come up on every other thread.
I also would love to try for myself. Stock KitKat and stock lollipop both suffer from the bug. On lollipop I have much more free ram, but chrome and other apps still redraw when multitasking.
Problem is, I don't want to unlock my bootloader yet, as I'm still considering giving back the phone.
Thanks in advance for any insightful advice.

You seriously want an answer to that?
Just read "every other thread", then come to a conclusion and act accordingly. Or don't, since you don't want to unlock. Your choice.

And yes, I seriously want an answer to that.
I never said, that I didn't want to unlock my bootloader, eventually I do want to unlock it. But according to your reply, I suppose you don't understand that. Nevermind.
Thanks, anyway.
Titan Prime will yield you the best results with memory, from my experience.
Besides that, all you can do is sit and wait for 5.1. And hope that it will fix the problem.
I've got a (german) XT1068, and I was on build RETDEALL 21.85-14 for the longest time (KK 4.4.4). The phone was sometimes close to unusable due to the memory issues: Almost every time I went back to my launcher (Nova) the widgets would reload (all two of them), every 5th time the whole launcher would have to be restarted. When listening to music, the player would often be killed when it's not the foreground app. This all was already with tuned settings and the like. Simply put, my Galaxy S2 was a much better phone, with better performance and multitasking (same amount of ram, but dual core only)...
I've updated to the 5.0.2 build that was (finally) released a few days ago (22.46-28). It's a world of difference. I would say the problems are either gone or at least they got the biggest of issues under control. So far I haven't had it running without a reboot for multiple days (installing xposed and associated modules tends to require reboots), but so far everything is looking perfectly fine. Widgets haven't reloaded even once, let alone the launcher. Multitasking works, even larger apps weren't killed (like reddit news, which tends to use quite a bit of ram after scrolling for a bit).
So I don't know whether it's fixed, but at the very least this is a fully-stock-option that works perfectly fine (for me), even though I'm rooted and use XPosed that is by no means necessary.
I also have the German OTA update. Everything works fine. As for the memory leak for me that is a thing of the past, was really bad in 4.4.4 and I had the same version as the above poster. Everything stopped in the background, in point of fact there was no multitasking. With 5.0.2 I can play music run a navigation app, surf the net no problem and still see over 400Mbyte free ram in setting all without the dreaded app has stopped working or seeing apps restarting.

4.4.4 didn't have a memory leak, just high minfree values I think.
Lollipop does have a memory leak (and thats mostly googles fault) and the memory management is very buggy when compared to kitkat. The memory leak doesn't show instantly, it shows after some time and you can just reboot the phone to "solve the problem".
If you want a really good rom for multitasking I recommend CM 11 or some rom based on it.
4.4.4 definitely has some serious issues on the MotoG, it was not just the min free values. I had tuned those (basically tried everything), but it made no real difference. So far, LP feels like it's a different phone.
I agree. I can't understand how people would go back to KitKat after trying lollipop. Chrome and other apps still redraw when multitasking though. :\
Let's see if 5.1 fixes that.
BTW: does anyone get graphic glitches in Tapatalk and chrome? Sometimes whole areas of the screen turn glitchy, until I switch to another app or press the back key. (Glitchy= pixels in all colours, like an overheated GPU on a PC would produce.)

UI lag and stutter

I recently upgraded to an S6 Edge from an HTC One M8. This phone is probably one of the best phones I've ever used. However I have noticed that sometimes the phone just "lags". For example pulling up the recents menu can take a couple extra seconds. When scrolling homescreens/settings app, it is not as smooth as I thought it should be. Chrome scrolling is pretty horrible sometimes. I've only had the phone for 7 days. I did disable most of the Samsung/Verizon/Microsoft apps. I also did clear cache from the recovery. The only remedy is to just reboot my phone which helps for about a day. Does anyone else have this issue as well?

I am also facing same issues and even sometime it feels most of the games also lags on s6 edge
Yes, my phone has serious lag. It is basic stuff, like hitting the home button it will take 2 seconds for the app icons to slowly repopulate. The calendar widget is rough, often takes 1-3 seconds for the widget to appear. I have disabled the majority of verizon apps and cleared out cache; I just did a factory reset and will try and load back in some apps but so far this phone has horrible lag. I installed the exact same apps and same set up as my Moto X 2013 and I am thinking about switching back to the old phone until some software updates come out.
i have heard about this on the smaller 32GB and there have been people that had 32 and replaced it with 64GB version that swear there is a difference in performance but i have the 64 and dont have any lag complaints.
what do you all have?

I have the 64GB version. I cracked my screen and sent it back to Samsung to repair. I am hoping they find some other problems with the phone. I have reverted back to my Moto X 2013 and it is amazing how much more fluid the UI works. The apps do not quite operate as fast (i.e . browsing, Instagram pictures, etc.) but there is 0 lag in the UI. Unless the Edge comes back running smooth I am going to sell it, the UI lag is way more frustrating than apps and browsing working slightly slower.
I received my phone back form Samsung after the cracked screen repair (cost ~$240.00). Via trial and error I am pretty confident my Calendar widget that is linked to an Exchange Account was causing my serious UI lag issues. I installed all my applications but this time used a stock wallpaper, installed Calendar Widget (started to get some lag so then removed) and did not install the photo frame widget. Now I have no UI Lag. I am pretty sure it was an issue with the calendar widget, but I am just going to stick with the stock wallpaper and no photo frame either as the UI Lag seems to have disappeared with this new setup.
When you are starting to experience lag, check how much free memory you have. When I start seeing lag, my memory is down to about 5-8%. I think this is the memory issue that is discussed in other posts. I also have a 64G device
I had spotty lag on stock ROM, but everything has been blazing on either of the custom ROMs currently available if you're up for rooting to test it out.

Any custom roms out there that fixes memory leak on Note 4

Can anyone link me to a custom rom that gets rid of the memory leak present in Note 4 on 5.0.1. It's crazy that Samsung would even release 5.0.1 they should have skipped straight to 5.1. My ram usage will not go below 2.1GB. I have tried Clean Master, Battery Doctor, Rebooting and Force Kill.
It has to be a custom rom with Touchwiz not Cyanogenmod because I love the Note 4 features
there isnt any memory leak on any samsung lollipop only s6 has it.
I've never seen my Note 4 even get to 2GB in use, ever. What are you running to get it so high?

My only question is: Have you seen any drawbacks in usage or it is just the effect that you are looking at the available ram and you see it over 2GB and assume it is wrong? Because let me say this: Note 4 and 5.0.1 does not have memory leak. Did you experience apps crashing on a regular basis? The "memory leak" basically stops RAM from clearing out automatically and disallowing other underlying processes to make use of the space. This in turn results in the apps getting killed or crashing automatically. I assume not...apps crashing constantly is the first sign of a memory leak. The only memory leaks reported were on Nexus devices and Google patched them. So basically...free ram is wasted ram on an Android platform. And if this high usage that you see (over 2gb) does not cause apps crashing and phone slower you have nothing to worry about it's just your OS working as it should Cheers!

Where are you seeing that figure? If it's in the touchwiz memory manager than that's a misleading figure since it count cached applications in it's figure which isn't really used memory. You need to check the real Android memory stats to see the real usage.
Im using task manger. this is with all apps killed.
K, thank you for the quick replies. It says a lot in Clean Master 85% of available memory is being used and wanting me to keep having to boost the phone. Have you guys notice any poor battery life with Bluetooth on running lollipop? Can't seem to get half a day usage even with the screen off. It also says in Task Manager 2GB+ is being used. I keep clearing it, but it does not go down. Could it be because gear manager won't close, as it will disconnect my Gear S
No problem here
I hope

You have only one problem to resolve. Deinstall Clean Master, don't believe in phone "boost" and some unpossible clean effect.
If you haven't problems with applications crash or freeze your "problem" doesn't exist.
Bluetooth has significant influence on battery life. Not services, but bluetooth radio itself.

Stop killing apps with ram booster. It will make your phone slower in reopening apps and consume more battery. Search for some articles on Google to find out why the ram cleaners or launchers with ram cleanear included are so bad for your phone. Android has a very good ram management and you don't need other programs. If you want to see less consumption on your ram disable or uninstall the apps you don't use. Try to open and close a simple task like phone book and after try the same thing after you killed the process with a ram cleaner. You will see that it takes a long time to re-open, and also your procesor will work harder to open the app.

I'm still going over some logcats but I'm positive the way 5.0 handles RAM is a problem. Haven't been able to pinpoint the issue yet but 5.0 is definitely allocating memory differently than 4.4 and not necessarily in the best way.
Why am I doing any of this? Because fun of course, but also because I noticed home screen redraws were becoming more frequent, and apps were refreshing when a device that has 3gb of RAM shouldn't experience too often. When compared to my Note 3 on 4.4, side by side, running some taxing apps, I've seen a substantial difference.
K thank you. Will uninstall Clean Master and see if my performance improves. Report back. Anyone found a way to open camera when rooted without unlocking phone with fingerprint by double tapping home button. Sorry about posting it in this fourms, just wondering. Hope the Zerolemon battery case improves my battery life, getting it soon. Heard it's not very accurate being that it has 3 batteries and the phone doesn't always get the right reading
I have the same thing here even i noticed apps need to refresh when multitasking frequently

i think there are a few leaks in 5.0.1, so far we have 1 leak fixed in the kernel and 1 in the rom (thanks to robocik) but ram usage remains high.
not that that is a bad thing...apps only open faster, so that's good, but especially the touchwiz redraws are insane after a while.
every time you press the home button or the greenify button, it redraws the launcher completely.
so even after 2 fixes it's still present

odd, if i don't use greenify and just stock touchwiz i have an average of 2.3Gb of ram in use
and it redraws the launcher on every press on the home button
thankfully the n4 doesn't have it as bad as the s6, but it could be a lot better
Never had a launcher redraw using Nova and Servicely to kill apps on screen off. I'm running at around 2.2GB of ram usage always.

Seems like the majority of users in this fourms use Nova Launcher. Does it decrease the ram usage. At the moment I am running Flow Home, I think it redraws everytime the home button is pressed.

Z3C 5.02 stock Memory leak or something else?

I know that there was a memory leak issue with 5.02 but it's apparently fixed before the fw was deployed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/clarification-xperia-lollipop-fix-t3087240
So that doesn't help explain my issue. Very often, when I have any combination of Spotify + Google Maps, Spotify + Chrome, Chrome + Google Maps, etc open, the app that's in the background will just flat out close. It's stupidly annoying while driving when my music just dies, or when my navigation disappears and I miss my turns because I don't hear any audible alerts. The issue goes away after a fresh restart, and will come back usually within a day or two.
I did not have this issue on 4.4.4.
My free ram hovers around 500-600MB at all times.
RAM status today
RAM Status after fresh restart
I absolutely hate why nothing can be properly backgrounded like in iOS. The moment I press the home button or switch apps, all my open tabs in Chrome have to be reloaded. Filling out forms in a Chrome tab while referencing another app is almost impossible... This was actually an issue on 4.4.4 as well as 5.02. I have not found any way to fix this, no matter how many times I restart my phone. I don't think my old Galaxy S3 had this problem...
Why does Android make us work so hard for a properly working phone, if we can even have that at all? As a consumer I should not have to go through 7 levels of technical hell to make a phone work properly. This isn't Linux.
Sorry for the rant. Anyone know what I can do to fix this? Everyone says RAM clearing apps are bad. So that's not an option right?
.726 has this problem and as far as I can recall it was pretty serious. Fortunately in .26 the problem has been solved. It's about memory management in lollipop being poor rather than memory leak.
.26 hasn't been released for D5803 USA right? I don't see it in the firmware thread
Still doesn't explain the Chrome issue. Whenever anything is backgrounded (not closed) in Chrome, all my tabs have to be reloaded. Most of the time now, even just switching from one tab to the next within Chrome while it's open forces a refresh of the tab. WTF
I never had any memory leak issues with any of the firmwares. Try to turn off Stamina mode just to see if it is affecting (I have it off, and queue background data off as well). Make sure also you have not enabled Developer Options and checked the setting 'Don't keep activities' or some other setting that limit the amount of process you can have in the background.
Dev options are not enabled. And stamina only kicks in at 50% battery. I could turn off que data but does that have anything to do with RAM?
I just called Xperia tech support and they suggested I do this:

Has anyone done this and fixed the issue?
I am apparently not the only one who has had this problem:

There's an Xposed module called App Settings that lets you force the OS to keep stuff resident in memory. Because it's an Xposed module, I have no idea if it's compatible with LP or not. Also, there's a point where you can run out of memory and experience involuntary restarts if you keep too many apps resident. Still, it's worth trying, imo.
I was told that the memory leak wouldn't be fixed until 5.1 or even 5.1.1
726 did indeed have this problem. i used the xposed module for the memoryleak fix and it did indeed work...phone was much faster.
People are saying sony phones do not have the leak but the leak affects each phone in slightly different ways.
I the new .28 USA firmware running on my phone now and it is working rather well. granted i still have the lollipop memory fix module activated but i will do some testing with it off as well.
Nope, the problem is not solved in any lollipop firmware, atleast for me. I tried all the latest, reflash and wiped all (Included Internal Data) and the problem still here. Is Ridiculous how with 2GB RAM I can´t have atleast 4 apps opened without the preocupation of they get killed for itself. I remember with my Nexus 7 Tablet in Android 4.3 had a looot of apps opened and no one get killed itself, it was a great multitask experience that I can't get yet in Xperia Z3 Compact. I tried edit minfree values, uninstall apps, change firmwares, edit services.jar, install tweaks, edit my build.prop, etc. Also I noticed with the Task Manager of System Tuner app that "/system/bin/mediaserver" is always eating more than 60mb of Ram, this is since kitkat and continues to happen in Lollipop, after of some hours, this same process can take up to 160 - 200 mb of RAM!!! The worst thing is that in other devices this process don't seems to take a lot of Ram as in Z3 Compact did. Idk, it would be good that we can improve multitask in this device.
I compared the /system/bin/mediaserver usage with a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and it only takes 5 mb of RAM while in Xperia Z3 Compact it always start eating 50 mb of RAM and it increases up to 160 - 200 mb in some hours. You can see my proofs here:

So Idk what to do now, I hear that the only good devices that take importance in multitasking are HTC M9 (M8 and M7 too) and the Asus Zenphone because they merged their own patches to ART to improve a lot how multitasking is managed in android. I think sony do their devices to kill apps very agressive, so in this way they can presume that his device is more smooth than others but useless for multitasking. Weird...

Hmmm, idk. My GPE m8 on 5.1 is experiencing these same symptoms. Super annoying to have my music cut out in the middle of a workout. ?
I play with my food
I referring to HTC M7, M8 and M9 with Sense, because they get own HTC patches. Well, is what I hear, and also I see some tests in YouTube and the multitask is very good.

Any feedback on how .28 is running compared to .726 with the xposed fix?
Like many, I uninstalled the fix after I read the thread pointing out that having it active was pointless as Sony had already fixed the memory leak themselves, but after reading your reply, I decided to reinstall and sure enough, my phone does seem snappier. Having read the changelog for .28, it didn't seem worth upgrading unless performance was noticeably better.
I will tell you im enjoying .28 with the fix running. There are enough fixes in there to make it worth it i think

No issues on 23.1.A.0.726 here, I have averagely 250 MB more free RAM on Lollipop than on Kitkat, with all the same apps installed. :good:
Guys, the problem is not how many ram do you have, the problem is if you can multitask some apps without someone get killed. I can multitask within 2 or 3 apps sometimes, but I can't get more than that without someone gets killed...
It was to be expected that Lollipop in Sony devices would be problematic. For the time being, I prefer to stay in KitKat and then make the jump to 5.0.2.

And nobody said otherwise. I said that I prefer staying in KitKat until the Lollipop update is better to making worth the jump
