Looking for a full features (think iPod with a good widget) music player app that displays album are beautifully with the Widget on the desktop and is also quite useful... opinions ?
So there are no good music apps for Android?
Go with Cubed (^3) and you will never look back. Granted the 5.1 surround sound in the stock player was nice but I don't miss it.

Awesome music player, thanks
MixZing is really good and full features. Only con is it's expensive at $6.99
I use the Music player from the Cyanogen ROMs. I found it over on their forum somewhere.

Can't seem to find it over there, could you help me out mate?
I like the Samsung player. My only complaint with it is that it's a bit tedious to set up playlists on, and no widget surpoort. There are a number of really great widgets for the stock Android player, for which I believe I saw a thread that will help you install it, but I haven't gone through the effort to install it so I can't comment much on it.
Cubed is kind of a neat player, great for showing off, but the eye candy makes browsing fairly inefficient (imho), and having the controls at the top of the screen is a pain.

Cubed is good unless you plan on using the lock screen option, then it's garbage.
I was unimpressed with ^3/Cubed. Nice eye candy, but hardly functional.
I have Mixzing installed and it seems useful, but it's my secondary music player right now.
TuneWiki was cool for the lyrics display feature, but the interface is ugly as all hell.
DoubleTwist is the nicest looking and most polished of the bunch, but also no support for m3u playlists not synced via the DoubleTwist client (which was unacceptably slow for me). Maybe I'm just using it wrong.
The default Samsung player would have been great if it would just recognize my m3u playlists. WTF, Samsung.
As is, I actually installed the stock Android player. It's minimal and functional. I've heard MusicMod is a nice addition to it, but it looks like the latest version is only supported on Froyo.
I ended up going back to the default Samsung Player. The lock screen widget works the best of all the apps I tried and it has no issue seeing my playlists I sync over using iSyncr. Its biggest weakness is the lack of controls via the headset button. Play/Pause works but no forward or back.
A friend used bTunes which looks the nicest out there IMO. A close second was Doubletwist but the lack of a lockscreen widget was a deal breaker. Thing I hate the most from all 3rd party apps I tried (aside from dT) was that they all indexed multiple copies of my playlists. It was a pain trying to guess which of the 4-6 copies of my playlists I saw would actually have the music inside them and I got tired of always deleting the blank ones everytime I sync'd.
If Samsung can add some additional headset controls and a smart playlist feature I will be very happy.
I have to say though that the stock Samsung Player is quite handy and non-laggy.
I especially like the 5.1 option, which is god-like.
Other than that, it doesn't have many features but it is convenient.
Nobody has mentioned Meridian; I like it quite a lot.

I'm with you. The 5.1 in my car sounds amazing. I wish I had two options though:
1. I want to "lock" to landscape, without auto-rotate to the CD GUI.
2. It only rotates one way! Turn the phone on it's right side, and the CD GUI is upside down.
If these two issues had workarounds, it would be perfect.
I like DoubleTwist....
I've been using btunes with Widget locker to get lock screen controls. Works nicely!
I use museek. I loved the samsung player but the only issue with it was the sever lack of a random play mode.
Museek REQUIRES ID3 tags.
Museek supports album covers, Last.FM scrobbling, Sleep(auto stop), Lock Orientation,Gapless playback, and its free.
Play modes are: Repeat all, Shuffle (with the option to shuffle whole collection or just with in the playlist), Smart shuffle, Play similar songs (with the option to avoid repeating an artist until a specified threshold of songs have played).

Stock Samsung player has shuffle. Tap the screen and it's the two intertwining arrows just above the progress bar on the left.
So what players have a lock screen function? I hate the dang lock screen on this thing. Maybe I can turn it off, never thought about that.. heh.
The ONLY thing that I don't like about the stock music player is the fact that songs without album art show some gay-looking colored circles... Why not just a simple neutral graphic? Why not give an option to change the default picture?
Not sure exactly how hard what I want would be, but, I'd like to know if an app dev could repoint the Navigation and Maps buttons in the new DL30 car dock to the Google counterparts. I need the DL30 function to enable audio on my Samsung dock, but I refuse to use Bing/VZ Navigator. I imagine this would be much easier than fixing the desk dock to incorporate the audio button I need, but if someone has one or did it, I'd welcome both.

the google car dock works great. it points to the defualt apps. you need the stock music player to play music through the aux. i have the stock app for the music player and i use winamp as a widget on my home screen. the google car dock is more customizable than the stock car app.
I just tested, and indeed, this will work. However, if I ever need to navigate, I've got to open the music app, activate the dock, then go back to Maps. What would be REALLY FREAKING AWESOME is if I could swap out something on that app I'll never use, like Search, for a link to the music app. THEN it would truly be a 1 stop shop. Alas, I regret not learning a programming language in times like these. Google was supposed to release a 'build-it-yourself' software, but haven't heard anything on it since it's conception

you must still be using the stock car app. find a gapps, jt has one in his van froyo thread. install the card doc and cardock launcher. you have to delete the stock car dock before you install the google.
I tried the google car dock, but it doesn't have the audio switching link. My point is, I want a Google Car Dock that has that option. Or, if possible, a Google Car Dock that has the audio out button AND replaces Search with Music. Know of a way I can crash-learn to edit apk's?

you have to have the tw music player installed as well. you cant use the aosp music player.
google car dock
tw music player
I think you're missing my point....I know it will work if I keep either the TW music -or- the TW car dock. But that requires additional app switching. I'm looking for a one stop shop. Car dock, points to Google apps, has the audio icon, bonus if it replaces search button with Music link.

Yes an editable car cradle app that has the audio switch button. (and one does does not redirect output to the phone speaker if you exit the app)
Heck I wouldn't mind just having a widget that could turn on and off the audio to usb and not use the car app. I have a folder that has everything in that apps screen and more. If I could just turn on audio Id use that as my Car Home app. Someone give me a widget to switch audio to the USB and nothing more..Pleeassse
Might be time to actually try App Inventor
If you can get that to work, I will tip my hat to you x100. I first tried APK Manager, found in another xda forum. Opened both the stock and the google car docks, and tried copying the differing items in the main layout and the app calls, as best I could figure being a non-programmer. Of course, it was a flop. So, I extracted the icon images from the zipped apk, and tried App Inventor. I got the background loaded, the icons all appeared in a line down the left hand side, and I could only find functions to open the music player and contacts (I think). I can't help but think, the job would be a snap for someone out there with proper skills to replace Bing Maps with Google Maps, VZ Navigator with Google Navigation, and Search with Music Player. Til that day comes, I'll work with what we've got, then buy a Thunderbolt in a couple of weeks and give ole Sammy the bird, permanently
You could try this.
Rename your existing carcradle apk to carcradle.apk.old and drop this one in the system/app folder. It will point to google maps and nav ( first click you must select google nav but after it works every time.) cant help on audio as i dont use a car cradle.

its not the car dock app thats the problem. you have to use the stock music app. play a song there, press the little phone icon to make the audio come out the 3.5 then pause the music and then go play pandora or whatever.
Okay so I just found some cool new apps that work on Vegan GTAB5.1.1...
task manager
improved performing gallery3d
launcher2 with wallpapers fitting entire screen...not zoomed
app center ( for market )
screen shots below....
3D Home is another home launcher app but in 3d...
video player app is also different and now all videos fill the screen. HD video plays smooth now and is in sync. This only launches from the 3d home app
programs app is in 3d and only launches from the 3d home
Never got the 3d launcher you show in the picture. Launcher apk didn't have any kind of options to edit either. Looked cool in the pics, sticking with launcher pro for now.
Do we need to move the .apk's to system/app then change permissions for this to work?
Can't wait to try these out when I get off work.

I believe it was launcher2.apk for 3Dhome. It states that it is 3d home when you install it. Simply place these apk's on your sdcard and install with file explorer of your choice. The 3d home doesn't allow additional widgets just launches the better apps. The other home launcher allows for full widget support and full screen wallpaper. No forced zooming on your wallpaper after you select it.
This is a neet launcher. Thanks. You were right, I loaded the ilauncher.apk. I just converted my sealab 2021 DVD to flv so I could take some laughs on the road this week. So fare the video looks great and no weird sync issues. Very cool. Just wish now I could use the movie player outside this launcher, its snazzy but I always(after a few weeks) end up back with LP.
Thanks again
Can't get it working

You have to install all of the apks that are associated with the 3dhome.
programs.apk, shuttlevideoplayer.apk, gallery3d.apk. The only widgets that work on the 3dhome are the two that came with it. Weather and news.
What to search for in market?

on 3d launcher cant get widgets on home screen
anyone figure it out??
I have tried the 3D launcher in the past, but due to complications, and not linking and customization available, it wasn't for me.......too bad though it was different!
Does anyone know if a wallpaper is available that allows you to apportion areas of the screen to launch an app, ie an office background, touching the clock opens the clock app, the desk opens your office app, etc? I assume it's possible with live wallpapers that interact with touch?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I don't think you can do this with a wallpaper/live wallpaper, but you can do it by using Desktop Visualizer. (In the Market)
Once you've download the app, you can use the DVRSizeConfigTool (in the Market) and the Image-Crop tool to create a cool looking portioned out screen with different widgets. It's kind of hard to explain, but once you watch the video, you'll see what I'm talking about. The process is pretty confusing, but I was able to do it using a tutorial on YouTube. I hope this is what you were thinking of..
Edit: I don't have enough posts to be able to post links, but if you PM me, I will send you the link to the YouTube video tutorial. You can also search "How To Use DVR Image Crop - Desktop VisualizeR" in YouTube and the video is by 'biipub'.
Look at "Launcher Wall" in the market.
I haven't actually used it, but it can launch apps apparently.
Thanks guys, I think either one of these will suit, just gonna have to pick which one....

+ the apps are free
+ widgets, icons and the user interface is beautiful
- many Sony and Google apps have become big and heavy pigs in terms of app size as wll as memory foot-print
- user interface, settings and options have been stripped down or hidden, sometimes to a level that cripples the app
- permissions required are numerous, sometimes without any connection to the function of the app
I personally found that functionally there are sometimes better alternatives. I personally like the VLC player much better than Movies and Walkman, even though it still has some rough edges.
What clever replacements are you using for Messenger, Album, Calendar, Phonebook, Musik Player, Movies, Barcode Scanner, File Browser, Internet Browser, Contacts, Email, Maps, Notes and the likes?
Album - Quickpic
Video - MX Player, because can be used together with Bravia (HW+)
Music - PowerAmp Trial Version, it's free but trial XD But you can still used =)
File Browser - ES File Manager and X-Plore
Browser - Baidu Browser and Opera Mini
Notes - Sony Note stock and Colornote
Personally, I don't care about beautiful UI, what I need is easy and simple navigation =)

I tried Jet Audio. It would be a typical example of what I mean. Walkman has 11 Mb and not even half of the functionality. I am looking more for "lean" alternatives. But for someone who loves listening to music Jet Audio is a great alternative, same as PowerAmp.
Personally I don't like Chrome. I am using Dolphin. It is the best I found for me, but not completely happy.

On the long run what works best has a straight design. Bauhaus. I think an app can be beautiful and not be worthless eye candy at the same time. I tried some Notes apps and found you are right, Sony Notes is among the best, and it IS simple and beautiful.
QuickPic is a golden tip. 0.5 Mb vs. 13 Mb of the Sony Album. For what? Memory foot print in operation is similar, only that QuickPic unloads from my memory immediately. And it has only the permissions which are needed for it's function. More over, the Sony Albums thumbs are to tiny for my taste. To me, QuickPic is really a worthwhile alternative.

Yeah I used to love PowerAmp. But switched to JetAudio because it made me remember the old days (on pc) and completely forgot about it now. JetAudio offers a few additional features to PowerAmp anyway. Walkman is all about looks and animations. If you want slim players you check stuff like Shuttle.
I used chrome because it syncs across my phone, windows laptop and ubuntu laptop as well and has all my bookmarks and history.

You can just resize thumbnails with two fingers.
but when you try to name alternatives, for example jetaudio, then its only the half truth. the full functional jetaudio costs 2,99euro. so this is a minus....compared to walkman app. isnt it?^^
I saw the word "Bauhaus" ...maybe take a look into NexMusic. am using that. and it has a really nice feature: it not uses much battery
also when you speak about quickpic, you have to speak about the functions of the sony album. without sony album you will not be able to change lockscreen background wallpaper.
so you have to keep it on phone, if you need it for that. and if you keep it on phone, then you dont need quickpick, or you like to use two galleries?
for the notes, i use google keep. yeah i know privacy and all that stuff. but i use it only for useless "lists". not for private stuff.
its functional, you not have to use the sync. it looks good...and its fast.

1Weather was my previous favourite. It is one of those apps that are created to harvest user data. I mean I agree it's great no-cash app and for those who don't mind, that's the price for it. I used it in a sort of modified state (Permissions, I found 3 data collectors there). Lately they implemented a lot of bloat into it. I tossed it and now I am having EZWeather. That's a sparse weather app. Arcus is also fine for a richer weather app, but still has some rough edges (in oarticular the widgets). The near future weather data is good.

Sony Home is awesome, especially 6.1. I tried a number other launchers but returned. The Sony Home is really good, considering the small app size it offers a lot, foremost a high level of easy functionality. For me the only other one that seems to be a keeper is Sicksky.
I like the phonebook, the keyboard, and conversations, too. Most of the Sony apps are actually pretty good. So are Google apps. They are good, but some of them have become hefty items. That applies even more for the Google apps. And also, I like manual not automatic. I know there are others, too.

I am using VLC Player which is simple and works pretty well. But it's big. MX is very nice and works really well. However, as well too big for my taste. I am still looking for a kind of QuickPic equivalent but for video. UPDATED COMMENT: I see now why VLC is big. It opens everything available on Earth, Venus and Mars. The only thing it failed to open was a can of worms.
Shall strip down the entire ROM and and just leave it with core functions, then load apps that only use permissions needed for their function and are lean and muscular.
Alternative Apps: Small - Simple Interface - Least Permission
Album: QuickPic
Barcode Scanner: Barcode Scanner (by Zxing), or QR & Barcode reader (Secure)
Calculator: Calculator (CyanogenMod)
Calendar: Google Calendar
Browser: Tint for small + pretty + privacy, Boat for a medium sized better featured browser
Display Adjustment: Yet Another Auto Brightness
File Manger: inKa File Manager
Keyboard: OEM 6.1
Launcher: SickSky for Small, clever and elegant, otherwise hand s down Xperia Home 6.1
Messaging OEM (Conversations.apk)
Mobil Data Counter: Data Counter Pro
Music Player: NexMusic
Navigation: Mapfactor GPS
Notes: OEM 9.1
Screen Lock: EZ Screen Off
Text to Speech: Google Text to Speech
Video + Music Player: VLC
Weather: EZWeather or Notification weather for minum weather app, Arcus (but not finished)
Widgets: Wizz Widget
Wifi: Wifi Manger
More suggestions welcome!

We were talking abt photo album previously. I hope I don't sound too patronizing but to everyone who hasn't done so, I would suggest to try QuicPic. I dare to say it is better than the Sony Album at much much smaller size and with no obscure permissions.
The Tint browser is another top recommendation. Now that I got the hang on it, it just works beautiful.
Who knows a good calendar? Not 16 Mb, just a simple calendar which syncs with Goggle calendar and shows an agenda, too.
Or, alternatively a semccalendar.apk (together with the calendarprovider)?
