Witch TouchWiz rom??? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm a new note 4 owner! And 99% chance I'm going to root it. And I wanted to know which rom is a good one. I bet they are all great, it's very hard to make one. I'm looking a fast, stable, TouchWiz. I'm really into sound quality. And some extra features! Does anybody have any suggestions? Ooh!!! And I saw that there is a mod/hack for Unrestricted Tethering. Is a rom that has it baked in? Or can I flash it with any TouchWiz rom? Thanks in advance

When I am new to a phone I tend to look for the developer that has the most posts in the thread. There is the most action going on in there. I went for FireKat and it is awesome.

This is not always true, sometimes the more responses in a rom can also mean that there is alot of bugs and errors ( dont get me wrong almost all roms will have issues, some more then others. So no need to flame or start a riot) Also people like to make comments that have nothing to do with a rom either.
So my advice is to pick a rom, read thru all of the posts and then decide if it is what you want and/or need. Everyone has their own choices on what rom is the best, but only you can make that decision for you and your phone.
Pick wisely and enjoy.

Try em all out. That's the fun of flashing. See what you like and what you don't.

Video tour of roms

I hope this is in the right section. But with many roms and so many versions, there isnt a pros and cons rom sheet out there. It would be nice to know what rom is better at this and what rom gives you that. It also would be nice if people could start uploading short video tours of each rom. That way everyone can get a brief look at the appearence and menus each different rom has, to help us decide which we like.

That can be a huge undertaking for most devs, not only managing the development of the ROM's, but fielding questions and such. While it's a cool idea, it's not too practical. The ROM's at XDA can change SO quickly, it would be impossible to keep up with attempting to video it. Some of the ROM threads you'll see, don't even have screen shots.
I think the main reason is, most of the ROM's are going to be BASICALLY the same, in terms of operation. Past that; it's going to be functionality, how the dev cooks the ROM, and what he/she puts in it. In the end, it's all visual. Themes, apps, wallpapers, and so on. I could send you videos of the past 10 ROM's I've flashed, and I can tell you, you would be very hard pressed to tell me which ROM is which, just because of how I mod it to suit my needs.
My suggestion is to read the threads, find a dev that is present in the forum, find a thread that is supportive and will allow you to find the answers you need. Then try it. From my experience, each Captivate is a little bit different, and yours my respond a little differently than mine will. You just need to put some time and work into figuring out which one will work for you.
That's not to say that there aren't some ROMs that are wildly different than others. I've certainly flashed a couple ROMs that blew me away with what they had, but that is indeed rare.

Yeah, that is true.
Adam has a REALLY good thing going with Phoenix. His functionality of the GPS is hands down the best I've seen. The theming is great, but for me, he's good people, the team has alot of pride in the project and it shows in the thread.
Yes and actually the only 2 roms I've ever used that had good GPS were Phoenix and Assonance/Serendity. I can't tell you which is better, I just know that both have working GPS
the best way to know is to try them

Cezar's Continuum is the best I have seen.
You gotta try each rom out and see which one suits best for you. I'm sure you can try out roms for 30 minutes to an hour when devs have worked on for hours and hours releasing their roms. At least that's how I like to think.
It comes down to how you customize it. all the rims are great, but eventually it boils down to the kernel, modem, scripts, tweaks, and other things you add in yourself. My gps is accurate to FEET in sacramento, and locks in five seconds or less thanks to da_g and his fix. The telus modem helps a ton too. So in the end we all arrive at different roms. Doing video tours would be terrible cause not all roms are the same in the end

Ok guys we all know this is not the place for this lol. The best way to find the pros and cons of the roms are 2 things. 1. read the thread (I know who whats to have to read for what they are looking for lol j/k) 2. Try it your self and read at least the first page

[Q] New to Roms.. Which would be best for performance speed?

Let me just say.. I HATE the stock rom on the cappy. I always get force close errors and the phone always lags/freezes. I thought that when they released 2.2 it might get better. It didn't... Does anyone know of a rom that might be the best for performance speed so I don't have these issues anymore? I checked into Firefly and Cyganomod 7 and they both look really nice.
Also, is there a way you can preview a rom before you install it? I saw a thread about being able to do so on the HD2, but on that thread, they said that is the only phone you can do it on..
I'm sorry if these are kind of nooby questions, but I am a flashing newb and would like to get some help before I do harm to my phone..
Most people are going to tell you to read and I would also suggest that.... as far as roms go, phoenix, firefly, supernova are all very good. If you want something more like stock then there is cognition and fusion.
Just try to read up on the roms as each will be a little different.

Thanks Frank. I like the layout of the cappy stock, but it's just too damn slow for me..
Continuum is my choice right now. VERY stock look in the unthemed version.
Most of the roms have screen shots of their opening page(OP). As far as performance/battery life/etc, that varies with each phone and its user.
As a beginner, I (and so would most others)would recommend staying away from CM7 (and MIUI and Darky's). They are multi step flashing processes where just ONE tiny mistake can cause someone to start drinking again(after they pull their hair out).
Do research. Most of the roms have threads in the Development Section. Begin reading aboiut them from page 1. There is also a thread just for those new to rom flashing in the Development Section. READ IT.
Good Luck. If Ihave helped in any way, please don't forget about the thank you button.

If you ever need more help than reading, google Mobile TechVideos. The guy makes very clear vids on how to flash a ROM and also shows you different one (he has quite a few videos). I use Phoenix 7.3 myself and it's beautiful - Firefly and Supernova are just as nice IMO.
As others mentioned, really take time and read alot!
I personally like Paragon RC6....great fast, stable ROM!
Like said above, stay away from CM7, not for beginners, and still Beta!
READ...READ...READ the forums on the various Roms!
Thanks for the advice everyone. I found a sticky guide for flashing that I will use to help me. I also decided on going with FireFly 2.7. I just wish there was really a way to preview the rom on the cappy like you can on the HD2.
But again, thanks everyone for your help!

there is no competition with cm7 when it comes to speed.
its the fastest you'll ever get on your cappy.. you must try it.
if speed is the most important thing you look for, cm7 is the best fit

Yeah, as long as you don't mind a camera that almost works and not being able to mount your SD card, CM7 is it. Oh, and don't forget the crappy battery life. The guy is a newbie. Why would you recommend CM7 to a newbie.
Thread closed, since best rom depends in what suites for you.

[Q] What to put on my new Captivate

Hi Everyone. I just got my second Captivate today and am finally wanting to utilize it and Android to there full potentials. I had nothing customized on my first one so I am new to the developmental side of things. I am not uncomfortable with it though, so anything goes for me. What are the best recommendations? If you need anymore info let me know and I will do my best to provide it. Many thanks to everyone in advance!
Currently running stock everything.
Firmware Version
2.2
Baseband Version
I897UCKB2
Kernel Version
2.6.32.9
Build Number
FROYO.UCKB2
Just a quick rundown of what I personally did with my captivate. I got the AIO Captivate toolbox, Cognition 4.5.3 and the eXistZ kernal. Threw that all together and got it up and running very easily, and very smoothly. This phone is a beast now... I LOVE it! This thing runs like butter.
I'd go with gingerbread, but I'll stay away till an official release from Samsung and AT&T. Personal choice of mine...
Try out different roms and find one that fits you best. Be careful read the instructions and make sure you understand, before you try anything. And don't let other force roms on you
Good luck
Thanks for the suggestions Jason. I will keep them in mind and see if I like any of it.
And Thanks for the advice Speedy. I will be sure to read and read and read some more before I do anything to my phone.
I love the AIO tool box. I found it convenient and easy. Maybe you should start here.
FOR NEW CAPTIVATE USERS - READ HERE FIRST - FAQs | HELPFUL LINKS
It's a great thread to get you some good starting info along with a lot of great links to more detailed threads on specific topics. Give it a read. Between that thread and the links from that thread you will probably be able to answer most if not all of your questions. It's got great info, even for those of us that have been doing some of this for a while. Then after you've read all that flash some of those great ROMs out there and find one you really like.

Like when people say this rom or that rom is the best. Its all personal choice. I probably should have worded it differently
I never understand why it is not allowed to discuss the "best" rom. Obviously "best" is somewhat of a subjective opinion. But aren't some roms actually more stable than others? Is the rule about discussing the best rom in place so developers feelings don't get hurt? So no one can say rom x is a buggy piece of crap? Even if the rom was crap?
And people say it depends on your phone. That makes zero sense. All the phones are identical i897s.
A for sale sign?
A good thing on the captivate is odin one click back to stock just in case you mess up

Cover your basses. Start with big roms such as CM7 and MIUI. They are fast and stable and can often be tweaked to function exactly as you wish. Start to narrow your way down to more homebrew roms if you remain unsatisfied.

Any Recommended Roms?

Ok so I've been on serendipity 7 for a while now, and since I did that i've dropped pretty much from keeping up to date on any thing rom related.. My phone starts acting funny sometimes so I think its time for an update..
So I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to which rom to use. My preferences are that its very fast and responsive on the cappy, very stable and nearly bug free.. GPS that works with <30s lock time..
I've thought of trying CM7 or even CM9 for that matter since I think ICS looks pretty good.
Tho I'd like to hear people's suggestions that have done nothing but flash different roms on a daily basis to try out..
Thank you for any suggestions made..
To suggest again, read the threads try a few and see what fits you best.
This thread will self destruct in 3.....2.......1
See I would try other roms, to see which I like best, however I just don't have the time to sit there and flash roms over and over again, I'm a busy person that needs his phone to just work with the apps that I need.. So I can't be flashing each day to install apps each day to try to find which rom I like best out of the hundreds there are..
Which is why I asked for anyone's suggestions that have tried multiple roms already. I've already looked around and really can't decide on one, which is why, again I'm asking for a little assistance. I don't need people like you to come in here telling me to go look when thats what I've already done..
Well, based off your comments it sounds like you should leave it stock or what you already have.
Since you don't have time to hack things around, it's not best to switch when you already have something installed or could go to a stock working/rooted phone.
Ask each person here and you may get a different answer, its a preference thing.
Really a loaded question.
Best thing to do is to try them each out, but you don't have the time - so...
Try out Doc's Master ICS V12, best rom there is. I have install many different roms and i always felt there is something missing. You will like it if you give it a try.

We are all the same. Point being, spend some time to read about each rom thread and comments and decide what you want for yourself. There's no easy way out, asking here will give you mixed responses. If you dont wanna pit the time to try roms, then stay on stock. Its simple and works without problems=the real time saver.

It's nice to get people's suggestions, (especially developers and testers) when it comes to the different options.
In my unprofessional opinion, CM9 was very smooth for me, and the most stable one I've tried so far. I like the look and customization of aokp nostalgia, which is what I'm currently on. I was on Doc's Master 11, and that was nice as well. besides that I haven't tried the others yet, so I can't give you too much more. Good luck!

[Poll] Ultimate vs Alliance

I am currently on RocketRom JB v3 but since this will be the final version of RocketRom, I am looking for the next best ROM. So far I know all of the buzz is between Ultimate and AllianceRom.
So I just want a feel of what the community think and I will go with the one everyone think is best.
Go buy an iphone
I think this thread will probably either fall on deaf ears or you will get lots of comments about read both ROM's threads or try both and see what you prefer. You may also get helpful comments like the 1 above.

Ultimate, it functions best to install as alliance relies on scripting and choices made throught an app.
For cleanest install thrn only possible for Ultimate as you can format system and data and install.

ultimate is the best TW rom so far ..nothing coms close to it ..ive tried most of the TW jb roms out there but i keep coming back to ultimate,no offense to the devs but my personal choice is ultimate
Ive tried em both, And both are extremely well crafted and run perfectly.
I wouldnt say one is better / worse than the other, they are equally as great in their own way.
The only advice I (as well as many others) can give is: Try them both ! test them for several days and see which performs better FOR YOU.
So these are the two roms that are currently popular huh? Thanks for helping to reduce my reading time. I'm surprised Ultimate is a bit popular than Alliance. But this is good to know.

Thanks for your input, I actually tried Alliance first but for some reason I couldn't get it to work, constant boot loop, spent hours trying different ways to get it work but no cigar. I am currently trying out Ultimate, I am rather happy with it. I will follow your advice and try alliance rom again but probably after a few weeks of using Ultimate.
Thanks to everyone who contributed into this, by the looks of it, both Ultimate and Alliance comes really close and it is almost split in the middle of what the community thinks.
don't compare any rom on this forum, every rom has a plus and minus, you want to know what is the best one? try it yourself, and what rom seems match for you, because if you ask people here of course they have a much reason for himself why he choose "that" rom.
Thanks.

And that is what I am after, what majority of the people think is the rom "they" like best. Maybe I shouldn't of worded it as Ultimate Vs Alliance but what I want to know is statistically which rom is most popular. If people actually read the thread they should know this is what I was after at the very beginning.
Look in the development sections and see which thread have the most replies / views, they are mainly the most popular
Some have issues with Alliance, I had some myself, frequent bootloops, sticking on GT-N7000 screen and so on, but with a bit of tinkering I fixed it.
Now im using Ultimate, and it satisfies my every need, So im sticking with it Its Fast, Stable, Smooth, Rarely gets laggy and is frequently updated which is a main USP for me, I like the fact that the Dev listens to the users and is always improving on it.
But as the rest say, just try them all.. There are some wicked AOSP ROMs out there too so dont focus all your attention on TW JB Leaks, Unless thats what you prefer ?
