3RD Generation - 7" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello there fellow XDA'ers. I was wondering if you could lend me a hand and help me understand as I'm completely lost and will consider myself a newb (noob) with the kindle fire hd. I was wondering if theres any roms/recovery for the 3rd generation 7 inch fire hd's and if so would you mind helping me out. Ive been looking for the last week to try to find anything and I'm at a complete roadblock. Please help.

Rootable but no ROMs
You need to be at KFSOWI modding https://plus.google.com/communities/115612726860884592519
If you rooted with Firerooter, trust that community--there are no supported ROMs for Fire OS4. If you haven't rooted, go root. Might find you're good without a ROM. It's easy to block most Amazon and use Gapps on any custom launcher you like. Or best of all possible worlds, set it up so you can switch back and forth between custom launcher and Amazon with one tap.

[Q] Kindle 2 Rooting and Roms

Hello!
So, I'm not really a noob to this, just to this account and posting on the site. Therefore, I am blocked out of the Dev section, which is the only one REALLY for the Kindle 2.
Anyways, I have a question or questions!
I have been a long time android user and loved to modify my phone and try out the tons of new ROMs out there and always have the latest software running.
At work for xmas we had a raffle and I won a Kindle Fire running OS version 10.2.4. Now, I never really touched anything Kindle or any related things so I was out of the loop. I looked some stuff up and surmised that I have a Kindle Fire 2, which is fairly new. I also seemed to find that the Kindle Fire series runs modified android, can be rooted, and the Original Fire has some ROMs for it.
Now, when it comes to the Kindle 2 things seem to be a little confusing.
As far as I can tell, you can root the device, with Qemu method, and install and run android apps? I could not find anything on getting a recovery on the system, and thus, no ROMs. Is this basically true?
If so, is there any news on headway for making this available? I want to work on getting JB or something that is true android running on the Fire but if we don't have much of any progress, then I will just wait.
Thanks!
It seems as though you and I have similar problems. I do have a Kindle 2 and I'm fairly happy with the the actual hardware but I'm not at all satisfied with Amazon's spammy OS. I'm hoping that I can either root it and download something like Go Launcher Ex to get an android style launcher or simply replace the current os with a viable ROM.
Unlike the OP, my experience with this type of thing is very limited and I'm having trouble understanding some of the jargon being used on many of the guides that have been provided on this subject. If anyone would be willing to walk me through this process, I'd really appreciate it. Oh, and my current version is 10.1.1.

[Q] Have I bought the wrong one?

Hello all, just purchased a kindle fire hd 7 as I am after a cheap android (running)tablet mainly for work, so emails, web, diary etc. I was reading though the kindle fire section of xda and saw all the rom options as I want to run one of the jelly bean roms on a kindle. Then when I searched for kindle fire hd I realised that the two different kindles are very different! Can I run any jelly bean rom on my fire hd? I have been in the rom development section and there seems to only be one rom (CM10) and that is still in development but when I go to 'show us your home screen' thread there are loads of android 4.xxxx looking screens.
Can I put a JB rom on my fire HD? I'm not new to roms/rooting etc but am confused at the moment.

SensationAlex,
No, you can not install Jelly Bean on the Kindle HD yet. We are working on a custom ROM
for the Kindle and may release it in about 6 months - so far we are finding the Kindle to
be a real challenge. You bought the best one in the Kindle lineup. The Kindle Fire HD surpasses
most of the 7" tablets in quality and sound. Our company just bought a Nexus 10 and we
really enjoy the speed and the quality of the screen but the Kindle 7" is by far a better
sounding tablet. The Kindle HD Fire is the best sounding tablet, period. So if you love
to watch Movies, you bought the perfect tablet, if you want to do development, you
should get a Nexus 7. You will not like the sound on the Nexus 7", especially when
you have already been spoiled by the Kindle. If you like a challenge and have patience
keep the Kindle, it is top of the class 7". You can Root it, install a custom GUI, Install
Google Play, everything except a custom ROM.
Just been reading the kindle section of xda and have seen what people are doing, I have been using nova launcher for ages on my phone so will put that on my kindle and then with emails, browser and a few other apps I'll be happy. Can I use the stock email app with nova launcher? Or is there a different one?
I'm kind of glad there are no roms for it, will stop me messing about with roms each week!
Nova Launcher on Kindle Fire - Stock email app does work

SensationAlex,
Yes, I can relate, you and I are similar in that manor. I find the Kindle is the most stable tablet in the
office due to that fact. You can use the stock email app with Nova Launcher. As a matter of fact,
you loose nothing when installing Nova Launcher and gain a beautiful interface.

Ne0hacK,
We actually successfully loaded Jelly Bean on the Kindle Fire HD, it was very buggy and is not ready
for production use. We are about 6 months away from releasing the custom ROM for the Kindle
Fire HD 7" current rev 7.2.3. Hashcode released a custom recovery on 11/14/2012 named
Safestrap v3.05 Beta unfortunately this project is "On Hold". We are hoping Hashcode is
able to release a production version of Safestrap prior to our custom ROM. Only time
will tell.........

[Q] How do I know which things are for old vs new FIRE HD?

Hi Everyone,
Is there a simple way to determine which methods to do which things are for which device?
It seems (unless I am missing something-- it wouldn't be the first time) that this forum mixes the 2012 and the new version of the Fire HD and apparently they are so NOT the same device that it could be disastrous to try some of the things listed here.
I bought a Fire HD this Christmas for my daughter and simply want to root it and hopefully install TWRP and a ROM to make it more generically Android. If nothing else, at least get GAPPS, so she won't have to pay for apps she already has on her phone.
I see threads here that imply that it is possible (second bootloader, etc), but there is no mention anywhere if these methods are for the older or newer version (again, unless I have missed it).
I was hoping that at least in this top level forum for all of the Fire HD devices, that in the FAQ it would help spell out what can and can't be done and how to determine the differences by tread title.
If I'm missing something (and again, my ADD makes that a definite possibility :silly, please let me know, but other XDA forums (my Galaxy S4 for example) has rules for how things get posted to help differentiate between hardware differences that could cause a brick to happen.
I understand that there are many more older Fire HD devices out there, but Amazon sold tonnage this past Christmas of the new ones so hopefully good things are in store, but that makes differentiation even more important, no?
Thanks in advance,
Dan

Short answer: no.
You're not missing anything. Many (if not MOST) posts are extremely ambiguous about which hardware is being reference (Kindle, Kindle 2, HD, HD 2, HDX) then there's the size variations. Just the other day I asked a very similar question.
What I can tell you to look for is the firmware version number referenced because that is a great indicator of what's intended. Combine that with other hints and you can usually tell pretty well. For example, Kinde Fire HD could mean the 2012[ish] model that will be running 7.x firmware. The 2013 Kindle Fire HDs will be running 11.x now (if they're updated and as of when I'm posting this). That's the next major clue, look at when the post was made because that likely refers to the generation of device if it's a ROM/HACK (as opposed to inquiry). Firmware names tend to have the hardware nick-name in them too which can help also.
Personally, if I posted something hardware dependent I would provide my model #, year/month purchased, firmware version, model name (HD, HDX) and size.
Blame Amazon for being ridiculous with their product names.
Same boat
I too wish the Kindle names were less ambiguous. Moving forward, i would like to see new threads specify 2012 or 2013 models. I keep clicking on thread after thread hoping that somewhere a Cyanogenmod or other ROM has been found to work on the 2013/SOHO KFHD, but keep going in circles.
There are not many threads about the 2013 Kindle Fire HD 7 because there are not many exploits. There is root, remove lock screen ads and the ability to install Google Play although Google Play at this point is for window shopping only. Attempts to download from the play store, at this point, will freeze the tablet and you will need to reboot it. I added the links in my signature to help people find the few topics available.

[Q] A Couple Kindle Fire HD 7" 3rd Gen. Questions

I'm new to this device, and therefore new to researching about it, so if this question is redundant, I apologise. But even if it is, I hope someone will take a moment to help out.
Just got a Kindle Fire HD 7" 3rd gen for Christmas. The serial number starts with 00D2, and after it went through a couple updates, it's now running Fire OS 4.52 (build 11.4.5.2). I have a factory cord on the way, but I'm looking to be prepared for when it arrives. Is there a way to root this, yet? Can this device be rooted with Firerooter?
Also, if it is possible, I'm possibly looking to install a different ROM as well, and I'm hoping for some recommendations. I want something that offers more customization ability, and a wider set of options, but I don't need something as extravagant as CM 11, for example. I also don't want one that will lag on this device (I hate waiting), or consume the battery much faster than Fire OS 4 does. I'd prefer if it consumed less battery power honestly, but I figure that's asking for too much. Any help is appreciated.
Firerooter. Yes. KFSOWI modding community on Google+

Kindle Fire 7" Kids Edition

Would like to install android on this Kids edition, which I think is prob just a 7" HD Kindle.
I'm sure this has been asked before, but can someone point me in the right direction regarding rooting and installing Android? There are so many posts out there and I'm just not sure which one to use.
Thx in advance!!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3172408 was what I used for the "Ariel" device last year (kid's 7 inch). Unsure if there is a newer device, but it worked for mine and the link might be what you are looking for. Additionally, the devices just picked up an actual developer and CM11.
Thx for pointing me in the right direction. I ended up using this link; http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/root-fire-5th-gen-autoroot-script-noob-t3276923
Worked like a champ!
