I'm by no means an expert, but I have rooted/flashed ROMs on different phones the past few years. This has been my first time running into a phone where the ROMs are picky on which bootloader or radios are installed beforehand. The bootloader/bootstack I understand , but what about radios? Aside from different ROMs requiring certain radio versions, what's the real difference between 12b and 27a? Better signal from towers? Better Lte connectivity?
+1 bump as it would be interesting if someone would be willing to clarify the OP question.

Ok I've been searching the forums for a while now to find answers to my questions and I've answered a few of them but I think I need a little more advice.
I'm using the HTC Touch Diamond and the Model NO shows DIAM500 on the back I've got MP6950, ROM version is 1.22.557.1, Radio Version 1.03.06F. I'm a CDMA user (Pretty sure anyway) and my carrier is Cellular South.
I love my Diamond it's just my carrier that seems to be a problem. I live out in the boonies so my reception is virtually non-existant at home. Not a major problem but an annoying one. It's not just with the Diamond it's with every cell phone I've ever had. Also the battery life could be better I think, I get about 4 hours with pretty moderate use while I have signal (at work). Haven't really done any tweaking YET but I've started messing around today.
Now this brings me to the reason I'm posting. I was looking into updating my ROM but was not able to download the latest from the HTC site (I figured out why). So as far as ROM's go I'm a little confused with all the custom ROMS posted here, I don't really know which would be best for me and if they will work at all and not screw up my phone. Can anyone offer some advice on what ROM is should use?
And I also want to play around with different Radios because I'm under the impression that it could help my reception issue, and then again it probably won't since I've always had this issue. So has anyone had luck with a certain radio helping poor reception? Is there one that would be better for me than the others?
I'm sure these are fairly regular and annoying questions but I just want to make sure I don't throw away the purchase I just made by updating the ROM and radio.
Most of XDA Forum is not for CDMA.
You can always find custom ROMs. Each ROM is different from the others (included applications and options which affect memory usage and performance). So there really isnt a "best ROM." You can check out the thread for CDMA ROMs and make sure you know how to install new ROMs and that you have the needed applications (HardSPL for GSM I dont know if its the same for CDMA). If you have what it takes you can try several ROMs and radios to find the most suitable one for you. Normally this shouldnt harm your phone unless you dont read well before attempting.
Hope this helps.
What are the top 3 AOSP 2.1 for Non-Sprint CDMA Heros?
Trying to avoid issues with PRI, Radio and to suffer from lack of Data while roaming or lack of voicemail notification. Thanks in advance.
darch droid is the only true aosp 2.1 rom here, the others are just stripped of sense apps but still have the framework. They are all excellent choices, however, and I suggest just flashing and trying, and develop your feel and opinion, as everybody's is different (and many phones seems to behave differently as well)
There is also cyanogen mod 6. Its the darchdroid version of 2.2.
Both roms will work with other carriers. You might have to change 1 or 2 things so it doesnt say Sprint, but it will work.
Thanks guys. Will try Darchdroid. Lets see.
Anyone try those listed on Cellular South?
I guess so... see these posts:

Hi Guys
Flashed a few roms on my sexy nexy but my brother had recently flashed a radio and told me of the signal improvement. I'm using Kang O Rama rom and wondered whether anyone could suggest a good radio to flash?
Cheers for any help

First one to say it: Wrong Section
Should be in Q&A.
But, to answer your question, I have seen that it really depends on your own experiences with each radio. I found that none of the 5.XX radios worked well for me. So, I'm running the older radio. But mos people say that the newer ones are better. So, you should just try them out. Just be careful when flashing
Cheers for that. I noticed that I had posted in the wrong forum straight away but didn't know how to move it with tapatalk.
Thanks for the info. Anyone got any recommendations?

same here:
5.12 horrible battery and terrible internet speeds
5.08 terrible battery
4.xx no problems
and the same bad reception on all of them
=> UNLESS you actually have a PROBLEM with the radio, leave it alone!
5.12 radio here, wonderful battery and blazing speeds. No problems at all.
I've been having trouble maintaining a constant data connection (wifi or network) across many roms and different kernels. It really hinders the performance of the device, as every 10 seconds or so I will lose whatever data connection I may have. A few seconds, it will reconnect to an available data connection. I love this device, and hate having this problem. So, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would also like a little guidance on this. I have searched and read several posts from my phone, but I haven't found anything concrete about ATT users flashing radios. Since they're GSM radios it should work, but I prefer to have confirmation before I start writing into those sectors of my phone.

I'm on Rogers, but it's also a North America GSM + LTE. I flashed the Radio from 2.17 base - 4A.16.3250.24_10.38.1150.03L (flashable Zip) from

I also suggest you to first back up your current radio according to the guide in the thread too.
There is also another radio collection thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2342544
Been on xda for a while, and have gone through a few phones, but have never really had the need to flash a radio. Saw there have been updated radios recently, and figured I'd give it a go. Curious which one I should use. I'm on AT&T, but don't know if I should flash the most recent ATT or Google Edition 4.3 radio from HERE. If it matters I'm running CM 10.2 (4.3.)
Thanks!

There's a collection of flashable radios here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2419699
As for which one is best, you will have to experiment yourself; each user has different experiences with different radios, because it depends not only on your carrier but also location, etc.
Just make a note which version you're using now, and you can always go back if you choose.

I am aware, but I was looking from advice from an AT&T user as to which one to go with.
I've used both GE edition and AT&T's newest. I don't really see much of a difference, but my area has good lte coverage.

I've used both the most recent ATT and GE radios and I seem to find a little better reception out of the GE radios. It seems to give me about an extra bar at my house where reception isn't the greatest.
