Hello modders,
I am considering buying the Xperia Z because I really like the device and software.
However after my first hands-on experience, I have discovered that the c6603 model, sold by our carrier (T-Mobile CZ), seems to have LTE disabled. Although the service menu does show all the supported LTE bands, when I go to Settings-Mobile networks and try to change the enabled networks, only the following options are available:
- WCDMA only
- GSM only
- WCDMA/GSM mode
The question remains, how this is controlled and what can be done to enable the search and support for LTE networks.
Is this stored somewhere in some carrier settings file? Is it carrier specific, so that with some operators, this is enabled automatically, for others it's disabled? Can we change it somehow?
I am not feeling quite well about these options being disabled per-carrier.
Thanks.
I think flashing unbranded firmware will work for you.

I found in the UK, the option was missing on my UK Phones 4U firmware (350).
I thought it was some mods initially, but after applying the Greece FTF unbranded update (434), i got it back, even whilst running the same mods.
I flashed the UK 434 FTF update, and it's missing again, with the same mods.
These are only stock mods, status bar menu icons, reboot mod.
I will re flash the Greece Unbranded FTF and confirm if it's still missing, if it is not missing, for some reason, the UK unbranded FTF's (350 and 434) have it missing.
I flashed the .434 Nordic ftf and the LTE option is there. It wasn't on the original 3 rom.
I can't notice any difference at all that its a Nordic ftf and not a uk one, so I'll stick with this.
if LTE option is missing, it's only the option concealed but LTE is still there.
the culprit may be /vendor/overlay/com.android.phone-res.apk. try delete it after rooting.
otherwise, just ignore it and dial *#*#4636#*#* to enter what mode and you can see LTE options there.

This is controlled by your vendor's customisation of the ROM, I am guessing if they have removed LTE, then they do not support it. Therefore not sure why you would want to add it back, because you will not be able to use it. Because once your vendor supports LTE, I am certain they will send you out an update.
My phone has LTE, my provider has LTE. But I had no LTE on my phone, until I changed the plan I was on. And I couldn't force that on, because the vendor blocked that.
In addition as stated here any generic ROM should give you the phone/ROM in all it's glory, provided your vendor has LTE
Did you choose the correct setting in mobile network

I bought a Phones4U unbranded XZ a few days ago, with a T-Mob contract, and it DOES have the option, it had on when I was on 350 and it still has it now on 434. Perhaps it's related to the APN settings that the carrier sends you OTA? Obviously T-Mob is part of EE which has 4G so that could have done something.
I don't understand why your XZ doesn't have the settings though.
Are you sure you have the Z supporting LTE? There is a LTE and non LTE version on sale.

This was my next question, is it possible that the UK firmware reads the SIM card first and then 'knows' wether your current network is able to run LTE / 4G, if it's not, it only allows you to select the most appropriate setting, in my case GSM / WCDMA
Im on o2, not 4G, but the option was still selectable on my old Xperia V, and the Greece Unbranded Xperia Z FTF.
Have you tried a non 4G SIM / network in your phone to see if you get the option or not? Or could you...just to rule this out? If it is most likely APN related, then am not fussed, as soon as O2 has 4G, i should be able to utilize it
Cheers

Again only if your provider has locked this part out of the sim card, pretty crap if they did because this can be easily be controlled from within the network. Because when you scan it should show all networks around even ones you can't connect to, if not they have locked certain bands on the sim
Why does the C5502 offer LTE as an option in the mobile network settings?
Can others confirm this is the case with their phones?
Is this just because firmware is common to both or have I got a mislabelled C5503?
We don't have LTE here so can't test.

Either you are lucky to get a C5503 model out of the box (of a C5502) or the firmware that is currently installed in your phone is for a C5503
Hmmm, model number on phone and in settings says C5502. My wife's C5502 also has the LTE option. Both bought brand new. I imagine it's just a common firmware and there's no way to enable LTE. In service menu the "working bands" only list UMTS bands but LTE is presented as an option in 4636 menu.
Is there a software way to check the radio chip on my phone?
A few days ago, my wife and I both got new Sony Xperia Z3 Compacts. We both activated on Cricket. Everything seems to be working well, but one of the phones shows it is connected to 4G and the other shows it is connected to LTE. Both phones have identical APN settings. Additionally, they have different options for 'preferred network type'. They one that shows LTE can choose
WCDMA only
GSM only
WCDMA (preferred)/GSM
LTE (preferred)/WCDMA/GSM.
The one that shows 4G can choose
4G (preferred)/3G/2G
3G only
3G (preferred)/2G
Can anyone shed some light on why they are showing up differently?
It seems that u have different types of z3c. Maybe one is with another region firmware.
Hit *#*#7378423#*#* on dialer and check under Service info - Software info if the customization version matches. If not, one phone has another region firmware. There is no difference, only that it shows 4g instead of lte and thats the same

Thanks for replying!
They are both D5803, but yes, the customization version on the two are different. The LTE one says 1289-4696_R4C and the 4G one says 1288-6117_R7C. Is there a way to get them the same?
edit: It looks like the answer to my question about making them the same can be found in this thread:

U can use xperiafirm to download the r4c firmware and flash it via flashtool. Make backup of internal memory or uncheck userdata in wipe options or memory will be erased
Model SM-G920TXAR3COK1
Android Version 5.1.1
I have been trying to activate the hidden menus on this device with the ultimate goal of using the menus to force LTE only. I have rooted the phone using the latest version of Odin (I believe 3.10.6 or 3.10.7). I have tried multiple third party apps and I have tried side loading different apk's through adb, but nothing seems to work for me. I haven't been able to find any threads about my situation that could point me in the right direction and would appreciate any help!
That is a cellular south firmware, so is that your carrier? If it is, continue reading, if not you should probably flash the tmobile rom.
What happens when you dial *#0011# ?
And then try *#2263#
If neither of these work it's likely that the hidden menu access is removed from your firmware version by the carrier and there is no way to change that that doesn't involve flashing new firmware. If the phone is carrier unlocked you could flash tmobile firmware on it since it uses the same phone model. Tmobile has hidden menus enabled. You should of course research the risks of doing so and whether that would stop you from using certain carrier features. [I know nothing about Cellular south.]

When I dial *#0011#, I get the ServiceMode menu. Is there more settings to this?
When I dial *#2263#, nothing seems to happen.
2263 is the section of service mode that allows you to specify band selection.

It seems it's removed from your firmware.

I flashed the phone with the T Mobile firmware and I am able to access both codes. However, I am not able to get to the part in the service menu (*#0011#) in which I can select an LTE only mode. The menu doesn't seem to respond to any key inputs. Currently, the phone is unrooted with a firmware of G920TUVS3DOJC. Does it have to be rooted again in order to be able to access that part of the menu? Or is there a different way?
Ah it seems I misunderstood your question a bit. I thought you wanted to force a specific lte band, which 2263 can do. 0011 is not an interactive menu, it's just a status screen. I don't know of any way to force it to LTE so that it never drops off to other mobile technologies.
Edit: If you go to 2263, under band disable settings, select WCDMA [this is I believe what samsung calls HSPA for some reason]. You'll see this: https://puu.sh/nDjIp/d95be8b0a1.jpg
Tap each band there once and the [*] will appear which means it's disabled. Disabling them all should in effect disable HSPA. Hope that helps. Almost positive there's no way to disable things like edge or gprs though.
Hi,
I've got a big issue with Concept Software.
There's no LTE connection available.
I'm using latest Concept Edition 3571 on my D5803.
Any ideas how to solve?
LTE is working on Concept ROM
Is your APN correct?
Yes, APN settings should be ok.
With stock rom LTE was working properly.
Any other ideas?
I had the same problem at the beginning.
How it solved: went into service menu: *#*#SERVICE#*#* and chose LTE only.
After that, I could use the regular user interface choice and has worked ever since.

I've got the same issue on T-Mobile, with build number MMB29V.Z1.3571-somc. I tried the fix you suggested through the SERVICE menu and selected LTE only, but that just resulted in my phone displaying as no reception. Any other ideas anyone might have would be greatly appreciated!
What setting do you have at Wireless & networks / More / Cellular networks / Preferred network type? I have "LTE (recommended)", and my phone connects at LTE if available (with "LTE" displayed at the top) , but at older protocols if not.
Thanks for your replies but the SERVICE menu hint also doesn't work for me.
Seems that I've got the same problem as hwcl.
