[Q] Google Play Services Wakelock - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone is not sleeping. I just got it and promptly rooted and decrypted. I tired BlissPop first and I am currently on Chroma. With both roms I used Banks GApps and with both I have these wakelocks from Google. I have tried both Franco and LK with them too. Not saying it's definitely GApps fault. Could be related to another app I have installed. Gmail, Textra, and Calendar storage all have a lot of wakeup triggers. Any help is appreciated.

Are you on Lollipop 5.0.1 and what version of Google Play Services?
If you are on Play Services v7, lots of people including myself have experienced bad wakelock issues in the last few days, from System Update Service in particular.
Unfortunately, Play Services updates itself automatically and silently in the background. If you use TiBkup and have a backed up version of Play Services v6, you can restore v6. But the fix is temporary; sooner or later the background update will take place and upon a reboot, v7 will take hold and your wakelock problem will be back. You can restore v6 again, or
Another fix is to stay with v7 but use an app from the Playstore called Disable Service to actively turn on the System Update Service each time after a reboot.
Ultimately our only hope lies with Google fixing up Play Services.

Ah I see, well at least there's nothing wrong with my phone. I am on Chroma which is version 5.0.2. Using Banks GApps with Play Services 7.0.87. Thanks for the response.

What's with the mandatory 128MB update when you first boot the phone?
This thing runs HOT - 15 minutes and the back top of the phone is way warmer than my N4. Can't wait for devs to get kernel control apps going.......
GPS lock is FAAASSST. That was one of things I cared about. Much quicker than the N4.
LTE speed/signal seems low for where I am - map says I should be getting full connection (Denver area). But it works!
Volume is PITYFUL even at full! Hoping some FauxSound magic on this in the future.
Play Store Update Issues:
I have about 9 play store updates (Youtube, Google Earth, Twitter, TrustGo Antivirus) that all say 'update', but the store won't update them. It shows as downloading then nothing happens.
I'll call Google and ask about this, but clearly a bug!
I believe I've had that issue with apps not updating in the past...
I *think* I fixed it by deleting the Google Play data/cache.

Thanks for the reply
UPDATE:
A quick power down and reboot, and apps are updating just fine.
Sorry for the false alarm on the play store stuff.
The thing I found annoying was that it was auto installing apps I had installed across both my n4 and n7. I do understand that it was just looking at my account and installing the aggregate of installed apps. When I tried to remove them it tried to auto install the apps I didn't want on my phone TWICE more. It was like whack-a-mole.
Finally seems to have conceded that I actually do know which Apps I want on my phone..

stop Google play services auto update

Hi guys, i have a question. Is there any way to stop Google play services auto updates? I ask, because suddenly my battery drain problem on kit kat came back, and lookin i found that Google ps was on versión 5.x, so i uninstalled updates an left it on versión 4.x, and everything came back to normal.
settngs/apps/all apps , google playstore service... go to manage n clear all data... den uninstall...den disapble
Then he won't have Google Play services at all. It's not what he's asking for.
OP - no, unfortunately there is no way to stop it from auto-updating. However, if you clean the data as I wrote here - you might get lucky and not have any drain with version 5.x. I have it and it's fine.

Thanks man, i'll try that
Wakelock Termination....
There is only one way perfectly working for me so far with all updates for Google play services....
Install Xposed Framework
Install Wakelock Terminator Wakelock Terminator on Play Store
Activate it in Xposed
Open the Wakelock Terminator and look for google play services
Activate Wakelock Terminator for Google Play Services (In free version only 1 can be added to wakelock).
Add these values in the Filter for Google Play Services
NlpCollectorWakeLock NlpWakeLock CheckinService NetworkLocationLocator
Restart.... You can even check it in app and running menu in settings that you would only see 1 process running for play services and it won't be keeping your CPU awake..... Check it using Wakelock Detector....
Go ahead and give it a try and enjoy.... :good:

I think with the advent of Google Play Services 6.5.99 (or perhaps a bit earlier) the auto-update issue has become a problem again.
According to my recent observations Google Play Services 6.5.99 performs periodic location pings (every 15min) or so. With my settings ("Device only" location mode, but "Location reporting" and "Location history" turned "Off"), it is using GPS and thus unnecessarily drains the battery.
I don't see the problem with Google Play Services 6.1.05 so I'd rather wish Google would not auto-update Google Play Services.
Call me a newbie (I'm fine with that because I am as far as Android is concerned) but I find it outrageous that Google can update a core component on my phone without my consent, introducing phone issues, sub-par performance, or undesired behaviour at their whim. An opt-out facility for the auto-updates would be the least one would expect.
The Google Play Store allows one to opt out of automatic updates to downloaded applications so why isn't this setting not consulted when it comes to "Google Play Services"? I realise that probably no one here knows the answer, but I found it very hard to find a place to actually provide Google with feedback regarding "Google Play Services".

I ve faced the same isse with the repeated gps activities since the last update from the play Services.
But i think the cause of this phenomenon is the Google search! Ive disabled the google search app, and now I dont have this strange gps requests!

Thanks heaps for confirming.
I wasn't sure whether my (stock) system got messed up somehow.
I wonder why there hasn't been more of an outcry over the new location pinging behaviour. I find it unacceptable and can only believe it is due to a bug rather than intended.
I hope that future versions of "Google Play Services" will behave differently and found it frustrating that I couldn't locate a forum where Google developers would be listening to "Google Service Play" concerns. I made a post in a "Google Search" thread at a Google forum (not allowed to link to it yet) but I'm afraid it is off-topic there.

I first believed "Google Search" to be the culprit as well because disabling it got rid of the location pings.
However, that only worked once and later attempts to kill the pings by disabling "Google Search" were unsuccessful. Perhaps you should check once in a while whether the pings are coming back because it appears to me that it really is "Google Play Services" and it is just being triggered by various sources.
Also, being able to initiate a google search by just wiping up the home button, is a rather crucial feature to me. Disabling "Google Search" would force me to fire up a browser instead which would be a lot more cumbersome. Given that a different version of "Google Play Services" does not perform the pings even while "Google Search" is available, I'd say one should attempt to tackle the problem by addressing "Google Play Services" not "Google Search".
BTW, I opted out of "Google Now" just to make sure that there aren't any location based cards that request location updates.

Drain impossible to fix

Hello,
After many weeks trying to solve Google Play Services, I still have this boring issue.
I'm using Slimm Rom 3.8 with Locked Bootloader
- GPS, Wifi and NFC always off
- Stamina always on
- Brightness under 25%
I don't use much the phone (No facebook, less than 30min on internet, no Youtube, no Music)
I tried :
- to disable SystemUpdateService from Google Play Services and Google Framework with the App "Disable Servces"
- Uninstall updates of Google Play Services and reinstall in both way (Play Store / with APK)
- Using Amplify, AppOpsXposed, Greenify, PowerNap (from this link : https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/guide-extreme-battery-life-t3095884) and Force Doze
- Disable all Xposed modules (for now I'm using Android N-ify, BootManager, Greenify, Hide Emergency Button & Marshmallow SD Fix)
- Factory reset / flash KitKat .ftf file / Root again / Flash Slimm Rom
I also tried with other Rom like eXistenZ Marshmallow v5.6.5 and AOXP 1.5.7 ROM but I till have the issue.
I took some screenshots so maybe it can help you find what is causing drain.
Thank you in advance for your help
i use slimm and sometimes the battery percentage is going for example from 65% to 59% ,etc, and not only; i had xperience rom from marillia, cm12, existenz, and some - resulty is same. Next time my friend, dont buy SONY!!! ) that i said to myself. Anyway, what i saw from ur picture, google play services drain a lot of battery; also ur signal is very poor.
Try to set ur network to gsm only (not lte./edge) for normal use, and see that guide...maybe will help u. Also that
I've been fighting with Google Play Service for months because of the battery drain problem. In the end (tired of changing rom ecc..) I founded the solution on the last Xperia Concept Rom without root. Now the drain is totally gone, and I get 2 days battery life with ~5/6h screen time (using greenify only for aggressive doze, and having FB, Messenger, WA, telegram, gmail ecc..). Before, on others rom I couldn't get more than 4h screen time lately, so I'm super happy

I know the feeling! But consider that on concept you don't have any, and the few Google apps I don't use are disabled. The only real thing I missed was double tap lock screen off, but I managed with Power Toggle :good:

I have posted several times in this thread ways to fix the Google battery drain. It's now such a long thread that some people may have missed my previous posts, so to summarise : (this is not guaranteed to fix your phone, I am just trying to help)
Method 1
Factory reset, restart to recovery, flash full Slim rom(nothing else) . Restart. Log in to Google from scratch, leave the phone for some time before installing any mods. Let Google phone home and set the phone up before installing Xposed, amplify, firewall etc etc.
Restore apps with Titanium Backup, but just apps+data, NO system apps, NO Google apps. I realise a full factory reset is beyond most users compression, but this is really the best way and will fix 90% of the problems I see posted on the thread.
Method 2
The lazy 'I don't believe I need to do a factory reset' method
Disable all Xposed modules, go into airplane mode, no wifi.
Reboot phone.
Delete your Google account.
Use Titanium Backup to delete the data on the following apps:
Google account manager
Google backup transport
Google play services
Google play store
Gmail
Google calendar sync
Google contacts sync
Google bookmarks sync
Google services framework
Download manager
(it will get more & more difficult to do this as once you remove the Google account, Google. gms, keeps FCing)
Reboot to recovery, wipe cache & dalvik, reboot phone.
Enable network.
Add Google account, leave it with 'synchronise accounts' for some time, let Google do its thing before enabling Xposed or any other system mods(important)
Enabling a firewall or excessive privacy control (like trying to mask your IMEI or account) will just piss GPS off and it will try even harder to phone home, causing huge battery drain. The more you try and block the various Google services the more they try get out.
I don't believe that the battery drain is connected to this rom specifically. I know the Dev has made some tweaks to try and help, but if you take the time to read the Google forums, this problem effects most makes of phone and all firmware versions.
Edit: You should always do a recovery backup before making any changes to your phone, I am not responsible blah blah blah

Google Play Services

Morning all!
I appreciate your help on previous posts of mine and I'm looking to seek your help once more.
I use several apps that use the Google API for maps, unfortunately (aside from actual Google apps) this doesn't work. It simply says 'Google Play services are updating'. Except when I go to the settings, they are not.
Is anyone else having this issue/has been able to find a workaround?

Yeah, unfortunately this seems to be the case for me too. I haven't been able to find a more permanent workaround.
Fortunately i figured out!
This is happening due to beta version of google play services. I unistalled the latest updates and it came to a version 11.9.75. Then, it didn't upate anymore, unless i download an app called Play Services Info.
If you stay at version 11.9.75 then there is no problem at in-app maps (reboot it or not).

Thanks. This also fixed an issue for me I was just about to ask about, where all links from my Google feed refused to open in anything but Chrome and the option to "open web pages in the Google app" was greyed out (and Opera as my default browser was also ignored).
I was also unable to sign into Chrome, it said my account was already in use. Seems to be working now.
I wonder what's going on here? Never seen anything like it on my previous Samsung phones.
Just had the update to 110 UK, but the issue has just occurred again.
It's getting ridiculous!
Same issue here, and I can't log into Chrome .. Says "Syncing to .." and never updates. Some apps are forcing me to update Google Play Services, so this is a mess .. If you update play services then Uber and Maps, along with some other apps won't work!

only workaround is to clear all google play services data
I am also struggling under this.
My Fitness apps doesnt shop a map until i delete the play service data. Works until the next reboot. Hope someone is fixing this soon.
The temporary fix results in all credit/debit cards vanishing from the Google Pay app.
So basically I just uninstalled the current updated version of google play services and forced google play to no auto-update. This seems to have fixed the issue temporarily. If you stay at version 11.9.75 then there is no problem.
Hi all,
Android app developer here. This is an issue with the latest Google Play Services (12.6.73 released on 10th May) and has been affecting Huawei devices and maybe some other vendors.
You can check the progress on it on Google issue tracker here.
Also from what I've read the "clear app data" fix is just temporary, issue returns after device restart or after some time. Google seems to be already working on the issue so I think it would be best to wait it out unfortunately
I have a couple of issues it seems besides the map issue:
2 factor prompt doesn't work anymore, and the google assistant options are broken.
Couldn't log into chrome with my google account either but that seems to be fixed after a factory reset.
Edit: most of the issues seem to be fixed now. Still no working 2 factor prompt. Other than that everything is fine again

Yes I was having the problem too until I disabled Play Services and left the beta program in the play store, then updated again. Leaving the beta definitely solved the issue.

Google Play Services won't run unless you update Google Play Services

This notification keeps on popping, I already searched for solution in the net but it is till persisting. I tried clearing GPS cache and data, FC GPS, restart, manually updated the app and downloading from apkmirror the latest. Also tried updating from PS but it says it is up to date and my only option in PS Is to deactivate GPS.
All Google apps are working like playstore, Google search and etc.
I'm on stock, non rooted, exynos, SM-950F/DS, on latest security patch. I'm using swift installer fully updated.
Why did not you update google play services directly from play store? I have had bad experiences with substratum and other theming tools, they create some problems when updating firmwares and some other apps and components, it is mandatory to uninstall ALL the theming and overlay elements when updating system components

Win is right. You need to go through the official play store. Google beefed up its security to keep malicious apps and pirated apps off any phones. So its caused problems when your trying to update system apps from a 3rd party source. The best thing is to find a full most recent gapps package that includes play store and play store services and id use adb. I dont know if it would work but thats my suggestion.

I had that problem once on a LG G3.
I found out that the play store and play services was not compatible with my device. Cause some apps, even play store are tweaked differently for some phones. I had to find one that was report as working just fine with my phone and had to double check that the play services was the right one for the version of play store that was in the package.
