[Q] Motorola Device Manager (Lost Phone) Cannot See My Device - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Moto X 2014 running latest Lollipop
I have a screen lock;
Motorola Device Policy is On;
Motorola ID is linked to my Google Account;
Location Services set to High Accuracy.
However, Motorola Device Manager cannot locate my phone (shows last known location, but times out trying to locate, and can't reach phone to ring, lock, etc.
Interesting enough, Android Device Manager CAN find it, I KNOW that they both do the same functions, but I have other reasons for wanting to run Motorola's Iteration.
Any ideas?

[Q] Network/Cell Location not working

I have a Razr i on Orange UK, and have found that apps that use the network/cell location (instead of Wifi or GPS) don't work. I've tested this with various apps, but the problem can be seen with Google Maps:
- Disable GPS and Wifi in settings
- Tap location crosshairs and wait
- A 'waiting for location' message will appear, followed a few seconds later by 'your current location is temporarily unavailable'
I'm not sure if this is an issue with my provider (Orange) or with the phone itself. Can anyone else reproduce this issue?
I have the same issue here in Brazil with my provider (Claro).
My other 2 phones can find the location using the network, with a precision of about 1km, but RAZR i doesn't even "try" to find it. I receive the same message as you using Maps. One of that other 2 phones is a Motorola Spice XT300 (using Android 2.1 at the same provider), so this issue may be especific for this device or for the newest versions of Android.
I would like to use the location based on the network to activate wifi and other tasks with the SmartActions (without GPS, wifi and bluetooth to save battery), if somebody knows a way to make this work, I would be very thankful too.
I can try this later today on my father's Galaxy SII (using ICS too), and will post here the result if anyone doesn't post it before me.
EDIT: I tested it again, and it works! Maps could find my location with a good precision (better than 100m) only using the 3G network. By the way, the SII can do this too. I don't know why it works now, but maybe with a 2G network the device can't find the location.
I found a fix for a similar sounding issue here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9576852&postcount=108 However that fix requires root access which I'm not currently willing to try on my new Razr i.
After reading that link, I did manage to fix it for now by going to Settings > Apps > All > Google Services Framework and pressing the Clear Data button. I was prompted again to enabled Location Services. I then rebooted my phone. After a reboot the Play Store didn't work at first, but it sorted itself out after a few minutes.
I'll say that this is fixed 'for now'... some other threads discussing similar problems show that such fixes sometimes stop working after a period of time.

[Q] T-Mobile Tethering Verification

When turning on tethering though the system (not a separate app), I'm seeing a message along the lines of 'Verifying subscription with T-Mobile servers'. I never saw any message like this on my 2013 Moto X. Tethering still activates, but I'm worried about this causing any issues later.
Is anybody else seeing this? Any issues?
I'm on the $30/mo plan with a Moto Maker pure edition.
I see the same thing. It's normal.
My 2014 X on T-Mobile eventually stopped going past the "Verifying Account" stage. It now notifies me that I do not have T-Mobile Mobile Hotspot on my plan, and thus cannot use WiFi tethering.
I switched to PdaNet and Bluetooth instead, which is working fine.
Edit: This is a Pure Edition phone.

I had that warning once. A restart fixed it. It was odd because I decided to call in to tech support first, then while on the phone I restarted my X and it started working again, hah.

That's disturbing. I was thinking of getting this phone, but I don't want to give up tethering. I'm assuming a custom ROM (Cyanogen, etc.) would solve the problem?
Have you tried to see if this also makes USB tethering stop working?
Might be plan dependent
Does your plan include tethering?

I thought all T-mobile plans supported tethering up to the LTE data limit per month?

I think all the new simple choice ones do.
I'm still using my Pure on Tmo, and tethering still works.
I thought if you had a stock rom or something like Cyanogen, they couldn't really block (or detect) tethering, regardless of plan, carrier, etc. Is that incorrect?
Yeah, the plan includes tethering. I've check my usage and I now see it split between "data" and "mobile hotspot usage" (see attached screenshot). On my 2013 moto x I've never seen the hotspot usage and any data used while tethering just fell under the "data" label - same as any other data on my line. I read something (forget where) about there being a change in 4.4.4 (for 2013 moto x) which tags data used by the hotspot as such. I assume this is how t-mobile can tell the difference.

I hate stuff like that. Carriers and manufacturers shouldn't be able to control and monitor how people use their devices so much. This does make me hesitate about the Moto X. I'm used to Nexus devices where I have a lot more control over things like this, even if it requires a custom ROM.
I agree. It really has me rethinking my decision to hold on to the x. Might move to the nexus when it releases.
Yeah, I'm feeling torn. The 2nd Gen. Moto X is about as close as anything has gotten to what I'm looking for in terms of hardware (if it only had OIS). And of course it is a near stock experience that can be modified with xposed to have features found in custom ROMs. But for the under the hood, keeping the user in control, and privacy stuff, I just trust Cyanogen and other ROMs more. And yet if the 1st Gen. Moto X is any indication, custom ROMs will break some of the unique features on the Moto X, like active notifications and always listening voice controls. On the other hand, if the next Nexus really has a 6" display, I just don't know if I want an enormous phablet. So it's a hard choice.
I had this trouble as well on the prepaid unlimited data plan. I should be entitled to 2 1/2 GB of tethering. I tried three or four times and restarted the phone and it eventually went through with no extra tinkering on my part. Good luck!
After a week of not having tethering, I tried a few things and got it working! I don't have tethering on my T-Mobile plan, and every time I tried to enable wireless tether in the settings menu, I got the T-Mobile verification failed. But that's all good, now.
So here's what I did:
1) Unlock Bootloader, Custom Recovery, Root (Basically, just get root access on your phone)
2) Download the Xposed Module "Xtether" and activate it. This gets rid of the verification message, but tethering still didn't work, it just got the wifi tether to turn on.
3) Download SQlite Editor from the app store
4) Go to Settings Storage (the one that has "com.android.providers.settings" at the bottom > settings.db > global
5) Add "tether_dun_required" with a value of "0"
6) Go to your APN settings. Create a new APN entry, and set it up the same as your fast.t-mobile.com one, except use IPV4 (IPV6 will not work)
7) Reboot, and you're good!
Wrote this hastily, so if you need clearer instructions, just ask!
Thanks for the explanation Moose8106.
So am I correct in understanding that the tethering function built into AOSP Android (and normally available on Nexus devices) is deliberately modified in the stock Moto X ROM to allow carriers to scrutinize (and possibly limit) how you are using your mobile bandwidth?

I don't think it's deliberately modified for the Moto X ROM. I believe it's a restriction of AOSP Android: danielpocock.com/android-betrays-tethering-data
Tethering worked fine on my Galaxy Nexus and when I upgraded to the Moto X 2014 Pure I thought Motorola had applied this tethering restriction but further investigation led me to believe that even the Nexus devices have this issue.

Hmm, I've never had an issue on my Nexus One or my current Nexus 4 (though I'm still--lamely--using Jelly Bean, maybe KitKat introduces a problem). Well, accept that I find I have to change the DNS servers to OpenDNS on my laptop or otherwise I have problems connecting when I tether over USB.

I believe this feature came on an update. It might have been 4.4.4. On Nexus 5, if you didn't want reporting tethering to the carrier you needed to modify the "tether_dun_required" line to 0. This being a Google Play purchased Nexus 5. Here's more info in the Nexus 5 forums.

So, nothing to do with Moto X itself. I haven't tried it yet but yea, this method should also work on the the Moto X.

[Q] Tap & Go disabled for Moto G 2014?

I've got two Moto G 2014 phones, one of them being a new one I got a week ago. I'm in the UK and the 5.0.2 Lollipop OTA update arrived a couple of days ago. Today I updated both phones to Lollipop which worked perfectly.
Motorola Migrate only migrates the data, so I tried to use the new Tap & Go feature to migrate all my apps etc to the new phone, effectively to clone it, but Tap & Go seems to be missing. I don't get the option to pair the new phone with an existing phone at first boot after a factory reset and if I add my Google account, it goes through the normal setup wizard except that the Tap & Go setup part is missing from it.
I've spent a lot of time trying to get this to work this evening including the obligatory googling for it, but come up with nothing, including on XDA, therefore I hope someone here can confirm if Tap and Go has been disabled for this model and perhaps why. If it's actually supposed to work, then I'll be grateful for any troubleshooting tips to help make it work.
Tap & Go only works with NFC (Near Field Communication), for which our devices lack the chip.
And there's me thinking that NFC was a generic name for Bluetooth which works at short distances, lol.
Looking it up on Wikipedia, I can see that Bluetooth costs $5 for the tag (which we have) while NFC is a mere 10c and yet it doesn't have it. Shame, this important new feature could have easily been implemented to work over Wi-Fi and should have been, in my book.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Near_field_communication#Comparison_with_Bluetooth
Have you tried migrate?
Yes first thing I did with both phones on KitKat. It copied over all the data perfectly, but I did notice that there weren't any options to copy the apps, settings and screen configs. Hence I was disappointed, but not surprised when it didn't copy these things.
I then saw that Lollipop had this cloning function (Tap & Go) which was just what I wanted, got confused over the meaning of NFC, upgraded both phones to Lollipop and discovered that I couldn't use T&P. Very frustrating, especially as this functionality can easily be implemented over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. I'll bet when Lollipop was being developed, the beta testers suggested this functionality and were quite annoyed that this wasn't done when there's no technical reason for not doing so.

Moto X 2nd Generation XT1097 Gmail confirmation Loop

Hello people!
Before posting looked forum andnot found something that really was functional for my business.

And just entering this confirmation loop problem, I tried another email that I created and nothing worked .. I tried to wait ace famous 72hrs after hardreset and anything else that tried:
*/watch-g v = lRxev6aVy (Youtube)
(I do not have the option of USB Enabled, then it did not work)

I wonder if here in the forum have this or another method that can solve my problem ..
Well, so far I have not had even a method that solves my problem , I'm trying in some way the flash unit , the most of such OEM options are disabled as well as USB Debugging, has some way to enable ADB or via fastboot via pc ?

No, it can't be done. You have to be able to get into the phone to turn on ADB.
There is no solution that you can do. You need to ask the previous owner to login then remove the account. You can't do anything yourself.

Have you heard of the method I mentioned above ? Sera that it is really possible? I think is something like this :

There is no way around it. You must talk to the person whose account is on the phone. There is no other way.

Auto Sync keeps turning off

So I've had an Android phone since the OG Moto Droid from 2008, so I'm not noob by any means.
Every since the November security update (T-Mobile S10) my auto sync turns off randomly, multiple times per day. This has lead to GMail, Google Calendar, and Keep Notes app to not sync unless I do it manually.
I've made sure that none of those apps are being optimized for battery. I've made sure to check off that they are allowed to work in the background, etc. I've tried clearing cache on my old phone; and I say old phone because I had spilled a beverage on my old S10 and the charging port was messed up and wouldn't fast charge, so I used my insurance deductible to get a new phone. My new S10 is having the exact same problem.
If you do a Google search, on the official Google Android forums there are other people with this problem, but no one seems to have found a fix.
Hoping someone on here might have a suggestion for me. Thanks.
