I have downloaded the latest build of CM12, and it reboots into TWRP but i have no idea where it saves the new version to install. Does that wipe out what i have already set up on the phone? This is the first time i've done this so i am not sure how this is supposed to work.
I just go here:
https://download.cyanogenmod.org/?device=trltetmo
I Download the latest nightly. It puts it in my download folder. I then boot into recovery. Then I go to my download folder and flash the latest nightly I just downloaded.
I usually dirty flash unless there have been major changes, so I keep my setup.

How do i specify a dirty flash?
You just don't wipe data. I still usually wipe cache and dalvik cache.
my advice is to do ALOT more reading before you flash ANYTHING to your device
otherwise, you will end up with an expensive paperweight

I've been doing this for a little bit, i've just never needed to do nightlies. My last phone was a note 2 and by the time i started flashing there were plenty of ROMs out there for it.
If you dont know where your downloads go, and if you dont know what a dirty flash is, you need to do more reading before you ruin your phone..
but hey, knock yourself out, and hope you dont own a 700 dollar paperweight soon

i had some questions
1) do i just put the update on my sd card, boot into recovery and flash it?
2) do i also have to flash gapps again?
3) will i have to back up all my apps and settings and start from scratch when flashing a nightly?
4) are there any risks flashing a nightly other than the normal risks associated with flashing an RC version?
5) is the back up feature in rom manager the same thing as a nandroid back up?
6) finally, what is the most current clockwork recovery and how do i update to it?

Just to add a little more info:
2. CM does not include GAPPS in any of the ROMS. If you are coming from any other ROM, you need to do a full wipe and reflash the latest GAPPS.
3. If coming from another ROM, then yes as you will have to do a full wipe. But, once you are on Nightlies or an RC, you can just flash to the latest and all of your apps and settings will be preserved (including GAPPS).

I just flashed the latest nightly from RC1 and my GAPPS weren't there so I had to reinstall. It might have been an isolated incident, but you can just test it by installing the nightly and going back and reinstalling GAPPS if they're not preserved. Everything else will be there though since you don't need a full wipe when installing nightlies.
thanks for the help
to elaborate more on the quesiton about risk, what i meant was will the phone work to make calls and txts? do i have to worry about my alarm going off for no reason, things like that.

yes or no. the phone should work 99.9% of time but there might be bugs like alarm going off for no reason. you take the risk by running pre-final builds. if you see something unexpected, you can always report bugs.
I am running CM-7.0.3 on sd. I have been trying to add OC kernel. I have tried several including, update-CM7-dalingrin-OC-sd-042411ext4, update-CM7-dalingrin-OC-sd-052311 and update-CM7-dalingrin-OC-sd-060911. I unzip the file and copy the uImage file to the sd card. When I reboot with the new kernel, it sys "loading", then the screen flashes, then goes black. I can copy the original uImage file back to the sd card and it works fine. I guess I should leave well enough alone, but it is bugging me that I can not get it too work. What am I doing wrong?
Which kernel should I use and how can I get it to load?
Thanks for any help.
I haven't flashed anything on my nook for a while, let alone a new kernel, but I don't believe you should be unzipping the file once downloaded. You should be able to download it straight on your nook, navigate to it through clockwork recovery, flash it, then reboot, and you should be good. There might need to be some wiping of cache and/or dalvik cache too, but I don't remember 100%

yup or flash it through Rom manager.
I tried flashing the zip. When it rebooted it would not load. I had to totally start over and reload everything. When, before or after flash, and how do you clear the cache and/or dalvik cache? I do not want to start over again.
Thanks
All three kernels that you have tried are not intented to be used on CM 7.0.3; In order to use any of those, you need to be running at least nighty 88. THis is due to the fact that these kernels are based on a newer build (.32), and CM7 had to be updated as well.
As it is, you really owe it to yourself to update to nightly 98, as alot of improvements have been added since 7.0.3...
Thanks for the reply s.
For those of you who are using CM-7.0.3 on a SD card, which OC are you using how did you get it to work?
Just get one of the archived ones Dal has (4/04 one?)

Do I flash with install zip from sdcard in cwm recovery or thru pc with acmeinstaller?
DL to your TP then flash with CWM by selecting install zip and navigating to your download folder.
Its also worth DL the correct gapps just in case you need to flash it, although it shouldn't be necessary .
Also don't forget to make a backup BEFORE flashing .
Have fun

Thank you very much!
PS Pomozi brate !
Flashing means installing stuff using a recovery like cwm or twrp
Please before you proceed do read some information about basic android knowledge,
or you run the risk of running into more disadvantages than bemefits from custom roms and such

I am aware of that,I've already flashed a JB over ICS using this method ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2134192 ),but that was a long time ago,and then i did not need to root my phone or unlock bootloader.
I am wondering if that method is still good,or should i try another one?I have tried to find a thread where there is explained how to flash using cwm or twrp, but was unable to find it so i would be very greateful if someone points me to a thread where there is explanation on how to do that.

For bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2224020
Then follow instructions from second post
After you do steps from 0 to 3 (dont forget to put files into your internal memory), you will turn off your phone, press and hold power and volume down button simultaneously, when LG logo appears, press power button three times while still holding volume down, then you can release everything and you should be into recovery witch should look similar to this http://techbeasts.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/la-foto.jpg. Now you do steps 4-7, in backup and restore (witch is step 4), just press backup and wait a minute or two for backup to complete. Then go back and press install zip from sd card, then navigate to ROMs zip file you downloaded and click it. You will see output screen showing progress... after ROM is flashed, go again to install zip from sd card, this time you will chose gapps zip file. After that, go back, do wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache partition and in advanced tab wipe dalvik cache. Go back, reboot and you should be done!
IF anything goes wrong with flashing, you will reboot into recovery and go backup and restore, and restore.

Ok,now that I am an "expert" on flashing all kind of things (ROMs,kernels,CWM,etc),I have different kind of questions....
1)With Vanir 4.4.2 latest nightlies and iodak 9.5 or 9.9 (whatever),havent tweek anything and left it be as it is, my battery drain is catastrofic. For example with JB 4.1.2 when I leave my phone overnight it drains 1-2-3% but with vanir it goes to 15-20%....Why is that?
Also, when i leave wifi on with no surfing, couple sms and maybe 1 min of calls it drains 15-20%.And that is with brightness lowered to 50% (on my JB I allways kept it on 100%).
2)Why are my antutu results that much different on vanir and cm11?I've got almost 16k on vanir and barely 11k on cm11.
Your final observation kinda answers the previous questions, it is a performance driven rom and this usually implies less battery life.
On the other hand I can say that your drain seems a little too high, but without some battery stats it's hard to say....
Apologies for duplicating this post but the original forum was apparently the wrong spot for this.
I need either some pointers or a reference to a how-to, if you please.
My Nexus 6 is currently running Pure Nexus 6.0.1-2060821-official, security patch 8/5/2016 with ElementalX kernel 3.10.40-ElementalX-N6-3-20.
I've updated Pure Nexus before through TWRP and all went well, but those efforts never involved updating the kernel too. I've attempted to flash the new kernel, the rom and the google apps, but the phone goes into a never ending boot effort and it's a tussle getting back to recovery mode as it tends to boot loop. The flashes are preceded by clearing Delvik and cache and cleared again after the flash.
Is the order of flashing off or perhaps not enough clearing of other items such as system? Or is a factory reset needed?
Kind of lost on this one and can't seem to string together enough search terms to find help specific to the problem.
Any help would be appreciated.
The kernel is most likely not updated to work with the rom. Each rom comes with its own kernel so you really don't have to flash a new one. I would flash the rom and gaps and see what happens. Leave the kernel out of it for now. You have to remember that not all kernels work on all roms. Many roms are making it so only their kernel works properly.

Still no-go. Freshly downloaded purenexus_shamu-7.1.1-20170215-OFFICIAL and Full_Dynamic_GApps-7.1.x-20161215, checked the MD5s, and flashed both after cache/Dalvik. Still got the same 4-color bouncing dots. Let it run like that for about 40 minutes before getting back into recovery.
Ran the same flash but this time also wiped system. Same result.
Is 40 minutes enough time? Impatience maybe?
Now back to original 6.0.1, PureNexus 6.0.1-20160821 and 3.10.40-ElementalX-N6-3.20 kernel.

You are doing a full wipe right? Wiping system and data before flashing?
Also encryption could be an issue. If your device in encrypted or the kernel did not remove the force encryption flag. That could take awhile as well.

Got the Feb GApps, wiped Dalvik and cache... this time I let it run for a bit over an hour in case the encryption was an issue. There's a little over 19 GB in files. I figured an hour would be enough but no luck. Had to recover again from backup.
TWRP gives 5 items that can be wiped, Dalvik, System, data, Internal Storage and Cache. I was of the understanding that data pertained to user data (photos, notes, etc). Most all of that is backed up but I'm unclear on what needs wiping for this Nougat upgrade. When I wiped system, it didn't seem to help - although I was using the older GApps at that point. I've seen documentation that says to wipe these items at the outset and others that suggest after the flash is complete. Both? Which ones?
I don't want to resort to drastic measures if it's something simple that I've missed.
Needs Nougat bootloader and latest radio--flash in TWRP. This allows flashing N ROMs while will still work with all MM or even 5.1 ROMs

What TWRP version? Old one cause problems on newer ROMS. Newest is 3.1.0, but 3.0.3 or 3.0.2 should be ok.
Wipe everything - /system, /data, /cache. /dalvik. Do NOT wipe Internal Storage (camera photos, downloads, etc.) before flashing. Data is usually app data, so make a nandroid first to save it, but app data can usually be restored with Titanium Backup or Google will restore it on setup. Just do not restore any system data.
Bootup on clean flash does take time, but normally no more than 20-25 minutes.
Try reverting to stock
Install stock firmware using adb
TWRP version might be the glitch.... Mine reports 2.8.5.0 in recovery mode. I'll update to the latest and retry after wiping all but internal storage. If that fails, I'll flash the boatloader and radio.
Once more into the breach.

You should really update the bootloader/radio to the latest once you update the TWRP. Updating the bootloader/radio will not affect your internal storage.
