I had a wifi only Tab before so I'm not unfamiliar with Tab devices. Or so I thought. I bought a Sprint Tab off Woot recently. I sold the Wifi Tab on ebay and basically traded up for better hardware at no cost.
Anyway, the Tab from Sprint came in today and I find I have two questions.
1. This Tab appears to have no internal memory. When I go to settings for the SD card, it only sees my external card. That's also all that maps on my computer. The Wifi Tab had either 8 or 16 gb internal plus and external card. Is this normal?
2. I was under the impression that I was going to have to activate this thing with Sprint for at least a month. That doesn't appear to be the case though. It does gripe at me to activate, but doesn't seem to be forcing me to do so and even without being activated has pulled down at least two OTA updates. Is this normal?

Your internal memory is not an sd card. It isn't listed in that section.

Pulling down the updates occurs over wifi, it will happen regardless of CDMA service.
If you want to get rid of the hassles:
First root, use superoneclick, its the easiest method.
Then use a program such as root uninstaller to uninstall sprintadroidextension.apk (you can also freeze it, allegedly).
Once you do this, be aware that if Sprint updates it won't download properly and start harassing you about that instead (albeit less frequently). The only solutions are to reflash back to stock and then update, or modify your build.prop file to change the build id (I used remount and notepad to do it).

I rooted with SuperOneClick and now have these OTA's downloading... I'm wondering what the pro's and con's are with taking these two OTA's? Have you already rooted prior to taking the OTA's?

No, I got the OTA's before rooting. I turned it on and one was there. It rebooted and another was there right away.
Well I guess I'll find out when I get home if it loses root, which I assume can be restored again... rather, I hope :]
I guess next for me is recovery... seems like the UnLocker page has a nice write up, but I seen mixed reviews on Sprint tabs. I always have a certain degree of comfort when I'm able to backup/recover.
You given that any thought yet? Or you keeping it stock?
Honestly, the only reason I root is because of backup. I like being able to get a core level backup with Titanium and I like being able to restore all of my apps plus all their data on a new device. I've rooted every tablet I've owned (all three of them) but never tried to flash a new ROM or even considered it.

I hear that! My intentions for buying this was simply to modify it to run HC once Spacemoose gets a stable build up.

Have you seen this video/write-up from TheUnlocker?
I'm thinking I may give this a shot to get CWM recovery... debating if I want to chance screwing up my device on day 1 though :]
So after moving apps to the media area, the internal storage on my phone, most of the apps dissapeared. Other websites have talked about this, but I see nothing on XDA. Is this fixed by the leaked OTA?

Its the way the OS works...you dismount a drive and anything on that drive will no longer be available (disappear). This occurs when you plug into the PC and the phone unmounts storage so the PC can mount it. Force close your launcher or if possible, restart it (launcher pro gives this option) once the storage is unmounted from the PC and remounted to the phone.

Actually...I'm having the same problem. Even when the media area isn't mounted on the PC (I make sure it's mounted in Android). Doesn't bother me too much, because my apps don't take up much space. The strange part is that not all of the apps in the media area are disappearing, only some.

Same. Things will dissapear even though I never plug it into the computer. Other forums have said this is a common problem, I'll post a link when I'm experienced enough to
Has anyone installed the update, and can give a status report on this issue?
Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk
Haven't experienced this as an issue on any droid phone, but it's probably common because alot of ppl are plugging in their phones to their computers and thus losing access to apps on SD.
As with what tcrews advised, it's the way the Os works - If this persists simply restart your phone/launcher, could be a faulty SD card swapping out the card would help.
We have so much space to use on the apps partition as it is tho so i'd recommend moving any apps that install to sd/media back to the phone to reduce issues.

I appreciate the advice, but I'm afraid no one is getting at the real issue. Since the OP, I moved a dozen apps over to test and half have dissappeared. No computer, no mounting or remounting, just one restart.
Please, this post is about the update. From other forums I believe this is droid 3 specific, and I would like to know if this was fixed. I have a lot of apps.
Sent from my DROID3 using Tapatalk
After some research, I see the issue everyone else is getting at. My problem is not the launcher shortcuts or the app drawer. In settings > applications > manage applications, the app disappears, and all that is left is the namespace, which I assume is just a link to the data on the internal storage. But I need to redownload the app before it works.
Has anyone who flashed the update experienced this, not experienced?

I can still return my NT. It's clear that BN doesn't want one to root or sideload apps. Lots of the sideloaded apps don't behave properly and some menus are invisible. It's difficult to install non stock keyboards. Now with the latest OTA update we have to find a way to re-root and sideloading apps doesn't work anymore.
My question to the group is: If I get a Color, root it and load CM7, will that guarantee that on OTA update won't mess up anything? Do you have the same problem with apps not behaving right under CM7.
Thanks for your input.
If you load CM7 to the emmc, you will never receive an OTA update as you will no longer be running the B&N modified OS. You can always run CM7 from SD card and leave the stock B&N OS on the emmc. That way you can switch between running CM7 and the reader software (which, for reading I believe is superior). Just depends on what you want to do with it.
As far as application issues. You may run into an app or two there that doesn't behave well, but overall my experience is that most of everything that I've loaded on it runs without a problem.
Is it possible for an update to prevent the loading of CM7 from the SD card?
If I understand what you are saying, yes.
There are two popular methods to running CM7 on the NC.
1) Wiping the B&N OS and loading CM7 directly to the internal memory (emmc) and using the SD card as storage only.
2) Leaving the B&N OS on internal memory and having CM7 run directly off SD card (since the NC reads SD before internal memory). B&N updates will not interfere with CM7 on the SD card.
Either way is up to you. I can't say which way is more popular as there are a ton of users that do it each way.
If you want to review the methods, search for eyeballer's guide (load to emmc) or verygreen's guide (booting off SD) and choose which one is best for you.

I believe it's possible for BN to prevent you booting from SD card through an update, but I don't see why they would bother at this point. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
CM7 from SD card... BN update concerns
Thank goodness for this thread. I've been trying to figure a few things out since I read the news about the BN update yesterday.
My situation is this: I am getting a Nook Color (NC) for Christmas in a few days. I've already formatted a microSD card to run CM7 on it, but obviously I can't mess with it until I open it. It won't have the update when I take it out of the box, so I know i have time to do something if I need to. But what exactly is locked down on the NC with this update?
That is, if I'm dual-booting from the SD card, I'll still be able to install whatever apps I want on the Android side, yes? I just won't be able to load (or "sideload") those apps into the NookOS? I understand that this is a much worse deal for Nook Tablet owners, but it seems I just lucked out, yeah?
Thanks for reading! As you can see, I'm brand new to all this!

I suppose they would bother for the same reason they're trying to keep us (the NT people) from rooting and sideloading.

Yes. The B&N OS won't be rooted so you can't load anything outside their market, but you can install everything to the CM7 SD card. In fact I don't even think you'd have to register the nook or boot it into the B&N OS. You should be able to boot right from SD.

No, I'm pretty sure the Color is safe from any changes to the boot order. The very first steps of the boot process are in hardware and so are the configuration settings for which device it checks first for x-loader and the rest of the boot process. I think the only way to change that order is shorting out or adding resistors to certain pins on the system board
A short answer to make it clear.
No, if you run CM7 from SD or any other way, then B&N cant do anything against it as the boot order is set into stone by the hardware.
Thats the main reason why the NC can still compete so well against its bigger brother.

It's quite clear from the responses that the NC is preferable as an Android tablet over the NT. I'm inclined to switch, however is the NC hardware adequate? Is the screen and speed acceptable compared to the NT. Will I have a "real" tablet but be disappointed in the performance?
Do Netflix movies appear acceptable?
Lower your expectation, then.
What you intend to use "this tablet" for? Heavily watching video? streaming movies? playing games?... If that's the case, I think you need a better hw spec.
Although not dual core by the time a Nook Color is overclocked and running an optimized CM7 it gives a pretty good experience in my opinion.
Pretty smooth navigation and no problem with standard definition movies or regular games.
Anyone actually upgraded to 1.4.1 and tested SD boot
If we can net this out even further.... Has anyone actually upgraded their Nook Color to the new version (1.4.1?) and verified that they can still boot from their SD card?
I agree with the opinions that it is in hardware and BN's upgrade should not have any effect, but I'd like to know if someone has actually done it and can confirm the SD card boot still works OK after the upgrade.
Thanks!!!!
If you need power for the same / less money of a NC get a Novo 7 Advanced.
It runs everything from 2.3 to 4.0 and has a 1.0 ghz dual core, dual cams, mic, etc.
However its 800x480 resolution only, if you dont mind you might just get that one.

Can you side-load any app that not offered by B&N on your NC running v1.4.1?
I have my NC running 1.4.1 rooted, and am able to sideload apps at will (within the memory limitations of 1.4.1). I did run the fix to (hopefully) prevent further B&N OTA updates, so I expect it to stay this way for a while. I also dual-boot to CM on SD card.
I have Baseband G900AUCU2ANG3
Rom is 4.4.2
Build number KOT49H.G900AUCU2ANG3
It is a rooted SM-G900A with safestrap installed and working.
Heres my problem. I am having problems with writing to my External SD card. I used app2sd to move only the apps that are specified in the app manager as moovable, and had success.
But I used SDfix for correcting the r/w of the sd with limited success. Though most pics moved successfully, lately, when I move them, some "break". Also, I have around 20 movies on the SD working, but, also lately, when I move newly downloaded movies, sometimes I have success. Other times the video only party transfers or breaks completely. The wierd thing is that the same video can do all three things. Break sometimes, partially move, and in some cases successful transfer. I have checked the permissions of everything and it seems to check out. I have busy box pro and rom toolbox pro installed also, but even using rom toolbox i have the same problem. I have even tried my pc, but when I put the SD back in my phone, same thing. I also noticed that some items successful moved will be either broken later or just gone. This includes photos, movies, saved PC programs and more. Can anyone help me figure this out. Ive tried and checked everything I can think if.
Good morning everyone. I have been on these forums for awhile but couldn't remember my username.
Anyway, I have a Note 9 and yesterday was Christmas of course. I had recorded a video of my son opening his presents. He got a hold of the phone and deleted the video by accidentally. There is no backup of it. Phone is newer and backup wasn't set up yet.
Is there ANY way of recovering the deleted video? I have tried DiscDigger but it requires Root to recover deleted videos. And with my understanding there is no root for the Note 9? All help is appreciated as I feel terrible that we didn't take any pictures of him opening and now the only video is gone.
Thank you!
o6blin,
You are correct, there is no root & your video is gone.
Try to recapture that moment by giving him another package to open.
There is alot we cant do yet because of permissions.
Trust me, there are a ton of things that I can't do because of permissions.
Root would be perfect and we would be able to do what we want to do & how we want to do it without any resistance from the manufactures.
If root was discovered or released, this would be much of a better community with so much involvement from developers, app makers, theme bakers & such.
o6blin you are better off with a pure android so that you will never be in a situation as such or use the screen lock.
Regards,
There are programs that say they recover, ranging from $30-$59, videos without root. I've found a few, not many, people that say they work but not a convincing amount. I'm willing to spend that on memories. Any input?
Thanks for your help.

if it on ext sd yeah probably very easy to do.( just put sd card and a card reader and plug in a pc and use Recuva software)
if video was on internal storage, good luck.
btw stop using the camera or writing data because the more you wait the less chances of recovery is possible.
be careful that you aren't paying 50$ for someone to steal your phone.( they will probably ask you to send the phone and give your credentials or something.)
It was in internal storage yes. I've stopped using the phone for pictures and believe I found the video in the my files/cache but it is unopenable.
I know it's too late for this video, but I would send all pics and video to external SD card and turn on Google Photos backup settings.
can it be read by some recovering programs on pc when connecting yr phone to the pc ?

Try and download ES file explorer and it will give access to recycle bin, as long as you turn recycle bin on.

If you haven't written anything new onto your device yet. There is still a chance that you can recover that video. You would have to connect your device to a computer and run data recovery software on it. However if you have used your device since you have deleted your video. There is a chance that you won't be able to recover it as you may have partially or full written over the sections of the internal storage space it was stored on.
This is the exact reason why I always install dumpster on all my phones.
Check the play store an install it ... most likely u have lost the video but all other deleted will be saved in dumpster.

Give Samsung stars a call. I spoke to them a while back fixing a problem and he said he had helped another customer recover some photos that they had deleted by accident. Is worth a try
Possibly..
Connect your phone to a pc and allow data transfer. The phone now shows up in the explorer as mass storage. Maybe a recovery tool is able to recover some photos from the storage. Hope this works.
If you are a pie beta tester there is a recycle bin feature in the gallery app.
