I have a Nexus 6 with a lot of mods: unlocked, rooted, decrypted, twrp installed, franco-kernel, double-tap to wake and xposed. I'd like to upgrade my phone to 5.1 but with all these mods, which is the best solution? Waiting for a flashable 5.1 zip?
I don't want to lose all my settings and saves. And since in a future i'd like to update to a new android version, I ask to understand how you (nexus users) usually do upgrades with mods inside..

You can either wait it out to not lose anything, or you can lose your mods and update, that's about it, that's why I usually stay pretty stock and if I ever want to upgrade, I'm not really losing anything worth having

Ask yourself what's going to change in your life if you go to 5.1 today? Some people do have good reasons.
I am waiting a few days myself as my phone runs perfectly fine.

i have the exact same question as well lol and have no idea what to do next...
i am rooted, bootloader unlocked, with twrp and decrypted
i guess i will have to flash a 5.1 rom and bootloader/kernel/radio??
I believe you leave out the kernel as that is what allows you to have a decrypted device.
My advice - wait until there is a decrypted 5.1 zip and flash that.
Personally, I use a new version of Android as a reason to wipe and start fresh. Look at all the bootlooping and junk that's happening to people right now who are quick to want to update. I doubt Xposed works on 5.1 as well.
No it doesn't

So I've been rooted on my ATT GN3 for awhile now and I have a custom ROM(UrDroid stock 4.3) installed using Safestrap.
For the last several weeks, periodically when I'm on wifi, I get a prompt that there is an OTA update. I can't decline it and it reboots the phone into recovery mode. I just choose to reboot again and it says the update did not complete.
I'm worried about loosing my root or worse. What do I need to do?
You can freeze the system app called "at&t software update".
Yeah, I could do that. But I would like to keep my phone updated if possible. Maybe it's better to wait for the official release of KitKat?
I would still like to get familiar with the process of updating while rooted though.
The irony in this is killing me...
If you update, you will lose root, but can just as easily get it back. And that is if the update even Installs with you rooted. It will normally fail. And since it is a custom ROM you should not even be getting a notification.
What bothers me is that you say you want to keep the phone updated, but continue to cancel the update.
I suggest you use a custom KK ROM. It is the most up to date.
Be it KnoxRaid based off of the leak for our device, or one of the few ported ROMs we have available.

I guess I should explain that I'm still very new to the Android platform, having been a long time iPhone user. I've managed to figured out how to get my GN3 rooted and even install a custom ROM, but there are many things I still am unclear about on this platform.
Jailbreaking the iOS was relatively simple and straightforward. New iOS version comes out, wait for jailbreak, backup phone in iTunes and other apps like PKGBackup. Run jailbreak utility and restore everything the way it was.
Maybe I'm not quite understanding the process, but it seems hard to find direct step-by-step instructions for what I want to do. Maybe it's because there are so many different devices and ROMs, etc.
I don't want to lose all the apps/settings for my phone if I don't have to. I just don't know the best course of action to take in order to ensure that I am able to keep my phone updated and then rooted without losing everything.
I would also recommend the Knoxraid ROM. It's a great ROM and Drakey is constantly updating it. As of version 5.5 released today it's based on the latest OTA update. There is a step by step guide in the Knoxraid post that explains how to do everything. Take a look. It is pretty easy really.
As for backing up, you can backup all your apps/app data pretty easily with Titanium Backup. If you haven't already give it a look. There are tons of guides and how-to's available for how to use it. I know how overwhelming switching from iOS to android can be at first, but once you get the hang of things you will be so glad you switched. Good luck!
So I've recently unlocked the bootloader thanks to SunShine. I previously froze the Moto updater app in Titanium so as not to continually receive prompts to upgrade. Since I'm not unlocked, rooted and have TWRP running.. Would it be worth my time to upgrade to 4.4.4?
1. What are the benefits or drawbacks of upgrading or is it so minor I'm barely going to notice a difference?
2. I don't want to screw anything up. I want my Xposed apps and everything I have now running great.
3. If I do upgrade is it difficult to re-root (assuming I will indeed lose root) or is it as simple as reinstalling SuperSU?
4. Is "okay Google Now" any faster? I'd use it more if it wasn't so incredibly slow.
5. I assume there will be no data wipe if I upgrade, correct?
6. Is it even worth it to upgrade? Better cell service? Faster or slower os?
Side Question: Can anybody recommend good WiFi Hotspot app now that I'm unlocked and rooted?
Sent from my Moto X
You can upgrade and flash custom recovery and root on any Android version now.
Will 4.4.4 change much? No. But there's no reason not to. You may need it for future X feature updates perhaps. Not sure.
Supposedly 4.4.4 lowered Android O/S battery usage, though my wifes 4.4.2 is fine... So again, up to you.
I don't see how updating will hurt anyway. But... Once you do, there's no going back.
Also on 4.4.2 AT&T unlocked through Chinese, have been planning to update to 4.4.4 now that it's rolled out to AT&T, mostly to see if the supposed camera improvements are better, and though I don't use the video recorder, I like that they added the pause (I was surprised when I couldn't find it)
I believe I just need to uninstall xposed, unfreeze any system apps, flash stock recovery, take the update, and reinstall TWRP
On the G900A shipped from AT&T we have a locked bootloader, and there is no known existing workaround to unlock it correct?
So given that, root was achieved , then safestrap was developed so we can currently flash roms that use the stock bootloader and kernel image, however we can customize the OS as long as the kernel and loader are untouched.
If the bootloader stays locked, what is known regarding safestrap and lollipop?
Can we still rollback the stock kernel to achieve root, then roll forward and keep it?
If that is the case, then when the stock AT&T lollipop is released, some level of ROM development can occur?
I am confused somewhat by all the discussions surrounding this, and didn't see any threads to discuss it specifically.

No, if you update to lollipop then your ability to have a rooted phone will be lost. The bootloader hasnt changed since the phone was released which is the reason we have been able to rollback the rom. This was a loophole in the original firmware of the s5. When lollipop comes out then it will be a completely different bootloader and will be locked and you will not be able to roll back to kk bootloader. The loophole for this has been patched and there probably wont be another way to root the phone after lollipop considering the guy that found the loophole is now working for googles security team. Bottom line is if you want root then you cant have lollipop.

Thanks to chainfire the chances of updating to 5.0 while keeping root seems more doable at this point.
However, based on recent samsung updates for other devices, safestrap may stop functioning after the update as it continues its slow death.
Once again, if having root access is important to you, do no not take the 5.0 update when released until some of us have a chance to evaluate it.
Since I am running dynamic Kat on stock slot right now, I should be safe from updates for now right?
Waiting to see what happens with all this. I did back up my stock rom to an SD card, so I can restore and unroot etc... to get an update if I choose to later.

Not necessarily, just because (if) the S5 gets 5.0 does not mean the ability to root will be lost just go check out the Verizon S5 forums you'll see they have a method for rooting with 5.0 that in theory should work for us as well. again it is recomended to remain on a 4.4.x rom until this has been fully evaluated.

My suggestion would be not to take any updates until the root capabilities have been evaluated.
As always, research goes a long way towards alleviating fears and stopping panic attacks before they happen. be patient there are great devs here give them time to work
Well, I stopped using the S5 and switched to a oneplus one, happily running CM12 nightlies now
the att gs5 doesn't seem like it's getting any updates..

How are you liking it? I'm seriously thinking about doing the same thing.
I have a coworker that just got the Lollipop update for his Note 3 so that means it will be coming to the S5 very soon!
There is a pre-rooted lollipop update on droid views "http://www.droidviews.com/install-rooted-lollipop-on-att-galaxy-s5-sm-g900a/" . I have updated already and it runs smoothly. The only thing is after you run the update it can take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes to reboot so just hang tight.

I used that method as well. Sure, it worked for me, but I came from Dynamic Kat, a well debloated stock rom. Due to this, after installing the update using this method, the built-in apps restore function could not complete due to having all of the useless bloatware back, taking up the extra space I was free to use in Dynamic Kat. Even removing the apps that are safe to remove via Titanium Backup doesn't help because the space is reserved for them. I've also already moved every app that it will allow to move to SD card. I've removed unneeded apps. I've gone through my internal storage to remove any unneeded files.
I've removed most of the apps listed here
This doesn't give me the Bluetooth tether that I used to us for my Gear 1(Running Null Rom). I'd look for an app to cover this but... I can't install anything because I've got no space to do so... I hope a good debloat method comes along soon. I still have root, so I'm hopeful.
Yea, bloatware is ridiculous for this phone. Have you tried the Alliance rom, that is what I run and it's not to bad for bloatware but I have only managed to get 5.6 running. Going to try version 8 today sometime. If you like to customize that is an awesome rom.
Hi folks, new to the S5 forums on here as I just upgraded from my trusty S3 on AT&T. I'm still on the stock 4.4.2 firmware, NG3 build, and I'm wondering if I should just root from here using TowelRoot method or take the 4.4.4 OTA and root from there.
Root your 4.4.2, then use the update while saving root to lollipop and skip 4.4.4 all together.

You gotta downgrade theres a post on here just type it in the search bar. Pretty easy process
Yes. Follow the 4.4.2 how to root thread, it says that bit still works.
OK thanks a bunch. Getting ready to do that now.

Well that was quite easy and I'm a happy camper now! Just had to flash nd3 kernel with odin in order for TR to work then flash my ng3 kernel. So nice to be able to use TiBu. Helium wouldnt install all my apps. Now I can start freezing and uninstalling all the bloatware!
So I just got my Z3C and have been happily loading my apps when I read that rooting wipes the device and I might be wasting my time. Is it still the case that you need to use the exploit to root?
I had to pretty much re-root and do the whole shibang shibang again. Not only that, but I've also been struggling to get xposed to work on 5.1.1. Didn't have any trouble getting it to work on 5.0.2. So far, it seems like most people are getting xposed to work by using an older zip, which has been annoying to track down. It's a v67 version of xposed, but it's a specific one. Also, had to flash an additional zip just to get the notification bar to align correctly, and there's some additional new bloat.
Won't lie. Was pretty happy with 5.0.2., and it's taking me quite some time to get my phone back to how customized I had it in 5.1.1

This is your best bet to find out exactly what Xposed version you need for your Rom and for your phone. You will have 5.1.1 working better than ever in a couple steps. Hope it helps.

To answer your question - you only TRULY have to wipe your device when changing from KK to LP or vice-versa; however, everything just works better when you wipe. During the rooting process, I believe you'll have to downgrade to an old KK firmware, then once you've obtained root, you'll have to install a pre-rooted 5.1.1 LP firmware. At that point, you can choose to either wipe or not.
Hello,
I am newer to the Android world. I recently made the switch from Apple / iPhone / ios. I traded in my iPhone 6 @sprint for a Nexus 6 and sold my Apple TV and got a Nexus Player. I have no regrets and have not looked back since! I am currently running my Nexus 6 / Nexus Player bone stock on Marshmallow 6.0 (MRA58K).
I am looking for a smooth method to lock and unlock the bootloader on my Nexus 6 without it wiping my phone every time. Also, what is the best root method for a Nexus 6 on Android 6.0?
Thank you in advance!

when you unlock your bootloader, itll wipe your whole phone, nothing that you can do about that. and the root method.. its the only true method, and best. it involves unlocking the bootloader, then fastboot flashing twrp recovery, then flashing SuperSU via twrp recovery. and that it. then you boot up with root. every nexus is done this way. takes about 3-5 minutes.
I see. Is the method for the Nexus Player the same?

i dont have one, but it should be exactly the same. every nexus device is rooted the same way. but, just so you know, on marshmallow, you will also need to flash a custom kernel in order to get root. so youll need to flash a custom kernel then supersu in twrp recovery to get root on marshmellow.
I mainly went for the Nexus 6 for the display size and stock Android experience. I know Nexus devices are the "king of root" but I think I'm just going to leave mine be. Just run stock 6.0 with the bootloader locked and unrooted. I really want to utilize Android pay anyways.

well, i have one suggestion, you should at least unlock your bootloader. in android now, you need to enable unlocking in a setting. if, for some reason, you get caught in a bootloop, and dont have your bootloader unlocked, you wont be able to unlock it to reflash a factory image. it will just become a doorstop.
