Yes there's a ton of information you're missing I would suggest to use the Search button and read and read then read some more.
The question you've asked has been thoroughly discussed over and over for months.
This is a good thread to start

I updated to 33 and now I'm stuck with no protected apps and I can't flash 91 or any other version. 33 is like my body is covered in mosquito bites, its awful Ill do anything to get back to froyo, even unlock the bootloader. Has anybody rooted 33? Thanks
Yes,you can,but ONLY if you unlock the bootloader,no other way at this moment at last.Take a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=772591 ,and also you can search a little, many posts with the same problem.
Cheers

Profit!
thanks, i was on my phone so i could only search google which didnt help:
http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1GGLS_enUS349US349&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=root+frg+33&qscrl=1
Ive been monitoring and posting on the 2 xda threads related to 33 but the one that mentioned rooting said use superboot frf91, i googled it and found it on androidforums, but i couldnt find the tools it said were required plus at the top it said it was to root frf 91 and i didnt want to forge ahead and mess anything up, i decided to ask some more questions first.
when i started the superboot frf91 thread in androidforums, the first instruction had me download the proper "tools", the link went to modaco.com, which is pretty daunting in the amount of information that bombards the user. Not sure what to do really. I selected "android" and it took me to a news page, something about cancer funding , samsung latest, etc. Then I searched "superboot frf 91" and received no results. I am trying but i found modaco.com to be quite off-putting...
Can i just choose any rooting method or will only certain ones work with 33? thanks
Ok, so if you had read the last few pages of the link to the thread I gave you (hell, you posted in them, so I hope you have read them)
There is a general consensus that you can either
a) Unlock you bootloader
b) Wait...

Im sorry why did you type "unlock your bootloader or wait"?
Above your post I asked "has anyone successfully rooted 33?" See, I rushed into flashing 33 and it got me onto trouble so I'm being more careful with this. My concern is that, afaik, nobody has unlocked their bootloader while on 33, so I'm just trying to obtain confirmation about which method works (if any). One person said use superboot 91, but as I indicated I had a few hangups after trying that so I'm simply inquiring further to see what if any method somebody has had success with.
You're telling me the new hboot has disabled 'fastboot oem-unlock'? lol

There are several how to videos you can find. Look for one click root if you only want to root. It is about as easy as you get. It was created by TGA Gunman. Or you can search for the Clockworkmod update.zip and place that in the root of your SD card. Then you would be able to install a Rom without actually needing to root your phone first.
Also please make sure to post questions in the proper section. You will have the wolves after you for posting a general question in dev

captivates are difficult to brick, but not impossible
I want to use a tmobile SIM on the captivate but it asks me for a code. How do I get one? I searched up guides on how to unlock it but all of them seem outdated. I upgraded from 2.2 to 2.3.5 to CM11 4.4.2 latest snapshot and rooted. I've tried the sgs unlock tool on the play store but doesn't work. Help would be appreciated, thanks.

Did you see this? http://www.xda-developers.com/android/galaxy-s-sim-unlock-without-code/
I have almost the exact same question, except I mistakenly sold my phone before doing the unlocking. Now the guy I sold it to needs to get it working on a nonAT&T network. He has a sim card.
Can anyone confirm a way to get CM11 (nightly in late July) unlocked? I don't have to revert him to stock 2.1 to unlock do I? From what I read, I don't want this guy to keep trying, as it may become unlockable after a five or so different attempts. Is this still true?
Obviously, I'd prefer free. This guy is seriously unhelpful with providing his comfort level or understanding of root/brick/unlock, etc.
e-unlocker.com is one site I found. Is this legit?

There's a few way, gotta look around the forum to find it.
You'll have to be on stock firmware though, Froyo I believe (2.2) but GB (2.3) might work. The guide should mention it.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm not sure if he's capable of reverting to stock 2.2...
Is requesting an unlock code from AT&T a no go? I talked with a rep and she seemed to think it was do-able. I'm still current and paid up with Att so that isn't a problem. I need the IMEI, but no need to waste time on that if it doesnt' work.
I currently use another phone with ATT.
thanks

It should work with the unlock code. I haven't unlocked a Cappy in a very long time so I'm not sure if it needs the stock dialer. That being said, if he gets the pop-up box to enter the code, it should work.
I have just ordered an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S4 Active SGH-I537 that I am going to have activated with MetroPCS. From the model number, this apparently was an AT&T phone. I have found rooting instructions that I don't completely understand yet. My question is, if this is flashed to MetroPCS, would I still use the instructions for an AT&T phone? If so, are there any accurate instructions that you can tell me about? A video would be perfect. Also, would I want to turn off automatic software updates? Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I am trying to learn.

The only thing you have to do is go to towelroot.com. The instructions you found are outdated.

So all I have to do it go to that site on the phone, download it, and run it, and that's it?

Yes it's an app, you just have to run the app, follow the instructions, afterwords install SuperSU from the play store. It couldn't be any easier.
