Hi, i'm planning to buy a Moto X 1st gen (2013), but i'm confused about the different models and which will be better or has best LTE band support.
I see some XT1053 advertise as Developer Editions GSM unlocked and also some XT1060 advertise too as Developer Edition unlocked, but sometimes I also see that are advertise as AT&T and/or Verizon versions.
As I'm planning to buy this phone in the US but not using there, are both of them gsm and bootloader unlocked? Which one of them is better? I need at least band 4 support (1700/2100); band 28 would be great, but i think none of these moto x support it.
Thanks in advance, hope my question is clear!

If I recall the XT1060 is made for VZW (CDMA with GSM LTE) while the XT1053 is made for networks such as AT&T and T-Mobile (GSM with GSM LTE).

Thanks for your response!
So despite being called gsm unlocked, the xt1060 will not work with any gsm carrier in the world? Or the xt1060 is in fact more complete and will work with all gsm's (like xt1053) plus some cdma carriers?
Thanks in advance!
I didn't realize you made a thread for this...
I'm going to post the replies I sent you via PM in case others are looking for this info too...
In the USA, the XT1053 was Sold as the GSM Developer Edition. In that configuration, you could only get it as 32gig, black face, woven white back and silver accents (buttons and ring around camera), and says Developer Edition on the back. Unlocking its bootloader doesn't void the warranty.
The XT1053 was also sold in the USA on the Moto Maker site as "GSM Unlocked (ships with T-Mobile sim)" and later "GSM Unlocked (ships with NET10 sim)". These two XT1053's were available with all Moto Maker options (for front, back, and accent colors, and different memory sizes). While you could bootloader unlock via the Moto web site, since they were NOT labeled "Developer Edition, it voided the warranty.
All of the XT1053 variants were SIM Unlocked (aka Carrier Unlocked), and support the exact same frequencies.
When it comes to the XT1060 there were made for Verizon USA.
There was the Developer Edition for Verizon (XT1060). As a Developer Edition, it too was only available as 32gig, black face, woven white back and silver accents (buttons and ring around camera), and says Developer Edition on the back. Unlocking its bootloader doesn't void the warranty.
The Retail and Moto Maker variants of the XT1060 for Verizon USA were available with all Moto Maker options (for front, back, and accent colors, and different memory sizes). They are NOT bootloader unlockable (moto never gave out the codes for these).
Again, All the XT1060 variants (Dev Edition or MotoMaker or Retail) were SIM unlocked, and supported the same frequencies.
Since Verizon uses CDMA/EVDO for its voice and 2G/3G data services, the XT1060 does include CDMA support, however its geared towards Verizon USA's network. You can't use the XT1060 on Sprint's CDMA network for example.
When it initially shipped, the only LTE Band the Verizon XT1060 variants supported was Band 13. Band 4 support was added to the XT1060 in the Android 4.4 update. This lead to the confusion as some web sites never got updated to reflect Band 4 being added.
As for what frequencies do the XT1053 and XT1060 support, see -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moto_X_(1st_generation)#Variants as it is now correct.
You will see that when it comes to GSM/UMTS/HSPA bands, the XT1053 and XT1060 support the "standard 4" (850/900/1900/2100) so if your carrier uses those for 2G, 3G or non-LTE 4G, you'll be fine with either. The XT1053 also supports GSM/UMTS/HSPA on AWS (1700/2100Mhz) which is used by T-Mobile USA.
When it comes to LTE, the XT1060 supports Band 4 and 13 (with 4.4 and up). The XT1053 supports Band 2, 4 and 17.
If your carrier isn't compatible with Verizon's CDMA, and/or uses GSM/UMTS/HSPA, I would recommend you get the XT1053 for the following reasons...
The XT1053 is intended to be used with GSM out of the box, and has an easier time being used on "any carrier". To use the XT1060 on a GSM carrier, you need to force its radio to GSM and the Verizon firmware will always tell you its a "non-verizon sim" inserted in the phone.
The XT1053 will get its Over The Updates (like Lollipop) no matter what carrier its on where as the XT1060 will likely need to be manually upgraded if you are not using it on Verizon's network.
Any variant of the XT1053 can have its bootloader easily unlocked (by requesting the code from Moto's web site). To unlock the bootloader on the XT1060, you must ensure you get an authentic "Developer Edition For Verizon (XT1060)"
both support LTE Band 4, neither support LTE band 28
The XT1060's are the same. Dev Edition vs Retail/Moto Maker is really only about 1. Does moto give out the bootloader unlock code (Dev=Yes, All others=No), and can you customize it when you purchase it (MotoMaker=Yes, others = No). All XT1060's use the exact same Roms.
The XT1053's are the same. Dev Edition vs Moto Maker is really only about 1. Does unlocking the bootloader void the warranty (Dev=No, All others=Yes), and can you customize it when you purchase it (MotoMaker=Yes, Dev Edition = No). All XT1053's use the exact same Roms.
Yeah, even if the price is higher, the XT1053 is likely going to perform better for you. See if you can get a non-Dev Edition XT1053 cheaper, because that will work exactly the the same as the Dev Edition XT1053. Unlocking the bootloader voids the warranty on the non-dev edition, but since you'll be out of the USA with it, the warranty probably wont matter.
I know this thread is a bit old, but I have an xt1053 (t-mobile version). Will this work on Verizon for calls and data?

Read more closely, your answer is above. Verizon uses CDMA, the 1053 does not have CDMA bands.

I replaced the fried rear camera in my XT1053 with a part from an eBay seller called bonfireradios. The camera was used but it works great and takes excellent pictures. I checked and they currently have a power / volume flex cable for $6 total. It's the same part for all versions of the 1st gen Moto X. Hope this helps.
On a side note, If you cracked the edges of your battery cover like I did while taking the phone apart, I know of a another eBay seller that sells brand new OEM white "crosshatch" battery covers that match the Dev Edition perfectly, with the exception of the "Developer Edition" engraving.

Are there any differences between the Tmo and Dev Ed?
Will the Tmo work on AT&T's nework and get LTE?
If there is no difference I'd be tempted to go with Tmo's so I could motomaker mine.

No difference, same model. I'm using t-mobile motomaker on at&t with LTE just fine. Just don't let them change the IMEI on their system if you get a new sim card. Tell them to leave whatever was on there, or you'll get a plan without LTE. This applies to dev edition as well.
There are many discussions and many answers to this question. The answer I saw the most was to get a T-Mobile version for use on T-Mobile. The reason is the T-Mobile version supports a particular band for HPSA+ that other versions don't support. If your not in an LTE area, you will fall back to EDGE if your phone does not support the HSPA band needed. I can't confirm, only passing on what I read. I bought the T-Mobile version.
It appears as if you intend to use it on AT&T so it might make no difference. Why can't you use Motomaker on AT&T? Have they discontinued it?

Thanks. Understood that your not confirming but reporting what you've observed. The reason why I would choose T-Mobile and use on AT&T is simply because I want the freedom and flexibility to move between different GSM carriers and their MVNOs just like I am able to do on my Nexus 4.
If the T-Mobile version works on a particular HSPA+ band that the Dev Ed does not, yet has all the other bands that the Dev Ed has, then that would make the T-Mobile phones a better and more flexible phone imo. People who need to root or unlock would feel differently since they have different priorities.
I really want to be able to use T-Mobile since they have the best monthly pricing (especially a family of four) and I love how they have shaken up the market, but T-Mobile indoor building penetration is so poor at my current residence that I really need to go with Straight Talk or Net10 with an AT&T sim, yet if I move or the coverage improves I would switch to T-Mobile.
Does T-Mobile have to giver you a code to get your phone to work on AT&T and its MVNO's?

Does the t-mobile Moto X allow you to tether on AT&T without restriction?
I'm planning on ordering up a MotoX here shortly and have been wondering about the DE vs Tmo question too. After a LOT of google searches it seems they are the same phone with the Tmo version supporting extra bands. According to this article there is NO carrier branding or bloatware on the the Tmo version. The article also states that the Tmo Moto X comes sim unlocked with an unlockable bootloader via Motorola's unlock program. Given this, I cant understand why anyone would order the DE and not take advantage of the Motomaker customization.
There is NO difference at all. Same bands, same internals, same everything. The DE is more expensive because it's the 32GB model. The tmo one IS sim unlocked (some people don't believe that), and has an unlockable bootloader. Doesn't have a carrier logo stamped on the back either.
As for T-Mobile USA vs Dev edition.. From what I know, they support the same bands and both are SIM Unlocked. While both allow you to unlock their boot loader, doing so on the T-Mobile USA device will void its warranty where as unlocking the boot loader on the Dev Edition does not. That is why some would order the Dev Edition rather than a 32gig T-Mobile version.
As for T-Mobile vs ATT versions...
Two relevant quotes from John Renaldi of Moto here -> https://plus.google.com/114874428605785658638/posts/fkFtiVpXyHi
"TMO version will not have all the same LTE banding as the AT&T version. HSPA bands fine though."
"While the TMO version does in fact have all the AT&T LTE bands (your AT&T SIM will work), the hardware itself does not contain all the same bands as the AT&T version. Our TMO version supports: LTE Band 02; LTE Band 04; LTE Band 17 and the AT&T version supports LTE Band 02; LTE Band 04; LTE Band 05; LTE Band 07; LTE Band 17."
later in that discussion, someone else says... "the T-mobile and Dev variants have the same LTE bands (B17/B4/B2), so they'll be equal. On AT&T (in the US), they'll both do just as well as the AT&T variant. Bands 5 and 7 aren't used by these operators in the US." So not having LTE Band 5 & 7 on the T-Mobile US X wont be a factor unless you are traveling to a non-USA country that uses Band 5 or 7 for LTE.
The T-Mobile can unlock the boot loader, where as the ATT variant can't.
Hello
I have almost the same question. I found an article to root the moto G and the moto X (http://www.elandroidelibre.com/2013...buffer&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Buffer) (sorry it's in spanish)...bla bla bla I found the same that I found here but when I read the comments someone logged as "el mostro cortes" said that he flashed the developer edition's GSM factory image to his motoX. That make me think if I can do the same.
I found the radio specs of my carrier here in Colombia:
TIGO
GSM: 1900MHz
UMTS/HSDPA: 1900MHz
After that I look the motoX DEV-E GSM radio specs and find:
Networks:
GSM/GPRS/EDGE - UMTS/HSPA + up to 42 Mbps - 4G LTE
2G/2.5G GSM/GPRS/EDGE bands
850/900/1800/1900 MHz
3G UMTS bands:
850/900/ AWS/1900/2100 MHz with HSPA+ up to 42 Mbps (B5/B8/B4/B2/B1)
4G LTE bands:
700/AWS/1900MHz (B17/B4/B2)
With this info, can some help me and tell me if can i flash the motoX DEV-E GSM to my phone?
I search in wikipedia and I found that the motoX DEV-E GSM is a X1053 model, and my motoX is a X1058, it's still posible?
Thanks a lot for your help!!!!!:good:
It can make your head spin, but from the thread it appears T-Mobile X and Dev Ed X are the same, but AT&T X has them beat with LTE Bands 5 & 7, but that's moot in US since 5 & 7 are used outside US.

I should add, from what I've gleaned from what people are reporting in this thread, is that the
1) T-Mobile X and Dev Ed X, have an HSPA+ band that the AT&T X does not.
2) Therefore, in the US, the T-Mobile X and Dev Ed X are fully functional on AT&T's network.
3) But AT&T's X will be lacking some HSPA+ capabilities on T-Mobile's network.
Again, I'm not confirming or asserting any of this as fact, but only trying to summarize as best I can what we have been discussing.

Are you absolutely sure about this? Do you know it for a fact, or have you just read it somewhere?
I contacted Motorola today, to verify that the t-mobile off-contract version indeed was sim-unlocked, but they replied that it WAS sim-locked, and also was carrying the t-mobile logo on the back.
I think it's really hard to figure out who to believe, since many are reporting that it comes sim-unlocked, but wouldn't Motorola be the one to know for sure?
I am going to buy a Moto X at Mondays sale, but haven't figured out if I should just go with the dev version, or try the t-mobile version, which may or may not be sim-locked.

Yes. I'm sure. As another use posted above me, the device has NO tmobile logos, and is Sim UNLOCKED. I've put an ATT sim inside and it works fine. Moto chat is useless, they don't know anything about their own products. Get the motomaker tmobile version unless you don't care about colors. Then get the dev edition because unlocking the bootloader doesn't void the warranty on that one.
Tmobile doesn't really sell this phone, moto does. Tmobile didn't touch it at all, it's the developer edition with 16gb of storage and without the "Developer Edition" engraving.

I wouldn't classify myself as a power user far from it. Meaning never/wouldn't

background, would there still be advantageous for me to buy the Dev Ed edition
SINCE it will BE THE SAME PRICE as the NON Dev Ed version (like maybe in resell

people...and what could it do for the avg Joes?
what ur final recommendation: which version should i buy?
Dev has higher resale value than a 32gb version.
Rooting is nice for a few simple changes, you might like it.
Unless you absolutely must have a certain color combination I would go with the dev ed even if you never unlock or root it.
You don't even have to root your device its great as is.

im going to repeat what has been said by me and others in the countless threads asking this same question....
The two developer edition moto X's come in black face, woven white back, with silver accents (buttons and ring around camera), and say Developer Edition on back. They only come as 32 gig. When it comes to unlocking the bootloader, you can get the code from moto for free, and it does not void your warranty. Once the bootloader is unlocked you can install 3rd party recovery, root, or install 3rd party roms (by 3rd party, I mean non-moto)
The retail x comes as black face, woven black back, and silver accents, or white face, woven white back, and silver accents. Moto Maker can be customized. These come as 32 or 16 gig.
I'm not going to go into the reasons why, but Moto does NOT give out the bootloader unlock code for the Retail and MotoMaker X for Verizon, ATT and a few other carriers.
When it comes to hardware, the GSM Developer Edition (XT1053) is the same as the T-Mobile or Carrier Unlocked/Unbranded (XT1053) and uses the same ROMs. The big difference is getting the unlock code from Moto for the non-dev edition voids the warranty. When it comes to the (CDMA) Developer Edition X for Verizon, they too are identical hardware, but as said, you can't get the unlock code from Moto unless you have the Dev Ed. (Note: for a brief period, there was a Chinses site selling the codes, but it was shut down and is not presently available. No one knows for sure if it ever will be again)
If they are the exact same price, get the dev edition so you can unlock the bootloader without voiding the warranty.
If you have ATT, know that their X is the XT1058, you can not get its bootloader unlock code from Moto. More importantly, by specs support supports 2 additional LTE bands (originally said to only be used outside the USA, but lately there has been talk that ATT is using one of them now), but does not support HSPA on AWS ( used by t-mobile for non-LTE 4g, but t-mobile has been reframing their 1900 from 2g to HSPA in some areas). So if you have AT&T but got the gsm dev, you'd be at risk starts fully using one or both of those LTE bands in the USA. In the future.
As for why unlock the bootloader, what would the average Joe gain by it? See -> http://mark.cdmaforums.com/MotoX-Locked.html

Thanks for any and all help!

Friend..the best way to do it, is to purchase an unbranded, no carrier Moto X from Motorola Website..then you can use whomever you wish..I'd suggest the Developer Edition..otherwise you'll probably have to purchase a "branded" model..
Tip: do everything in your power to purchase an "unbranded" unlockable device..
Here is a list of devices that can be unlocked..look in Moto X list..which can be unlocked..I don't see AT&T listed as unlockable..but they do offer the Moto X..but if I was to guess..I'd say theirs is also unlockable.. but verify this before a purchase..
But..if your budget doesn't allow for the price of a Moto XDEV..then certainly consider the new Moto G 4G LTE..the two are VERY similar is size, and the G will run right along side with the X..I have both..and a budget certainly will justify the new Moto G..and its not carrier branded, runs LTE blazing..consider the Moto G..I have one on AT&T..all my devices are now on AT&T..but of course, depends on your area, to which carrier..

I want to get a Moto X that would work if I decided to switch from T-Mobile to AT&T. My first preference is to buy it from Best Buy (I have some gift cards) but the guy at the store said if I bought a T-Mobile Moto X from them it wouldn't work if I switched to AT&T because it would be locked. From what I understand, T-Mobile can and will unlock this device for me if I ask them (nicely) meaning I could then use it with AT&T. Is my understanding correct?

I don't know that there is a "T-Mobile Branded" X, and I don't think T-Mobile sells the X directly (at least it isn't on their web site).
Your choice, is the GSM UNlocked (includes T-Mobile sim) from Moto Maker web site, or the GSM Developer Edition... why?
These are the only way to get a Moto X that supports HSPA/HSPA+ over AWS (1700mhz) that T-mobile uses. History or why is this a consideration: When T-mobile started rolling out their HSPA/HSPA+ network, they did so on AWS(1700mhz) and are the only carrier to do so. While they are re-farming their 1900mhz from EDGE to HSPA+ in many areas, that isn't complete, so if the phone doesn't support HSPA/HSPA+ on AWS, it will fall back to EDGE in those legacy areas which remain.
Now, what is the difference between the GSM Unlocked and GSM Dev Edition? Kind of simple...
The GSM Developer Edition comes only as 32gig with black face, woven white back, silver accents (buttons and camera ring), and says Developer Edition on the back.
The GSM Unlocked (includes T-Mobile SIM) on Moto Maker can be ordered as 16, 32, or 64gig, and the face, back and accents can be customized, along with other customization.
BOTH are SIM unlocked out of the box. Both can be bootloader unlocked, however doing so voids the warranty on the GSM Unlocked version but not the Dev Edition.
Both of these editions support the same GSM/EDGE/GPRS/HSPA/HSPA+/LTE bands and frequencies. In fact, they are the same "board' inside, use the same roms, etc. i.e. other than the look of the outside & customization options, and bootloader unlocking voiding vs not voiding the warranty, they are the same phone. (hence the GSM Dev Edition being the preferred choice so you can unlock the bootloader and easily root it without voiding the warranty).
If you are on T-Mobile today, you could buy the ATT version at no contract direct from Moto, BUT... you can't unlock the bootloader (moto doesn't give out the codes for ATT, Verizon, Republic wireless and a few others), ATT Wont sim unlock it (so you could use with T-Mobile) unless you are their customer for a certain period of time, and it doesn't support HSPA/HSPA+ on AWS. While the ATT X does support 2 extra LTE bands, those bands are not currently used in the USA.
Hope that makes sense.
Thanks for the responses! So let's say I were to order the GSM unlocked version (I'm not worried about voiding the warranty by unlocking the bootloader) with the T-Mobile SIM from motomaker and I used it on T-Mobile for a few months. If I were unhappy with the service from T-Mobile, would I be able to replace the T-Mobile SIM with an AT&T SIM and use it on AT&T's network?
P.S. I did take a look at the Moto G 4G and the Dev Edition but considering who is going to use this phone (my mom), my budget and the reviews the Moto X has gotten I decided that the X would be the best choice.

Yes, that is correct. The only caveat being that if ATT ever starts using those two extra LTE Bands (band 5 and 7) in the USA then the GSM Unlocked will have a slight disadvantage as it doesn't support them (hardware wise).

I bought the T-Mobile/GSM unlocked version from MotoMaker and it's working on my AT&T GoPhone plan no problem. I cut my micro-SIM down to nano and it works in the X just like it did in my Nexus 4. Interestingly I get better signal in many areas on LTE than my N4 got on HSPA+.

There has been lots of talk about the lack of a Dev Edition phone on VZW. I'm currently on ATT using the GSM Dev Edition phone and everything works well. Can anyone tell from the models listed for the Moto X 2014 whether there will be a Dev Edition version which will work well on ATT and support the LTE bands which ATT typically uses?
Yes the only one not receiving dev is Verizon as of now. Gsm is for sure! Don't know about Sprint

no need for sprint, sprint is friendly towards modding
There will be an unlocked version called "Pure Edition."
There seems to be some ambiguity on whether the Pure Edition is to be the same device as the Developer Edition or not, but in either case, VZW is not in the running for either for now.

Anyone know which model # the Dev/pure edition is? The sprint model seems to cover the most bands.

I think there is a bit of confusion on that at the moment. Here is what I understand - no dev edition, but pure is effectively the dev edition as it may be unlocked. Nothing is being released for Sprint. Moto has not published what bands are in what phone, but they are marketing pure for T-mo, so I sure hope it has bands 4 and 12.

I have been searching and searching daily to answer the question of what bands are supported by the Pure Edition and what the model number even is. It's either XT1092 or XT1095 and the reason I'm so concerned is that one does not have Band 12 - they're otherwise identical supposedly.
Anyway, just wanted to point out that I saw links to XT1095 on "America Movil" and a Motorola chat rep confirmed that the XT1095 is the Latin America version.
On the other hand, if the XT1092 bands are to be believed on Phone Arena and the likes, then the Pure Edition should support T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint as it appears to have CDMA/GMS/all LTE bands. I don't want to spread misinformation, so I'll just sit here and pray instead

Pure edition supports lte cat. 3? My only concern here
Hello,
i am thinking to buy moto x dev edition form ebay as it available for cheap.
the ebay page of seller says its verizon XT1060 dev edition but then he adds GSM unlocked, i know for a fact that verizon devices are CDMA not GSM. please help.
other question is will i be able to install any rom from the forum in XT1060 or there are limitations. i had some bad experience with my htc one s (i had gotten the C2 variant instead of the original one with S4 ) if anyone wants to have a look at the ebay page here is the link
and ghost is the code name of moto x right ?
The phone should say Dev Edition on the back cover. Verizon does use CDMA, but the phones are GSM capable for world use. Once you unlock the bootloader, yes you can install other ROMs, but you may lose some of the core Moto X features like active display and touchless controls that are only available via stock firmware.

Verizon's LTE phones are SIM Unlocked and can be used with 3G/4G/LTE SIMS from GSM carriers. For example, I can put my T-Mobile USA SIM into my XT1060 Dev Edition for Verizon phone, and get T-Mobile service.

The XT1060 does use CDMA, GSM and LTE radios. Its radio code or modem files are different from the other variants (like XT1053, XT1058,etc). So as long as the custom rom you are flashing doesn't include radios, OR tells you how to get your stock radios working, you should be fine.
The Verizon Dev Edition DOES have the verizon logo on the back too. In other words, that may be a "stock" dev edition photo, rather than the actual phone you're buying.
