[Q] D-Brand or Slickwraps - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This ought to get some folks' blood pumping. No, it is not my intent, I am not a troll. I just really want to know which one folks think is better. I have never used either one, I have only been exposed to these options from reading threads here in the N6 accessories forum.
I think they both have some nice looking products, but want to get a bit more feedback here about the products from users.
Thank you all in advance.

I'll be the 1st ta reply....Dbrand as well as slickwraps are freggin awesome! I have 3 skins from dbrand and 3 from slickwraps. The skins are made of vinyl and they look and feel as good as the pictures on there websites. The skins fit perfect there's no extra hanging around after you install them. Wjhat I really like about dbrand/slickwraps skins is if you want to reuse them you can just don't throw away the 3m paper that you're skins came off of. I change mine about every week or so. There's a trick to taking them off though. If you wanna change youre skin and put on a different skin.. take a hairdryer and a thin piece of plastic 'a guitar pick works good', take the hair dryer and hold it about 4 or 5 inches above the skin, just be careful not to get you're device to hot but hot enough to melt the glue on the back side of the skin. Then take the piece of plastic and start going around the edge of the nexus. Try to gently pull the skin as youre heating but be carefully because when u get to the nexus and camera cutouts you will rip the skin. After you have the skins removed from you're device put the skin back on the 3m paper then take the hair dryer and heat up the skin as you're heating rub out any creases in the skin. After you're done find a book and place you're old skin inside the book then set something with a little weight on the book. And when you're ready to switch back to the skin you removed it will be as good as new. You may have to heat up the old skin before reapplying.
If I were u I would order from dbrand and slickwraps. Hope this helped. Figured I'd throw a few pointers you're way in case you ever get some skins. I found out how to take them off the right way after I ripped the back skin....Getcha some!

They both have pros and Cons for me. I tend to stick with slick wraps myself though they're both really good in my opinion. I'd recommend trying both.

I just bought a "leather" skin for my Nexus 6 from slickwraps. The only reason I ordered slickwraps is because they provide side protection, which if I'm correct, dbrand does not. Other than that, I've seen dbrand skins before and they seem about the same to me. Very precise, both companies. I can post a pic of mine once I get home so you can compare with others. I've had it on a week now and it hasn't started peeling even though I take it in and out of a case; be careful of doing this though, it will start peeling depending on the type of case.
---------- Post added at 03:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:52 PM ----------
And one thing they both don't tell you (at least I didn't know), you should use a hairdryer to allow better adhesion on curves and corners. Heat allows the material to become soft and once it cools it doesn't lift! I used this method when applying decals on a PS4 controller with its curves

Thanks for the replies so far.

One thing I've noticed, slick wraps has real leather, cork, and bamboo backs in their natural line. I bought the leather, it feels very nice, like the moto 360 leather band almost.

Judging by the support I've seen Weston of Slickwraps give his customers here in the forums it is a no brainer. The wraps are slick (pun intended) as hell and look great.

My vote goes to the 1st one to offer glow in the dark.

Here is the leather skin from SlickWraps. It doesn't feel like leather though. Really smooth vinyl feel. In retrospect, if I knew it wasn't gonna feel like leather, I would've ordered the carbon fiber series.

I'd rate it a 7/10 just because the texture is not what I expected. As Dennis stated above, if you want a skin with leather texture, go with dBrand.
Edit: I misread... Dennis, the Slickwraps leather skin definitely does not have a leather feel, nor is it real leather. Just FYI.

Yeah I have their carbon fiber on my Nexus 5 and G3. Feels way better than the fake leather they're using.

Those are the vinyl wraps. Their natural series are real leather, wood, or cork (depending in what you get).

They defiantly are, if you pay attention and get the right ones. I have the natural brown leather on right now. I promise you it is leather as much as the Moto 360's watch band is leather.

And what you're referring to, natural series, they don't have the Nexus cutout, just for the dimple. To each their own. Not complaining it was just an opinion on what they call their "leather series".

The leather series, just like wood, carbon fiber, and metal, are still vinyl that's all I was saying, they will feel like vinyl. I prefer mine with no cut outs personally, but if your good with a xacto you can cut out the nexus logo.
I did not mean any disrespect it just seemed like you wanted real leather, but bought the 'wrong' type for that.

The Slickwrap NATURAL series leather is definitely real leather. Horween leather to be exact. The leather series (NOT THE NATURAL) "Provides look and texture of real leather" - It says it isn't real leather in the description.
So you need to read before you buy!

There was no disagreement that the "natural series" was not real leather. I didn't go for it because the lack of the cutout. I did read the description, I've ordered from them before, just not the leather series. I expected vinyl, but maybe a better vinyl that didn't feel like paper. My post was basically to show OP the detail of their wraps.

Agreed! Rereading my post I sounded like a ****. Sorry about that! The real leather ones are pretty amazing, I urge you to give it a shot. They have replacement backs in the works too, so you can do a "flush" mount of the skin so it feels like a factory install.

Add grip to the slippery gunmetal model

I love the metal finish and look but I've been using a clear case along with a glass screen protector since it's very slippery. I now want to use it naked but need to add some kind of grip, especially to the sides... Anyone has any ideas, like some kind of clear bumper or skin?
Thanks
Try a DBrand skin for more texture and grip. Slickwrap is another option.

use a skin from fireflex or dbrand or any other brand you like. select a grippy texture. make sure all sides are covered. that will do the trick

I wanna see and feel the metal finish, at least partially. Isn't there something transparent that I can apply on the sides or something?

I checked the brands you suggested and didn't find any clear skin. I found a seller from Romania called "X-Skinz" on eBay for 11 bucks but can't find any reviews about it anywhere. And his 97% rating is not inspiring there are cheaper yet on eBay but from China and those must be terrible.
Xtremeguard also has a full body clear skin but it dosent protect the sides.

It seems it does provide side parts. Not bad. Who knows how the quality will be. Never heard of it.
This should do the trick.
I have the carbon fiber skin on my Transformer. It's real nice and recommended. I've been thinking of getting this clear skin for my M8 one of these days. As you can see it does wrap around the sides. Should give you the grip your looking for.

That looks cool but yes, expensive. Give it a try and let us know.
I'm using the Dotview I got for Christmas right now. I was using this until then.
My Review of the Luvvitt Clearview htc One M8 Case
I go naked at home when I was using my Clearview. The novelty of the Dotview hasn't worn off yet.......it will though.
Regarding cases, I am currently using the Spigen Ultra Hybrid Clear case but the best looking clear case I used (at the same expense of less protection) is the Baseus Ultra Thin Clear TPU Case

But I really would like to try it naked, feel the metal and all that. When you think about it, what's the point of buying a metal body smartphone if your not feeling it? Problem is the lack of grip... If only the sides were textured, that's what I really wanted now
Weirdly, I've been thinking about this too. I ran naked for a few days and really liked it however it is insanely slippery!
I started searching for mobile "grips" as I wanted something I could "apply" to certain areas. For me its namely bottom right corner, bottom left corner as that's where contact is when I'm holding it one handed. However all I could really find either looked horrible or poor DIY jobs.
I wanted something transparent, low profile but has a slightly "grippy" texture.
I'm thinking about checking out DIY store for adhesive tapes etc. and seeing if anything is suitable. Other avenues might be worth exploring, those sticky back gel things used to apply to ornaments etc. to prevent scratching surfaces they're placed on. And the sticky back materials they use on the bottom of chair/table legs to prevent scratching wood flooring.
For me, even a small square of material which is super thin, transparent and otherwise unnoticeable on the rear bottom half of the handset would suffice for a decent grip.
What would be even better though, is a low profile bumper which lips around front and back adding grip around the edges.

Exactly. Or some kind of crystal clear bumper only, instead of the metal bumper I saw. That would be great. I have a friend who is a "McGuyver" kind of guy, I'm going to ask for his opinion on this subject also.
I think you're looking for more on the lines of a 'bumper' rather than a full 'skin' ?
Like the Poetic Borderline and FlexiFrame side bumpers...
But I doubt any of them made any for the M8 after disappointing interest with their M7 line.

Hey everyone, I'm here to introduce what I think is probably the slickest case/skin combo for the new S6 and S6 edge. I've been hearing a lot of hype around dbrand and their skins so I decided to preorder a white leather skin for my white s6 edge. A few weeks later, absolutely no regret. As a reviewer, I've tried a lot of skins from different companies throughout the years, and I have to say, dbrand is doing things right. The skin is cut out perfectly. It goes edge to edge on the back and because it's not cut out slightly off, like with a lot of other companies, installing it is a breeze. But we couldn't just stop there. There's not really much drop protection with just a skin. So I decided to throw on a Rearth Ringke Fusion case. 1 second later, mind = blown. The fit is actually much better with the skin than without, and seriously, this combo just looks so good and so clean, no more of the carrier logos and Samsung branding on the back.
White leather isn't the only option available btw, there's wood ones and carbon fiber ones as well which I think would look seriously nice with the case. Anyways, check it out!

Pics pics! I'm a big fan of dBrand
It looks really good and its nice to see a real world photo of what that combo looks like. The do their best to offer images that work, but it doesn't translate well enough to me on the screen to be comfortable going with it. But that combo allows me to get rid of the ugly ass AT&T logo.
Matte black dbrand ..... I'm using a flat black aluminum bumper with it and it looks amazing!
The rearth case has to be my fav that I've ever put on a phone. I hate cases, but this case is over the top. The dust covers built in are clutch.

If I go running, biking or hiking, I rather not expose the leather. When I give my son my phone, I rather not give bare leather. I can think of so many other reason, like camping or a day at six flags.
I like the bare leather for some tasks, but I also like to be able to sweat with my phone and in my experience leather doesn't hold up too well.
Best of both worlds?

That's basically how I do it.
If I'm the only one using it, no case.
If I'm working on my car or something, case.
If I plan on letting my daughter watch some stuff on it, case.
Don't like the cases with that back cut out.
I didn't really think of your reasons before but they make a lot of sense . I like patina but not so much oil stains or dark marks from grubby fingers!

OP which case do you like more? Did either of them scuff the leather when removed?

I have a Verus Verge, Neo hybrid and the Ringke Fusion, and they all have kept the leather perfect so far (less than a week). I do see the edges of the leather back getting "shined" after a while from removing the cases. It happens after repeatedly rubbing leather in the same spot. its inevitable I guess with or without cases.
I prefer the Ringke Fusion for my leather back G4. I like the leather look, and the clear case allows me to retain some of that look. My problem is that I will be changing out batteries soon (once I receive my 2 rebate battery kits) instead of charging, and case removal has me worried. I plan on buying more backs in the future if they ever become reasonably priced, but that may never happen.
To be honest I prefer the plastic back over the leather if I had to choose one. It seems more practical to me. It doesn't get finger prints and it just fits better. The initial leather appeal has worn off for me and the plastic back fits better on the phone especially around the camera and buttons. Good thing the backs are replaceable so we aren't stuck with our initial choices.
Good
I just got in my Ringke slim case and its amazing. Looks sturdy enough for small drops. My only gripe is its a finger magnet!
Picking up a G4 next week when its released in Canada. Got my ringke slim today for it.
I have used the slim on my Galaxy S5 and my S6. Best slim cases out there in my opinion.
I picked up the Ringke Slim. Don't really like it, though. It's Hell to get off, makes me feel like I'm going to damage my phone removing it. Also don't like that lack of a decent lip on it.
I'll stick with Cruzerlite. Always fits well, is durable, and doesn't attract fingerprints.
I got both today.

I have the clear case and am loving it. While i typically dislike cases, particularly with the leather back, this one looks nice and makes the phone feel much sturdier.
After a week I'm still loving this thin case. If it falls I have little faith it would survive. Better than nothing and it feels like it's a bare phone.

I would have gotten plastic also if I had realized the expense of the leather backs.

I also have the ringke slim case, I've had it for just over a week now and definitely enjoy using it.
I was afraid that it was too flimsy, or wouldn't fit correctly, but it fits really tight (kind of hard to peel off but I'd say that's a good thing.
I also put a metal plate so I can use my magnetic mount in my car, and it still fits fine with the metal plate on the back of the phone.
My favorite part about this case is the feel of it on the back when holding my phone. It has a nice matte soft touch and doesn't keep any fingerprints. It's easy to clean and is overall a minimalistic case.

Beautiful Protection (Slickwraps Natural Leather skin with Luphie aluminum bumper)

This is pretty much my favorite combo I have found for this phone so far. It is great. Looks and feels amazing and of course isn't going to add much bulk at all to the beautiful designed phone.
First there is the slickwraps leather skin. The leather is cut precisely and adds some much needed grip to the glass back of this phone as well as giving some great uniqueness to the design. It fits very well and smells great. I have the "distressed tan leather" on me me and it looks great with the white Note 5.
Next there is the aluminum frame by Luphie. I got mine in gold to complement the brown leather. I have to admit the combo looks really impressive. The bumper frame is good quality, especially for the pretty cheap price you can pay on eBay. The frame joins together by 2 small screws, and they give you 2 extra, along with a screwdriver in the package. The openings are precise and well placed. The only opening that gives a little trouble is the one for the s-pen. It is a little deep, so is a bit difficult to eject the pen. I find if I use my pinky finger's tip though that I can hit it just fine. The headphone opening and opening for the USB cable are ample enough, and work well with aftermarket cables. The case itself is lined with some stick on foam as well, which is good as it keeps it isolated from the frame of the phone itself. This both protects the phone, and reduces the risk of interference with reception. Speaking of reception on the phone with the frame on, I do seem to see some mild effect there, but I have not tested it directly yet for numbers. When I do I will update here.
Overall, I think this is an awesome combo and really does add some good protection to the phone without adding hardly and bulk at all. It makes the phone even look more premium and does not detract from the overall design at all, which is a great plus.
Any questions, let me know.

That would look cool with the Black bumper, and black leather skin on the Blue Note 5.
How thin is that bumper ? Does it feel like just a skin and a little wider bumper ? Or does it make it feel like a thicker case ? How's the grip ? Slippery, or comfy ?
Looks cool. I have the aluminum bumper, but i couldn't stick with because of the opening for S-Pen. even my fat pinky was too big for it....
Hopefully someone makes a better bumper soon

The bumper does add some width to the phone, but not much in the way of thickness. Grip is good with the bumper, and the addition of the leather back makes it really nice to hold.

Yeah, it is a tight fit. My pinky isn't too thick I guess so it is doable for me, but yeah, that is one opening that I wish they went a little wider on.

I used the luphie bumper for about two weeks but got sick of it mainly because it adds way too much width to the phone, not so much in thickness. Also I noticed it started to scratch the frame of the N5 slightly which really made me upset. Another problem I had was that when I hold the case with one hand I usually let my pinky finger hold the phone up while I use my thumb to navigate the screen and the edges on the bottom of the case are really sharp and uncomfortable. It does look cool though... Just wish a company like Element Case would make a bumper for the Note 5
Quick update on durability and protection of this. I had not meant to test this out of course, but the other night my Note 5 slide off a table onto a tile floor and landed smack down flat on its back. I froze. Picked up the phone. Slowly took off the frame and then peeled off the leather skin. Phew. No damage at all. It fell about 3 feet of so, and sounded God awful when it hit, but thankfully came through unscathed.

Yeah, the Rhino bumper looks pretty good, just curious how much bulk it may add to the edges.
Font is Caviar Dreams. One of my favorites.

That's my question as well, by looking at the video it looked a little bit on the hefty side. Hope that's not the case.

Looks nice, from the photos it seems that the camera does not protrude beyond the learher skin. It is really the case? Thanks

dbrand Skin Review

dbrand was kind enough to ship me some skins for review for both the Samsung Galaxy S7 and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge.
I figured I would post the reviews here on XDA to help the most people I could, here goes.
For the Samsung Galaxy S7 I have the Black Carbon Fiber skin, front and back, with accents.
For the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge I have the Blue Carbon Fiber with accents.
The skins arrived in simple plastic sleeves with a dbrand insert and the skin itself.
Once you open these the first thing you will notice is the skins have a texture.
The carbon fiber really looks and feels like carbon fiber.
The printing on these skins is second to none, they all look realistic.
The cutouts on the speaker grill, camera, and sensors are perfect.
The application of this skin is the easiest yet.
All you have to do is place the camera cover (accents) on.
Then just use the 3M paper to keep the entire skin from sticking as you align the camera cutouts.
Realign the paper sideways and align the bottom of the phone.
Remove the paper completely.
Finally use a hair dryer or heat gun to heat up the edges and press them into place.
I used a heat gun on the lowest setting, a hair dryer may take slightly longer.
Just in case you do not believe how easy the install is, I have made a video of me installing one.
Remember I have no extra experience doing this, it is this easy.
Installation video.
Once installed you will really see how perfect dbrand made these skins.
Every cutout and edge will be exactly where it should be.
There are no overlapped places or short edges.
I have used both Skickwraps and dbrand and in my opinion dbrand has done a much better job with their skins.
If anyone is considering skins, dbrand is the way to go.
At $9.95 for just the back and $18.95 for the back, accents, and front, these are a great price.

PS I am still amazed at how exact the cutouts and sides are.
I have been really on the fence about getting one of these but the wood and carbon fiber skins have looked really good on video. I am hoping you can answer 2 quick questions for me. I had a carbon fiber skin on a previous phone and it made it a bit slippery. Considering how slippery the glass is on this phone do you think the carbon fiber improves the grip at all? I saw you said it has a texture does the pattern look as good in person as it does in pictures? Similar to laminate vs hardwood floors how you can tell the laminate is fake or does it look good.

The texture does add some grip to the phone, not a lot but much better than plain glass.
The pattern looks wonderful, the carbon fiber one I have looks like blue carbon fiber.
I have had the wood grain dbrand skins before and the texture seems to match up with the pattern and makes it look and feel realistic.
With the exactness of the cuts on the dbrand, I would put them a step above the competition right now.
How about the camera cut out? Looks so small.
Any inteferance with the camera with shadows on the edges?
First of all, thanks for putting this up, looks amazing! I've actually got the mahogany on mine (Front/Back) minus the camera cutout. My main cause of concern now is the screen.
Have you put on a screen protector while having the front on?
Either by applying directly over the screen protector or within the cutout space?

Drand don't cover the sides which I don't like. Prefer Stickerboy skins. They are always slower to release skins but you can cover everything. Been using them for several years.

Thanks for the review. I ordered a DBrand skin and your spot on about the quality. The Carbon skin has a lot of texture and the light plays off of it beautifully.

I have installed two Dbrand skins already and on none of them I used a hairdryer or anything warm after applying the skins. Just pressed on the edges very firmly around the whole thing. No problems what so ever with lifting edges etc. the adhesive is very strong.

Pretty rad
I just got my Dbrand matte black skin, it was more time consuming putting it on than I thought but it looks great. I also didn't use a hair dryer and it came out just fine. Actually the adhesive is stronger than I expected, so even without the hair dryer step I doubt the edges will ever undo itself.
Even though mine looks real slick, a mahogany skin might be replacing the current black one. I'm waiting for a Luphie bumper ATM, so I'll see how it looks andfits first. But so far... I'm pleasantly impressed with Dbrand skins.
