Hi everybody, new to the forums and new to droid - I recently upgraded from the Propel to the Captivate and so far I am loving it. With all the reviews and forums I read before deciding to buy most of my answers have been answered, but not all.
My phone was loaded with 2.2 and when I registered it with Samsung it showed a build date of feb/11 so I'm hoping that my phone has alot of the big fixes already loaded. I have noticed that the gps code listed on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732030
Does not work on my phone, I enter *#*#1472365#*# and the last * just clears the code out of my dialer... no sub-menu, no options, nothing. Any ideas how to do gps testing?
Other question, I spend alot of time off the cell network and I need a gps that works - which app would be good to use? Searching the app store there is quite a few ranging in price, most seem to have mixed reviews. Google does nothing for me since it needs the network to pull up the maps. Basically when I load up the gps it shows me in a sea of nothingness and trying to scroll the map gives me an error 'need network connection' type of message.
Also, I've noticed what looks like 2 small led's one the face of my phone, just to the left of the speaker and the ugly logo. Are these notification leds or something else?
I don't plan on rooting or flashing my phone for a while... yes yes I know, stock sucks, but like I said I was using the Samsung Propel a couple days ago and now the Captivate - I've got alot to learn and alot to get used to before I switch things around. Yes, one day I do want to switch off of stock software just not right now, thanks for the suggestion though. lol
Model SGHI897
Firmware 2.2
Baseband I897UCKB1
Kernel 2.6.32.9

thanks in advance for the help and advice, now it's time to finish reading through the app thread and hit up the store...

As for needing a GPS on without using Data there are a few but to be honest if you need it for reliable GPS, then you got the wrong device. The captivate is known for having terrible GPS and it is unrelible at best. Good enough to help you learn a new town but not good enough to get you where you need to go on time everytime. The led are the light sensors. No led Notifications with the captivte at all unless you rom a custom rom and get BLN from the app store that will light up your 4 bottom keys when you have a message.
I do have a stand alone gps, I was just hoping I'd be able to free up some pocket space with the phone - so far, it just shows a blank screen with a blue indicator and says it's accurate 'within 10 meters'. I was hoping I could find a app that provided maps and maybe help tune it a bit. Next time I'm on the network I'll play around with it and see what kind of readings it gives - even if the gps is low end, I'm still liking this phone so far... a whole lot better than the propel.
Thanks for the update, zelendel

Try using *#*#3214789650#*#* for the dialer code.

One is a proximity sensor and one is a light sensor.
Thanks for the info, I got a couple gps test apps I'm going to mess around with in a while but, I found a new problem that is driving me crazy...
I bought a usb wifi adapter - Asus n13 (b/g/n), in the hopes of using my internet for data and my phone will not connect to wifi. Even driving around town to places that offer free open wifi, my phone will not connect. It finds the wifi hotspots, pulls up the ssid, says connecting, then gets to 'assigning ip' and freezes. On my pc wifi setup, it shows a new connection and 2 seconds later disconnect.
In the phone wifi settings, it keeps showing wifi -connecting....disconnected, back to scanning, connecting in an endless loop - but it never connects. It has the ssid remembered but I cannot delete it or reset it. WPS failed to connect from either end.
Sleep Policy is off
Use Static IP is off
This is a big issue for me since I'm on the cheap att data plan.. I've tried various settings on the pc side of things, all with the same results, I've browsed the internet and done a bit of troubleshooting (ie, different usb ports, different drivers, turning on/off services, etc etc) - I think the problem is on the phone since it does not access any wifi... maybe I missed a setting somewhere?
For now I'm going to dig through the user manual again...
OK, playing around with some of windows wireless settings I've hit a new roadblock... my phone says connecting... Obtaining IP address... Disconnecting... Scanning...
That is one small step closer I think, because it wasnt trying to get an ip address earlier, it was just connecting/disconnecting.
finally! I figured it out!!!
Just for future note.... You have to go into your windows network settings, highlight your broadband AND wifi together - select bridge... restart your pc wifi software and then connect your phone, it should start right up!

You say you do not want to root the phone. But try Launcher Pro anyways to access the LbsTestMode.
1. Sign up/in to the market.
2. Download and install Launcher Pro (it says Pro but there is a FREE version, so dont worry).
3. After install, go to home screen. Long press and choose "Shortcuts"
4. In menu, choose "Activities" (yellow icon).
5. Scroll down and expand the menu "LbsTestMode". Under this is a submenu. Choose the first "LbsTestMode" under this. Yes the main menu and submenu have same name.
6. Choose Ok or whatever, and the icon will be on your Home screen.
7. If you get this far, then you are good.
Open LbstestMode:
1. At the moment you probably should just leave Application Settings to default.
2. Under "Supl/CP settings". And change as follows:
Server: supl.google.com (no "www.")
Server Port: 7276
Secure Socket: OFF
AGPS Mode : SUPL
3. Return to previous menu.
4. DELETE GPS DATA just to clear all previous data.
5. Run "Get Position Test" on top of menu.....
Good Luck !!

Yeah, Google Maps requires a network connection.....BUT when you go into Navigation mode - via the Directions menu and turning on navigation, you get navigation. YOU NEED TO DOWNLOAD VOICE SYNTHESIS from the market to get voice guidance. This a good first try, IF YOUR GPS WORKS !!
Or try NAVIGON for Android ....you can buy it but also check here www.mobilism.org (ahem..ahem). I use daily, and I think it is the best routing....
EDIT: Well...about google maps, I think you need a data connection jsut to open the damn software, so you will need Navigon, Igo primo or similar...I AM ASSUMING YOU WANT ROUTING DIRECTIONS and not hiking type positioning. Then take a look at this http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/content/android-gps-software AND here http://www.backcountrynavigator.com/
Thanks again for the updates, but it seems like either Samsung or ATT has locked out the Lbs Test mode feature, both of the codes have the same result - after entering the last character it clears it out. I did get LauncherPro and am really digging it so far, but even the lbs tests dont do anything, it goes to a blank screen and just sits there... I have the status bar at the top and a totally blank screen. I even set my phone down on a box out in the yard for 30+ minutes and nothing ever came up - using the google and stock settings for the test. I'm guessing if/when I root my phone the tests will work
I started using GPS Test from Chartcross Limited and GPS Status from EclipSim - both show that my gps is accurate between 16.4 and 32.8 feet - depending on which the way the wind is blowing. I've been browsing some of the other gps/map apps but for now I'll just carry around my standard gps when I need it.
Even with the gps issues, I'm really liking this phone alot. I havent really ran into any other problems yet
As title says, For first startup, can I skip selecting wifi connection for now and go forward? Wifi is disabled in office and I cant wait to check out the device until I reach home

After I rooted my N7, I didn't have wifi available at the time. After struggling trying to bypass the wifi connection screens, I just let it sit for a few minutes. When I looked back at the tablet, it either had moved on, or gave me the choice to bypass the wifi setup for now. Either way, it worked.
I had no problem setting up wifi later on when it became available again.
Tap all the corners in a clockwise motion, starting with the top-left. Give it a good solid tap or else you'll be going 'round in circles a few minutes.
One good rotation should dump you at the homescreen. I HIGHLY recommend not getting fancy with it and setting it up properly when you get a connection. If you don't connect it to your Google Account at startup, some things get funky later on. Play around then factory reset it when you get to a good wifi spot.
This is also a great time to just go ass wild with games/apps/widgets/etc just to try them out. Then factory reset and install the ones you want (no residue). I always do that with new devices (even the iPads).
Sorry mate, that stroking four corners idea didn't work. I just tricked the startup logic using a wifi router (without any internet connection), connecting to the network and just skipping the google login. Later used Bluetooth DUN to login into the google account.

This worked for me as well - thanks for the suggestion.
Anyone having issues with Trusted Places not working? I just updated to 5.1 and rooted. Trusted Places does not work at all. I even tried a different location than home. I noticed the location icon no longer flashes in the notification bar when turning the screen on. This use to happen all the time on 5.0.2. It would only display for a second or 2.
I tried turning off and on Smart Lock, turn off and on Smart Lock in Trusted Agents, location history off then on, changed Home address in Maps, different location in Smart Lock, reinstalled GPS 7.0.97, rebooted several times. My location settings are set for High Accuracy as well.
I'm thinking this is an issue with Google Play Services 7.0.97.
It's broken for me to. I read that it was the play services update that did it.

OK I figured that. But its weird since I updated to GPS 7.0.97 on 5.0.2 and didn't have an issue.

Thanks I just fixed it for myself. In addition to my Home address, I added both neighbors to my right and left. Now it works perfectly.

I did not remove my Google address, but added the neighbors address manually and made that the default and it has been working or the last 2 days.
I have two questions.
1. Is there a way to "Trust" my bluetooth headset? Every time I connect I have to enter the pin.
2. Does location "Smart" Lock work for anyone? I am having no luck with it. I still have to unlock my phone whenever I am in a trusted location, even after unlocking it at that location.
Both options work pretty accurately for me. I have a Bluetooth headset and whenever I have it connected the phone never asks for the unlock pattern. The trusted location failed at me very few times, but I have the location settings set to "high accuracy" mode, maybe that's the issue with you? Do you get accurate location when you use maps?

Clarification on #1, I have to reenter the pairing pin "0000" every time, the "Smart" lock works with my bluetooth.
-I do have "Hight Accuracy" selected, and my google maps in within a few feet when I zoom in. I have the circle around the lock when I turn the screen on, but it still asked for the pin.
I was having trouble with trusted places after Google play services updated to 7.087. Didn't try BT. Since Google play services updated to 7.097 trusted places is working again
I have issues with trusted places with mine also. Trusted device and face works flawlessly

Location based trusted places seems to be broken/buggy now - I won't link to them but there are lots of threads at Android Central on the topic.
Ok, so, the location issue is fixed. I picked another location about 2 meters from my "Home" and now it works.
Still no luck with the BT. I tried 2 headsets, and I am having the same issue. They pair fine, they work as a trusted device, they work during calls, but every time I need to pair them with the phone I have to reenter the pairing pin. For some reason my Moto X is not remembering the device.
Hi all, I updated to android-M (completely wipe then installed stock rom). Since then, all the ways of smartlock do not work at all. I checked location access all the apps have it, including system apps (in app permissions). Please help. Has anyone sucesfully gotten Smartlock to work with android-M?
Worked fine for me on stock m and pure nexus
Works fine for me with my BT headset and Android Wear Watch. I've never tried it with a location.
Works with my smartwatch, my location , and my bluetooth stereo adapter thing for my house.
No problems here using MM Pure Nexus using my Android Wear for smart unlock.
Smart Unlock works fine for me with Bluetooth devices...but the location version does seem broken. I even have two location "circles" for my home, to cover a greater area, and I keep having to unlock it manually. This was not an issue for me on 5.1.1.
Location smart lock does not work well for me at all. 5.1.1 it worked great. Bluetooth smart lock is on point.
Location smart lock has been working fine for me the past couple weeks on 6.0. I did run into an issue initially where it seemed like it was stuck thinking I was always at a location to stay unlocked. That was right after I flashed and a reboot solved it.
Location is also broken for me, only works if I manually open Maps and let it settle my location for a bit, then the device stays unlocked for a couple of minutes only. Changing location accuracy has no effect on it.
I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about this...do most people not use location Smart Unlock?
Mine was working flawlessly on 5.1.1 after I upgraded to 6.0 was hit and miss bit I durty flashed the update-after performing factory reset it works fine again
Do you have an exchange account installed? If yes, switch to 'Nine' and it uses app-level encryption rather than device-level. That's the only time it didn't work for me.
Running stock latest image. No tweaks/root.

Location unlock is a bit messy for me as well. I thought only I had it.
Location unlock occasionally doesn't work for me (first thing in the morning, usually, or if the phone has been locked/screen off for an extended period of time), but it works most of the time; and the BT unlock works 100% of the time in my car (stupid Toyota not having Android music controls to browse albums...)

Even when Smart Unlock (Location) is working, it will still lock after an extended period of time untouched. It's just a built in safety feature.
Ok so consensus seems to be that location at least IS broken for a lot of people...I'm not sure why though, at least it's not just me.
Same here
Running Google nexus 5 and stock marshmallow, unrooted. Have had same problem since upgrade to marshmallow. Location worked beautifully on lollipop. Bluetooth still fine. Basically sometimes I'm lucky and it unlocks with smart lock, but mostly it's a manual unlock. Noticed that it does sometimes eventually unlock smartly when one waits a while on lock screen and screen on. Keep tapping it to keep active. Very frustrating, adding a feature in past which you get used to and then breaks in future.
It would seem that if a trusted location has an address, it does not work so well, if at all.
Moving the trusted location pin around so that the trusted location uses gps coordinates instead of an address seems to work more consistently. No recent problems with smart lock trusted locations.
The location smart lock never worked for me even in lollipop. The only way I got it to work is by dropping something like 20-30 pins to blanket my county to ever get it to say it unlocked for location. And in google's location history thing it looks all good with points dropped frequently at my house.
Me too, my cellphone don't unlock in my house.
He work well on 5.0.2, now I'm in 6.0 and don't work. I go to do downgrade
