[Q] Sdcard unexpectedly removed - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Do you guys keep getting this error?
Sometimes, when I open the camera, it says that there is no sdcard inserted (I'm saving the pictures in the external sdcard, a 32GB Sandisk Ultra), then Android says it was unexpectedly removed and then automatically mounts it.
I'm doing some tests, but it looks like it happens only with the sony's camera app. The sdcard was working flawlessly with my Note II, I'm with the Z3C only since last week.

I was beginning to think I was the only one with this problem.
The error occurred most often with the camera app, but I've also experienced it in other instances, even just by unlocking to the home screen. There doesn't seem to be any particular or related events that trigger the unexpected removal, and I've been unsuccessful in attempts to reproduce the error.
I had hoped it was a KK issue, but it still pops up occasionally after upgrading to L. Similarly, my SD card is also a Sandisk Ultra, albeit of the 64GB flavor, and worked flawlessly with my previous phone Z1 compact, so I highly doubt it's caused by the SD card.
Given that this problem doesn't seem to be wide spread, I guess it's probably an isolated hardware fault with this unit. I doubt sending it in for service would be helpful though, because of the apparently random occurance. For some reason, gadgets these days rarely misbehave when in the hands of customer care or engineers, but always hiccups in our hands.
Anyway, it's nice to know that it's not "just me". I'll consider servicing it under warranty if I get the chance, and report back should I have any updates.

Perhaps cleaning of the physical contacts of the SD card might solve the issue.

you probably need to format the sd card
I had the same problem, searched in other forums and found out that other users of z3c are very satisfied wit this particular brand of sdcard, so I was confused. I reformated my sdcard as a last resort option and it solved the problem. My sdcard, like yours, had also been previously used in a different phone. Those very satisfied guys in other forums had just bought the card brand new, I guess that's why they didn't have any issues.

Well, I think the problem may be related to Sandisk SD cards... I was using a 64GB Ultra Class 10 on my Z3C (which I was using on my old Note II with no problems at all) and this problem was happening... since it the card was a little old, I bought a new Sandisk 64GB Ultra Class 10 and the problem happened on the first day of use, actually a couple of minutes after I inserted it for the first time.
So I read somewhere that it might be a Sandisk fault, so I changed to a 64GB Samsung (don't remember the class, I'm too lazy to check it right now) and the problems seems to be gone!
Formatting the sd card didn't solve the problem.

As I wrote, I thought the problem was gone after reformatting. The truth is that in the past couple of days it reappeared once again.
Is your new Samsung card still OK with the Z3C? If so, would you be so kind and write exactly which Samsung card it is? I would appreciate it a lot.

I have this problem aswell. Using a Transcend 16GB class 6 that has been with me a few years. Never had problem with this card before.

I want to buy a new MicroSD 8gb card.
which brand will fit best on my hd2?
Buy a micro sdhc card.
You can buy 2,4,6 class cards. The bigger the number the faster the card is.
It is a good idea to choose a big brand with retail (blister?) package. Cards sold without proper package might be fake. You can find sdhc class 2 memcards labeled as class 6 on ebay...
Look for the sdhc logo and the number in the circle referring to its speed.

And wth as this got to do with Android SD development???
Doesn't anybody read forum titles, take 5 seconds to think or even read the big forum announcements on every single section of forum, or the front page news regarding Dev sections???
Ridiculous.
Thread reported.
There are many classes, it depends on the money u want to spend. Personally, I recommend one of 8 or 12Gb, because it's a good capacity and a good price too.
Sandisk works fine for me
They are cheap to get. I am using SanDisk and can't complain. Best have a look at an electronic devices shop.

My mistake. I didn't see that. Apologies @theatheist.
Class 4+ is really more comfortable. But I think it don't has to be a SanDisc.. only if you want to be really safe.
It all depends on how you use your sd card. If you dont store a ton of video/pics/roms on your sd card & you dont transfer the media over to your computer often then a 4-8gb sdhc class 4 should do fine. if you store a lot of info on it & regularly transfer it back & forth from your cell to your computer i would invest in a 8gb sdhc class 6 or greater. i personally use a transcend sdhc class 10 that i sniped on ebay for just under $15 & it works great. if you do go that route you will need 2 test your micro sd 2 make sure it meets up 2 its claims bc there are a lot of sellers (especially on ebay) that sell fake/hacked sd cards so make sure you test it & buy a trusted name.
i have a sdhc card with 8GB class 6. and that`s fast enough
i use a 16GB SanDisk class4 for my HTC HD2 with android and apps2sd...works really fine an prices of SDHC cards are really low at the moment (like the prices of memory for computers )
with SanDisk i never had bad experiences
PNY 32GB Class 10
I use PNY 32GB class 10 SDHC card. It works great.
I'm running NAND Android.

64GB Micro SD works when formatted to FAT32

I used EASEUS to format on my laptop - and all seems perfect
Wow...Could you post wich one did you buy and where?
Congratulations, nice catch!

64gb card
Thank you for your post, I bought the sandisk 64gb card, formated it to fat32 and it works perfectly [in fact its a bit zippier than my previously full 32 gb card which i believe was class 4]. The card was a bit pricey, but well worth it. Thanks again.
i just bought one of these and it works fine in cwm, but is not detected in android, ive tried stock 2.3.4 and leaked ics, neither wants to know of the cards existence.
Solved:, poor formatting on my part.

When I purchased a 64GB Micro SD Card for my phone just before Christmas, it wouldn't work at all - Even when formatted to FAT32.
Its now used in an SD card adapter for my girlfriends Nintendo 3DS... So there's no chance I'm getting that back.
Can you provide the model of the card you purchased? I've got two 32GB cards for my Play currently, Both have exactly the same apps cloned between them but different caches for different games - So I have to swap over every time i want to play a game on the other card lol. xD (Most of the are ROMs mind you...)
Buying know thanks for the tip.
Fat32 can be formatted up to 2tb. That is its maximum

OK... I just got this card and transferred all the data from my 32GB micoSD to the new 64GB microSDXC... and the weird thing is that it is taking up more space on the SDXC than the SD... so I'm guessing that the problem is that it isn't formatted to FAT32... so how do I do that? Using Win7Pro, I don't see an option to format it to FAT32... any ideas?
I formatted this card with the phone but it is also possible to format it with a computer using third party format tools.
And the problem with the data which takes more space from your 64GB card than it took from your 32GB card could be related to the clustersize. Maybe the system chose a bigger size in order to have less effort to deal with the size of the card. However if there are files which are below this clustersize they are always as big as the clustersize. So the data needs more space.
Thanks for the tip I really gotta try this 64gb would practically hold my life lol

My phone has an annoying glitch where I move or delete files on the SD card, and the SD card shows that there's new space after deletion, but when I try to put in a new file, there's no space!
Every couple of months I have to transfer the files I wanna keep to my PC, then format the card to get the lost capacity back. I first noticed it when I tried putting some anime episodes on the card when it showed 2GB free, but then it said the card was full!
The aforementioned glitch only happens when I delete/move files through Android or when the storage is mounted to USB. Never happens when the card is plugged into Windows and being manipulated directly through an adapter instead of the phone.
If you guys transfer a lot of stuff on those cards, I'd suggest getting one of these
I have a red one and it's super handy when you wanna transfer, format etc. Plus it's got a keychain so if you have school, you can keep it on hand.
By using that instead I've avoided the storage issues.

storage options

hey everyone! I've been looking to buy a nexus 7 but the lack of expandable memory is making it hard to justify buying and the fact that the biggest option is 16GB of internal storage (13GB available).
Now I'm still going to buy it just because i cant resist but does anyone think there is a way I could actually replace the internal SD card with my own larger one? i ask this because I have seen in a few phones that the internal storage is nothing more than a regular SD card.
anyways it would be great if anyone has any ideas or if you really think cloud storage is just fine let me know
Being totally unqualified to comment (but that has never stopped me),
you would be silly buying a Nexus 7 with the idea of replacing the internal SD card yourself.
Maybe a teardown will reveal a standard SD card socket - but I highly doubt it.
Sockets cost a lot more than a surface mount device, and you really don't want to go there. Even if you are able to replace the SD card, the boot rom is likely to have an idea as to the size and format of the SD - and you can't change that.

Not many people can answer your question now since not many have them. We will have to wait for IFixIt to break one down. There are stories on people replacing the sdcard chip with a larger one via soldering but we won't know for sure until someone opens one up.
At it's current infant stage, best storage option is to use an OTG cable & sdcard.
Also, need to wait to see if dev's are able to improve anything.
Can't comment on cloud storage because you need to tell us what type of user you are: gamer, video watcher, etc....
I'm a gamer & the best way for me to to backup Android folder & remove game files that I'm currently not playing. When I do play that game, I transfer back the game files to Android folder.
Basically you have to manage your storage space. Also need to factor in storage for nandroids.
I'll say 16gb is enough if you manage your space: backup files & transferring them back when needed, etc.
Transcend storejet cloud 64gb wireless ssd hard drive is $99.00 on amazon. Small enough for put in your pocket, 5-6 hrs battery. I can put link here, cause i'm newbie lol.
or
Kingston Wi-Drive: short battery, it's exspensive.
or
Maxell AirStash flash drive: good battery, but it's very exspensive.
^ Following the previous posters answers, I would recommend a Seagate GoFlex Satellite & mod it to 1TB. credit goes to the folks in this thread

Cloud only works for multimedia. It doesn't work for games/apps that take up space. Games (non-casual) can get pretty big. Ditto for some apps, eg Google Maps offline caching. One solution,

In SM Megamall. That was on sale - I bought it @ 1,800.00 pesos (about $ 42)
i have this
but i think it is not real class 10 it working like class 8 or class 6
Very nice.
Btw, is this 32GB microsd card class 10 a fake one in your opinion?
It is written on it but since there's no brand nor package, we can't verify...
EDIT: Err, in fact there's a brand, my bad...
You should ask more photos from the vendor to verify...
Dont know if its fake or not. cost $45(php1900) but one thing is for sure, its stable, i no longer have gallery thumbnail problems and faster sd media scanning unlike my previous class4 one.

I found a very cheap sd card on ebay.
$19.00 for a 32GB.
Looked fake and rubbish at first, but suprisingly i've been using it for almost 5 months with no problems.
Can't post links and images yet, sorry.
You guys think a class 10 16gb sdcard is enough?
Sent from my Paranoid Jelly Phone
Sizewise 16 gb is just fine for me. But depends pon torre media usage. I shot a lot of 720p videos , have few movies and audio albums. At any time at least 2 nandroid backups. IGo gps ( 400 mb maps).
And still have nearly 2 gb free.
Price difference nowadays is hardly worth considering. It is cheap
If i was buying now it would be the same do i want to spend 18-20 euro for 16 class 10, or 30-35 for 32.
why should I need 32 GB on my phone !!! I really don't get it I think 16 GB is even way more storage and I will never be able to run it out
We Xperia u users happy with 6GB :'(

Pankaja, you are correct. My 32GB Transcend SDCard is now dead. The files saved in the SDCard became permanent. I cannot save more files or delete files already saved. Tried formatting when phone is on or in CWM Recovery. Also tried formatting with card reader. Still no success.
I'm now back to my Sandisk 2GB provided when I bought my phone.
CAUTION! To all other users. I suggest do not buy or use Trancend SDCard for our phone. This is based on actual experience.
Well, i'm getting a 16 gb class 10 transcend card soon

Damaged emmc is where a section of the chip becomes unwritable through corruption. There is no way to recover this damaged space except by replacing the chip, and as it's hot soldered onto the board, they just replace the entire motherboard which is v expensive. I don't know what process you took to recover the emmc, but I imagine it was by scanning all sectors and bypassing the damaged portion in which case 8gb is all you're gonna get, and fairly standard I'm afraid. Sometimes, if you're lucky, repeating the scan of sectors can free up some more space.
Because of the limited space, you might experience freezes and reboots on stock roms because of their size, if this happens, just try a deodexed or cm based rom.
All the best, let us know how you get on.

I didnt use any scanning method via the recovery because it was too buggy to use,
I used an .pit file to repartition, it was for the common emmc bricks.
I do sometimes get random reboots (just reloading android, no real reboot) but it isnt really an issue, just have to do an real restart else battery will drain
After all for 70 euros im happy with the device, it has no major issues else than sometimes the random reboots
I think im a lucky man fixing the emmc brick?
Thanks for ur help! Atleast 8gb of space 32gb microsd card will help
