hey everyone! I've been looking to buy a nexus 7 but the lack of expandable memory is making it hard to justify buying and the fact that the biggest option is 16GB of internal storage (13GB available).
Now I'm still going to buy it just because i cant resist but does anyone think there is a way I could actually replace the internal SD card with my own larger one? i ask this because I have seen in a few phones that the internal storage is nothing more than a regular SD card.
anyways it would be great if anyone has any ideas or if you really think cloud storage is just fine let me know
Being totally unqualified to comment (but that has never stopped me),
you would be silly buying a Nexus 7 with the idea of replacing the internal SD card yourself.
Maybe a teardown will reveal a standard SD card socket - but I highly doubt it.
Sockets cost a lot more than a surface mount device, and you really don't want to go there. Even if you are able to replace the SD card, the boot rom is likely to have an idea as to the size and format of the SD - and you can't change that.

Not many people can answer your question now since not many have them. We will have to wait for IFixIt to break one down. There are stories on people replacing the sdcard chip with a larger one via soldering but we won't know for sure until someone opens one up.
At it's current infant stage, best storage option is to use an OTG cable & sdcard.
Also, need to wait to see if dev's are able to improve anything.
Can't comment on cloud storage because you need to tell us what type of user you are: gamer, video watcher, etc....
I'm a gamer & the best way for me to to backup Android folder & remove game files that I'm currently not playing. When I do play that game, I transfer back the game files to Android folder.
Basically you have to manage your storage space. Also need to factor in storage for nandroids.
I'll say 16gb is enough if you manage your space: backup files & transferring them back when needed, etc.
Transcend storejet cloud 64gb wireless ssd hard drive is $99.00 on amazon. Small enough for put in your pocket, 5-6 hrs battery. I can put link here, cause i'm newbie lol.
or
Kingston Wi-Drive: short battery, it's exspensive.
or
Maxell AirStash flash drive: good battery, but it's very exspensive.

Cloud only works for multimedia. It doesn't work for games/apps that take up space. Games (non-casual) can get pretty big. Ditto for some apps, eg Google Maps offline caching. One solution,

64gb card
Thank you for your post, I bought the sandisk 64gb card, formated it to fat32 and it works perfectly [in fact its a bit zippier than my previously full 32 gb card which i believe was class 4]. The card was a bit pricey, but well worth it. Thanks again.
i just bought one of these and it works fine in cwm, but is not detected in android, ive tried stock 2.3.4 and leaked ics, neither wants to know of the cards existence.
Solved:, poor formatting on my part.

When I purchased a 64GB Micro SD Card for my phone just before Christmas, it wouldn't work at all - Even when formatted to FAT32.
Its now used in an SD card adapter for my girlfriends Nintendo 3DS... So there's no chance I'm getting that back.
Can you provide the model of the card you purchased? I've got two 32GB cards for my Play currently, Both have exactly the same apps cloned between them but different caches for different games - So I have to swap over every time i want to play a game on the other card lol. xD (Most of the are ROMs mind you...)
Buying know thanks for the tip.
Fat32 can be formatted up to 2tb. That is its maximum

OK... I just got this card and transferred all the data from my 32GB micoSD to the new 64GB microSDXC... and the weird thing is that it is taking up more space on the SDXC than the SD... so I'm guessing that the problem is that it isn't formatted to FAT32... so how do I do that? Using Win7Pro, I don't see an option to format it to FAT32... any ideas?
I formatted this card with the phone but it is also possible to format it with a computer using third party format tools.
And the problem with the data which takes more space from your 64GB card than it took from your 32GB card could be related to the clustersize. Maybe the system chose a bigger size in order to have less effort to deal with the size of the card. However if there are files which are below this clustersize they are always as big as the clustersize. So the data needs more space.
Thanks for the tip I really gotta try this 64gb would practically hold my life lol

My phone has an annoying glitch where I move or delete files on the SD card, and the SD card shows that there's new space after deletion, but when I try to put in a new file, there's no space!
Every couple of months I have to transfer the files I wanna keep to my PC, then format the card to get the lost capacity back. I first noticed it when I tried putting some anime episodes on the card when it showed 2GB free, but then it said the card was full!
The aforementioned glitch only happens when I delete/move files through Android or when the storage is mounted to USB. Never happens when the card is plugged into Windows and being manipulated directly through an adapter instead of the phone.
If you guys transfer a lot of stuff on those cards, I'd suggest getting one of these
I have a red one and it's super handy when you wanna transfer, format etc. Plus it's got a keychain so if you have school, you can keep it on hand.
By using that instead I've avoided the storage issues.
Just wanna share my SD Card.

In SM Megamall. That was on sale - I bought it @ 1,800.00 pesos (about $ 42)
i have this
but i think it is not real class 10 it working like class 8 or class 6
Very nice.
Btw, is this 32GB microsd card class 10 a fake one in your opinion?
It is written on it but since there's no brand nor package, we can't verify...
EDIT: Err, in fact there's a brand, my bad...
You should ask more photos from the vendor to verify...
Dont know if its fake or not. cost $45(php1900) but one thing is for sure, its stable, i no longer have gallery thumbnail problems and faster sd media scanning unlike my previous class4 one.

I found a very cheap sd card on ebay.
$19.00 for a 32GB.

Sizewise 16 gb is just fine for me. But depends pon torre media usage. I shot a lot of 720p videos , have few movies and audio albums. At any time at least 2 nandroid backups. IGo gps ( 400 mb maps).
And still have nearly 2 gb free.
Price difference nowadays is hardly worth considering. It is cheap
If i was buying now it would be the same do i want to spend 18-20 euro for 16 class 10, or 30-35 for 32.
why should I need 32 GB on my phone !!! I really don't get it I think 16 GB is even way more storage and I will never be able to run it out

Pankaja, you are correct. My 32GB Transcend SDCard is now dead. The files saved in the SDCard became permanent. I cannot save more files or delete files already saved. Tried formatting when phone is on or in CWM Recovery. Also tried formatting with card reader. Still no success.
I'm now back to my Sandisk 2GB provided when I bought my phone.

Well, what to say?! Not everything got better in newer versions, unfortunately. Google implemented a lot restrictions with regards to external SDcards.
However, I can't seem to spot any really consuming Apps in your Screenshot, except maybe the Games. Possibly helpful to post a shot of settings -> memory to sort it out.

ill be honest, i just want the ability to modify my sd card while on my phone. I often save large files and i store my music collection on my sd card along with my books and school work. Any way to write/modify any files on my sd card without root? Who at google thought it was a good idea to lock its users out of their own sd cards? Anyway ill just wait for a way to unlock the bootloader without losing drm keys and then eventually im sure a custom rom will come out. Until then ill just have to use my computer to modify my sd card. NBD.

Any app can write to its own folder on the SD card. Without root, no app except system apps can write to the whole SD card for security reasons. This will be changed with Android L (introduction of a new permission).

That's not what I meant, I use solid explorer but can't actually modify anything on the card just read. As the guy below you said only system apps can transfer stuff or it has to go into the android folder.
@OP:
I'm 90% sure you don't need a lot of those apps. Try and see if you really need **** and uninstall it if the launch count is below a certain threshold (back in Gingerbread, I set mine to once per month and I ended up uninstalling almost half my apps). Or try finding a lighter app that does the same thing.
Only once in my entire life was I able to fill up a 16GB device with apps only (on a 16GB Nexus 7), and even those were just games (of 100MB+ in size).
My point -- 16GB is more than enough for the majority of users, there is no reason for a developer to waste time doing edits to please the minority you are part of.
Also your OP is ridiculous. And the post isn't in the correct Forum subsection.
You're German ffs, show that! :ID
Just saw this thread and had to reply, because it seems like good news for everybody who owns an sd card
http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...5-0-shows-google-still-loves-sd-cards-1271803
According to this google is loosening the sd card restrictions on the new android, at least as it regards storage of third party apps on the sd card.
Just wanted to share this to spread the hopefully true news, maybe an app2sd will also be implemented.
As I said three posts before
This thread absolutely does not belong in the Original Development subforum.
You could root and get xposed running which could fix your problem.
Trow away navigator, it's rubbish. Can use sygic and put the roadmaps on the sd. Saved me 4gb internal memory.
I guess that's a returning question.. but in relation to the Moto X 2014:
- how much space is available on the 16Gb version of the new X in it's stock state?
- all of you having the 16Gb version already, how do you deal with the situation? Is it enough, it is horribly short on space or something in between?
thanks a lot..
ps. dang, can't edit the title.. sorry about the phrasing.
The stock delivered moto x 2014 has about 9.5GB of free space. (XT1092)

Weird, my XT1092 arrived with 10.06 GB available.
It's pretty cramped, I take a lot of pictures and videos.
I got an 64GB OTG USB stick, where I move some of my files periodically.
When I decide to root, that's where I'll put my backups and firmwares.
I use Microsofts OneDrive to auto-upload photos and videos just to make sure
Because I use Windows 8.1 and OneDrive is integrated really nicely, I get access to my stuff as if it's a folder when I get home.
If anyone knows of a gallery app that allows you to browse online files as if they were on-device, that would be great.
My old HTC One had that built into the gallery, was pretty neat.
Sorry i've forgotten to mention that i used the migrate app to sync my call protocols and messages + Whatsapp Backup.
Could be that 10.06 minus 09.50 = 506 Megabytes make the difference
Did the same thing like the guy above me. Got an USB OTG stick and thats fine for music and media files etc.. I dont mind the lack of storage, but a bit more is nice.
Coming from a 32GB HTC One, it was a scary step back (the 32GB Moto X is not available in Europe), but I think it might be enough.
I have a generous data plan and I use Google Play Music so I stream everything from the cloud. Conversely, all my pictures are instantly uploaded to Dropbox so I can periodically delete most of them from my phone. This basically eliminates the need for extensive media storage. What's left is apps and caching. I don't play a lot of games on my phone anymore so 16GB goes a long way.
I came from a Galaxy S4 with 16 gb storage and 32 gb sd card. Truth be told, the only thing I used the sd card for was music and backups. I now have the 16 gb version motox and with the apps less music I still have over 7gb free. So unless I get real stupid and download a lot of apps I don't see this being a problem. It is kind of like having a big hard drive in your computer, if you don't need to delete files you probably never will but that doesn't mean you actually use them. I keep all my music on dropbox and just stream it.... wifi is free.
I don't want to hijack the thread but does an OTG USB stick mount without root?

10.06 GB. I'm a heavy user, however all of my music and photos are stored in the cloud (spotify and google+)
I never purchase aything but 16gb versions (unless of course the smallest is 32gb). I have never had an issue with space. I don't store music/movies/absurd amounts of pictures or apps on my devices. I have computers and the cloud for that and never saw the fun in seeing how many useless apps I could install.
If your the type that likes to keep your life collections of pictures, or loves keeping all your videos of your kids/pets/etc on your phone, or you are one of the people that think you need to have your music library on your phone, then do not get the 16gb.

Yup, works without you needing to do anything.
You have to go to settings and dismount manually, otherwise it'll complain when putting it back in and I believe it runs a checkdisk command, as it takes way longer.
There's no drop down menu, go to settings and storage, and it's there in the very bottom.

Alas, that d/l and u/l is got to be on WiFi, I also have the 64GB version and if I loaded my music on it, I could fill it up quick. But with limited data plans (Mines 6GB a month) using data to listen to music is a bad idea.. Movies use up even more.. I use to have a OTG reader, but lost it... I dont have alot of songs or ringtones on my N5 (about 100 total combined ) but I do have about 35 movies and tv shows stored on it that I rotate on and off periodically. I own them on digital downloads or DVD and then upload them to my laptop where I convert them to AVI or MKV files (higher compression rates and less storage space a 2 hour movie is about 700mb) so I can store more in less space, this way I always have them and dont need to download them when ever I want to
I can run my own radio station with the music I have stored. Only about 5 or 6 movies. I don't load up unless I go on a trip. Then I delete them when I get home. Still would have liked a extended battery case with the sd card slot built in... :good:

I bought the case with memory blade, the blade has 32GB built in storage, a micro sd slot, and extra battery! The blades are inter changeable with t he other cases they make for other models so you could use one blade with say an iPhone, annd you're Notre 5. They're also supposed to be stackable so you could add two or more memory blades on top of each other! I preordered the case and blade, but they're not set to ship until the end of the month!
