So removing the stock message app is prob not a good idea then?
Yeah, don't remove it unless you don't want any texts! All the market apps piggyback the htc app's connection / protocol and just disable the notifications for the original app.
You can remove the others you listed with no problems though
I just want to make sure, if I remove peep, I can still receive twitter updates if I download a third party client from the marketplace?

Yes, you can.
I was curious of the same question as you. It sucks for me though because I use Handcent for my sms/mms needs but even with the notifications disabled in the stock messaging app it still pops up in both
I had handcent, default messages, and google voice on my phone back when I was running stock 1.5 and I only recieved notifications from handcent. I am not sure which rom you are running or which settings in messages you have checked or unchecked. Let me know.
DesktopSMS forwards all your incoming SMS on your *Android Phone* to your Gmail to GTalk.
You can then reply to the chat request or email, and the response will be sent back from your phone as a text message. This is very similar to Google Voice, except you won't need a new number or anything annoying like that!
http://app.net/desktopsms
Installation:
1) Install DesktopSMS on your ANDROID PHONE. (Not onto your XOOM)
2) Login to Desktop SMS on your ANDROID ****PHONE****.
3) Install a Chat client like Google Talk (which may already be on your XOOM) onto your XOOM or desktop PC.
4) Receive a text. Watch as your text gets converted to an email and google chat message
5) Respond!
So, once again, this app is only installed on your phone. Then just install your favorite IM client on your desktop and tablet, and the rest will work magically!
You do not need to install this on both your phone and tablet like other apps. You do not need to be on the same network like other apps. This all works by magic (my servers).
Let me know what you think. This is in a free beta right now, so be prepared for some bugs! I'd love to hear your feedback.
Wrote you a PM
well, I don't have a smart phone so thats a problem.
I, like many others, have ditched their smartphomes and activated their xooms. I now only have a dummy phone. I didn't see a need in paying for two data plans because I ws rarey using my phone. Now I use it to talk and text.... even though I wish it was only to talk.
I am waiting for the day that I can SMS on my Xoom using my current phone number. Guess I'll jabe to keep waiting. lol
Works awesome...just had a conversation with myself, through gtalk. Hahaha havnt tried it with my xoom yet. But im pretty sure it will work just fine. Very good job
It looks great but I cannot seem to get it to work yet, Mr. Koush. I have it signed it with push notifications successfully on my gmail account on my OG Droid. I can do the test message from within the app and it pops up on my phone like always, but other than that it does nothing on my Xoom, or on anything else for that matter. It seems almost like the push notifications are not even being sent out.
EDIT: I found out what the problem was. I had the default messaging app totally disabled, as I am using Handcent SMS as a complete replacement to the default one. I would like to use Handcent SMS instead of the default one. I know its beta and I cannot wait for updates!

I had that same "issue" so thanks for posting the solution. User error as usual
Is there a way to make the contact name show up or will we need to add these email addresses to our contacts? Thanks and awesome job!

It looks like after you receive your first text from that person after you accepted the "chat invite" on your Gtalk account it syncs up with your current contact list automatically. It shows the phone number on the left side of the screen under your gmail account, but in the chat window it shows that contacts name in parenthesis.
This ofcourse is for if you are using the Xoom with Gtalk, such as myself. I haven't tried anything else yet.
Could it be that the contacts NAME will be in the gtalk LIST instead of phonenumber ?
OK, being a bit thick here.
I'm using GoSMS Pro, but as far as I know, the default messaging app is still active, just without any notifications... does this make a difference?
Not currently receiving any notifications in email or g-talk... :/

*edit* update took care of it, never mind.
@Koush
I am having an issue getting the app to try it out. When I tell the system to send me a link, it does, but it sends me a link for the link request page again. It does not send me a link to the actual app.
EDIT: Nevermind. I figured it out. Shouldn't browse until I had my coffee.
Is GTalk the only SMS application that will work on the tablet if the tablet is WiFi only?

Is it possible that your push servers are blocked in China?
I can correctly Login with Google Account, but get an error on 'registering with push server....' (takes long and eventually times out)
Error message: "Login failed. Please check your password. If the error persists, please send a log to the developer"
here is a log... maybe it helps analyze why i can't connect with the push servers...
Ok, it's just updated, and when I go to send a test SMS, it brings up
The application GoSMS was found installed. If you do not recieve a text message, please verify that it has not disabled SMS notifications in the application's settings.

So that's cool, then I send the test. GoSMS then pops up the text, as it always does.
However, it still doesn't appear to be sending me an email.
When it says "please verify that it has not disabled SMS notifications in the application's settings", does it mean the default Messaging app?
I've tested by disabling the taskbar notification for GoSMS and re-enabling it for the default Messaging app, but even then, there is no sound nor visual cue that an SMS has arrived... is this why it's not working? Has GoSMS broken my default messaging app?

Of course, I have BIG RED. :/
Updated to stock 4.4.2 today and after that my contact pics are gone from Textra. I have also tried Handcent and Ninja sms but contact pics only show in my contact list and in the stock messaging app.
Tried removing the Facebook sync and uninstalling Textra. Then restarted, readded the Facebook sync and then reinstalled Textra. Didn't get me anywhere.
I've googled and searched this forum but it seems that I'm fairly alone with this issue after this update. Worked fine before the update on stock 4.3.
Any ideas?

Did you ever solve this? I have the same problem as you. HTC One with Textra...cleared data/cache from app. Uninstalled, then reinstalled and still nothing. Never had an issue before 4.4.2

Unfortunately no. I gave up and installed Sync Me recommended by the Textra team. It fixed the problem but I don't like having to install an additional app to solve my problem.

ya, i was about to reply with the same solution. i installed it, synced everything and then just hibernated sync.me. Definitely not a great solution but i've had issues with every single sms app out there and this one has had the least amount of issues so hopefully this is it.

Yep. I had this problem after updating to 4.4 and still in 4.4.2. I asked around but nobody ever answered me. Did some searching and I believe it is because either Facebook or Google or HTC only allows for the Contact photos to be used in system apps (such as the stock messaging app or stock contacts app) but not for third-party apps, hence the need of sync.me or haxsync or whatever. I have been searching for another solution cause I hate that stuff and I feel like the only solution is to flash a custom rom. Just thought I'd share.
Also, someone else asked in Dec but no replies

You have to remember that awhile ago google removed the facebiok sync option from the stick set up due to FB privacy policies. You will have no choice but to use a 3rd party app to do this from now on, if you want to sync to FB.

I read about that searching for an answer to the problem, however I read the change was made back in 4.1. I upgraded from 4.3 and this was not an issue before the upgrade. Sync me runs smoothly in the background and doesn't bother me much so for now I'm going along with it.
System app fix
There's a simple fix without a third party syncing app if you're rooted. Use titanium backup to convert Textra to a system app and all your contact pictures should show right up. I know I'm a little late to the party, but I figured I'd throw this out there in case anyone was still looking for a fix.

This process worked for me too, except I used FX File Explorer to move the apk to the system/app folder using root explorer. (I didn't have the donate version of Titanium Backup to convert it to a system app.) Just needed to reboot and all the contact pics showed up. Sprint HTC One M7. (Android 4.4.3 but also worked on 4.4.2). Thanks for this great tip!
How can you disable the messenger app and just use Facebook for messages. For instance iPhone has a mod that you can install to disable the need to download Facebook messenger. How would we do that on android.
Facebook has removed the message feature from its native app, and now requires you to use its messenger app. Maybe you can restore an older backed up version of Facebook?

Seriously?!?!?! One Facebook app is already more than enough. There's no way I'm installing their stupid messaging app.
I sure hope they don't get rid of notifications for tags, wall posts, etc. I want to know if someone tags me in a picture that I don't approve of or posts useless crap on my wall....
Yeah i feel the same way. I saw on the iPhone in Cydia that there was mod to bypass that to have messenger and I thought maybe we could have one or there is one out there for android bc you know android is so much better.

Hey guys i need some help. I've got a bootloader unlocked(30.B7) rooted, stock 4.4.4 Moto X and I'm having the hardest time trying to figure out why I cant send text messages but im somehow able to receive them. I can get sms and mms but cannot send. I've tried using different text message apps and none can send. I've tried factory resetting and that didn't help either. Anyone have a clue?

It's possible your message center (SMSC) number setting has been changed or reset somehow (maybe if you recently swapped sim cards or something). Try resetting it by following the guide in the link below (disregard the CyanogenMod branding, it's the same for stock ROM).
if you can't use *#*#4636#*#* then either make an activity shortcut to Phone Info or use one of the dedicated apps in the play store, like Radio Switcher (the apps don't do anything but open Phone Info menu).
link: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/SMSC_Updates
OK so i gave this a try and had no luck with the getting my carriers SMSC. I also found on one site that deleting my stock sms app may be the problem? sounds kinda lame since I've done that on other rooms but on other phones. Could that be it?
Yes, if you re-install the stock messaging app it will work.
I've tried different 'stock' sms apps form the play store with no luck still.
By 'stock' sms app I mean the system app 'Messenger" that came with the phone that you uninstalled. You will have to search around to find it since it is not in Play. Next time just disable a system app, do not uninstall it. That way if it breaks something you can re-enable it.
OK so I found the stock sms app and installed it, still a no go. I even tried converting it to a system app using Titanium backup. I've found that in that app and also Hangouts when I enter a thread the app FC's. I don't know what else it could be
Sent from my XT1056 using XDA Free mobile app
Did you set the stock SMS app to the correct permissions? Probably time to flash the system.
