[Q] Touch screen issues - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all. I need your assistance with my HTC one M7. It is running andriod version 4.3, htc sense 5.5, software number 3.62.531.1, htc sdk api level 5.65.
The problem i have is that the section of the screen just below the small icons at the very top ( battery status , wifi, signal, etc..) does not appear to be working when the phone is vertical. I can pull down the menu and all other parts of the screen work ok. When i turn the phone horizontal all section of the screen works perfectly...even those that do not work when the phone is vertical. The only app that seems to work full vertical is the camera...i have access to all buttons.
In vertical position when i open any of my web browsers i am unable to type in the URL...when i hit that section of the screen nothing happens. If i turn the phone horizontal it works! This is basically happening to all my apps. That little section of screen just not working. I though the phone may have been physically damaged but the camera works ok....i am able to use all buttons in vertical position. I tried resetting the touch calibration that did not help.
Please let me know if you can help me with this.

dial *#*#3424#*#* and do the touch screen test (line drawing test) If you can see that a part of the screen isn't responsive then its a bad digitizer and will need to be replaced.

Hi. Thanks much for the tip. I did the test and that part of the screen did not work. I guess its a physical issue. Do you know if it can be fixed or is the phone gone for good? If it can be fixed does it make sense to try to fix it or just replace the phone? I appreciate your advice.

Best Buy was clearing out their M7 stock for $149 .. their all over ebay now under $200 ..that should be cheaper than a screen replacement unless you still have a warranty

Thanks much.

Touch screen problem
Hi,
Were you able to solve your problem?
Im having the exact same problem with a friends phone.
are you using a custom ROM by chance? More specifically, Cyanogen Mod 7 has a "tablet tweak" settings menu that allows you to use "dead zones" on the screen. If that's not the case I would check with your provider or place you purchased it from and see if they can help point you in the right direction.

The phone was on stock rom, chaned it to see if problem would go. Still same.
I live in Bolivia, so it will be a bit hard to get support.

Touchscreen multitouch problems and capacitative buttons

Get multitouch visualizer from play store. the touchscreen is poor, especially with multitouch (only seems to support 2 touch points, the 2nd finger often is not detected, or causes the first to no longer be detected.) The caapacative buttons are hard to press sometimes, or do not respond. very annoying.
Enable the show touches option in the settings of the developer options, it works much better.

Probably need to disable the HTC Gesture option in Settings->Display. After that it'll recognize 10 touch points.
What's HTC gesture?

Just tried it with the HTC gestures turned off, multitouch visualizer 2 recognized 10 touches.
Indeed, turning HTC gestures off gives more touch points, but I still have the problem of the capacitative buttons not being as sensitive as the rest of the screen. They FREQUENTLY do not seem to register touches. Very annoying.

are you using the official screen protector from htc?

This seems to work for some people:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2231832
It should bring up the sensitivity for both the touchscreen and the capacitive keys which are, I presume, less sensitive than the touchscreen itself by design.
I'm not using any screen protector.
I tried the sense keyboard calibration and it had no effect.
The problem seems to be related to how FIRMLY I press the buttons. A light touch often does not register, but a firm touch always does. Never had this problem on my Evo 3D or Evo OG.
so this problem with capacitive home/back buttons is REALLY pissing me off.
went to sprint store, asked to see their display unit, told them the problem i had. guy said "I NOTICED THAT TOO". used their demo unit, EXACT same problem. Talked to some people on IRC who also noticed it.
*really* hope its software-fixable because I love the phone otherwise
I've used adb shell # getevents to see that FREQUENTLY tehre is just no event generated when pressing the home and back buttons. It *is* a hardware problem. I've never been so annoyed, displeased, or disappoined with a phone. I'll be returning it. Even tho the model I saw in the store had the exact same problem. If my next one has same problem I'll give the ol F**K YOU to HTC and not look back.
Also, havent found a way to get software keys on it...which MAY be an acceptable alternative to broken hardware buttons
I had noticed the same problem with a demo unit in one store and so went to check it out in another store where it was fine. I assumed it was specific to the first demo unit. I hope I get a decent phone.
Is anyone experiencing touches being registered slightly off from where you are actually touching the screen? I enabled show touches in dev options, just to make sure, and saw that touches were being registered just slightly lower than where the tip of my fingers were touching.

There is definitely something going on here with the capacitative buttons, as we all see.
However I'm going to give HTC a few weeks and see if they sort it out. Once enough complaints roll in they've got to do something right?

[Q] Screen touches are off target

Is anyone experiencing touches being registered slightly off target from where you are actually touching the screen? When I enable Settings > Developer Options > "Show touches" and "Pointer location", I see that touches register significantly lower and to the right of where the tip of my finger touches the screen. In the screenshot, you can see that the crosshair and circle are not aligning; the white circle appears to be what is actually registered when using the phone.
This seems like a software/kernel issue. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned this yet..it's very annoying!

whoa!! never realise until you mention it.. yea im having that problem too!! im using international version and original made in Taiwan itself.. any custom kernel solve this already??:silly:
I wonder if this is related to the problems people are experiencing using the home key and back key. If touches aren't registering in the right place, surely this could exacerbate an already existing fault with sensitivity of these 'keys'
Currently interchangeably using HTC One, BBZ10 and Note 2
Have you tried using the calibration tool under Settings -> Language & Keyboard -> HTC Sense Input -> Advanced -> Calibration tool? Not sure if this would make a difference in your case.
Apparently touching the screen very lightly while using the calibration tool helps capacitive button sensitivity for some people, as well.

That's not changing anything for me. Are you able to confirm whether or not touches are being registered off-target?
i have the same issue
anyone has an ideo to solve this problem?
I almost think that's how it's supposed to be. It's not putting up an X for you to try and touch, it just showing you where you are touching. Now if it was putting up a target for you to try for and it was off that would be different.

It makes sense if they assume that most people are using it one handed with the right hand. You usually would hit the point you are trying to hit a bit low and to the right. But in other cases, you might not.
It's strange. Where the lines intersect is exactly where I touch, so it knows where I am touching. But the circle is always lower right.
Anyone that has received the 1.29 update try this out? Is it fixed? Ive tested this out on other devices and the circle is always where the lines intersect, not like the One.
Happening on mine, too, I just tested it.
It would be one thing if the system weren't reading the coordinates correctly, but it appears that it is.. it's just registering the action off target. That strikes me more as a software/calibration issue. This explains why I've had a hard time hitting very small links on webpages in Firefox.. I'm touching dead on the link, but it's not registering it there.

I don't get this. We've all been using smart phones long enough to know where we're touching the screen and how to do it properly. They shouldn't be trying to compensate for anything, and I hope there's a function somewhere that allows us to recalibrate or turn whatever this is off, so that it simply registers the actions at the exact point of contact.
Do you have the 1.29 update, or an older version?
1.26.502.10. Stock AT&T. Unlocked & rooted, but not ROMd.
mine register where I touch them( 1.29.401.12), yet I feel I am missing more links in the browser than before (but that might be a browser problem, before I used opera mobile)
Hey guys,
I turned on the two developer options and then used a drawing app to confirm where the touches were being registered. It turns out my touches were registering at the intersection of the two lines (which is where I'm actually touching) instead of the circle. Looks like there's really nothing wrong here, other than the way they are displaying that little circle thingy.

I have tested the phone lot , but I haven't noticed this issue. I am even surprised of the touchscreen. I have never seen such a perfectly visible display. I pressed gently and it reacts as normal.
To people with this problem. Did your last phone is Samsung Galaxy? Or have you ever been a longer Samsung user?
I ask cause I have this problem ONLY on Galaxy phones. When I use HTC , even Wildfire It have superior reactions of the touchscreen.
Yeah, even though it seems off, my touches are registering right at the intersection.

[Q] HP touchpad cyanogenmod touchscreen issues.

I have been having problems lately with my HP touchpad on CM9. They are as follow: the touchscreen goes crazy and does all sorts of random typing and button pressing. At one point I could not use it so I webOS doctored it up and then flashed CM10. So far it fixed the issue but now my corner "back" button only works when you press it on the side closest to the middle. Some other buttons are like this or do not work completely in apps. I don't think it could be a hardware issue as I have always been careful with all of my devices. Thanks in advance!
Can you completely rule out hardware issues by testing your screen using a drawing app?

I will try that now.
Update: Ok please try to work with this: In landscape look at the arrow, the width of the arrow, that entire section is not working from bottom to top. You have to almost tap on the very right edge of the back arrow. I still do not think it is hardware.
Bump, please help
I'm on CM w/android 4.2.2 and have similar screen issues... screen sometimes goes a static non-moving "fuzzy" blue... not sire if ther is any pattern to it or not, but reboot fixes it for a while.
lately I've noticed that ill get artafacts... fpr example todays google doodle viewed using stock android browser app will often produce black a d white horizontal artafacts. perhaps driver issues?

You don't say what Rom you are using but it certainly works on Jcsullins latest.
Evervolv but now i am thinking its an lcd digitzer screen problem cause nothing in that area works regardless of the rom. I never dropped the device so i am not sure why just a section of the lcd screen would stop responding..

Android 4.2.2 notification bar not responding

All,
Would anybody know how to help me with a little problem. Last night, my notification bar has stopped working, just become none responsive completely. The screen is still sensing the touch because it works when using different apps, but I can no longer pull down the notification bar meaning I can not reset any notifications I receive. I have tried switching the phone on and off again, and also did a factory reset but it hasn't made any difference.
The handset I have is an O2 Xperia Z, running Android 4.2.2.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, I am considering heading to my local O2 shop later today.
Thanks

Suggest to try to repair with pc companion first. Select the left hand most option, and then the "repair" option.
I know you say the screen is working, but try testing it to make sure touches are registering on all of the top part of the screen.
Enter *#*#7378423#*#* in the dialler -> Service tests -> Touch screen.

Thanks guys,
I am just charging my handset up to 50% required to try and repair and will give that a go.
In the mean time I have just tried the service test and it appears that in the 6-7mm at the top of the screen there is no sensitivity. However...when on my home screen, there is no response from the status notification bar in that area, yet when I scroll left and right within that area, the home screen is being pulled side to side so there is obviously some kind of happening within that area, just not having any effect on the status bar.
Does this mean it may need a new screen?
Tom
If you screenshot your phone it should come back. That usually works.

Just tried the screenshot but it doesn't clear the problem.

i have some problem, always show the pop up notification has stopped, what should i do ?
has a similar problem recently with my Xperia Z. The lower portion of the screen containing the navigation bar stops responding to touches. I tried service tests and confirmed that on the nav bar area, touches are not registered. So, I guess this is a hardware problem?
My temporary solution is to use "Screen Settings" app and change the screen resolution. I have now a smaller workable screen but at least both my nav bar and task bar works. downside is, I don't have a 16:9 aspect ratio screen anymore. hehe
Anybody?
Oh, and I'm almost sure this is not a software issue as I tried stock rom and custom rom, and on both roms, the lower portion of the touch screen is not responding to touches. so, yes, hardware problem maybe. Anybody else encountered this?
Hello I have the same problem with a notification bar. Do any one manage to resolve it?
Thanks
same here.... need solution...
