Well, the title explains the basic question: What Laptop should I buy for around $700?
To be a little more specific, and hopefully help point out exactly what I'm looking for, here's some extra info:
- I want me Laptop to be sleek and.. "sexy". Something Fat with every corner rounded off is just ugly, and I genuinely care about the physical look of my devices.
-I need good+ battery life. 5 hours minimum.
-A Great Trackpad. The reason I don't have a Laptop is because I sold my old one (Acer Aspire S7) because the Trackpad was TERRIBLE. It ruined the entire Laptop for me.
-1080p screen resolution minimum.
-Prefer touchscreen, but not necessary.
I know more than the average Laptop user when it comes to specs, even though it may not seem like it since I'm here posting this. I'm posting this because I've taken a look at so many Laptops, and reviews, and comparisons, that I simply can't decide which to finally through my money at. I would list specific devices here that I'm currently comparing, but I would honestly be listing about 7-10 Laptops.. so I'm here to look for YOUR specific opinions!
Literally recommend me anything you think it's worth taking a look at, and please to include your personal input and opinions on the device. I'll certainly take a look at anything recommended to me.
$700 is about my budget. If it's really really worth it to spend $800, that can work.
When I finally decide on a Laptop, I'll probably buy it used off ebay because 1. it's cheaper. 2. it works just as fine. Plus.. I've purchases several 2013 model Laptops for about $500, when they're like $1200 on Amazon, but if there's a Laptop you would recommend, and it's from 2013 or 2014 and it's $1200 on Amazon, please recommend it because I can probably find it cheaper!
Well, there's the Asus Zenbook NX500. Good combination of sleek design and great specs. It's an ultrabook.
Hang on, didn't I already comment on this?

hey guys,
I'm going be buying a net book soon, so would like any recommendations. I'm going be looking at net books around 300-450 price range.
first
I would look at asus eepc
next stop would be
msi's line
why not buy a laptop?
for a few quid more get a dvd drive as well!!!
I would recommend MSI, or samsung netbooks.
flyboy
Toshiba would be my recommendation for a laptop
Archos 9 for a tablet
Asus has great netbooks & notebooks!
i have the asus eee 701 and the 1000hd. also i have spent some time on someone elses 901. i would have to say the 1000hd was the best plus really cheap you cant beat the battery life for the price.
It's going be basically using it for web surfing, and i wouldn't be watch movies/burning cd so no point of having a disc driver. Recently my 2,000 dollar laptop broke so don't want to buy an laptop anything soon...
ibm netbooks
Hello all,
Bumping this old thread as I have similar queries and I need some assistants.
So here is my query. Lately I'm having electricity shortage and my desktop pc cannot run longer on batteries and I don't have much money to buy a an normal laptop neither I want bigger screens.
I need an mini laptop with good performance. After researching many of em, I finally came to the following models and so available in my places :
HP Mini 110-3730TU
Asus R051PX
ACER Aspire One Happy 2
so from the above, I have to select one or none if it doesn't suit my nature of usage.
1. Not mainly for gaming but atleast a low end games would be good. i.e GTR 2 – FIA GT Racing Game
2. Web surfing.
3. ROM cooking its my main requirement. Either it would be WM, Android or WP7 cooking.
4. Windows and Linux supported.
If my above requirements aren't possible on atom dual core cpu, please let me know. Also which model I should go for. any other models or brands are also welcome.
I have no idea about these netbooks and how well they perform. so I really need any of your guide lines. Don't wanna waste money where the device isn't worth for my usage.
Thanks...
Best Regards

Well, I wouldn't wait to buy any ultrabook if I had some more money but my budget is limited. Around 300$ USD.
Hello all,
I tried a couple of 10 inch tablets but sold them because they were too big for my needs, I really enjoy the 7 inch form factor. I spend a lot of time on the web and in apps on my phone but it's causing eye strain and I am almost always around WiFi, so I am considering getting a NC. I know by Christmas I'll be wanting one of the new tablets, but with BN offering 135.00 shipped it seems like the NC would be a great stop gap until then. I figure I can even recoup some of the price by selling the NC down the road.
TLR would your recommend the NC as a good tablet today? compared with other 7 inch offerings in the same price range?
Thanks and please excuse the rambling.

While there are "better" tables out there, i.e., front and rear cameras, more memory, faster dual core processors, etc.. All you are going to get in the $135 range is crap. If you do your own due diligence and can live with the NC's limitations you won't find a better bang for your buck.
I agree with MISRy. I don't need the cameras.
If you can live with the no mic, no gps, no camera its a great device.
If you are a geek, its a great toy to play with because of its boot flexibility. Its almost impossible to break it.
There is NO COMPETITION in the range of $135 for 7" tablets.
NC wins hand down.
If you ask for $200-range 7" tablets, then there are few others.
Of course you are likely to get biased opinions here but I agree with the others. For the price and basic use it is a very hard device to beat. Plus you can really learn a lot about Android because it has such an enthusiastic community and it very forgiving of mistakes.
Be forewarned that although you are looking for a simple device at a good price you may develop a healthy case of tinkeritus when you see what the Nook Color can do.
I have a Nexus 7 2012 that I am going to pass that down to my youngest daughter for Xmas and I am thinking about a replacement.
Everything I've read seems to point to this as something that will handle my college school work (CS) and still be able to have some fun with it (games, media, traveling, etc).
The keyboard dock is what elevates this and the only close competitor seems to be the HP Slatebook X2 (as far as I can tell).
My question is, would you buy it NOW, or wait until spring 2015 to see if there is something new that competes with the Transformer TF701 ? Is there even talk of a replacement model??
Thanks!
I am in the same boat. I have owned three prevoius Transformer model. FYI don't the HP tablet, owned it for a week and return it. The TF701 looks attractive with the pricing now

I think it's a good tablet for a lower price yes.
I would not say do not buy it as it is good.
It may not be the best however with what may soon come out, but we'll likely be paying for that, whatever that is(nvidia, octacores, hybrids etc.)
For gaming is very good and as a development device I would say so. It needs more developers.
Although the tegra targeted games are limited and more directed toward the Shield. But it shouldnt matter. Games like Dead Trigger 2, need 4 speed MW show you that its quite capable. I would say if it meets your needs and your on a budget it might make it ideal. :good:

My thought about this device was that it would allow be to still have great screen resolution, still give a lot of flexibility with ports and expansion, and be much smaller/lighter than lugging my aging macbook pro 15" around to school.
What about the KitKat sd card writing issue? I've never unlocked any of my android devices and it sounds like if I get the TF701 that I'm going to have an issue being able to expand the memory. I am hoping to use this in class which means I may need to write to USB keys or sd cards.
It's either this device or a chromebook (and I don't think a chromebook will work for my school work).

I dont see a problem with the microsd card myself.
I dont own a dock so I cant say how well those features are working. I wouldnt think theres too much of an issue.
I would not buy a chromebook myself. I never owned one and would not as it sounds like it is only limited to a web browser and as well having security and privacy issues. I could be wrong.
Could this be a total replacement for a mac or pc? Hard for me to say. Not likely.
There is no touch in the recovery yet. No linux yet afaik. But you can use linux deploy and vnc quite well to it. Not really an issue. I like the HDMI out. Get a proper game controller and its a gaming platform. We'll see what the future holds with Lollipop on the way.
Otherwise I think it has been pretty good. If you can return it and get it at a good price. Might be worth a try.
For what it's worth...

This is the age old dilemma we tech fans face. Do we wait for that next big "shiny" just around the corner. The difficulty is that there will always be something bigger and better just around the corner. And the thing to remember also, as was pointed out by another poster, when it does arrive, it will be at a premium price.
So, for what it's worth, I'd say, if the tablet satisfies your needs now and a little in the future, go ahead and get it now. I had a 700, and migrated to a 701. And for all the little irritating "bumps" with Asus/KK, etc, I'm very happy with my tablet. When the new thing arrives, if you have the cash, and it appeals to you, get that one. In the mean time, you'll be having fun with the 701. If you simply wait, you'll be missing out on a lot of utility/fun.
I loves me my baby. :silly:

That is a good point.
I'm biased and I do like this tablet very much, but at this point in time I probably would think about it more.
They put a lot of power behind those Chromebooks. I'm not so sure why. Supposedly you can dual boot Linux on them. But they some have arm as well as Tegra k1 processors. Hard to say how linux would install and operate on them.
You can always buy one and return it.......so you can have a taste of the ddifference between a nexus tablet and this one.
personally I recommend you buy a nexus 9 or nexus 10, not only because the better user experience(yes it hardly feels like butter smoth on ASUS stock 4.3), but also because of the customer support and quality ensured by Google, Samsung &htc. I went to RMA my TF701t recently and their serve cenTer is full of the smell of bureaucracy, 4 PPL at front desk doing nothing.......leaves me imagining charges after void warranty goes into those ppl's pocket.......so not gonna buy any ASUS product in the future......
The OP mentions he may need to be able to read and write to USB keys and SD cards, for which the TF701 and dock would be much more convenient. None of the Nexus tablets has a card slot, and to read flash drives you'd need to install a third-party file browser and use a USB OTG adaptor.
I'm guessing the lack of news from Asus means that they're giving up on the high end of the tablet market, so there may be no true successor to the TF701.
I think the TF701 is still great feature-wise, but you should try to get a broad-coverage warranty if you buy it! There have been too many users with dock problems, and as others have mentioned you'll void Asus' warranty if you unlock the bootloader to install custom roms.
I have been reading up on the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition and the TF701T. I really would like some advice on helping to decide which way to go. I will list a few questions I have and concerns I have to see if any of you current users can help lead me to a decision.
Thanks in advance.
I know the primary differences between the 2. What I would like to know is has any one had any issues with rooting or putting roms on this? I have a Galaxy S4 and it really made me shy away from Samsung. I will never buy a phone from them that's for sure. Love the power it has and the screen is decent (a little dark) but getting roms on it is a nightmare. I've had a few different Android devices and loved all of them rooting and replacing the roms have been awesome! I just don't want to get one and find out that I'm going to have the same issues I have with my phone now. I realize that phones are different in the respect to the need to have extra protection requested by the phone companies. Thats why I'm reaching out to you to see what your experiences are.
Needs... I need to be able to use a Gumdrop or Otter box case as I have a 2 and 4 year old that will probably be using it at sometime or another. I also need it to have a decent battery life as I will most likely us it for work and play.
Wants... Speed, reliability, durability, Root, Roms, Games, and expand-ability.
I don't care about the stylus so that's not a reason to get this device. I will want a clean rom without all the Samsung garbage that this send with it.
Hope I can get some help with ideas here as I currently have a TF700T and aside from the ram shortage I love it. But time to give that to the kids and get Dad a new tab.
Again thanks for all the incite and opinions.
DrClaw
Have you taken a look at the Samsung Tab S? It has a incredible screen and has better value for money then Note 10.1 IMHO.
This is a really great device.
I don't think feels bulletproof. But maybe that is why its so light. Its kind of like plastic. The TF101 had a more industrial solid state feel like the surface pro.
I doubt this will be over clocked cause it gets warm. It is probably pushing its limits already.
Overall its quite snappy with great performance especially considering its a mobile device.
This is the only android device I know of that features a dock which is like $150 for me which is why I don't have it yet. That would make it feel more complete I guess.
There's no USB 3.0 Port on the tablet. Don't let the ad fool you. If you want that I guess its just with the dock. The tablet part has a micro HDMI port. That's what fooled me cause I thought it was micro USB. But I got the vivo tab extension which is only USB 2.0.
Performance and high resolution and visual quality for games . Not really an issue with rooting it besides potentially having to flush it down the toilet afterwards.
Thanks
Thanks for the advice this gives me more to look in to. I will broaden my horizons to include these 2 tabs. One thing I didn't mention is that I really want the 10" screen so if they don't sport that I'm going elsewhere. I have a smartphone and computer so when I get a new tab it must be 10".
Again Thanks

ASUS and Samsung devices have pretty much the same amount of bloatware, so be prepared to unlock and root whichever you decide for.
If you are a lot into gaming you will get better gaming performance with a 1920x1080 tablet, like the Sony Z2 Tablet, which is a really nice, waterproof, but expensive tablet. Both the Tegra 4 and Snapdragoon 800 isn't always capable to deliver good fps in graphic intense games with the 2560x1600 displays. On the other hand this displays will of course give you a sharper picture when reading or web surfing.
I got my TF701 on a sale out and for the price I paid I think it is a good tablet, especially the prolonged battery life with the keyboard dock, although I have a hard time to get over how cheap it feels compared to my old TF101.
The Samsung Note 10.1 and Tab S 10.5 have one big advantage over the ASUS TF701: they are much more future proof. For an example they have 3 GB ram and 802.11ac wifi. But most important, IMHO, is that they will get an official Lollipop 5.0 update. The TF701 will _probably_ not, since it was not on ASUS list with devices they are going to update. (There is a chance that ASUS haven't decided yet if the TF701 will get the update or not).
The Samsung tablets also have a wider community development support, meaning more custom roms, custom kernels and other tweaks. And having a offical 5.0 update to base custom roms on is a big plus. (There is two versions of the Tab S: Snapdragon vs Exynos, I don't know if there is any difference in community support.)
I have never liked Samsung that much but the Tab S 10.5 is really worth trying out, the OLED display is amazing and it feels small and liteweight compared to the TF701. The Samsung display is also very good in bright conditions or outdoors, while the TF701 have poor brightness.
Still, if you really want a dock with hardware keyboard and external battery and are prepared to not receive any offical updates in the future the TF701 is IMHO a good buy if you can find it really cheap.
again thank you do much for your reply.
I'm going to be researching these tabs over the holiday weekend. Thanks again for all the insight. Just to be more clear games is not the forefront of my purchase. While I will play some games I have a PC gaming rig for that. So just simple games like the ones u aquire on humble bundle.

I dont play games either anymore, but i had to say XCom is one amazing beast of a game and the new enemy within expansion. I just had to get it for the PC because the art and visual quality is just fantastic. Really a classic with replay value. Not sure it takes full advantage of this hardware. :good:
99% decided.
After listening to many different opinions and watching videos I'm pretty settled on getting the Samsung Galaxy S 10.5. It was suggested I broaden my horizons a bit to include this tab in my research and I'm glad I did. The performance is identical to the 2014 but it has an LED screen giving it a brighter screen darker blacks and a crisper image. It also has a ROM that removes KNOX. This was a major concern for me because of the dislikes I have experienced with my S4 Phone. Gumdrop also makes a case for this and doesn't make one for the TF701T. I love their cases and as long as they are in business I will be purchasing them. Unless the TF701T pulls out some crazy feats in the next few days I will be purchasing the Tab S.
Thanks to all who have offered their opinions and considerations. I really appreciate them all. If anyone has any last note please don't hesitate to add to the pile I will consider more options.

Hey Guys,
I'm looking for an Ultrabook without a $1000+ price tag. Ideally, it would be in the $700-$800 range, but I realize this may not be feasible. It needs to be both small, and lightweight, as an Ultrabook should be. Graphics performance isn't an issue, and I'd prefer one without a discrete GPU. The use will mainly be for web design under a Linux distro. Likely an Ubuntu derivative like Linux Mint. I might do some light gaming while on-the-go with older CRPGs, such as Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 under Wine. So far I've looked at these models:
XPS 13 2015 (Broadwell i5) $899 or $999
Asus UX303LA 2015 (Broadwell i5) $849
Asus UX305 (Broadwell Core M) $699
Surface Pro 2 (Refurb, Haswell i5) $~649 w/o Type Cover
Any recommendations? Owners of any of the above?

I actually purchased an Asus UX303LA 2015 two weeks ago off amazon for $850!
I'm super picky with my devices.. there's a lottttt of specifications they need to meet, and I factor in EVERYTHING.
I am in love with this Laptop. I get almost annoying with how specific I can be when pointing out any annoyances, and I truly have none for this device. I purchased it as a general College laptop, I needed solid battery life and I wanted something sleek and well.. sexy. It does everything I need it to do, it's fast, boots up in seconds, games are playable. (Obviously not things like Ultra settings BF4 or anything) Hearthstone was playable just fine, if that helps at all d:
A $850, for a brand new, higher end laptop, this things is worth every penny to me. I'd pay $1,000 for it to be honest!
So, do I have any cons? Yes, but again, I'm picky!
Cons:
-Comes with stickers that when peeled off leave a little sticky stuff, had to clean with Eyeglass cleaner
-Cord is what I would consider justttttt average length, meh d:
-Hard Drive is 90gb usable pretty much, but this really isn't a problem for me.. yet! d; And I think it's easily replaceable.

Right on, man. I got one myself about a week ago, but never updated the thread. Amazing notebook. Lightweight, fast, and great battery life. Perfect form factor for my needs, too. My only real complaint is that there's virtually no Linux support yet. I'm waiting on that, but I'm getting an mSATA drive first to put it on. We've got a half-size mSATA slot on these things but it's a bit tricky, as I understand, to get to the screws under the rubber feet. 128GB half-size mSATA drives are only ~$100 on Amazon
Dont have time to explain, buy XPS 13 2015 (Broadwell i5) $899 or $999
I skipped the XPS 13 due to cost. To get comparable specs to the UX303, I'd have had to pay $999.

The UX303 is an excellent ultrabook. I got to play with one for a few weeks a while back. Very pretty, very powerful. But that was the UX303LN Nvidia GT840M + i7 4th gen edition, not the dressed down IntelHD + i5 edition.
On a side note, your name is bringing on some serious nostalgia. Good grief I miss that game...

Heh, it was a great game, yeah. Can't wait for the new one this year.
I have the UX303LA which is the Intel HD version. Works for me, since I don't play many games on the go, and I have
a desktop for home gaming.
I believe the UX303LN is the Nvidia version. It's a nice one, definitely, though a bit too expensive, for me.
I'd even more recommend the UX305, although it wouldn't meet strict Ultrabook specifications in terms of battery life. But the pros are making up for that: fanless, great body and quality, good display (FHD is more than enough) ...

I was considering it, especially at the price point of $699, but ultimately, it came down to the fact that when i was ordering, Amazon only had the UX303 available. The i5 is a snappier processor as well.
I was looking at a UX305 but these are marginally more $$ here in Aus..
They do look nice though, there were a couple on ebay for ~$1000 AUD which isnt too bad.
