Hey Guys,
I'm looking for an Ultrabook without a $1000+ price tag. Ideally, it would be in the $700-$800 range, but I realize this may not be feasible. It needs to be both small, and lightweight, as an Ultrabook should be. Graphics performance isn't an issue, and I'd prefer one without a discrete GPU. The use will mainly be for web design under a Linux distro. Likely an Ubuntu derivative like Linux Mint. I might do some light gaming while on-the-go with older CRPGs, such as Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 under Wine. So far I've looked at these models:
XPS 13 2015 (Broadwell i5) $899 or $999
Asus UX303LA 2015 (Broadwell i5) $849
Asus UX305 (Broadwell Core M) $699
Surface Pro 2 (Refurb, Haswell i5) $~649 w/o Type Cover
Any recommendations? Owners of any of the above?

I actually purchased an Asus UX303LA 2015 two weeks ago off amazon for $850!
I'm super picky with my devices.. there's a lottttt of specifications they need to meet, and I factor in EVERYTHING.
I am in love with this Laptop. I get almost annoying with how specific I can be when pointing out any annoyances, and I truly have none for this device. I purchased it as a general College laptop, I needed solid battery life and I wanted something sleek and well.. sexy. It does everything I need it to do, it's fast, boots up in seconds, games are playable. (Obviously not things like Ultra settings BF4 or anything) Hearthstone was playable just fine, if that helps at all d:
A $850, for a brand new, higher end laptop, this things is worth every penny to me. I'd pay $1,000 for it to be honest!
So, do I have any cons? Yes, but again, I'm picky!
Cons:
-Comes with stickers that when peeled off leave a little sticky stuff, had to clean with Eyeglass cleaner
-Cord is what I would consider justttttt average length, meh d:
-Hard Drive is 90gb usable pretty much, but this really isn't a problem for me.. yet! d; And I think it's easily replaceable.

Right on, man. I got one myself about a week ago, but never updated the thread. Amazing notebook. Lightweight, fast, and great battery life. Perfect form factor for my needs, too. My only real complaint is that there's virtually no Linux support yet. I'm waiting on that, but I'm getting an mSATA drive first to put it on. We've got a half-size mSATA slot on these things but it's a bit tricky, as I understand, to get to the screws under the rubber feet. 128GB half-size mSATA drives are only ~$100 on Amazon
Dont have time to explain, buy XPS 13 2015 (Broadwell i5) $899 or $999
I skipped the XPS 13 due to cost. To get comparable specs to the UX303, I'd have had to pay $999.

The UX303 is an excellent ultrabook. I got to play with one for a few weeks a while back. Very pretty, very powerful. But that was the UX303LN Nvidia GT840M + i7 4th gen edition, not the dressed down IntelHD + i5 edition.
On a side note, your name is bringing on some serious nostalgia. Good grief I miss that game...

Heh, it was a great game, yeah. Can't wait for the new one this year.
I have the UX303LA which is the Intel HD version. Works for me, since I don't play many games on the go, and I have
a desktop for home gaming.
I believe the UX303LN is the Nvidia version. It's a nice one, definitely, though a bit too expensive, for me.
I'd even more recommend the UX305, although it wouldn't meet strict Ultrabook specifications in terms of battery life. But the pros are making up for that: fanless, great body and quality, good display (FHD is more than enough) ...

I was considering it, especially at the price point of $699, but ultimately, it came down to the fact that when i was ordering, Amazon only had the UX303 available. The i5 is a snappier processor as well.
I was looking at a UX305 but these are marginally more $$ here in Aus..
They do look nice though, there were a couple on ebay for ~$1000 AUD which isnt too bad.

I just sold my laptop last month for a great price and now I'm playing the waiting game until I can get my HP Touchsmart TM2 convertible tablet. I'm dying for an update on a release date, but I'm getting nothing. There is one out already, but it's got the old dual-core. I'm waiting for this baby...

The Fujitsu and Toshiba models seem to be a bit too expensive. Anyone else have any recommendations? I need a real keyboard.
Otherwise, discuss tablet PCs!
I'm completely confizzled.... is this to talk about your dilemma or tablet PC's?

I like the Asus Eee touch pad (4thQ), EP121 is the 12" model & think tehy will have a 10" as well.

I saw a video of the performance and it was a little buggy. Hopefully they will fix that before release...
Taking a look at the specs, they are a bit meh here. I won't lie
I have a dell xt2 and I am itching to find something better for tablet pc options especially because I travel in and out of LA and Chicago in summer and winter (so the sun is a big issue)
I complain and moan and groan about the dell xt2 for a variety of reasons; mostly its dell using old parts (core 2 dual processor and a 5400 rpm hd where the previous model had a 7200 rpm). Dell ram is an arm and a leg, and SSD is so ridiculously priced its not even funny. Dell tech support is full of morons with their head caught so far up their proverbial anus they assume issues are normal.
And despite all of the problems I have with the dell xt2, I think about the tablet pcs now and I realize this is the best I can get for the type of person I am. I'm a clinical psychology student, so a capacitive touch screen is very important. Pressure sensitivity would help in adobe like programs, but it is not necessary. I like having the ability to use my finger to size and resize because I read my ebooks. I can run mac osx, windows, and ubuntu, and I look for further customization granted and nothing can be found. But I realize for now this is the best tablet for me.
I don't need a tablet that can pop off at the top separating keyboard from screen, I need a higher gpu processor so I can render things a bit faster granted. All in all the tablet pc market is a waiting game. The i7 by lenovo is a joke (which is shocking). Maybe hp would be better with a capacitive touch screen and built with thin and portability in mind
edit
I just saw the hp elitebook 2740p
and I am impressed a bit
i7 2.6 ghz
8 gig ram
250 gig hd
2 mp webcam
lightweight like the dell xt
multitouch
However, the bad part is the pricetag is almost 3000 dollars psh no way I'm doing that mess - at least not until I get some cash and sell my dell xt2
Perhaps the only issue I easily see with the tablet is that where is the hp custom suite??? its like nonexistent which is a huge negative especially if its marketed as both a consumer and business tablet. I mean the hp touchsmart theme can be installed but that's not the point. Que sera sera
Well, the HP Touchsmart is supposed to be coming out with an i5. Given that it will be the same form factor for the most part, you can max at 8GB of RAM on 64-bit and 500+GB HD. That should only be $1200-$1350.

wayyyyy too expensive for the features...that's double the price of what HP is expected to have ready in less than 30 days
If it is soley about price Thinkpads are not usualy the way to go, but IMO they are worth every penny. With it you get the best keyboard, the best pointing device (trackpoint/nipple > mouse > touchpad), the best build quality, and with X200 T, the best tablet computer.
If you already have a laptop and are just looking for an auxillory tablet, then something else is in order. But if you want a laptop and a tablet, or just something with the convience of a tablet that still has the full power and utility of a laptop, the X200 T is hard to beat. It is the only tablet which I would consider a "laptop replacement" (it's a laptop in disguise); to me the higher price and extra 1.5 pounds are made up for by this fact.
I do wish Lenovo would shove more powerful hardware into their machines, especily on the GPU side. And honestly one of the biggest draws for me and many other Thinkpad fans is the trackpoint/nipple. Once you get used to it, you can never go back to using a touchpad, and at times it is even difficult to use a regular mouse. I know Dell puts something similar on their business laptops but it is a far ineferior implamentation to the Thinkpads'.
HP Slate looks alright
and it's the normal smartphone price about £350.00 and has a 1.3 Ghz processor!
not to big as well because that was one of apples failure along with the oth half a million because if you want to type with both hand you have to put the flippn' thing down.
wanna get my self a slate
Thanks

I agree with you on the build quality. From what I have seen, Lenovo seems to dominate that market, but I just cannot agree with you with the trackport/nipple. I've logged quite a bit of time with Lenovos and IBMs and I just don't get why they still make that thing. I upgrade my mouse every year and I just can't have anything else. Well, maybe a stylus!
But what I was really looking for is a netbook with touch capabilities that can convert into a slate. I want a real keyboard and I want specs that beat the XPS M140 (Intel M 1.83Ghz, 2GB RAM, 80GB HD) and I want to be ready for touch software coming out later this year. I didn't want to spend more than $1000 either. It seems that the HP Touchsmart is the best (and only) one so far.
IdeaPad S10-3t is garbage. EeePC T101mt is garbage. the S10 blade gets expensive when you want to upgrade to something decent. And the HP Touchsmart Tm2 seems to be perfect, just needs an optical drive.
I have got an hp pavillion tx2650eg which is very fine with its touchscreen. The touch input isn't that good, but the input with the inductive pen is wonderful

I read a while back that Dell was investing in convertible tablets, but I haven't seen anything yet. I'd trust purchasing Dell, but they just don't have anything cost-worthy.
Also, it's always good getting jobs early in the degree process and then working your way up. I apparently make more now in my bachelor's position than others trying to get jobs with their master's degree. If only that degree would finally come in the mail.

And not a day goes by without me Googling "hp touchsmart tm2" for new results...
My MacBook finally met it's tragic end, so it's time to get myself a new laptop. I likely won't be getting another Mac, as a lot of the software I'm using in my classes has me run Windows 7 anyways, not to mention I'd like to not spend $1500. Ideally:
* Build quality. My biggest factor. If the build quality sucks, than I will not buy it.
* Build. Another big factor. I'd like it to have similar height dimensions to my MacBook, so around 1.02 inches tall.
* Good screen, good resolution. Another fairly big factor. It doesn't have to have the BEST screen, but a decent resolution would be great.
* Snappy processor. Speaks for itself.
* Price: $800 is my upper limit.
Thanks guys
Congrats for leaving the forbidden fruit and coming to the7 windows
I have 4 laptops from HP ranging in size from 14-17 inches. All dv series. All have been very good performers and the most I paid for one was 750.00 for the 17in screen.
Intel dualcore processors, 4gb ram, 500gb hard drive, blue ray player.
Hp laptops are garbage , made of the cheapest plastic to be found , and the cool factor is also in the negatives , op needs a Sony and he knows it well , decide whats series ud like and buy it from ebay for better price

On my experience all the contrary, only good experiences with Tosh so I´m loyal to that brand
I have had HP, Dell, Toshiba. HP flat out sucked. It just seemed like an all around horrible buy. Dell is great for work computers and that is it. (IMO)
I currently have a couple different Toshiba's. (Laptops & netbooks) My very first expierence with a Toshiba laptop was when I went overseas for the first time. I bought what at the time was a middle to upper end in store laptop. That laptop made it through extreme heat, sand, etc. It took a flat out beating and still to this day works great. Granted its some years old so it's no longer on the top end but for what it is, and how it still works- WOW.
My personal opinion would be Toshiba but this is because of my expierence. Everyone will have something different to say and I'm sure there is probably different arguements where it comes to the actual hardware.
Good luck!

Decent platform there!
Quad core Phenom II 1.6ghz per core(don't let the clocked rate fool you though, it's pretty speedy for a mobile platform)
4gb of ddr3 1066
ATI Radeon HD 5730 1gb ddr3
500gb sataII(Not sure if it's 5400 rpm, or 7200 rpm)
6-cell lithium Ion battery.
1366x728 resolution, not the highest but it's decent.
That's the one I would go for, but there are others.

Hello all,
I tried a couple of 10 inch tablets but sold them because they were too big for my needs, I really enjoy the 7 inch form factor. I spend a lot of time on the web and in apps on my phone but it's causing eye strain and I am almost always around WiFi, so I am considering getting a NC. I know by Christmas I'll be wanting one of the new tablets, but with BN offering 135.00 shipped it seems like the NC would be a great stop gap until then. I figure I can even recoup some of the price by selling the NC down the road.
TLR would your recommend the NC as a good tablet today? compared with other 7 inch offerings in the same price range?
Thanks and please excuse the rambling.

While there are "better" tables out there, i.e., front and rear cameras, more memory, faster dual core processors, etc.. All you are going to get in the $135 range is crap. If you do your own due diligence and can live with the NC's limitations you won't find a better bang for your buck.
I agree with MISRy. I don't need the cameras.
If you can live with the no mic, no gps, no camera its a great device.
If you are a geek, its a great toy to play with because of its boot flexibility. Its almost impossible to break it.
There is NO COMPETITION in the range of $135 for 7" tablets.
NC wins hand down.
If you ask for $200-range 7" tablets, then there are few others.
Of course you are likely to get biased opinions here but I agree with the others. For the price and basic use it is a very hard device to beat. Plus you can really learn a lot about Android because it has such an enthusiastic community and it very forgiving of mistakes.
Be forewarned that although you are looking for a simple device at a good price you may develop a healthy case of tinkeritus when you see what the Nook Color can do.
I'm thinking of buying a cheap tablet for my parents and cannot figure out if I should keep the TP or switch to a new chinese quad-core tablet or buy another TP.
What I don't like about the TP is that it is getting slow, especially when browsing but even simple things like app menu. I'm on OAT LNT 1222 (4.1.2) so it should be the fastest one around, no overclocking. The case is also starting to crack, I only get about 16h of standby with WiFi on, no GPS (not that I use it) and no HDMI. A bit heavy as well compared to the newer tablets. A nice plus though is the IPS screen and generally good responsiveness on the touchscreen.
I've seen some offers for quad core chinese tablets at around 170-200$ (dx) but the last ones I've seen a year ago were really terrible: crap screen, crap touch, battery life around 3-4h and very laggy. Not to mention the form factor of a brick with fullsize ethernet and usb. Generally not updateable from GB, but that was more than one year ago.
Or maybe I should jump straight to N7? That's already a bit more expensive and I'm pretty happy with the TP. My parents also don't need any other feature than basic browsing and gallery.
If the N7 size is acceptable, have you looked at the HP Slate 7? $170 from HP's website.
Sent from my cm_tenderloin using Xparent Green Tapatalk 2
For basic browsing and gallery, I would definitely stick with the TP. It does those things fine, so given your use case, I personally would think going out and buying something else unnecessary. However, if they plan on doing more with it, I would say N7. It is a little bit more money, but after some poor experiences with Chinese hardware in general I wouldn't buy a Chinese tablet. The $50 differential isn't worth the drop in build quality for me.

I like the tp, if only for the dual booting, webos & android.
AFAIK, the tp doesn't have the hardware for either gps or hdmi.
would also stay away from No Name China Models, yes they are cheaper & seem to have more features yet there is always something that doesn't work properly on these Tablets...go over to 'Tablet Republic' and check out reviews on some of these newer & older models and you will see....just from my short experience with two of these Chinese models i will never go that route again...plus returning one of these if there is a problem is a nightmare.
Personally i would suggest HP of-course & then Asus/ Acer or Samsung.
If it just for your parents I would suggest iPad Mini ( around $300 Now ) in stead of TP. Because what they need is easy to use and a great experience.I think iPad Mini is competent for this. Not suggest TP which is used for "playing" as a toy not just for browsing or reading, right
Just stay away from No Name China Models like sando7 said. Even lots of Chinese would not pay money for that.

How do you figure that OAT LNT 1222 should be the fastest ROM for the TouchPad? Maybe you should try a different ROM. Or start from scratch and re-flash the ROM. That could clean some stuff up. As for a tablet for your parents, like others have said, dont buy a chinese tablet. You wont find much, if any, support for them around here. Probably no ROMs or anything. If you hold out longer, it is rumored that the nexus 7 will drop in price this summer. Probably after Google I/O next week.

Here is the Onda V972 and Antutu benchmark. This is based on the current best chipset that the Chinese tablets seem to utilize (A31).
If you like the iPad mini this is also a good option. Onda V813 and the Antutu benchmark
Onda is the same company that makes Archos and is trying very hard to become a reputable brand (at least among the cheap tabs )
Unfortunately the ROM's are not very well optimized and cause lag and some issues. The foremost example would be poor WiFi performance. The Onda models do not have Bluetooth, and the sound quality is frequently reported to be poor (quiet and crackles).
I intend to get one for testing in the near future, I've never had a Chinese tab before.
a new N7 will probably be announced next week
Basic internet peddling and a few basic games and emails... HP Touchpad all the way.

Current CM9 (latest nightly) and CM10 ( http://goo.im/devs/jcsullins/cmtouc...L-tenderloin-FOR_LIMITED_TESTING_ONLY_CAM.zip ) have MUCH improved standby time.
I'd suggest doing a fresh install of CM10 from the link above ( see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2147284 ) and see
how well it works.
Switch to cyanogenmod immediately! I'm on official 9 nightlys and it's awesome. Don't waste your money.

Chinese Tablets
Iv'e used the TP for quite a long time. I also checked some of the Chinese tablets and bought one (NOVO 7 VENUS).
After i got that, i did not even feel like touching the TP.
Its Quad Core, 1GB DDR3 RAM, 1280x800 IPS screen with ALPS touch control.
Its for 135 bucks.
For that price, this is a must have. Dont buy another TP. Buy this.

What a terrible suggestion! Ainol make terrible tablets, they have no communities and lack cyanogenmod support (unless you use plenty of patches to get the A10 chip working with it) they're too much hassle, feel very cheap, and preform terribly.
HPTP > anything from Ainol
If there is any chinese tablet I would recommend to you, it would be the Hyundai T7. Its has a quad core Samsung exynos processor!
at 1280*800 IPS Screen, a front 0.3mp camera, and a rear 2mp camera. It supports USB OTG. It also out preforms the Nexus 7 in benchmarks. Its only $148.49!

Have you ever checked the Slatedroid forum? Stop talking crap.
Ainol's tablets are one of the best for the price.
If I wanted to buy a 10 inch tablet, I would buy Cube U30GT2. It has quad-core CPU, 2 gigs of memory, high-PPI display, huge battery, cameras, etc, etc, etc. TP is good, but it's outdated.
I've actually been debating this for a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time. Because it is this disdain for 4:3 Android tablets (lol), I've either been looking at Chinese tablets or an iPad. The Chinese tablet that has my eye right now is the Freelander PD800HD, with the high res 9.7" screen, Exynos 5250, 2GB RAM, and 16GB storage. I love my TP but right now, it will either be that or an iPad.

Have you owned one? And this is XDA not slatedroid
I've had my TP for a while now and it still does everything I need it to do really but I've been getting the itch to upgrade here recently. More so after Amazon's trade in offer.
I've looked at a few of the Chinese tablets but none of them seem to have a dev community at all which puts a damper on my enthusiasm. Unless manufacturer updates for these tabs is a bunch quicker than their US mainstream brethren, I don't think I could deal. I like updates too much.
Heck, with the recent price cuts to the B&N Nook HD and HD+ (1080p screen amazingly enough) I may just go that route instead of a high powered Chinese tab.
Hey everyone,
My old N7, which I bought way back when it was brand new, has finally left my service. The system could barely boot anymore, even after F2FS and ParrotMod, nothing could bring life back into it. Once apps started to crash I knew it was time, and have sold it to a friend who wants it for parts.
Is there a good (or honestly, not so good) device that people are switching to? The 2013 N7 is price prohibitive (honestly, $120 - $200 for a 4 year old tablet?) but I'd like something that is in the 7-8" range and can handle HD video decoding. Root and custom roms would be great, but if there's nothing out there then I'll settle. The Neutab N7S Pro doesn't look too bad, and at least I won't be forced to use Amazon's apps, but today is the first I've heard of them, so I'm a bit hesitant.
Thanks for any input!
Didn't find a substitution yet. That's the reason I am trying to keep it running as long as possible. Todays alternatives are either bloated (e.g. Samsung) or do not have current Android versions installed (e.g. Asus Zenpad S8.0, Huawai Media Pad M3) or suffer from technical issues (low RAM, low resolution)... not speaking about updates and security patches
Nowadays it's very difficult to find something like the Nexus 7 provided already 5 years ago.
Edit: regarding the Neutab N7S Pro: are you kidding? The specs are worse than the specs from the Nexus 7 (2012)
Amazon provide some great tabs at great prices... except the ecosystem. also lack of agps. frankly i am not happy with n7 2012 and n7 2013 being again made by asus... i am not sure about the quality either.
my best bet would be take a look at lineage os supported tab so that at least community support is guaranteed
SHEILD K1 by NVIDIA? It's not bad, but it also has it's own kinks and stuff, and is pretty stock too.

Agree! I would buy a SHIELD too. The best 8" tablet IMO
