Is it possible to downgrade boot-loader? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I have a question in regards to downgrading boot-loaders from bootloader-shamu-moto-apq8084-71.08 back to bootloader-shamu-moto-apq8084-71.05
So far I get an error message in fastboot when I try... "moto boot preflash validation failed"
I currently have latest 5.1
Thank you!!

Don't think so.

Personally I think that it makes no sense not being able to downgrade a bootloader on a nexus device...

Yes everything must be 100% stock and at the expected version for an OTA to work.

So if I go back to 5.1 LMY47E by flashing the latest google factory images, you think I will be able to get the OTA's going forward as they become available? Thanks.

Error on update

Updating from 5.0 to 5.0.1 I got a message that said "error" during the reboot and install phase. I had to manually shut down the phone and reboot. After the reboot, I noticed that there was no update available and my phone is still on 5.0. I've only unlocked the bootloader and does with CF. No custom recovery or rom.

You used CF so if you rooted it wont work.
As stated in the other threads, you cannot update if you have root. You need to unroot. The update notification will eventually pop up again,

Same issue - any change to the kernel or system files is going to cause this issue. You need to be completely stock (having the bootloader unlocked is not an issue)
n00b question: I have mine unlocked and rooted; how should I go about getting this update?

Found this thread which walks you through the update process without having to wipe your data. Worked perfectly.

You need to get stock before taking any OTA (bootloader being unlocked doesn't cause any issues with update). You can either download factory images for 5.0 and flash those (skip userdata.img if you don't want to lose data), and then take OTA, OR, do it the easier way - download factory images for 5.0.1 and flash those (skip userdata.img to avoid losing data)

huh? why relock bootloader? And that's not going to fix the issue with the modified system files

[Q] [XT1068] [Stock 4.4.4] Does Rooting and custom recovery break the OTA?!

I have unlocked bootloader, flashed Custom Recovery TWRP to my Moto G2 XT1068 and rooted on 4.4.4 stock, while waiting for the official lollipop updates.
So does this break the OTA, and if so how to enable it again?!
Yes you don't get official Lollipop OTA if you unlock your bootloader. For getting official OTA you have to unroot ur phone and relock the bootloader

Okay, understood. thanks mate
And a few threads along the road you will read:Just do a full unroot and reflash stock recovery, unlocked bootloader is no problem for capturing OTA.
I don't know.....

Rooting didnt affect OTA with my old moto g upgrading from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 and probably wont affect the new moto g too

No. You will receive ota but you can't install it. For root to work, /system has to be modified. The OTA-package will recognize this and refuses to install.

Also not true. OTA does not require a relock. Only unroot and stock-recovery is required.

seems like i cant relock my bootloader, whenever i do all the sequence of flashing the stock rom without the "oem lock begin" everything goes smoothly and i can restore to stock image.
as soon as i put "oem lock begin" i got a error in boot.img:
bootloader preflash validation failed
bootloader invalid signed image
and it doesn't continue...

Maybe the rom currently installed and the rom you try to flash and lock are not the same. Or, at one point you installed a rom that had a version above your current one. There are some partitions that can't be downgraded, like gpt and motoboot (which is the bootloader). Subsequently the lock will fail. Anyway, locking the bootloader is absolutely not necessary. There is no benefit in doing so.

Yeah, i had tried a lot of Roms, so maybe that is why. And now i am on Custom Lollipop Rom (Titan)...
but eventually as you said, its not necessary, so i will just forget about it.
Thanks man.

[Q] Error during update 5.1

I have the problem shown in this video:

Perform a full reset and the error happened again .
Nexus 6(T-Mobile)
Is your phone completely stock? That is: have you ever rooted, flashed a new kernel, custom recovery, and so on?
Since Lollipop you need to have a completely untouched system to install an OTA.
(Unlocking the bootloader does not affect the ability to install an OTA)

Are you rooted? Unencrypted? Modified? All of these will cause OTA to fail.

Revert to Stock for warranty

My gyro quit working and through the diagnostic where you dial *#0*# i get fail or no readings.
I'm running AllianceROM©v8 Lite but I need to roll back to stock. Do I just need to flash the stock 5.0 rom? Or do I need to roll back to KK and do it that way? Thanks in advance:good:

Download the nce downgrade file in the OP. And you'll be unrooted. Remember that ATT will most likely update you to 5.0 after they fix it or they will give you a phone with 5.0 on it most likely. if they replace it.

If they update you to 5.0 you won't be able to root. If they give you a replacement phone with 5.0 on it, you won't be able to root. There is no root for 5.0 right now.

Maybe a bad download? I've used it many times. Just put it in the ap slot using odin 3.09 and it should work. I'm not sure what SW rev check is.

If you want root, DO NOT DO THE OTA. If you don't care about root then ota will be ok. If you want root on 5.0 then use Muniz method in the op of that thread i posted to you.
