Did 5.1 break location based Smart Lock? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since the update to Android 5.1, both the D and E builds, my location based smart lock has been very finicky and rarely works correctly. Prior to 5.1, it was extremely reliable, accurate, and one of my favorite features. Has anyone else noticed this issue since upgrading? Perhaps more importantly, has anyone found a fix or work around to get it working? Thanks in advance.

No, I have the problem on 5.02. Something else is broken, like play services?

I did search and did find anything. Perhaps I didn't use the right search terms. Care to post something useful and link me to the discussion?
EDIT: nevermind, using "trusted places" instead of "location based" did the trick.

[Q] AICP GPS Question

I rooted my H8 and installed AICP (Android Ice Cold Project), but I'm a bit confused. There isn't a toggle for turning GPS on/off. There is an option for "Location", but it doesn't seem to be the same thing. I can set Location to "High Accuracy", but Waze still says there is no GPS.
Can someone help point me in the right direction? Does AICP just not have a GPS toggle? Am I looking in the wrong place?
Thank you!
On AOSP ROMs (at least some of them) "High accuracy" in the Location toggle is indeed GPS, while the other 2 settings (forget what they are called, I think one is Powersave?) are WiFi/cell tower location, and Off (no location services).
Did you check the AICP thread to see if others have had GPS lock issues?
You can also install the app "GPS Status & Toolbox" to see if the phone is at least trying to get a lock (reading any satellites) and just taking a long time, or if not satellites are even being read.
I installed GPS Status & Toolbox, and it says "Looking for GPS Location" even when I have it set to "High Accuracy".
Where would I find the AICP thread? I looked for one, but I'm still pretty new to navigating the forums.
Thank you so much!

By using the search function in the Development forums ("international M8" forum has more ROMs):

Looks like recent nightlies have had some issues (sound, camera), although I don't see a mention of GPS problems.

Do you see any bars on the graph, just below the circle display? When working properly, this will indicate signal strength for each satellite, and some bars will turn green when that satellite is locked. Similarly, a dot with number in gray/orange/green will appear on the circle display to show the relative location of the satellites.
If you see none of this, and those displays are blank, the GPS is not connecting to the app or activated properly (which may be your issue).
Also, make sure you are outdoors, with a clear view of most of the sky. Seems obvious enough, but you'd be surprised at how many folks will post about GPS lock issues, and it ends up they are trying indoors (although you might get a lock indoors, its far from ideal conditions).
Yeah, I have a Release version, not a nightly. (Really need sound! =P )
I like to think I'm quite Google Search Suave, and I can't find any single thing about a GPS problem. =/ Maybe it's just me.

As to the second half of your question... No. It just keeps searching. I noticed it on my way to work this morning, so I was outside and travelling quite a ways. (I stepped outside just to check--still no good.) I've not ever had issues getting the GPS on my phone with the Stock GPS, so I'm inclined to believe it's ROM related.

I'm inclined to think the same (ROM issue). On the stock (or at least Sense) ROMs I can get a lock within a few seconds. Is this your first time trying to use the GPS on this ROM? Maybe try to re-flash with full wipe (data, cache and Dalvik) or try a different AOSP ROM.

Yeah, it is. I just finally got it rooted this weekend, so this morning was like my first full daily run with it. I'll probably just try a different ROM until then. Cyanogenmod isn't on the M8 yet, last I checked... I'll have to look into some alternative ROMs.

I figured out why I didn't see CM11 for the M8--I was using their installation app and the M8 is not supported on it. You have to download the files from their actual website. =P
So, I just realized that this isn't even under the right thread as my phone is on Sprint, not AT&T. :silly: (Can I call upon a moderator to move this to the correct thread, perhaps?)
Hopefully you don't mind trying to help me out anyway. I flashed CM11 onto my phone... and got the same exact problem. I'm learning quite a lot quite fast on how to not brick my phone... =P

I'll report the thread to the mods to move to the proper device subforum.
Did you install the AICP and CM11 versions specific to the Sprint version? Or did those ROMs indicate that the Sprint version was supported? Reason being, the CDMA (Verizon and Sprint) versions of the M8 are actually different hardware from the other (GSM) versions. Flashing a ROM meant for the GSM versions can even brick your phone. Or at least be the cause of your GPS issues.
I would suggest you RUU and start fresh...you may have borked the partitions if AICP is not made for Sprint.

Saw this mentioned by another user: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=55738371&postcount=12331
Seems that Verizon GPS files are needed to make that version's GPS work on ARHD. So maybe a similar issue exists for Sprint on the ROMs you tried?

[Q] Apple Bluetooth Keyboard + Moto X

Hi there,
I believe I'm not the only one who tried to connect a bluetooth keyboard to the moto x. After a lot of research I found that it is just as easy as connecting a bluetooth device. The problem is that the Apple Keyboard doesn't work.
(since it is my first time, xda doesn't allow me to put images, so here are the links
imgur. com/v0Py8CR,5uCefZo
imgur. com/v0Py8CR,5uCefZo#1
Here you can see that the keyboard is seen by the phone, and I can pair it by typing the numbers on the keyboard. But after it is paired, and even though it is checked as input device I get no answer from the keyboard when I try to type.
I'd be really happy if anyone had a solution for this.
this is my first time posting here, so I hope that I am posting in the right section.

Ooh it looks like you might have walked into a hornet's nest, a touchy issue that has been around a while and is yet to be resolved. See here: https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=58202 and here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=62740 and here: http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...ple-bluetooth-keyboard-paired-but-not-working
Be sure to search for a better solution, and I hope someone else can shed some light on the issue, but I see only these options currently:
1) wait for Android 5.0 Lollipop, it might fix the issue. Shouldn't be too long a wait either.
2) if you have root or you can root, you can try using this app, no idea if it does anything: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.heightdev.ganhou&hl=en
3) the answer presented in the stackexchange link i mentioned above. unfortunately the solution there is getting a different version Apple keyboard hardware.
good luck.

Yes, I saw that and it made me really sad. I tried here already knowing about that with hope that someone had a solution.

TLDR: only the 2011 Apple Wireless Keyboard has this problem, and without a solution (until now).

[Q] No GPS fix on Lollipop?

I have upgraded to L using Walter's method. Everything is pretty much good except that I can no longer get a GPS fix in any app I use. I can see plenty of satellites (upwards of 21), but will not get a fix...seemingly ever (I let it try on a 2 hour drive). To clarify, GPS worked quite well on 4.x.
I've tried a few workarounds such as:
GPS settings to get assist data
secret code to rebuild nvm or something like that
turning on and off high accuracy
performed the hardware hack mentioned in the general forum
I haven't tried a factory reset yet, and I'd like to avoid it if possible. Just curious as I've seen this problem detailed for several devices and networks, but no real solutions.
Thanks in advance.

The rooted from post 2. Everything else seems to be good.
Make sure you have oc1 modem. I play ingress and have no GPS issues
There were 2 many reasons why it is very slow to get GPS lock but one problem that I know 100% causes the GPS to lock slowly and not at all because of the aluminium back case that I was using on my galaxy note 3. I tested the GPS status toolbox with back case aluminium and sometimes the GPS lock took long time to fix and sometimes it did not lock at all! But supprisingly, when I remove the back case cover, I don't have that problem anymore. So, check if you have the back case aluminium. Something is interfering with the GPS signal. Now my note 3 is naked without back case but I'm happy this solved the issue. As I said this is one of the problem that caused the GPS lock issue. Perhaps there are more...
Tried everything including factory reset, still no luck
I tried almost everything as OP and did a Factroy reset. Still have the same issue, GPS cant get lock in. It works flawlessly before, start to having this issue after updating to lollipop, dont remember if it happened just after or not.
Is any other possible method to fix this?
Thanks,

Slow loading times on Android 6.0

Hey guys, I had posted a while back saying that for some reason, after flashing the new build of Marshmallow to my Nexus 6, the load times for web pages and just about everything else seems to be a bit slower than usual. I had said at the end of the post that it was fixed, but now the problem is arising again. Is anyone noticing long load times with all apps that use internet? Web pages load slower, the Facebook app takes much longer to load pictures and posts, Skype took longer to login and show everyone's profile pics etc. Never had this problem before on lollipop!
EDIT: Also, when I switch between my 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz WiFi bands, it shows a push notification that says that this WiFi signal has no internet access, and then it connects just fine after a few more seconds. This is odd. Maybe just a buggy first run of Marshmallow?

It's not loading really at all, but that's also due to my LTE coverage being awful in my area, that's always been bad haha so no change there. My other devices in the house are working just fine on my network, the Nexus 6 however seems to load slower, and it's only now that I'm on Android 6.0! Is it working fine for you?
EDIT: Just an update here, hours later, it may be my internet connection, possibly. But I'm not 100% sure on that either. If nobody else is having this issue, it may just be. Like I said though, it seems to be working fine with my other devices!
EDIT 2: http://imgur.com/gallery/TGiCU55 This is a speed test I did on my phone, I have 30Mbps internet and that shows!
I'm having same issue. Dirty flash. Kinda wondering if a clean factory reset is in order.
no issues here....came from a clean flash, which is standard protocol.
M seems fast so far, but I did change my animations Scale from 1.00 to .50! The only website to load very slow is XDA... go figure!

Yup. I did same. I might try the lollipop radio. Idk...
XDA is always sloooooow, even on a fast PC.
I've seen several other people mention slow net speeds on M as well but I've not noticed it yet. The WiFi code of M caused issues awhile back on some previous builds of HellsCore kernel too. I dont know the specifics of it though.

So there was a definite change in the radio for this build then. More than a subtle change. I wonder if it's just not perfect, I realize having a Nexus means getting the first run of all Android software, but I wonder if this is a bug in the build, or a radio that could use some work. But it does sometimes take longer to load things! I'm on very fast WiFi too!

I honestly don't know and would like to hear more specifics. I can tell you I've seen comments on this board the last couple fo days talking about massive WiFi battery drain as well.
I only know HellsCore adopted the newer M code for WiFi in his kernel and people were affected. He then had to create two builds of the kernel. One with newer WiFi code that didn't cause any issues for people and another build with the older WiFi code from L. Have you checked his G+ site?

No I haven't! I'll check that out! So that leads me to believe that it was a change in the new radio! He had to change it to code used in L radio so that may be it! Thanks for the info! I'll look into that some more!

Hey dude, well honestly it didn't seem to fix it. Placebo effect lol What I think it comes down to is just Marshmallow being rough around the edges at this point because I have stock rooted Marshmallow 6.0 on my Nexus 6 and have cyanogenmod 12.1 installed as a secondary ROM, When booted into cyanogenmod, pages load much faster and it's more responsive as far as I can tell! So, it must be a bug with Marshmallow! Keep in mind cyanogenmod 12.1 uses Android 5.1.1 as a base!

Am I the Only One with Trouble Tethering After Switch from Nougat to Oreo or Pie?

Tether was working fine on Nougat, after adjusting Windows with TTL, a changed user-agent, etc., and then in Android adding the "dun" parameter to my APN, but with any Oreo or Pie ROM, it gets incredibly slow, as if I do not have "dun" in my APN, even when using ROMs that allow "dun" in APN.
I'd really like to upgrade from Nougat, but don't want to give up tether.
Has anyone else faced this issue and prevailed?
EDIT:
I flashed OOS Oreo, tried what settings I could with no good results, then flashed 4.5.1 firmware and modem into it to see if older firmware was the solution, tried what settings I could to no avail.
Back on Nougat now, which does the job just fine.
Alas however, I may never be able to buy a new phone, unless Nougat can be installed onto it.
You're certainly not the only one. Tethering support is getting harder as carriers find ways of making it more restricted. There are ROMs and Devs that have worked on it with mixed results. It's possible with enough leg work you might get it working on a particular ROM, if you can get the dev to work with you on it. Otherwise it's luck of the draw whether you can find a ROM that will work in your particular case.
Telephony is getting complicated and there are more people concerned with VoLTE and the like. Look what a mess that still is on custom ROMs.
Does anyone know of any ROMs where this is actively being fixed? That is, one can tether without degradation, as one used to be able to do in Nougat? Tethering works, it's just horribly slow.

NLOS is your best bet. If it's not working already the dev is willing to work with users to resolve issues.
Here's an example of Tethering restrictions getting worse, with Google leading the charge:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/9r6r13/tether_dun_required_no_longer_works_on_pixel_3_xl/
I'm surprised Google don't get whiplash in their haste to bow to pressure from US Carriers.

I'm surprised Google don't get whiplash in their haste to bow to pressure from US Carriers.

Thank you @Dirk, and agreed--I'm surprised google doesn't get backlash--maybe not enough people tether?
Also surprised that more devs didn't just immediately address that--maybe not enough devs tether?
I may try NLOS, or the Magisk module--it might work.
Does anyone using NLOS know if tether works properly? I will ask in that thread also.
