1. What is the difference between a hard and soft reset? As far as I know, a soft resets is done through the backup and restore feature in Options while a hard reset is done through the recovery menu. Does a soft reset only reset options and delete data while a hard reset wipes the phone and then reinstalls everything again?
2. Is it possible to do a hard reset without going into the recovery menu which I think the phone has to be rooted before access is available?
3. Can I do a hard reset with the Companion software?
4. When the phone was new, calls through the speaker phone were loud. Now even at max volume is can barely hear when in a car. I've read that a hard reset fixes this. Is this true?
One more question...
If I do a software "repair" or reinstall the OS using PC Companion, does it always install the latest version of the OS available for the phone or does it install 4.4.4 regardless? Meaning, if 5.0 is finally officially released for the phone, would wiping/repairing or reinstalling the OS result in PC Companion installing 5.0 or would it still install 4.4.4 (since that is what the phone launched with)?

If you repair via PC Companion, it will stay on the OS version it currently runs. Repair on 4.4.4 will keep 4.4.4 and 5.0.2 will keep 5.0.2.
For calls use this combo of settings

Soft reset means it will wipe data, keep current OS version.
Hard Reset means it will wipe data and bring the phone to its initial OS. As far as i know, pc companion "repairs" are soft resets. Because that's what repairing is supposed to do. It's supposed to fix current problems, so 5.0.2 will stay on 5.0.2

Thanks.
I did some reading/researching and it seems the the repair feature of PC Companion actually replaces/reinstalls the operating system. Here is an old guide for the "repair" feature:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504809
Well I tried the "repair" feature on PC Companion. It downloaded the latest software and reinstalled everything from scratch. It booted up like a new phone (even with apps I hadn't seen before). I guess it does wipe and reinstall everything.
Yes but did the firmware version change? Or are you on the same firmware as you were before?

Actually, I first updated the phone to 5.0.2 with PC Companion from 4.4.4. The update changed the firmware version. While installing, there was a point where the phone displayed "Optimizing apps" and went through 300 or so of them. Then, I tried the "repair" function of PC Companion. It performed a similar install process but when I booted it up, it was like a new phone (along with the "rituals" that you have to do when you turn on a new phone for the first time) along with apps I hadn't seen before. This time there was no "Optimizing apps" during the install/repair. Obviously, the firmware stayed the same because there is no new version currently available. Pretty sure that the repair function reinstalls everything vs. resetting everything.

which one! I asked if you repaired or restored a backup.....
If you repair the phone it should be exactly like a factory shipped phone.
My only other thing to say will be have you got anything in your sd card (Both internal or external) that may be causing this? Any init.d scripts that reduce voltage etc...try deleting the contents of the sdcards and repairing again. (Obviously back anything up you want to keep)

i did repaired twice from PC companion and did once i think from the phone itself, and i don't have Scards its only the phone internal storge..
when i did it first in flash tool it didn't give me any error and then i did repaired it twice from pc companion however whats strange in ICS i never had the reboot problem
and if i remember correctly it only delete the programs etc, but the photos/music etc it never left the phone with both options i did...
so you suggesting to also wipe internal storage and repair to see if it reboot or not? i already have back up for all stuff so it won't hurt to try
thanks alot really for helping and sorry for my bad english ^^;
If you have a backup then try it.
Have you got a bootloop or do you have some reboots? What i mean is, does the phone actually boot up and only reboot occasionally or is it just bootlooping?

Hi,
I bought Xperia Z a week ago and there was update available, I tried to update it, but the phone stuck in boot loop, I solved this via Sony Update Service. So there is new and actual software. It works fine, until the first charge, the charging was ok, but after unplugging I tried to resolve lock gesture, but it stuck and restarts, the restart repeat several times. And after every charging, there are frome three to five restarts and then the phone is available to using.
Unfortunately, the Backup and restore app is not working, it stuck at 8% and then the phone restarts. So I decided to use SUS again, but it doesn't helped. The restarts are still there, no matter if original or non-original charger, so there is no connection to used/downloaded apps.
Is there any help to this issue?
I don't rooted the phone, but the phone is bought as used from credible store.
Thanx for answers
FW: 10.1.1.A.1.253
I'd suggest to restore the phone to factory default and return it to the store. It could be a hardware issue, that the phone receives a to high voltage when removing it from the charger.

for several times after restart?
bump
when I charge the phone to 80%, not full, and then unplug, the phone doesn't restart
Something defiantly seems off. It should not restart. Loke other suggestion it try a factory reset, if that doesn't work u might need to contact Sony for exchange or repair.

try option 2 if option 1 fails
option 1: Repair through Sony Update Service followed by a Factory Reset under settings > backup & resets. (Internal Wipe)
option 2: Flash another FTF file
but then again, it seems like a hardware issue. Suggest you get an exchange if its still under warranty or whatever.

if you bought the phone just a week ago, then why dont you ask your phone-company to resolve the issue. Phone-company is your retailer and from where you purchased the phone.
Why to take risks at your side....

op 1- when it says that your phone is up to date there should but a blue line of words saying something repair your phone if you are having issues, just click on that.
op 2- android development section and some in the general section too.
like i said if you seriously dont want to go through all that hassle just take it back to the shop and ask for a new one and show them that youre pissed off and demand for an exchange or something. Show them how it restarts lol.

2 - maybe I have no balls for this...
so, I will claim my warranty for this
thanx for answers guys
LitoNi - so the op1 helped, the problem was in micro SD card, after repair the SD card is dead, but the phone is working well, no restart since the repair (three days), even the connection between phone and linux (MTP) is ok and I can move with files...thanx
Hey everyone,
I've been eyeing this forum ever since I got my XZ, two months ago. I decided to root a few days ago (that Kingo one click program) and tried to improve my phone a bit everyday.
Today, I tried to hide the navbar by adding that line at the bottom of build.prop. I edited the file with QuikOffice but when I wanted to save, I couldn't simply replace the one there so I saved it somewhere else and copy/pasted it in place of the old one. I shut down the phone and when I tried to turn it on again : bootloop. I don't know how an extra line could mess the phone this much but I'm wondering if I haven't modified some other line without knowing it.
I read that using flashtool was an option so I downloaded an installed SEUS and then Flashtool (EMMA). I connected the phone following the instructions (volume down button) but I got a "Locked phone error". I haven't done much after rooting, especially not setting up a recovery or unlocking the bootloader.
Can anyone guide me through this ? I read things about using an update.zip file but have no idea how that works. I also don't have access to the original build.prop. I've also read people who espaced a bootloop without losing data. But the "locked phone" part doesn't seem to be common. As for the Sony Update Service, it just tells me that the phone already has the last "software version" and that's it.
Thanks.
hm, can you download sony pc companion and try? I used it yesterday and there is a service tab where you can fix and download updates etc. Maybe there is a reinstall firmware or some such

Thank but PC Companion offered to repair the device but at the cost of all data.
I was able to solve the issue and keep my data by flashing a stock ROM using the actual Flashtool and not Emma. I'm not running CM10.2 and everything is looking great .
Hello, XDA community,
Since I couldn't find a thread here discussing this problem, I'm starting one now.
Everytime I start up my phone or whenever it runs out of RAM and tries restarting background services/apps, the "First Time Start" application reappears in the taskbar (it actually is com.sonyericsson.startupflagservice) and then the screen opens up the "Check Fail" screen (image attached). Tried looking at ADB logcat at boot, nothing useful (will try again soon). This problem began occuring since Jan 22, when I first started my phone. The phone is not rooted nor messed with (bootloader still locked). Contacted Sony for that, they suggested the obvious and costly solution, to bring it to them so they could examine and fix it, but is there a manual fix? I want to know exactly what is causing the problem and be able to fix it for myself only, since this phone isn't that popular where I live. I have nothing against Sony fixing it, but most probably they won't even explain what caused it (and it happens for me to be a curious person). The phone is bought at RDE.lt , which is a general tech shop, not a phone vendor, and thus no warranty is given.
To be honest, I would fix this by reflashing the phone, either reflash the current firmware (Country and provider the exact same as before)
Or flash a new firmware which is not buggy. It is known that firmwares are not the same as some of them are buggy mess.

Tried reflashing through Sony PC Companion, no go. If I try FTF flasher, is unlocked bootloader a must? I have flashed ROMs before on Huawei u8160, Sony Xperia X10 mini e10i and Xperia Go st27i, but most of them were custom, so I'm unsure if I have to unlock it now.

Download a firmware from XperiFirm
And flash it with Flashtool
It does not require an unlocked bootloader as it is not a custom ROM
Solution
Hey guys. I got the same problem on 20.1.A.2.13, tried to flash the 20.1.A.2.19 twice, tried factory reset but nothing happened, after starting the phone I always got the Check fail message. The problem is caused by the Startup Flag Service 2 (com.sonyericsson.startupflagservice), but I got a solution for the problem. Because it always shows up after the systemboot, we simply just have to prevent it from running at startup.
I used SD Maid (Pro or simple version doesn't matter). Go to App Control, than type in the search box: "startup", tap on it. Tap on Toggle Autostart Components. After that switch the On to Off and reboot the phone. Thats all
Hello, im having the same error. I have installed sd maid. I have searched startup and clicked on it however there is no toggle autostart components option.

Hello all
I hope you can help me!
I have had my Z3C since November and therefore I have made many updates on it and it now has 5.1.1 running.
It's not rooted and therefore I will be using pc companion.
My question is: I am having some problems with the icons being too bright when I turn on the phone from standby - and some would say it's also about time I made a factoryreset on my phone - and I therefore would like to try if resetting it could solve this problem.
My plan is to make a backup of the phones data using PC companion, then make a factoryreset of my Z3C and then restore the phone's data again using pc companion...
But will this bring back the problems, that might be on the phone now or will the Android software just restore/reset/fix it self (or what ever the reason for resetting is) and then afterwards not be able to go back to the faulty software...?
I hope you understand my question and will help me...
