Suffering extreme lag with the Moto G 2nd gen - G 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So late last year when I was shopping for off contract cell phones, I had the opportunity to use the Moto G 4G for about a week, and positively loved it. I had already had the OnePlus One and was really impressed to see the G perform comparably - sure, the camera was very mediocre, but even with its 1 GB of RAM, it still ran pretty much everything I threw at it with very little lag.
Once Christmas came around, I got my wife the Moto G 2nd gen (since it has a better camera), and have found the performance to not be anywhere near as good as the previous model. Things like using Facebook Messenger will take literally 5 full seconds to open up a chat window, her keyboard freezes up while she's trying to type, web pages just won't load in Chrome, etc., etc.
I used most of these applications myself when I had the first Moto G, and I didn't experience any of those problems.
Has anyone had similar issues? Is it a matter of the kernel just not being as good as the 1st gen 4G version or might there be something else I'm missing?

For me, everything works perfect. I'm on Stock 5.0.2 with root. I've uninstalled several Apps which are running in the background.
Do you have KitKat or Lollipop?
Maybe a Factory Reset will help you.

Moto X (LG G2) or N5?

I _REALLY_ want Nexus 5, but yet again I'm on Verizon, so I'm not sure _WHEN_ and/or _IF_ it'll happen.
So realistically speaking I'm looking at plan "B", which is as you've guessed it's MotoX (or LG G2), right now I'm using Galaxy Nexus (GNEX) and I gotta say I love it, BUT there are some drawbacks on that phone which is killing me..
battery
battery on my phone is a joke, it really is! my phone on average day would last me maybe a little over 1 hour of display time, maybe 1:30 if I get lucky and phone itself roughly half a day maybe a little bit more, but not entire day for sure, 'till the end of the day i'd end up switching battery for sure( (at least i can change battery)
speed
chrome browser is "forget about it", it takes easily about half a minute to open a chrome and type in google.com and wait for a page to load, but if I start using Google search with mic and all and then it'll open chrome browser then wait time significanly increases of typing or loading any pages. last google hangout, i can have no other apps in recent apps yet it'd still feel sluggish, gmail? "eh, so so", you get the drift..
os
i gotta say, this is main aspect of the phone that I _LOVE_, and that's why I really wish to put my hands on next Nexus 5, since Nexus 4 was so conveniently forgotten about Verizon otherwise as I said I _REALLY_ like new Moto X and considering getting that phone my other options is LG G2 which is yet again very close to Nexus 5 and in my opinion is biggest drawback is software, so I'd end up going AOSP ( CM , AOKP , Paranoidandroid ), so primarily I'd go there for hardware).
So, I'd like to ask existing Moto X owners about their thoughts and their input on this subject if you please.
Moto X worth a try

Try Moto X, it's really different.
1. Motorola H/W is always perfect.
2. Moto X design and grip is unique.
3. Toucheless control is very practical and changes the rules.
4. Firing up the camera by just shacking the phone is new.
5. Moto X as per the AD it always monitors the situation which you're in, driving, in a meeting, sleeping or even if it's in your pocket.
6. Active display is awesome.
I'm enjoying using it.
I came from the GNex (also a Verizon issue) and the Moto X really is a thousand times better. The battery life, the speed (pretty much 0 lag unless you're downloading all your apps from the playstore at the same time), the design... it's a wonderful device. To me, it's the best device on Verizon. The Moto X features like the Active Notifications and the Assist while driving (reading your text messages aloud) are huge plusses.
I totally recommend the Moto X but it also depends on your preferences. The form factor is actually smaller than the GNex despite the screen being ever so slightly bigger, but you might prefer a larger screen. The camera is average (they're probably going to start sending out the camera update to certain users starting next week which should improve the camera some but I'm not sure it'll be GS4/iPhone good). There isn't much in the way of a development community. You can easily root but there aren't any roms. Rooting gives you the ability to install Xposed Framework Mods which do allow you to customize a lot on the device although I've found that it increases the lag a bit (nothing major but I just recently unrooted and went totally stock so I could be apart of the soak test and my device is noticebaly faser without the mods installed). This also means that when 4.4 comes out, us Moto X users will probably be waiting a while for it, at least in comparison to our Nexus brethren. I don't care now because 4.3 isn't really a huge upgrade over 4.2.2 but 4.4 sure looks pretty.
If you're going to stay on Verizon, the Nexus 5 probably isn't going to be an option for you anyway so of the options you mentioned it'll be down to the Moto X or the LG G2. I prefer the Moto X but if you really want a huge screen and the aforementioned Moto X features don't appeal to you, than the G2 might be a better option.
Droid ultra or Maxx. Basically a moto x with a bigger screen Maxx also has more battery
one of my main concern is updates going forward 4.4/5.0/etc, is there a hope for that (being it's Motorola/Google phone)?.
ability to unlock/root it as well, is there a lot bloatware on it?
is there a big difference by going developer edition? (i'm not a developer but I am power user though (or at least aiming to be))

Help me make a smart decision

Hello
Im finally upgrading from a htc explorer( while being small i loved how my battery could last me 3 to 4 days easy) i've kept it for 3 years with custom roms and was enough for me up until recently when i had to start using other apps like skype, viber and facebook as a form of communication.
I'm looking for a 300€ or less smartphone that will last me 2 years a least and ended up with two deals that i found to be under the current price market:
a moto x first gen new for 250 or a google nexus 5 new for 289
as i see the nexus is a little bit stronger on paper and probably would get outdated way after the moto x
but the moto x is cheaper and does have a nice set of perks like better battery life, ergonomics and that motorola notification thingy, my only set back was reading about the display getting burned after months of use and the gossip that motorola by now being owned by lenovo would stop getting updates after lollipop or at least as quick
I would appreciate your input on this matter especially if you have both, If i have to read another review on these phone i rather gouge out my eyes
I dont really care about the camera, im more interested in a daily driver that can mutlitask some apps and if possible be up to date in at least a year or 2.
Thanks in advance

I don't know if I can help, but If I had the choice I think I would have gone with Nexus 5 for the sole purpose of having long lasting developer support. Nexus 6 is too big, but I am tied to Verizon, and went with Moto X 2013 Dev edition for 200 on amazon. I. Love. This. Phone. I don't think I would be happy going to a phone without all the moto apps baked in/moto phone moving forward... *shrugs*
What ever you do, take your needs, and then wants. And then make the choice, Lot's of choices with Nexus 5, Lot's of out of the box awesome with Moto X.:good:
If you want timely updates for the next two years and great long lasting developer support go for the nexus 5.
However the moto x is very unique because the out-of-the-box experience is fantastic, the motorola features are great and battery is good (way better than the nexus 5 if I'm not mistaken). Also, I've read this over and over and experienced it myself : it kind of eliminates the desire for custom roms (because stock is so great). So if you want to tweak the rom just stick xposed with gravitybox on it and you're good to go. All we need to wait for here is xposed compatibility for lollipop and we're set (of course everyone's waiting for the official lollipop update most importantly, but it's bound to happen!).
In my opinion the only downside to the moto x is that it will stop getting updates before the nexus 5. Hopefully we'll still have an active developing community when that happens!
So all in all, the way I see it is that it depends on if you value updates over user experience, or the other way around. If it were my choice I would go for the moto x!
I wouldn't expect another 2 years worth of updates for either device. I'd base my decision on size as long as you're only considering the developer edition Moto X.

I currently own Moto X and used my friend's Nexus 5 quite alot. Let me tell you pro's of both.
Moto X
1 ) Ideal size and display screen.
2) Good build quality and feel.
3) Very good speakers and earpiece.
4) Lag free, very good for day to day tasks
5) Good battery timings.
Nexus 5
1) Much better software support and development.
2) 1080p screen vs Moto X 720p screen.
3) Better hardware.
4) Better video quality with OIS.
My reply,

Having owned a N5 I would say don't do it!
Honestly there isn't anything much better on the N5. Sure processor and screen quality are spec'd better but they also consume more battery. The N5 has a tiny battery...only 100mA more than the X.
The X has awesome daily usability. The active display is a great way to see ALL your new messages and notifications. The speaker sounds more clear and less tingy than the N5. Earphone output is great when listening to music. The battery lasts all day with 3-5 screen hours.
Also in my experience there are two different LCD panels being used in the N5. My friends screen was more cooler and blue. I unfortunately had a warm panel. But that's a user preference thing.
You can't go wrong with the X. Also after the updates to KitKat. The camera is actually pretty damn good. You have to use the google camera app though.
You can't go wrong with the X. I've had mine for two weeks and don't see myself upgrading until 2016.
I wouldn't even consider the second gen. The dimensions of the first X is beauty in the hands.
My post is allover the place but it is basically praising the X and saying the N5 isn't all that great.

in short for that kind of money get an lg g2

Performance Improvement on ROMs

I am coming from the Moto X first generation, with a brief stopover at the Moto X 2nd generation. I found the performance of the 2nd Gen X to be fantastic of course, and am not comparing the G to it, but rather to the 1st Gen Moto X.
I found that the 2nd Gen X caused me wrist pain within a few seconds of using it. After some testing, I found that a 5" phone was about the biggest I could handle. Went back to the 1st Gen X for a month, then my daughter broke her phone and I had to pass my X on to her. Picked up the 2nd Gen G at Best Buy since my Dad raves about it.
After about 48 hours, I am trying to decide whether to return the G, and spend a bit more getting a Nexus 5 or an unlocked Galaxy Alpha, mostly due to performance.
My question, now that I have given the long winded sob story... Is - - Are folks seeing a noticeable performance increase when using a custom optimized ROM, vs stock? Obviously there is always some, but do you feel the device is smooth overall and worth keeping (in reality, not benchmarks) ? Would you keep yours if you had the option to return it for a full refund?
Part of why I went with the G was the Moto apps, which don't really do what I need on the G anyway (chrome extension for connect, drive mode voice replies on assist) so I am open to switching, but would certainly rather keep it if there's a chance it can live up to it's potential.

Question 1
Yes, a very noticeable improvement on CM12.1 over Motorola Stock 5.02
Question 2
Yes, the device is a lot, lot, lot smoother on CM12.1. I don't play games, so I don't know how it would perform, but I can say that the budget priced Moto G 2014, performs equally if not better than other high priced devices that come with Snapdragons 8xx and 2GB-3GB of RAM, I speak from experience.
Question 3
Yes, I would keep it even in the case of a full refund. As I see it Moto G 2014 has the best value for money. In its cost range I could only find Chinese phones that come with an MTK Soc that has severe problems with GPS, I speak from experience. The GPS on Moto G 2014 "flies", it locks in under 3secs indoors.
It can be smoother than stock if you install a custom ROM + Spirit Kernel.
Right now I'm using Luk's AOSP and Spirit... The only one combo I found to be really better than stock and CM

Do you regret purchasing Moto G 2014?

So I bought an XT1068 on Jan 2015, for its dual SIM capabilities, the AOSP like firmware, the capability of rooting and the availability of custom ROMs. I have to say I am pretty disappointed and I wouldn't buy it again.
The stock 5.0.2 ROM is unusable for me. Lag is awful when a few apps get installed, Bluetooth audio (that I use when I am at work listening to music) breaks all the time, when Chrome is launched everything else gets killed and I could go on and on.
CM12/CM12.1 did a lot to improve the experience, Bluetooth music works fine, lag is limited (without Chrome) etc. Yet CM had many bugs at the beginning that had to do with core function of the phone such as the screen not lighting up during a phone call and had to reboot, the inability for the call receiver to hear me etc.
Although CM improved the experience by a wide margin that's the CM's team achievement not the manufacturer's.
The device has an inherent flaw, very little RAM that severely curtails multitasking as Google component's and 3rd party apps are getting heavier and heavier.
So if were looking for a dual SIM under 200€ I'd purchased one that meets the following criteria:
• Snapdragon SoC
• 5 inch minimum
• Dual SIM
• Rootable
• 2GB RAM
• A usable Stock ROM
• Availability of custom ROMs (optional)
Since Jan 2015 when Ι purchased Moto G 2014, several Chinese phones came across my hands (Lenovo, Xiaomi, Cubot, Meizu, Doogee) and sort of checked them. Although I didn’t use them myself the people that did said good things about them as far as multitasking is concerned when I played with them they surpassed Moto G 2014 by a distance. The one thing that put me off in January going the "China way" was the MediaTek SoC that have on them with their awful GPS (speaking from experience)
I care but not that much about updates as I care about stability, multitasking, multimedia and navigation.
One great thing I can say about Moto G 2014 is its GPS whether on stock or CM. Always reliable and accurate, even in doors.
Though a year has not passed since I purchased the Moto G 2014, I am sadly looking for a replacement. I am so disappointed with the stock 5.0.2 that I am seriously considering not purchasing a Motorola device ever again (even if there is the CM option, a manufacturer should ship its device with a usable ROM).
I'ts time to check if a budget device meets my criteria above (if I exclude the Snapdragon one the list is pretty big)
Motorola, in my point of view, is one of the best manufacturers when looking for a nearly stock android experience, so no doubt in that.
Yes, the Moto G 2015 is out for several months now. No it's not worth the upgrade, you lose the stereo speakers and the performance difference is not that significant. You can get the best out of your 2014 installing simply a custom ROM like the unofficial CM 13 (6.0) which is a great ROM even though it's in Alpha stage.
If you want to give Motorola another shot and want to spend something like 300 dollars, you could buy the Moto X 2014 or for 400 dollars the Moto X Pure.
@thdervenis get oneplus x

I don't regret buying this phone at all. (Got XT1068)
I was looking for a smooth, Aosp'ish stock rom with a community behind it and cheap phone.
Basically all i wanted +extra features like stereo speakers and OTA's.
Even though Moto G 2015 is out, nearly nothing changes. Both phones will get 6.0.
Well, i bought this device december 2014, after 5.0.2 update the phone was rubbish, CM 12.1 helped allot, but the 1 gb of ram has limitations... about a month ago i gave my father my xt1068 and bought myself a LG G Flex 2 for less than 300 euro, if you live in the US you can buy this phone brand new for 250$ unlocked from ebay, in my opinion is the best bang for your buck... better choice than the one plus x in my opinion, lg did a good job with the 5.1.1 update and fix all the heating problem with the SD810 and its going to recive 6.0
No regrets at all. It's perhaps the best phone I've had, including the Skyrocket I had before it. You should realize that a mid-range phone is just that; it's just a basic phone for the average user with a few extra features. However, seeing how quickly smartphone technology is progressing, our phone could be seen as a low-end device at this point.
You can't really expect high-end performance from a phone released a year ago and is under $200.
If price isn't an issue, look at some high-end models.
To be honest that's the first device of mine I didn't regret. It taught me a lot of new stuff, made me into CM + it's enough for my usage.
I guess it doesn't take a lot to please me. I'm coming from a nexus 4. For a budget phone this phone is spectacular. I have minimal OS 5.1.1 with halogen kernel and I've had no problems nor any regrets whatsoever. I'm the only one at my job to get 3G or any signal at all. I really don't know what else a person expect out of a phone, my GPS is great, the audio is awesome with faux sound control, and pictures and videos are just great. Popping a 64 gigabyte micro SD and you're good to go. So, needless to say I'll be keeping this phone for another year or two!
Yes, Play Services and Play Store are undoubtedly hogs. But when running BRNmod, or a custom ROM with MicroG and Xposed, I find the Moto G is still fine as a general day-to-day workhorse. I don't find it wanting for RAM, but I don't run a great deal in the background (Greenify, Tasker, Pushbullet, Minima Pro, AOSP keyboard and a few other services managed with Tasker and the Greenify plugin). I have Play Store installed, but have Tasker disable the package when it leaves the foreground. Auto-update of apps is done overnight via Tasker and simulated user input, after which Play Store is disabled again.

Switched to the 2014 Moto X and feel like I want to switch back to the original

I've had the 2013 Moto X for over a year and I love it. I love everything about it and can't find a single fault except for those that come from age. Things like it still runs KitKat 4.4.4, using it as a flashlight often causes it to reboot, and some apps and websites that weren't very snappy last year are getting aggravatingly slow now. It's a Dev Edition and it's fully unlocked so I could install Cyanogen or NX-ROM to fix some issues. But I've tried them and they seriously reduce the sensitivity of Active Display, which is my most favorite feature of the phone. Can't mess that up.
So I got a 2014 Moto X on Swappa for $110. It's a Pure edition so it's also 32GB and fully unlocked like my 2013 X. I thought perhaps the size increase wouldn't bother me so much, but it kinda does. I thought having a 1080 screen would be an acceptable trade-off for the increased size, but it's not. It's kinda nice that things on the screen are bigger, but I'm not even close to being visually impaired so text size was never an issue. In fact, I kinda feel like the screen is big enough that other people can easily see what I'm looking at. And maybe I don't want them to see that my big ol' biker self is watching funny kitten videos on YouTube, you know? And then today the battery died well before I went to bed. And I'm like, WTF. I've never, EVER had my 2013 Moto X battery die. I've had it down to 3%, but it never died on me. My 2014 Moto X putzed out at only 11pm today. My day lasts till 4am. I only took it off the charger at 3pm. I checked and no apps were causing any unusually heavy draw. Voice calls, Mobile standby, Screen, and Bluetooth were the top four, which is correct for my usage. Time for a new battery? But my 2013 doesn't need a new battery... and it's a year older.
Soo... I'm thinking about switching back to my 2013 Moto X. Possibly the first time anyone ever downgraded? It's not that I dislike the 2014. The Active Display is even more sensitive and has a couple extra features which is super cool. But, I just like the 2013 better. It fits in my hand and in my pocket better. It fits perfectly in my cup holder. If only I could get it to be less poky. You guys don't know how many times I wished I could upgrade the processor on it like you can on a PC. I thought about flashing the stock 5.0 on it but I read that people had issues with a few things after that, like battery life.
What's the community opinion about this dilemma of mine? I wish Motorola hadn't been bought by Lenovo, because all the new Motorola phones have abandoned the Motorola philosophy that made the original Moto X great. Now it's just another phablet with a 5.5 inch screen. The only phone that's compact and powerful like the 2013 Moto X is the Sony Xperia Z3/Z5 Compact. I seriously considered one of them, the Z3 Compact has the same specs as the 2014 Moto X and the Z5 Compact is even more powerful, but I'd loose the Active Display feature. Yeah there's apps to mimic the feature, but I tried them on my SGS3 and they're not nearly as good.
What to do, what to do...
