[Q] Optimize the Battery - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Last night I left my new Nexus 6 with Notifications OFF and all the apps closed at 50% battery, after 7 hours the battery was at 39%, it seem to much to me to use 11% just idle in 7 hours, other phones I've used in similar situations will not use more than 3-5%, please could you share what are the best practices I should follow without having to put the phone is Airplane mode, etc., or install a Battery monitor app and what to look for?. I am using 5.1 stock, I've only unlocked the Bootloader, installed Root and TWRP, everything else is stock. Is there a Custom ROM I can install to optimize Battery without having a huge sacrifice in Performance? thank you very much

Greenify, wakeloc detector first. If you want something near stock Cleanrom, though with the right settings you can get stock to last. Turn off autosync, location, etc. Anything your not using turn it off.

I just disabled OK Google it seems to be better now

There's been a weird issue with gapps/play services lately that basically will constantly wake your device. I believe newer gapps may have this fixed though. You should be losing some where. Less than 1% an hour with screen off.

I installed the Chroma ROM and disabled "OK Google", and the phone last night was idle for about 8 hours and the battery went down from 54% to 50%, that's around 0.5% per hour, I was also monitoring the "Deep Sleep" CPU state and at the end of the 8 hours was at 96%, is all of that reasonable? thanks

My phone sleeps like a baby with the recent gapps floating around. Thank god, couple weeks ago Google had different plans for my new Nexus. Also lately I've run Vindicator kernel and gotten amazing battery life I highly suggest trying it.

How do I know the version of the Gapps? I installed the ones Chroma ROM suggested, is Vindicator compatible with this ROM?

all kernels should work on all roms currently. But yes, I have seen people in the chroma thread running Vindicator I believe.

Basically most gapps have the date in the file name and with all the play service updates lately, look for the most recent. And yes Vindicator works great with Chroma.

[Q] Tired of the ROM search, thinking stock + root is the way to go

So I've run a few different versions of Cog and Perception, and there is always one thing or another that just isn't quite right for me, currently it's the issues in both with contacts not syncing very well, if at all. So I'm thinking about going back to stock and just rooting so I can still use TB, as well as kill all the bloatware.
My issue with that is that my USB port is very iffy. Most time I can't make my phone connect at all, so I send ROMs to my phone with bluetooth, and flash with ROM Manager. My question then, is there anyone out there who has basically a flat stock rom, plus root, and w/o the Bloat that I can DL and flash? And a totally stock one, for that matter, so I can at the very least have it for when a real 2.2 eventually shows up...
Alternatly, is there a 2.2 or 2.2.1 ROM out there that the contacts actually sync on? I like Cog and/or Perception, but as far as I can see there are a lot of questions about the contacts, and no answers or solutions.
Completetly stock + root: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8278935#post8278935
Try Di11igaf's 5.3 rom. I haven't specifically tried contacts sync, but that rom is totally bugfree for me so you can try it.
Have you looked at FireFly?

I was thinking of just waiting for the official 2.2 update and maybe just a lag fix. I updated to the 2.2 beta for a while. This weekend I took the leap and flashed phoenix 4.1 plus a few of the posted fixes because I was tired of waiting and the lagginess of the beta. I couldn't be happier. It's fast, lag free, fully functional. We will see this week if there are any calendar and contact syncing issues, but I don't expect any.
I've been thinking the same thing as the OP, because whenever I try a custom rom, wifi seems to rape my battery in the background. I know, some people say that I should be leaving it off if I'm not using it, but I like my stuff on autosync and I live on campus (where wifi is everywhere). On wifi with stock + root, my captivate grabbed emails faster than my ipod touch 4th gen. Battery life drained 1% every 2-3 hours idling, and wifi never even shows up on the battery usage list. On custom roms, on the other hand, my battery drains 1% each hour idling due to wifi, according to the battery info...
The one big thing that draws me towards these custom roms is that they're so darn aesthetically pleasing
Serendipity works wonderfully, the contacts sync perfectly. It's not stock though.
I had the same problem with Cog as the OP. As in syncing not working. i flashed to Serendipity last night and it sync'd up right away. and it is faster than Cog. But the phone has locked up twice. once in google nav and the other in google map. to the point where i had to yank the battery. power button did nothing. so thinking about a total stock rom too.
Been running custom roms since september. Can not stay on stock for more then 5 minutes, the phone is unbelievable slow.
Making things work right is part off the fun. I get over 24 hrs use without charge and everything works on current configuration.

So about how much % do you drain on your custom roms after a day of use? On stock + root + lagfix, I find my phone to be smooth, and I lose about 25% per 24 hours with my normal uses (text, perhaps 10 - 20 minutes of phone call) and wifi enabled 24/7. It's nowhere near unbelievably slow.
I'm on serendipity now, but my battery has been draining 1% each hour with wifi enabled when I'm not touching it.

I use my phone much more then you do by your description. So it is hard to compare. My screen is on 4hrs a day, but honestly why would anyone need a phone that last 4 days without needing a charge? No outlets in your neck of the woods?
Over night I will drain about 1-2 % when idle

I don't need it to run 4 days without charging, but having a nice reservoir of juice for when I need to do something in class (voice record, video record, etc) I can have no problem. I just don't like losing about 6-7 per night of idle. I'm not doing anything different on serendipity compared to what I do on stock, so I'm not quite sure why it gets raped overnight.

What is the kernel on your phone, can find it in settings, about phone, kernel.
What is the modem, same place, baseband.
Things I do, turn off auto rotate, set wifi sleep policy to off when screen is off

I would have told you, but I just now flashed paragon for a spin LOL (you can probably tell I'm not ready to give up on custom roms at all, despite what I said about my battery on stock being better).
This rom's got the JK4 modem and paragon kernel.
Honestly I liked serendipity's aesthetics a bit better; I know it uses JK4 modem but I don't remember what kernel [speedmod perhaps?]
On the side note, about wifi sleep policy--correct me if I'm wrong--does that use 3G while screen is off? I'm always walking around campus with wifi everywhere, and I've always had wifi enabled. I use a wireless router in my room, so unless I'm misunderstanding something, wouldn't it be beneficial that I leave wifi sleep policy to never?
You can try it both ways.
I changed my kernel to hardcores latest k12s 500 hz.
Paragon is jpy base you can flash any theme that is compatible
I think I used stock the first day I purchased the phone, and that's all. Ever since, I've only used two ROMs on a consistent basis, Cezar's Basic ROM, and Cognition 3.xx.
I always wondered how the stock ROM with lagfix, and removed bloatware would perform...

Change the Wifi Sleep Policy to "When screen turns off" or "Never when plugged in".
Even so, 1% per hour means you'd last over 4 days.
Went to pheonix last night, thought it was working great, and it had my contacts. For a while, then they disappeared again. Plus, when I get an incoming call instead of ringing I lose all service, though I can make outgoing calls.
I have Cog 2.38 and 3.04, Perception 10.2, Firefly, Pheonix, and stock + root all on my phone, along with ROM manager Pro and a willingness to use it.
I'm begining to think the contacts issue is related to Rogers 2.2 and/or 2.2.1, just because I never had this issue until I used them. I know my 2.38 works good, but I''m going to try firefly and then I think i'm going to figure out a lagfix to put on stock + root and see where that gets me before I got back to 2.38.
All and all, I'm just waiting for an Atrix at this point. Pass this on to my wife, who won't mind it at stock, and play with the new phone. Unless she decides she wants the Atrix. Ack.

Battery is terrible?

I have been using my phone on wife since about 7 am. Since then, I have done maybe an hour of browsing on chrome, installed an app or 2, watch a short YouTube video, checked my email once, and played a game for 5 mins. I saw other people's battery stats and it says they have 20 plus hours of talk time? Mine says there is only 3 hours left. Is it possible I have a faulty battery? I'm also using juice defender and power save along with the brightness all the way down. I'm running android revolution hd with elemental kernel. I have the att version. Thanks in advance.

I find that based on my usage habits that I get terrible battery on Android Revolution v12. I always find myself going back to a rooted AT&T Sense build, and I'm able to pull 3 hours of screen-on time with 20% left.
Be sure to use a Wakelock Detector to pinpoint any rogue apps that are keeping your phone awake when it should be sleeping.
Also; be careful with those "Juice Defender"-type apps, Android has come a VERY long way in managing RAM, and resources since 2.2 (Froyo).
Report back with any findings
Don't mean to hijack the the thread but im having a rather peculiar issue 3g and wifi are eating away my battery like a percent for every 2-3 mins that also while only browsing web nothing else in the background can anyone help . Also im on stock rom , no root and s-off
P.S auto sync is off few apps have been disabled like (play store, facebook , google + and google search and few more)
jucie defender and power saver lol over kill i bet they are working against each other

I have about the same hours on stock rooted AT&T 1.26.502.12. Updating to stock rooted 2.24.401.1 has about the same hours, but it's only been about a week and I'm constantly flashing the new ElementalX kernels, so it hasn't settled.
Also, running at 1.2ghz and intellidemand/fiops.

what? or do u mean WiFi
you should use GSAM or wakelock detector to view if something is killing your battery, I have a very VERY good battery life specially since I updated to 2.24 firmware, i guess you don't have root
Check the ss I posted of gsm, and I do have root. Also, what does it say in talk time left in gsm battery monitor when you have full battery?
My battery life was great until i flashed new firmware. i'm on ARHD ROM and it was great on 11.5, with 12 i started using nova launcher and now battery life isn't as good as it was previously. Have you experienced changes with your battery life while using some custom launchers? Or that's rather caused by new firmware/rom/radio/etc?

if i was you I will do the following
-update the **** out of your ONE (firmware and ROM)
but since it would be to laborious, I probably do the following:
1 Factory reset, in android (backup your things becaus it will be erased if you do a factory reset in android, or just dont do it!!!!!!!!) and in recovery (or only in recovery =.=
2 Install a custom rom that is near to a stock rom like ARHD (do it two times with full wipe)
3 with titanium backup remove (after do a backup) the htc bloatware crap that you dont use
4 with titanium backup remove the gapss that you could download from playstore, like youtube, gmail, and specially MAPS
5 GREENIFY all apps that you dont use commonly, you will be able to greenify apps like maps and youtube
6 DONT USE SEEDER OR ENTROPY MODS!!!
7 DONT USE battery saver apps
8 set battery saver option: cpu, vibration, and if you can get use to, mark the data connection option too...
9 Use lagfix app...
10 download Trickster MOD and set you gobernator to MSM-DCVS (this could cause a little lag when you turn on your ONE)
allow to pass one day with you fresh rom, and the following day check how is your battery life
11 if you still have a not soo good battery life, try disabling media storage in apps configuration menu, maybe you have some corrupted media files that dont let media storage to scan all of your media and check if your battery life improve, if so, you should clean your media files, (because let disabled the media storage app have very high side effects)
optional
12 use mods related to a battery life of pimp my rom
13 disable location update from maps, and all location things from configuration (enable when you need them)
14 disable all autosync things that you could do manually, like dunno facebook
15 disable auto update hour and date
+++ disable google now
more optional sh*t
16 when your phone is fully changed in android, turn it off and let it charge until the led change to green, do that one time every two or three days
17 battery stats wipe whit any app of playstore
18 manage your brightness screen manually (its easy and fast in android 4.2.2)
fin...
normally i get 5:30 and 6:00 hours screen on time with a very good use (3g) but one day i get these results
BTW download the app batteryDrain is very good to check how your battery is draining
...And set the option in GSAM that show statistics since last full charge, and dont plug your phone because it could reset the statistics (well if you are reviewing your BLife that could be a problem since stock battery report of sense is almos usless)

Moto X (2014) has terrible standby

I love the phone, but actual use doesn't drain the battery quickly, but standby does. I use avast battery saver, and it doesn't help. Over 20 minutes I lost 2 percent, or 1 percent every 45 minutes. It's annoying how quickly it drains. I have the unlocked edition with 6.0 for two days now, and battery life hasn't improved. Ive wiped the cache and have done a reset, but to no avail. Should I root and go to a different ROM, or try something else? thanks.
What kind of apps do you have installed? Have you gone into the battery details to see what's using the battery? I have had CM 13 and like it, but can't really tell much difference between it and stock besides having much better control and customization, things that I find it hard to live without (granted, I only had stock 6 for a few hours).

AH this is my other account, but i have instagram and snapchat being the only auto refresh apps, and snapchat only loads when i open it so it doesnt sync when its on standby, and ive reinstalled instagram. Without it, nothing changes. So im at a loss as to changing roms or sticking with stock
Have you looked at the 'Battery' section in settings to see what it says about per-app usage? It lists the apps by how much each one has used, and gives useful information about how long each one has been active, how many times it has woken the phone, etc..... Not sure about stock, but in CM13 it even estimates how many mAh each one has used. I would try to figure out what exactly is using the battery before switching to a custom rom (unless you're wanting to switch anyway), because there's a chance that if it's a specific app that's causing the drain it will still do it on a custom rom. I would also get rid of any battery or system managers, savers, optimizers etc... I'm not saying that none of them ever work, but obviously they're not working for you, and could be part of the problem.
I don't lose any more than 5 percent overnight on CM13. There are only 3 issues [that I am aware of] that you may have going from stock to Cyanogenmod: Moto voice doesn't work (OK Google does), Android Pay probably won't work, and if you use Google Cardboard you'll have to change the dpi settings in display options, which is no big deal. The one thing that I miss from stock is Moto voice and being able to wake the phone with my customized hot phrase. Other than that everything 'just works' and is smooth, stable and super fast. And gets an update almost every day.

Battery Life and Wakelocks

Hi guys,
so i newly setup my phone recently with OOS 4.0.3 in order to have a clean phone for the most efficient use.
For my surprise, for the first time using the 3T my energy efficiency was very good, i managed to get 4,5h SOT with the first 50% because i had almost no drain when the screen was turned off.
I attached the screenshots.
Basically, i just flashed OOS 4.0.3 and the newest franco kernel and magisk for root. I didnt use greenify (which i usually do), just the strict standby option in the android settings.
So far so good, but now to the part i cant understand.
I installed gsam battery monitor and gave it root access, so i can have detailed battery information.
From that point, i experienced again the standby drain combined with wakelooks, as u can see in the screenshot starting around 60% of the battery.
So far i uninstalled the app, i used greenify, but i cant get back when i had no wakelocks.
Is it really because of Gsam Battery? How can get away the standby drain without setting up the phone completely new?
PS: I also deactivated some of the access rights of apps, especially for play services.
Is it possible that they regain the access by themselves or that google play services is draining the battery

Don't deactivate app rights of play services. It would break the functionality randomly and u won't know what happened. Just enable and reboot. Next time something happens, check the stat in gsam battery monitor. It's a good app and I am using it from 3 years.
It's not gsam I've had it installed on every phone for years and I always get amazing battery life.
I dont use google apps at all besides gmail and maps sometimes. But ill try around if it makes a difference.
I also cant believe that GSAM really is the problem there, but i didnt change anything else, i was just surprised of the good battery life and wanted to see the characteristics of battery statistics when i have a normal standby drain.
And immediatelly from that point on, the standby drain changed as u can see on the screenshots, even after uninstalling GSAM.
I now get 2h SOT with 50%, not 4,5.
So, is it possible that anything influencing that is changing by itself?
I didnt install any app or changed any setting, all i use was setted up in the beginning (franco, magisk, viper, all apps)
Yes google play store and google play services if you downloaded it and installed it that way? Google ruins battery life very randomly. If you restored a titanium backup or sideloaded the app then I have no clue. Even if you didnt do anything different there are a ton of things that can go wrong with android in the background. Recharge and reboot and start over.

I just now wiped also system and dirty flashed the ROM + the stuff i need. Ill see it that solves the deal.
I just cant accept to not have the control over my phone as thats one of the advantages of rooting. I got the same battery life with same usage with my 2,5 year old OnePlus One.
I run the same apps on every phone and this phone has doubled the performance and battery compared to my nexus 6 note 5 and nexus 6p. First phone I've owned that actually sleeps when I turn off the screen.

Some parts of it only work with SuperSU, sure. The important bit that fixes the MRa big does unfortunately.
Not found a magisk equivalent, but I'm eager to find one!
I just recently got my 3T two weeks ago running OOS 4.0.3 and I also notice a lot of wakelocks, especially when on mobile data (3G/4G).
I am still tinkering to figure out what are the root causes for wakelocks in this case.
I suggest you install BetterBatteryStats from XDA, it does provide a lot of good info. GSAM is good too but I prefer BBS. You can grant it permissions to Battery_Stats if you are not rooted.
Here are my findings so far:
Google Services likes to access the GPS a lot, so I turned of Location History. This resulted in fewer wakelocks when the screen is off.
I have changed the GPS and set it to GPS Only so that it doesn't use the cell towers and WiFi to help determine a location. I am not sure if this makes a difference for wakelocks yet.
I know Nougat has doze, I am not sure how well it works...fortunately there is Aggressive Doze in the battery section of the settings. I have not tested this yet but this is something I will look into once I have determined all others aspects that may be causing wakelocks.
I do have the LED notification light enabled and I am using LightFlow to manage it. It works in conjunction with the built-in LED settings from OOS. This is fine, but I do believe this may cause wakelock issues.
Once again, in my experience, I get a lot of wakelocks when I am on mobile data compared to being on WiFi and I am not sure why there is a difference.

Question Critical battery drain

Hello
Yesterday i had the phone around 65% at 01h00, in the next morning (around 7h20) i wake up to find the phone at 1%, no wifi/4G/bluetooth/GPS...etc was active, even the battery saver was ON. As you can see in the screenshots, android system drain battery around 400% !!! what's up with this behavior ? happened the 1st time last week (49% drained in 8 hours) the problem seems gone after i fully charge and than reboot, but still today happened.
The phone is almost 1 month old.
The 1st few days, i disconnected the phone from charging at 100% and went to sleep, after 6 hours battery is drained by 6% without doing nothing. is this normal ??? screenshot
ROM : crDroid 8, latest magisk installed+microg+magiskhide props config and fdroid/aurora modules installed.
Thanks
which rom are u using now? stock or custom?

clearly something is going wrong, I would suggest factory resetting, and optionally reinstalling your custom rom.

well, that must a bug related to optimiztion of the rom, report it to the rom mantainer
Exactly what happened to me same ROM same phone but I didn't root it. it drained from 54% to 6% during the night, next day I switched the ambient display off and the battery became better but so far I am also looking for solutions to make it similar to miui
I feel the battery is draining so much fast when I start using the apps unlike miui but the room is also great and fast , with my light use it gave me 1 day of use and remaining of 10% with 120 fps (3.3%/hr screen on and 0.6%/h screen off )
today I will test it with 60fps

No, only when charging of course (around 40°)

I'll wait and see if this bug happens again as right now i need the phone for the rest of the week, if happens again i might switch rom altogether on the weekend.

Wow, 3.3%/hr is seriously impressive for active drain, especially for 120hz. Can I ask you if you did anything special / your exact setup? I installed Ricedroid 8.0 + Sleepy kernel and applied the GMS Doze module + Naptime (as suggested by a kind poster on here), and this allowed my idle drain to go down to 0.2%/hr, but my active drain is still struggling a bit.

to be honest I am not sure if I report it correctly I have used accubattry app but I will post few screenshots from the app and you can see , I didn't do anything except disable the ambient display maybe my usage is light in default I don't know I also formatted the phone like 20 times during my testing for different ROMs. I found Cr-droid to be the best so far or miui

Ohh the 3.3%/hr is combined use, which takes account of both active drain and idle drain (through what I guess is some weighted average). But honestly, 6.7%/hr (or even 7.8%/hr tbh) is still pretty damn impressive, so I'll thank you for letting me know! Now I wanna flash crDroid haha.

I spent 1 day and half trying all custom roms in this forum because for long time I was on miui and didn't know how custom ROMs are now , after trying I found that all custom ROMs either are pixel flavored or very basic without any customization and I settled with Cr-droid because it offers best of both worlds less google and good customization options.
now regarding the battery after few days of using on 60 fps I have combined use 2.4%/hr and 0.8% screen off but I still feel that it drains fast during my usage compared to Miui , I have only used naptime for optimization do you advise me to add anything else for non-rooted device ?

MIUI very often switches off alarm (not clock alarm) and wakeups -- it's known for long. Your notifications often comes late when using MIUI. In real life situation, however you might never notice it, but it's there. It also sets higher priorities to known messaging, social media apps to receive notification/action faster than any apps that are outside "the list".
It's a good trade off for battery life compares to stock AOSP or lineage which put every apps on generic list of "optimized battery" based on your pattern. It will took a long before the pattern is useable.

I'm not sure about your possibilities on a non-rooted device honestly. I think Naptime can work on a non-rooted device, if you grant a few permissions through ADB first (if I remember correctly, the app itself will guide you through the process). Be mindful of which apps you're restricting though, as Naptime will likely cause delays in the arrival of notifications. You can whitelist apps through Android's battery restriction screen.

yes I am it currently after activation via ADB it made some improvement I felt , so far the highest consuming system apps are : Android OS [19%] screen [9%] and System UI [6%] can I do something about them ?

Hmm I don't have any further tips honestly, not about these specific things. In my case, using Naptime already improves battery life by a ton over the course of a day (not wasting entire %s in hours of idle time is already huge).
Try and see if greenify or its replacements helps.
