Slow data over wifi - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So guys, I've just bought a nexus 6 last week, and I'm experiencing some strange issues with the WiFi.
Loading content is really slow, things like loading app list on google play, new videos from my subscriptions on YouTube or even a search on google using chrome can take minutes (not exaggerating here, on stopwatch to load the information and pictures of an app on play store the phone took more than 2 minutes).
And some notifications they don't come right away, (new emails, WhatsApp,etc...)
Although the internet where I live now is not the best and the modem/router is a single channel fritzbox, it's fast enough for a simple WhatsApp message to come through.
What I ruled out is:
Provider blocking ports used by google services < contacted the support and no ports are blocked, and things work fine with my mate 7 running kit Kat
Provider slowing down access to google < nope, it's illegal here and again my mate 7 works fine
Interference by other WiFi networks < I'm in a WiFi crowded place now, but my router is the only one on channel 13, tried other channels and no luck either, and again all other WiFi devices work fine here.
My nexus 9 shows the same symptom but not always.. So I assume it's a lollipop thing... Someome has some tips of things that I should try? Thanks a lot

Have you run a speedtest by chance?

Yes, and some times it never finishes it when trying the upload test, download speed is okay with 9Mbps but upload test stays in 0... Ping is not consistent between 23ms up to 83...
Will post a screenshot with a new test as soon as my PC is finished downloading updates .

Could you try running a speedtest on the nexus 6 and the. On the mate 7? This will help narrow things down a bit.

I'd say it's most likely a router issue. On my 100 Mbit/s broadband I just clocked 111 Mbit/s over Wi-Fi. In other words, the N6 is more than capable...

@Iheartradio said it would be there around 3PM this afternoon, not sure of the timezone though, but i am guessing EST
Edit: just rechecked the tweet, from @iheartradio, and yes, it will be available at 3PM EST
I was wondering the same. I can't find it in the market. Anybody got it.
Just downloaded it from the market.
Unzip, then install.
im so excited i finally downloaded it from the market.
wtf, this thing looks great, has the clearchannel stations i've been wanting, but only "connecting" all the time, never actually plays...tried many different stations...anybody know whats up with this app?
check my signature for what i'm using
i have emailed the developer, waiting for response
have a bugreport if someone wants to see it
Good luck with those emails to the dev. Been trying to get an updated status on this for months. Over my 1.5M wifi connection, the thing connects in 1-2 seconds, even when I'm only getting "one bar" of wifi...over my 5 bar, 800K 3G connection at my gym, it takes 5 minutes and drops out continuously. Another DRM laden failure to satisfy customers...

damn it . . . .
If it's any consolation, it works fine on the Droid (apparently). Odd how so many streaming radio apps, Pandora, Last.fm, etc work great over even marginal 3G, but Clear Channel has managed to make streaming even AM radio look difficult...
yup...works great on wifi, takes 4 minutes to start streaming on 3G
better than nuthin i guess, wonder if its buffering a large amount of play time first
It can't be buffering as it will drop out regularly. My theory is it's trying to initiate some bloated DRM layer and when it doesn't succeed, it drops and resets. You also cannot access Clear Channel stuff on a PC without their bloated web client while other stations let you stream through your own software.

this app definitely needs work it will probably never get, but, i've been trying to add some clearchannel stations to stuff like AOR, Droidcumulus, Cherry Player, even moodio.fm (which is now mymuze.fm) since november with no luck, so this is better than nothing
i just gotta live with selecting the station five minutes before i want to listen to it
planning my radio listening in advance now....
You used to be able to extract the stream URL and use your own client, but they seem to be changing the URL periodically through the hour to force their own interface.

authorization tokens...thats why i hate clearchannel
they claim its about saving bandwidth, therefore money
they dont want to have people outside of the advertisers' customers listening area hogging up their bandwidth, cause people in austrailia arent gonna buy groceries at the pittsburgh grocery stores that advertise during the penguins' hockey games, for example
its akamai....they got the whole authorization token thing going on....changes every 45 minutes or so on some of the stations i've monitored

[Q]Issues with Wi-Fi on BT[Q]

Hi guys,
I'm on my third HTC One, and all three of my One's experienced this issue. Basically when at home on my HomeHub 3, if I download something large (take Angry Birds for example) the Wi-Fi will drop out. It WILL reconnect immidiatley, but it keeps stopping downloads and sometimes the downloads don't continue and so I have to monitor everyhing that is downloading. It seems fine when Web Browsing etc, but when downloading thats when issues kick in. I'm using a laptop, iPad and Xbox and none of those are having these issues, it's just the One. I was in the Trafford Centre earlier doing lots of downloading though and there wasn't a single issue.
Just wondering if it's a problem with the Hub or a driver issue?
Mike.

I also have this issue. One thing you could try is change the frequency to 2.4ghz or 5ghz instead of auto. Hoping it's just a driver bug. I'm using wpa 2 security on my wireless at home. I haven't checked to see if WiFi drops out at my office which is wep I believe.

I have heard of people having issues with HH3 on Android before. I'm trying to find the post but no luck. I think it had something to do with the HH3 default setting for channel selection. With it set to Auto, Android phones were having problems. I would first try logging into your router and changing the channel selection from Auto to a free channel. Use the Android App WiFi Analyser to find a clear channel. Also avoid using channel 13.
Having trawled through the interweb to try and track the issue down, the route cause seems to be the firmware in the HH3 is a steaming heap. You are probably best sacking it off for your own router. I'm having all sorts of problems with my Virgin "Superhub" as they keep pushing updates to it without warning, which resets all my security and settings to default! The only reason I've not gone back to my custom DD-WRT Linksys WRT160NL is that it is buried in my attic somewhere and I just know in will be in the bottom of the last box right at the back....

Extremely long Wi-Fi access times

My WiFi has issues opening new connections, like checking my email can take anything from a normal 1 second to just sit there and spin for 30 seconds.
This gets worse if I ask the email client to check all three accounts at the same time.
Opening say facebook through a bookmark on the start screen, can either load instantly, or just show a white screen until I force close Chrome and retry.
I never get an actual timeout error, but it'll keep loading some items between 10 seconds, to just never connecting.
When I do a speed check, there's no issue, I get the same 12 Mbps as the wired computer, assuming it'll actually start downloading.
On the play store there's broken downloads though, it'll download at max speed instantly, but then hang in the middle until I force stop the play store (or reboot).
If I let it sit long enough, it might resume but often with corrupt downloads as a result.
I've had this problem for a while now, and I've tried connecting to various other networks with completely different configurations and it's pretty much consistent.
Disabling WiFi and using the LTE network instead, it doesn't display this behaviour at all, so it has to be something with the WiFi.
Has anyone else had this? I can't find anything useful through the search or google, they all suggest I do this and that on my router, but the other devices work fine.
Tested with the HTC M7, an old Motorola Razr, even the now ancient Moto XT720 has no issues.
If you are in the stock Lollipop 5.0, then you should check your logcat (or use CatLog app in PlayStore if you are rooted).
There are many many WifiStateMachine errors that are logged each second.... I made a thread about it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/help/xt1095-pure-edition-stock-5-0-major-t3002124
I reverted back to 4.4.4 and had no more of those errors.

I checked your thread, and I had a bug like that on 4.4.4 actually.
Where it would work fine, go to sleep then not wake up again.
For me, it was a game from humble bundle that triggered this, "The Deer God"
There was another game on play that did the same, but I can't remember the name of that one.
After I emailed the devs of Deer God, they oddly found the bug immediately and their new version didn't have this problem.
I didn't even send them a log file or anything.. Which was weird.
So far this never happened after upgrading to Lollipop though.
My WiFi problems disappeared at work, but remained at home.
Thinking it was the router, I borrowed a WiFi repeater but the problem still occurred.
Even when I used the repeater as a hotspot with cable.
I was about to give up, and just use my 4G all the time..
But I installed DD-WRT, and lo and behold, WiFi works flawlessly?!
It's not like I'm using a cheap rubbish router, it's the Netgear Nighthawk for crying out loud..
You'd think the software for it would be well coded considering how long they've been doing these devices...

Samsung Galaxy S6 WiFi Issues

Hello Everyone! I would like to request your help in fixing my issues with my newly bought GS6. Last week I bought the GS6 from AT&T and the WiFi was working just fine from my home. However after moving in to university I started getting these issues where pictures and videos from apps like Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and Twitter would not load. Even stuff from my emails wouldn't load while on this WiFi. However on my laptop and desktop everything loads blazingly fast. I tried a speed test and my PC read 356 Mbps while on S6 read 16 Mbps. Even with 16 Mbps down, it should load everything just fine instead of failing to load at all. I did some research and some people said to download DNSet from the Google play store to remedy the situation and it works! Except... I can't receive or send messages after running the app, thus forcing me to resort to a different option. My roommates don't run into this problem at all but they're on iPhones so I don't know what I can do right now besides return my phone, pay the $35 restocking fee and get a new phone. If anyone has any experience in dealing with this, please let me know. Much appreciated!
NOTE: I am on 5.0.2 since AT&T is slow to release firmware updates

DNSet did that same to me.. but i figured out if you put your phone on airplane mode.. then turn on DNSet .. then turn off airplane more... it works great.. send and receive messages and the wifi works great.. hopefully that works for you man

Music stuttering when on Wifi

I've had a problem the last few months with my music stuttering when I'm on wifi. This problem does not occur on 4g connection.
The problem is on any wifi network I'm on. It's really annoying. First I thought it was a Spotify problem and reinstalled the app, but that didn't help.
Music played from the player stutters as well when on wifi.
I've tried googling this, but I can't seem to find anyone who has had this problem
Anyone else with this problem? Or know how to fix it?
Have the same problem, but haven't found a solution yet.

Give us details guyz. We are jot gods. Firmware version? Custom or official? Any background apps that sucking your wifi while you are connected? Just saying that if you are connected on wifi your phone is uploading on cloud and that means lower connection for the rest. Its the only thing that comes in my mind. And i would suggest you to remove connectivity between clouds like google photos, onedrive etc and check again

Firmware version EVA-L09C432B393. Official version. I've got nothing that's uploading when I'm on wifi. The only thing that is set to upload the photo app when I've taken new photos, but that is like once a month maybe.

I got B394 and i can tell you that i never faced such issues even with earlier versions. Although im considered lucky because i have 300mbps up-down on my home internet and unlimited up-down speeds, unlimited data and i dont suffer with my streaming.
Try to remove every sync from the settings, like mail , google viber, facebook etc etc. Its most likely the reason why you have lag spikes. Go on Wi-Fi and activate the setting that allows you to see the download-upload speed on the top of your screen. This way you will be able to check in-out data. connect on your wifi and check if there is movement. I can not see where else is the problem. If you have data cap on upload it could be the big reason why you get stuttering on wifi when you are using streaming music. After you desync your phone run your app and check if you are facing the same issue. If that fails most likely your phone is suffering from a hungry memory app.
All of my playlists are offline lists as well. And I don't have the stuttering when I'm offline.
I can't find any option to show up and down speed on the wifi. But our home wifi is really good, and we have no cap on upload speed.
And I find it weird that it affects both music apps. I have songs saved on my phone and these also stutter when on wifi, even though there shouldn't be any reason for it.
Take a look o.n the upper right side what I mean. And just to answer your question yes. It does feed something somewhere when you are connected on wifi. There is no other explanation. Awful but its happening. Did you try the rest i suggested you?

Thanks for the help.
Me and my husband found out what was wrong. There is something wrong with the SD card I had in my phone. Turns out Spotify was saving all of my playlists there and it couldn't handle being connected to wifi I guess.
And the SD card somehow ****ed up my wifi connection speed as well. Did speedtests with it in and out and it was a big difference.
