I have a rooted phone, running KK- the only thing I have done is freeze a few apps and install the hotspot provision apk. BEFORE I do anything, I like to check with people who know. Check my plan:
Unfreeze everything frozen (including updater)
Accept OTA update (this will update me to 5.0)
I will loose root in the process..
Root phone using new root process
Install 39a Hotspot Provision APK to allow hot spot
Is it really that simple? I just feel like I'm missing something...
You will need to put the stock Hot Spot files back in, reboot before you can take the OTA. Also, before you look at the process to re-root, make sure you have the latest USB drivers from LG.
Just to check... I don't have to uproot first right?

I think I might have painted myself into a corner on this one. I got my phone rooted on ICS & have been loving it. I used TitaniumBackup+ to do a full system backup and then proceeded to nuke the bulk of Verizons apps. All was well. Now, the Jellybean update is out. The OTA update hasn't hit my phone yet. So I went and downloaded the official build. It turns out the upgrade won't run without the missing Verizon apps. So I went to my backup folder & lo and behold: they didn't get backed up.
My fear is that the OTA update just hasn't made it to me yet & will also fail because those applications are missing. Right now, it's stuck on BackupAssistantClient.
Someone suggested I go and get gapps, but that won't install either.
Does anyone know where I can find copies of those apps or am I just SOL? It's not TOTALLY awful. It just means I have to wait until November for my contract to be up.
Thank you in advance!
Google "House of Bionic" read all insructions, download program, and use it to FXZ back to stock ICS with all the apps then you'll be good to go.
It should be nice and simple in your situation.
1. Use RSDLite plus the 6.7.246 FXZ file to put the phone all the way to stock.
2. Get root on ICS and then install OTA Rootkeeper. Make sure that the only things you do are root and install OTA rootkeeper.
3. Use Stock Recovery to apply the JB update. Check for root, which should hopefully have stayed.
All should be well after that. I've done some reading but I'm not 100% sure if it's safe to downgrade flash back to ICS after you take the JB OTA.
The House Of Bionic works perfectly! I did lose root though. I used the Voodoo app to back it up, but for some reason it just didn't protect it. I'm ok with it for now as I was more interested in JB than having root. All I really used root for was to get rid of the bloatware in the first place.
Wait!

STOP!
Use HoB to root as well. In the main menu, it is under utilities. THEN update the superuser binaries and use Voodoo to save root.
Then you should be able to run the update from the stock recovery and restore root when you reboot.
No need to keep the annoying bloatware! Or once updated you can add Safestrap and try out some of the cool JB ROMs.
Ok so I rooted my galaxy note3(about a month ago), but today when I turned it on the phone instantly installs a new update without my permission and takes away my root. This would be fine, but now my phone says "custom" when booting up and it is not rooted anymore. How would I be able to take away the "custom" boot image? I am seriously considering selling att GN3 at this point(tired with ATT bs and lack of any info on updates) and opting for a nexus 5. My only problem is that people will be turned off by my previous evidence of rooting my device because it says "custom". I essentially would like to return my phone to all stock settings.

Try simply rebooting. That worked for me after unrooting via odin one click on mi9. The first boot showed custom wich confused me but after just a reboot it went away. I think it softbooted after odin and didnt run through the whole process.
If not then the only option currently to remove custom is to re root using kingo then use xposed to fake custom system status. The latter would be shady however if you plan to sell the device.

Sorry to bother you, but I am not too familiar with how to do this. Would you be able to show me some sort of step-by-step guide which I would be able to use? Also how do I check if I'm on mi9 and not something else(because I currently have the most updated firmware on my phone)

The most updated is mj5 if you took the ota update that hit recently. You can check by going to settings then about phone then look at the last 3 digits of the baseband.
To install xposed go to the link at the top it pasted there on my tablet for some reason. Instructions are there for installation.
download the xposed installer apk. You must be rooted. Use kingoapp for that if necessary. Open xposed installer and go to framework. Install the most recent framework. Then go to download. Download cosmetic device status normal modification. Use that to remove the custom padlock. Reboot. Hit thanx

So, I am on mj5 right now since I got the OTA update and I am no longer rooted because of this. How can I flash to stock or reroot and install xposed? Or am I ****ed?
*EDIT USED KINGO INSTALLED FRAMEWORK ALL IS GOOD IN THE HOOD *
I have a stock vs980 and am trying to decide whether to root or not - I really only want to remove some status bar icons and swap the menu nav button for the recent apps button and can't find any way other than root to do so. The problem is that I read in one of the root threads that there are messages popping up about modified files and viruses and that certain unknown apks needed freezing / uninstalled to stop it. This is obviously big red spying on us to see if we root so they can deny us warranty. But if anybody has a list of apps involved that I could delete via adb while rooting I think I may take the plunge.
So what I'm asking is - Which apps need to be removed to prevent the warnings?

Not sure what you're talking about, I rooted the stock KK rom with ioroot25, installed busybox and I had no issues.
is this correct:
I have a stock 980 rooted (iroot19) with 12b and the stock rom. No recovery installed. The ONLY thing I have done is the hotspot fix (changing the two files).
and added Tritium Backup so I could freeze the VZW junk.
If I change the two hotspot files back to stock (I still have the originals, i renamed them) and unfreeze everything, can I do the OTA, and then root again using iroot 19 or iroot25 and reinstall the hotspot fix (i have to have tethering, I'm unlimited). Does the hotspot fix still work with 24a or what ever the new KK is called?
thanks

4.2.2 isnt all that bad anyway!! battery life is amazing and the phone work awsone.. I guess you could call it a grass is greener on the other side upgrade....

Since you are already rooted it would be easier to just go with a custom recovery and flash a debloated version of the 24a ROM - root sometimes messes with ota. If you just want to do it by ota then you need to restore anything you changed and unroot .
The app was vz protect (Verizon protection and security) it did pop up a "files may have been modified" message when I rebooted after rooting - I disabled the app - but pretty sure big red now knows I'm rooted.

So has it been confirmed that the hotspot fix works with 24a? Even if I reroot and astay with stock recovery?
I am rooted on 4.4.2 on the N900A Note 3 for AT&T and I disabled the OTA notifications a long time ago to prevent breaking root and upgrading to 4.4.4. Now that the Lollipop update is available I would like to re-enable the OTA but when I go to the Application Manager then the Turned Off section, the AT&T Software update is listed but the Turn off button is greyed out and I can't turn it back on. Any suggestions? Please!
Did you freezed the app by using App Quarantine or another root app to disable it? I just re-enabled mine using App Quarantine.
Did you use Titanium Backup or something to freeze it? If so try unfreezing it there. Unless you Odin back to full stock the update will likely fail anyway though, even if you've unrooted. I would wait a day or two, there's a theoretical chance that the method of having root on 4.4.4 will work again (Be on a version Safestrap supports, flash a prerooted version of the ROM through that, then update the low level stuff via Odin)
Thank you both for replying... I have no idea what I did. I have Titanium Backup installed but I do not see a freeze feature. If I used a different app to freeze it will App Quarantine still unfreeze it? If so I'll try that. I no longer need root.
Even if you unfreeze it'll still likely fail out somewhere around 27% for ever being rooted, even if you unroot. You'll almost certainly have to Odin back to stock and take the OTAs in between, may as well wait for someone to post the Odin files for L so you can do it in one step I figure. If you do want to defrost it should work with anything that has that capability, for Titanium you click on the specific package and it should be the middle of the top row on the default Backup Properties tab, says Defrost
I can say neoman is absolutely correct. My phone is rooted and has 4.4.2. It downloaded the Lollipop 5.0 update today from AT&T but failed during installing. Main reason I rooted the phone was to overcome their Kitkat external SD Card issue. Now they fixed the issue with Lollipop but I can't update. I blame them on that .
I wonder if updating to 4.4.4 first will allow me to update to 5.0? The reason is I don't want to lose any current data or apps or settings. I still have a copy of the 4.4.4 downloaded ota earlier but never installed.
Bottomline is I want to update to 5.0 without losing data.
You'll absolutely have to Odin back to stock NC2 before trying to update to 5.0

Is there an external download source for the Lollipop ROM to install via ODIN yet?
You can also Odin to stock NL1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2999317
Typically if you're careful and you know everything you did with root, you can reverse and update... I did this a few times
Sent from my XT907 using XDA Free mobile app
Forgive me here. I have a VZW dev edition.
Currently running 4.4.4 stock rom. I had it rooted before and I think I recently lost root. Forgot why but I didn't really need it.
EDIT: I remember now. I did a factory reset. Did I lose root?
anyways the OTA that came a few weeks ago the small one will not install. I have enabled my apps again that I had disabled. I do not remember if I did a tether hack before which was just replacing a file. Bootloader is unlocked still.
So after the OTA downloads and reboots the android shows up the bar starts to move and then red exclamation mark.
Update unsuccessful.
What do I need to do? I also do not want to wipe data.
The OTA alert is annoying me to no end.
It sounds like the pre-flash validation checks are failing for some reason.
A few things don't add up in your post...
You have a Dev Edition, so to root you unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP, boot into it, and when it prompts you too, allow it to root (or if you don't get rooted, install SuperSU while booted to TWRP). IN that state, a Factory reset doesn't remove root. So did you root by some other method? If so, that is why the OTA is failing.
Next.. you say you did a tether hack that was just replacing a file. Did you put the ORIGINAL file back? If no, that will cause the OTA to fail.
The only way to really know exactly why is to NOT install the OTA, instead just download it. Move the OTA zip from /cache to your /SDCard (which takes root) after it finished downloading. Again Do NOT install it the "normal way". Make sure you have a working STOCK Recovery on your phone. Manually boot to stock recovery and apply the update zip via the menu options. When it errors, it will pause and tell you why, what caused the issue. You need to correct it and try again.
One final option... See -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/faq-how-to-prepare-ota-update-carriers-t3126425 you can take some time and read the first post... then skip to Post #2, and use the Requirements section, and Option 2.
