[Q] 5.0 Hangouts - no floating action button? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

After updating to 5.0 earlier today, I noticed that it added the action button to the default messenger app (among others), however, it doesn't seem to have added it to Hangouts. Is there a reason it's not in that app? Does the Nexus 6 have it in Hangouts? I'm just generally confused as to why it's in Gmail and not Hangouts.
Any insight would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Hangouts hasn't been updated to "proper" Material design yet, for whatever reason. Hence no floating action button and the weird slide-in drawer and tab setup that's sort of a splice of Holo and Material. It's not something that Samsung can do anything about with a firmware update; it's up to Google to actually release a newer version of the app itself via the Play Store.

I didn't realize that Google had not updated it. When they redesigned the icon, I figured they had added that feature in. Thanks for the info though.

Missing Market Updates - don't show

I've been using DROIDs since DROID 1, then X, and now Bionic.
I have the issue on my Bionic: I'll get a notification that an App has an update. When I select the app from my notification pane, it opens Android Market and takes me to the My Apps view. However, no apps display as needing updates. (Yes, I'm sure it's a notification to update an app and not the notification that an app has been updated (auto updates)).
I can go through all my downloaded apps and none of them show as "updateable." Sometimes it displays, that there are more than one (like 3) apps that have an update, but again, when I go to My Apps, I can't find any app that has an update - there is no update button only Open and Uninstall.
Has anyone else seen or heard of this issue?
Have you changed the LCD density at all? That gives me various problems. I always have to grab an older version of the market place to update.

I know what you're talking about. I've found when that happens, it's usually tied to a system app or a preinstalled app, such as Gmail, YouTube, or Zumocast.
Annoying.

I concur, I had the issue as well and updating the pre-installed crapware seemed to remedy the issue.
This has been happening to me as well, and it's not always system apps. Yesterday I had the notification in the morning, with no app showing up to be updated. However, I checked the market later last night, and Swiftkey X was showing up. (I had read that Swiftkey had an update earlier in the day, as I recalled when I saw that.)
It could be that the apps are sending notifications before they hit the market, or it could be that the market app has issues. I think it's the latter. I generally used to check the market for updates when I plug in the phone when going to bed at night, and I may start doing that again.
I hate the new market - since the last few updates (when it got its current new look, with books and movies) the market has been pretty crappy.
Same thing here. I get the notification, but there are no apps showing as having update available. If I go through the apps one by one I can usually find some with updates. I also have apps mysteriously disappear from time to time. I went to open Gentle Alarm last night and it wasnt there anymore, I re-downloaded it and it installed and all my settings were still there. Strange.
For some reason, it keeps changing from your default account to a secondary account. I have two Google accounts on my phone; one for personal and one for work. If you go into Market and then hit menu, accounts-you will notice it changed your default account. I haven't figured out why it does this-my OG never did.
Could it, in part, be due to applications that were set to auto-update?

This happened to me this morning, but changing the account showed me the applications that needed updating. If anyone knows why the account changes, I'd like to know!

Customizing Gear - Null Rom, Notifications, Basic Questions

Hello
I recently acquired a Gear and have been reading, learning and working on it. I have a Verizon Note 2 running Alliance Rom (@beanstown). I've rooted the gear, installed TWRP and installed the latest Null (build 23). I was on V700XXUAMK7, although this morning it updated to V700XXUBNA3 via Gear.
So, first, just same basic questions:
1. Installing apps - once connected via BT DUN, I can install apps from playstore - so, I'm not clear what all the discussion is about pushing apks to the device and then installing them (?). The only thing that came up this morning was google voice app said it wasn't compatible with device, so obviously sideloading this would make sense.
2. Notifications - in almulder's tutorial, there are different tutorials/recommendations regarding notifications. I assume the stock gear notifications still work, plus using Nova's unread count shows gmail messages anyway. I just want to be notified when I receive a text, gmail or google voice message (see below).
3. Re installing stock ROM - is this done by just flashing a zip via TWRP or is this via Odin
4. Google now / voice search - doesn't seem to be working. It listens and translates the text but then nothing happens. I was testing it wanting to send a text. I guess S-Voice is what has to be used (?)
Customizing (why I really created this post):
Although Null ROM is obviously very cool - and the idea of having basically a full phone interface is cool, I just don't really need or want that on the watch. So, I'm trying to figure out the best way to customize the Null ROM to my desires. All I really want to do is to receive notifications of messages (gmail, sms, google voice) - AND reply to them, preferably via voice to text with minimal taps. I'd also like to be able to take photos and share them straight from watch. That's really it! I actually like the large icons of the original stock launcher, it's just missing the functionality.
Thanks in advance for any thoughts / experience.
I like what you are looking for, but I haven't seen a way to do most of what you are requesting. I'm really looking forward to the google wearables SDK that is supposed to come out in the next week or so. I'm hoping that will provide an answer for people looking for more functionality.
1. The play store is a memory hog so I removed it and just Bluetooth apks to the gear then install. Also found this to be quicker then trying to play around on the small screen.
2. From the gear manager app on your phone go to notifications then down the bottom you can select choose to receive notifications from more apps. This is how I got gmail to work.
3. Sorry can't help as I haven't looked back since installing null rom.
4. Once again can't help as I use s-voice
Customizing:
When flashing null rom you can choose not to install nova or Alex launcher. I would think you would lose some functionality though. I installed nova but mainly use the stock user interface and only go to nova to access things I can't access from stock ui.
I only use the gear for notifications and calls also. You can reply to msgs via text to speech from the options when you receive a notification on the gear.
I know the watch shares photos to the phone automatically but I'm not sure on how to share to say Facebook for example. You can share via Bluetooth to another device direct from the gear via the gallery.
Hope I have assisted with some of your queries and welcome to the world of the gear.

I will add though if you plan on using your watch for anything that requires a keyboard, downloading Fleksy keyboard is a must. Makes life so much easier.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR RESPONSE!
I'm getting the hang of things. Now that I realize the "stock" rom is essentially the touchwiz home launcher with some apps things make more sense and I'm able to kind of have a hybrid between the stock and the null rom with nova. For the life of me I can't find any setting that allows me to reply from the touchwiz launcher when there are notifications. Using S-voice I can easily send a message and I even see the "quick" replies set up on the galaxy gear app on my phone, but, can't figure it out.
Anyway, thanks again - getting closer to good functionality.
Just having a look I think you can only use text to speech replies for text msgs. Should be in the options menu when viewing the msg on your gear.

weather clock and null 23
My 3d weather clock suddenly stopped working. It's not the ram I was on null 19 and 15. I tried both several times and just left it with null23. Something is eating away at my ram. It's gotta be that. Any suggestions. If it means anything and probably not a coincidence that after I upgraded to 4.2.2 my battery is draining very very quickly. I saw on a thread the play store eats away at the battery so I'm going to take that out. Any suggestions?

Apparently the majority of the launcher is part of the Google Search app, which you already have and it's the latest available.
You just need the GoogleHome.apk stub to enable it. It's over here (ignore the other files): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2506488
LifeHacker explains the whole thing: http://lifehacker.com/how-to-get-the-google-now-launcher-on-any-phone-running-1568796521
I just did it. Not sure if I'm gonna keep it though.
Thank you. I kinda like the clean look but couldn't find a way of having notification badges or unread sms/email counter. Any ideas how to?

In Nova Launcher, the rendering is handled by the launcher, with MissedIt! as an optional provider. I think the launcher has to support it. You could do it with widgets that look like icons using standalone MissedIt. Otherwise you can try KK launcher which can do unread counts. But the problem with that is the Google Now integration doesn't work with other launchers, so it's not really the same as GEL.

Home screen Chrome shortcuts not working

Ok, this is a weird one. On my Z3c, any shortcuts placed on a home screen using the Chrome browser's "Add to homescreen" feature only work if Chrome is not already running when the shortcut is used.
If Chrome is already loaded and has at least one tab open, tapping the homescreen shortcut only brings Chrome to the foreground, but no new tab is loaded with the web address specified by the shortcut.
Now for the weird part: removing updates for the Chrome app and reverting to the Chrome image shipped by Sony corrects the problem (at the cost of having to disable updates to Chrome in the Play Store to keep the problem from returning).
I've tried installing the Chrome Beta, but its homescreen shortcuts have the same problem.
I was about ready to file a bug report for Chrome, but decided to test my Nexus 5 to make sure I could reproduce the problem and, what do you know, the Nexus 5 doesn't exhibit this behavior.
Seems to be just the Sony running updated images of the Chrome app.
Can anyone else confirm not being able to get a Chrome-created web shortcut to work from the Sony home screens on the latest Play Store versions of Chrome, unless the Chrome app doesn't have any open tabs when the shortcut is tapped?

Did some searching and found other reports on Chromium project of this bug - everyone seems to be using Xperia devices that are reporting it.
https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=412405
Lack of responses here are kind of giving me the impression that either not many people extensively use home screen shortcuts to websites, or not all Z3c users are seeing the problem.

Google+ Contacts - Keep Contacts up to Date in Google+ settings Missing?

disclaimer: I'm stealing the title here from thafngame24's post because it's the only one that came up after a long series of google searches with my exact problem.
The deal is, until recently it seams, you were able to have your user avatar in android sync with your google+ profile pic.
Here's a quick and easy how-to of how it used to be:
http://veecards.com/blog/how-to-enable-google-contacts-sync/
But now the "Contacts" menu item along with "Keep contacts up to date" option is gone.
Currently I'm on Build version 9.8.0.151187131
Anyone else have this issue?
I'm having the same problem right now, I've tried to search for a solution but without success, I can't seem to find a way to link my google account to my android owner user account...
I have resolved by downloading and installing the 9.5 version, you can then enable that option and let the app update

This works, thank you
I also tested it by updating the app as you said, then changing my profile pic in g+ and it changed in android. Win!
Hopefully newer updates add this back - or at least hopefully they won't break the connection that's still there in the background.
Edit:
Google+ 9.5.x APKMirror link
