best rom/kernel for casual use (net/video/small games) - Galaxy Tab 8.9 General

Hello
So, i have a p7310. It was broken for 2 years (touch screen) but i succeed to replace it.
Now, since one month, i try to find the best ROM for my use : reading news and see videos the morning when i drink my coffee and playing small games when i go to the toilet
I tried lollipop (last rom from jolienard, thanks to the work!). Very smooth but videos doesn't work well
I tried old roms (for example CM11 unofficial). Videos are ok but performance are so bad compared to lollipop! (even with oc at 1400)
So which rom / kernel would be the best for me?
thanks by advance!

as nobody answered, i have to do the job by myself
The bench methodology is the following
factory reset
install ROM
install Gapps (if not included)
install supersu 2.46 (if not included)
boot
install antutu
install pcmark
install set cpu (set on boot, max 1400, interactive, deadline)
reboot
pcmark test
antutu test
Results are:
Last Jolinnard/Decaft ROM work perfectly for my usu. Thanks to them!!!

Have you tried comparing these results to the stock ICS (pure stock and modified [rooted, debloated, init.d scripts, etc.])?

--------------------
edit after 2 hours of search : i don't find official ICS ROM (in particular for france (XEF ended by PP i think))
Anyone knows where to find it?

new test with ICS and .... ICS win !!! But it's too hard to use it. So i stay on kitkat liquidsmooth

any chance you could share this rom: aosp-5.1.0-p5wifi-20150403 I can't find it anywhere anymore.

[Q] [I9001]BroodROM, Cranium or official ROM?

Hi guys! I'm new here in this forums and I'm buying my new SGS+ in a couple of weeks. I can see there aren't that many ROMS and custom firmwares, but the ones that exist are very good! I want to know if the official ROMS are fast and good for everyday usage, gaming and listening to music. I know that the custom ROMs like Cranium and BroodRom are super fast, but I always prefer official firmware. Please express your opinion and give me a suggestion. I have experience with flashing a SGS+, so it's not a problem for me.
Well, these custom ROMs are in fact just modded stock ROMs. So you can get some added AOSP apps and removed bloatware. CM development is really difficult as some devs already bricked their phones.
I personally wouldn't buy it again.
It's a quite decent phone but nothing special imo.

I know they're just soft-mods, but people say they're faster than official ROMs, because they contain some tweaks.
Yes, thats right. If you have some knowledge you could also tweak the stock ROM yourself as you like it. (Apart from things like CWM recovery etc.)
If you don't need all those Samsung bloatware then you could flash one of the ROMs you like.

Thank you all for your opinions! I had a very positive experience with one of your ROMs, so I think I will go for BroodROM.
BroodROM RC2 with the Cranium Kernel v6 1900MHz
That way you can overclock as you wish with the "no frills cpu control" app and set governors + i/o scheduler.
At least thats what i have on my SGS+ and i'm very happy with it
here's a benchmark screenshot of mine

Hi Senior Member xCi, this is my first Time, and i think i should be needing a help. i have already bought my samsung sgs+ a couple of weeks ago. and after that i've playin games , browsing , used my phoneetc. i've seen that sgs+ still slow on cpu, gpu and when i play hd games its getting hot in a 30 minutes after. but not like the old samsung galaxy s i9000 which is very slow and very hot when i play games like nfs shift. so i figured out that i wanted to upgrade/update it but there's no officially released update for sgs+ in my software update (Over In The Air) and in kies. but didnt do something and after that i've been thinking and began searching xda developers. and saw many development were created such as the tweaks (awesome), custom roms ( like Cranium Rc9 I've Watched It on Youtube/ BroodRom Here) i was really inspired and been thinking if i can do it alone (im so scared besides this my first time) so i can update my phone into more poweful tweaks like cranium rc9 or BroodRom and other tweaks mods for my sgs+. im starting and im a begginer and i really need help, sorry if im being noob or kinda stupid (〒︿〒) i was really confused when i was reading this post by Artem Russakovskii http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/0...d-phone-with-rom-manager-full-backup-restore/ he says that other customs roms have different installing procedure. can i apply sakindia's cranium rc9 following the steps of Artem. Besides I've Already Done The Rooting Procedure At forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S_Plus/GT-I9001 For My Samsung Galaxy S+ I9001. this is my first time but before i start doing something on my my phone i should ask someone like you who can give me a better advices and other tips in things like this.
-----------------------------------------------------------I Was Hoping I Can Find a Better & Clear Instruction's Installing Cranium Rc9 + Rc9 Kernel OR BroodRom + Cranium Kernel v6 1900MHz for my SGS+ I9001 From You DEVs! Out There . because my phone still lags and very hot when i played HD games and sometimes slow on menu when i quit some hd games. [Q] custom roms for note / which do you prefer ?

well i hope its ok to ask. i could install each and test and bla bla someday i may know. but i got some other things to do sometimes so ....
i come from desire just bought a note which seems quite nice yet. rooted and now the old problem which rom to use....
at the moment i use checkrom revo notehd 4 which isnt bad maybe im just used to cm...
i used cm7 for my desire which worked best for me (think i tried quite alot not all but alot) was quick, stable....
As there is just a cm9 beta which didnt work for my desire in the past i would just like to have a few feedbacks on which roms you use or like best and maybe a few words about why u use it (what makes it different from other rom)
hope it is ok to ask maybe its it is interesting for more notenewbies ?
thx
I'd say 4lph4 n3v3r d135 because:
- uses best kernel (currently: AbyssNote3.2 that can overclock/underclock from 100Mhz to 1.7Ghz)
- has less fancy icons than RocketRom and others
- updates frequently to deliver the latest firmware
- arranges to deliver the most useful tweaks we need
- see its page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424401
Stock, cm9 (when they release a final version) or wait for the ICS
I've tried a couple and nothing looked decent AND offer snappy speed.
The firmware has to match the serious look of the gNote. And the quick ROMs have a gipsy UI (no offence, just my subjective opinion)

RocketRom for me but with the stock theme don't think there is a better theme than the stock one atm at least for my taste

[Q] Rom with best battery performance?

Hey guys, i m new to your forum, so pls be nice to me :-D i just bought the i9001 for my girlfriend and i wanna flash a custom rom right away. My question now is, which rom is the most stable and offers the best battery performance? I dont wanna overclock it, since it seems to be fast enough, but as i already know from my lg device, is that battery is much better on cust roms. So i hope you can help me out and guide me the right direction. If you already have got a discussion thread about roms, pls guide me there, since i couldnt find it till now. Flashing and so on, seems far more complicated with samsung devices but i ll keep on reading, in order not to screw this beautiful device

Hi, try this UCM GingerBread Rom 2.1 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1457437). I have installed it in my SGS+ yesterday. For now this ROM seems to be the best battery and performance combination.
best battery for me was stock rom 2.3.5
I think you will have as many answers as there's customs ROM fo GS2... I have my GS2 since few weeks only and I already tested 5 ROMS to assess which one is the best for my own usage (performance / quality / stability / battery life, etc).
So I think the ROM which has the best match for someone's usage will not be the same than for you.
So far if I could give you a reco it would be for Gingermod, CheckROM v6 or just Stock ROM + Siyha Kernel. But again take it only as my own view which can be different for someone else

He asks for a rom for the sgs+ not the sgs2.
I think it doesn't really matter which rom you take. It does matter what governor and which I/O scheduler you take! change them with no frills cpu controll for the market.
Oh thanks your right, thank all of you guys, I think i ll read some more and try to flash first, when i have enough knowledge about the phone. As far as i got, i first of all need to flash the cust recovery, then pick a rom and either flash it via recovery, or client on pc. Depending on the rom. But i guess i ll take the one from first post, since i only want it to improve battery life and not the overall performance, or even oc, since it is a good phone already ;-) again, thank all of you so far :-D
One more thing, whats the best governor and iosched for you? I prefere interactivex and simple, for battery

Newly owned a SS Galaxy Note! What to do where to start?

Hello everyone,
I'm a new owner of another SS Galaxy Note, I used to be a BB user (the last one was a great Bold9900)
I'm a totally new in this section and as far as I can see the responsible of the Note is worse than the, let's say Iphone and Ipad. My gf has IP3Gs, the ROM is 5.1.1 and it's still fast enough, the response is quite fast, the sliding is instant etc. The ipad is very fast as it's The New Ipad.
My Note software version is 4.0.3 build DXLP5. Build DXLP9 - the newest SouthAsian version (for Vietnam). I can see that the Note responses not as fast as the Iphone, for example you open the Phone icon and it takes like 2 seconds to open, the slide to unlock is not as smooth and snappy.
Btw I have installed both the FREE and PAID version of Fruit and Ninja and I lost the game after few minutes of playing because the slides to cut are not instant as in Iphone, Ipad so I missed lot of fruits.
So to sum up it's not very smooth and snappy, instant. Other than that the Note is great and sexy, I wish I can make it faster and snapier, like the iOS is nearly instant, even the old IP3GS running the new and heavy 5.1.1 OS
I want to ask from where to start? Which custom ROM to use so my system become more responsible, instant and smooth?
I have read that the SpeedMOD kernel has good reviews, may I just install that Kernel on my stock ROM and my Note become more snappy and fast?
As I'm a noob in this section, I'm still afraid of going far like installing Custom ROMS so my fone become bricked...
I have a feeling that in my stock ROM untouched the Note sometimes needs seconds to think, after that it will proccess my order.
THank you for reading!

I use Franco kernel r5 with franco updater that allows me to overclock my Note to 1600 MHz.

So just the Stock ROM and the custom Kernel?
How is it feels like with the 1600 MHz instead of the stock 1400 Mhz?
I swear the Fruit and Ninja is soooo laggy that I missed the fruits and lost the game
And I'd like to ask: When for example - you use stock ROM with custom Kernel or you use custom ROM with custom Kernel and you decide to come back to stock ROM (new version release, or you come back to install another custom ROM etc etc) - how do you do the revert back?
I have been on this device for several days so still wondering, the 1st impression is that it's not very smooth, snappy and instant.

No I use Kingdroid rom ICS v2 and Franco kernel r5. With 1400 MHz, the quadrant score is about 4000 , with 1600 MHz, the quadrant score is about 4800. I do not know if you will have the same performance with stock rom.
Make sure you take the time to read up on the brick situations so you won't brick your brand new Note.

Thank you very mucho,
Is it possible I only do the SpeedMod kernel (I see the feedbacks indicating that it's better than the Franco) and my Note will be faster?
Once I only replace the Kernel, is it possible I update the stock ROM with another updated stock ROM version or custom ROM or I would have to come back to original stock and only then do the update?

If you flash a new ROM, it will flash the kernel that goes with it so you would need to re-flash speedmod or franco again.

Thank you,
1) Wich one do you think is better? Speed or Franco?
2) Will my fone be faster and more snappy, smooth (iphone like lol) if I use the stock 4.0.3 ROM + custom kernel
3) If I only flash the kernel (or I install the absolutelly new custom ROM), how do I come back to stock ROM?

1) I would say Franco because of OC capability but I haven't tested either.
2) I can't answer that. I hate the iPhone.
3) You just flash the stock ROM back and it will override the kernel. Just don't wipe data after you are on stock kernel.
4) I'm adding a number 4. Try CM9 build of something.

Lol,
1) Yeah coz I have been reading the feedbacks about SpeedMod 3-3 and seems like it's more stable
2) Ok let's take Ipad into consideration, what I'm trying to ask here is how to imrove the response of the Note. In fact the game fruit and ninja you will miss lot of fruits because the touch operations are not instant, the game is not laggy tho. Have a try
3) So from the Custom ROM just Install back the Stock ROM via Odin? In the Stock ROM if I wipe data (factory reset) there's possibility to brick the device right? I'm using the latest South-Asian version DXLP9 and I think I did the factory reset twice - thankfully the fone is working, but the laggy is still there.
4) Why you recommend to install a Custom ROM, the Stock + Custom kernel will not do the trick? I just want better battery and instant response

[Q] Got a few questions about this phone

i can get this phone around $110 under contract, so i got a few questions about it
1. how the AOSP rom with this phone, is it ok for daily use
if not
2. can viperfx and titanium backup be used in stock rom (rooted of course)
and lastly
3. how was the performance with stock rom vs aosp
hi ! the aosp by Ivan is good, fast and stable.
you can customize the MiUi as u wish, no worries
on aosp the benchmark score lower than the stock rom. both are good , fast, battery lasts for me for 5 hours Screen On-TIme . thats freaking incredible .
My advice, if u want u can buy it, its a beast for this price, but the drawback is the kernel remember : no kernel -> no custom roms !
I didn't try the aosp rom, but i can tell you for sure that that titanium backup is perfectly working with the stock rom, i didn't try viperfx but if it is the type of app that is very complex and it modify many android files, it may not work.
And if you want to try some xposed modules, the normal "xposed installer" itsn't compatible with the miui. You have to download another app call "wsm tool".
I am using viper with MIUI v32 stable since its release. No problem.
The good thing is Viper + Dirac is awesome.
