Excited to try video calling... - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

I'm hoping this advanced calling video works well on the S6. I hope it works as good as Facetime.

Works very well. Better than facetime since it works with iPhones as well. Doesn't work on all phones yet but works well on the compatible devices

Sweet!!! So it's currently able to be used on devices with Verizon prior to S6? I have never seen the option.

Definitely doesn't work with iPhones. Only between Verizon branded Android devices, while on Verizon LTE network.

I don't think I am. I'm almost certain that a Verizon note about VoLTE being so great was HD voice and Video regardless of phone you're using. I'll double check on that and post if I'm either right or wrong.
However, I'm 1000000% sure HD voice works fine because my business partner has an iPhone 6+ and I a GS6 Edge and we just hung up a call that was VoLTE.

- VoLTE will work on your side if you have a capable phone, regardless of whether the other party has a VoLTE device or not.
- HD Voice however will only happen within VoLTE-to-VoLTE calls within Verizon's LTE network.
- LTE Video calling, which is what we're talking about in this thread, will only work when calling another Verizon's LTE Video Calling enabled device, while on Verizon's LTE network.
- No iOS devices support Verizon's LTE Video Calling at this time, including iPhone 6.

Works great with my edge and wife's S5! Goodbye Skype!

I tried all weekend to video chat with my mother and her iPhone6 and it would absolutely not work. HD voice worked amazingly. iPhone's just don't have the ability to do it yet.

Does video calling use data?

Yes it uses data.

WiFi?
Does it only work on LTE? I can't seem to figure out how to do it. I'm on WiFi currently.

What I have found is you need to make a regular call. When the person connects and you're talking....hit the camera button on you your phone. It will say it's requesting video call.

You can't have video calling between Android and iPhone. Both different platforms. I kept on trying and trying and I found that out on HD video Q&A on Verizon site.

Verizon VoLTE

Just read about Verizons VoLTE rolling out soon finally. This enables much clearer calls and a new feature that actually might make me switch back to stock. Video Calls. i know we can do this with skype and oovoo and such but it will make it significantly easier to talk to loved ones that aren't on top of technology with native video calling in the dialer.
Are you excited for this feature? Don't care? Who really makes calls anymore anyways?

Saw that today, and my only response is... WTF? only works for verizon to verizon calls??? The call quality on verizon sucks big time - the bit-starved vocoder that they use is atrocious. Dare I say it, AMPS had better sound quality than the crap Verizon uses now. I have been hoping that the VoLTE would bring them at least on par with GSM call quality, but limiting it to only other verizon cellular customers is a joke. This may get the iphone uses all wet, hoping to surf and take a call simultaneously, but for most, it will turn out to be more fluff than substance....

My guess is they are doing peer to peer connections so hitting someone on another carrier wouldn't work. They should be able to convert VoLTE on the back end to hand off when not calling a Verizon customer though.. odd that wouldn't do that.
All the family i have uses verizon so to be it's no big deal. Does the clear voice only work Verizon to Verizon to?

LTE stays on while in a call?

At first i thought it was volte but then i had my friend call me from his landline which obviously doesn't have volte and my LTE never dropped to regular 4g like on my lg g3 or galaxy s5. The data is a little slower during calls but i was curious if anyone else noticed this?
thats how its supposed to work
Verizon and AT&T restrict you to only using VoLTE when both parties are on VoLTE, but T-Mobile has no such restriction.

They're working on making Verizon and AT&T devices able to make VoLTE calls to each other, but I have no idea why they have this restriction in the first place when T-Mobile devices are able to make VoLTE calls to landlines, Verizon/AT&T/Sprint customers, etc... already.
who'da thunk that Tmobile is doing something BETTER than the "big 2"!!!!
LTE always in calls even to a few I made overseas landlines.
However once it did drop to wcdma when I initiated a call.
Wonder why? All calls were at home location .

Verizon Advanced Calling 1.0 for Nexus 6

I have yet to switch my Verizon LTE Nano SIM to my Nexus 6 but I was wondering if Advanced Calling 1.0 is functioning, particularly the HD calling feature. Pretty hard to go back ever since having it with my iPhone 6 Plus.

Greetings from the Bay Area. I stuck my Verizon SIM in my T-Mobile Nexus 6 and I couldn't figure out how to tell if HD Voice was working (since it was too early to call my wife), though when I made a call it switched to 1x in the notification bar. That's a bad sign. I'll do some more testing today and report back. I was especially curious about this as I too I find HD Voice to be awesome on my iPhone 6.
-Collin-
if its anything like tmobiles hd calling, which works on the n6 btw, both phones have to have it before it works. if only one of the 2 phones in the conversation has it, it wont work.
VZW user here. I can confirm that all of the advanced features are not working at this time. In fact the phone is not even capable of simultaneous voice and data.
This is true of several new phones on Verizon including the Droid Turbo, which of course is the carrier locked 5.2 inch version of the Nexus 6. In all likelyhood the Nexus 6 will not see VoLTE or simultaneous voice and data unless Verizon finds it in their hearts to get an update to us N6 users that will turn those things on for us.
I knew all this going in but i hold out hope that Verizon will carry the phone, which would mean an update will eventually hit.
However, should they not carry it I will be ok with the phone as is.

the phone is very capable of phone service and data at the same time. and the phone is compatible to volte. on all other providers besides verizon, it can get voice and data at the same time(verizon is cdma and doesnt support it). that said, verizons volte is just starting to make it out. when you get volte in your area, you will be able to make calls and get data at the same time.
Not true, I have volte on my area and used successfully in the iPhone 6 plus but it does not work on my nexus 6, even after going in and adding advanced calling on my line.

odd, ive talked to a few using their lte lines to connect calls over volte.
Until Verizon issues an update for the Nexus 6, the feature won't work, period.
I'm assuming Google will push out an update that enables it if you are using a verizon SIM, but who knows.
Just wait. If it's a feature you need, you'll have to wait until Verizon officially supports the device.

Verizon phones have had data and voice at the same time in the past, but some newer android phones (Nexus 6, Moto X 2014, G3) don't have it, yet. VoLTE is a bit different, but also limited to certain devices.
This article might help a little:

It it software based e.g. is there an .apk on the droid turbo that allows for it to work? or is it on the core android [system] level that needs to be baked in at the time of building the rom? Obviously where I am going with this is if it's something installed, on the droid turbo for example, can we just lift off those files off and work to get it work in AOSP land?
No there isn't. The Turbo doesn't support it yet. Unfortunately you're going to have to be patient.

I have not tested this, but usually "ro.ril.enable.amr.wideband=1" in build.prop does the trick.
Coming from Beans I would Like to Know When they begin building a rom will they be able to port this in from something like the new Droid that has this feature working. I Know the Alliance team has the N6

you cant "enable" it. its automatically enabled if its in your area. problem is that both caller and receiver need to have this for it to work.

Gotcha ... Thanks for responding. I've got one coworker that's on T-Mobile as well and their device must have it as well because when I talk to them the call is so loud and clear I have to lower the volume! lol

If the N6 supports volte and we are using it before vzw sales the device directly, is Google able to help us activate this feature? Bc i dont see vzw giving an update to phones that are unrecognized and showing as non vzw devices.
Sooo.... I am wondering if volte support will ever work on those of us who chose not to wait til vzw releases their version of the nexus 6?
May be the price we had to pay to get a non tramp stamped nexus without any carrier customizations and bloat.....

I'm just happy my Nexus 6 hasnt been violated by Verizon. They never got their dirty little hands on it. It's so nice having a phone with No bloatware.
Verizon will eventually carry the Nexus 6 and will eventually send out the Software update which enables VoLTE. I'm not sure if we will get that update? But we shall see what happens

HD voice?

Is it possible to enable HD voice support on Nexus 6?
I'm pretty sure it works for me already. On Rogers.
Thanks for your reply.
I'm on Telenor network in Norway and I don't think it's working for me. It worked with my Note 3 before.
Is it any way to check if it is activated?
its all dependent on your provider. if it is available in your area, and both the caller and receiver have it included(in their phone), it will automatically use the hd calling. if only one person has it available, then it will not be used.
HD Voice generally works with two conditions
1. Phones have to support HD voice. I think newer iphones and some new androids like N6.
2. The two callers have to be on the same carrier. tmobile to tmobile. ATT to ATT, Verizon to Verizon.
Wait, I think there needs to be a third point. Data needs to be also on?

3rd.. both sides of the call have to have the feature.

unlocked on Verizon

I'm not really new to this. I would always buy the phones, then root them when root was available. My question is if I buy the unlocked version and have it on Verizon, does anyone know what features won't work? Like I believe wifi calling on tmobile won't. But what about Verizon?
I THINK similarly, HD calling and Wifi calling won't work. I remember this from other discussions of unlocked Galaxy devices on Verizon.

Ok, thanks.... That is the problem I'm having cause I don't know about that part. Like I said, I normally just buy the phones then root them when root is available, but the s8 never got it or it took so long I didn't worry about it anymore. But I'm going overseas soon and would like to just swap sims and not worry about international charges
HD calling and volte should work. wifi calling a visual voicemail won't. check Samsungs page for compatibility.
my pixel 2 unlocked has EVERYTHING working on Verizon tho. dunno why.

Features you lose with unlocked phone on verizon network.
Visual Voicemail (VVM)
LTE Video Calling
Enhanced Address Book
VoWiFi (WiFi calling)
Family Base
Family Locator
that's worth it. no big deal except maybe wifi calling.

My unlocked note 9 on Verizon didn't have any features except HD calling and VoLTE. I worked with Verizon tech support forever, they couldn't figure it out. They indicated it was a Samsung issue. Samsung said it was a Verizon issue. I sold it on swappa then got a Verizon branded one because I need WiFi calling and texting.
I really hope my unlocked S10 plus isn't the same.

I think Video Calling and Visual Voice Mail are for Post-Paid accounts only. I'm on Pre-Paid.
Plus I can use one of several other apps to video call, so I don't miss it. VoLTE and WiFi calling work great.
I can confirm that Wi-Fi calling IS indeed working on my unlocked S10+ on Verizon. Imagine that! The only thing I'm missing is Verizon's native video calling but that feature is so useless that it's not even worth mentioning.
Also, this thread is helpful describing all the features that work on Verizon:
