Backup management (for flashaholics) - Galaxy Note 4 General

Backup management (for Flashaholics)
Hi all,
The amount of questions on this forum that could have been avoided by proper backups is alarming.
I have been helping friends, family and coworkers with their phones for a while and what I have noticed is that many people have little or no idea of backup management. Some have backups of their contacts and pictures on 4 different cloud services which all auto upload their info burning lots of data and battery.
Others have little or no backups and get in trouble when flashing a ROM or dropping their phone in the toilet (yes that does actually happen folks)
Especially when flashing ROMs on your rooted device, it’s important to manage your backups in a logical way. In the description below I’ll explain how I manage my backups for apps, contacts, pictures, and full Nandroid backups in a logical way.
I am assuming the people reading this already have root and TRWP recovery on their phone. If that is not the case but you would like to have those, please follow the link to a great tutorial from zedomax on how to get those.
Contacts:
When storing contacts on your phone, you can choose were you want this contact to be stored. Make sure you always use the same account to store contacts so you won’t have them devided over 3 or 4 accounts. Personally I just choose my gmail account as this is the first thing you will install on any new phone.
Under settings /cloud you can see were your contacts and data is backed up manually or automatically. Make sure you check these settings so your device will backup regularly when on wifi.
If you do have your contacts shattered over several accounts now, then the contacts optimizer app can help you fix this. It can remove double contacts or merge them together. The app also makes it possible move contacts from one account to another, or to move all contacts between accounts (the pro version). Be aware of the fact that some pictures you have stored with your contacts can get lost during the transition.
Her the playstore link for the app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.compelson.optimizer
Pictures and video’s:
Same story here. Choose one cloud service to auto upload all you’re your media files. I have seen phones that had installed 4 cloud services, all of which would auto upload the pictures. Just choose one and stick to it.
Personally, I will auto upload my pictures and videos to dropbox but any service will do.
TWRP recovery
Please make sure you have the latest version of TWRP installed on your phone. For some ROMs it won’t make a difference but for others it does. For example CM12 official will not install on an old version of TWRP.
You can find the newest version for your device here:
http://www.techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/
Before flashing a new ROM ALWAYS make a full backup with TWRP. This way you are safe when something goes wrong. The backup will contain all your apps, but also your ROM and your recovery.
Make sure you give your ROM a name you can actually understand 3 months from now.
For example, when having flashed CM12 official without any apps or settings installed, you could call it:
CM12 official Fresh install
Or when having installed all your apps and put your settings in place:
CM12 official Full install
After flashing a ROM, I will run it, let the playstore do the updates and make a fresh backup. This way I can get back to the original installation quickly.
Be aware that when restoring a TRWP recovery, you will not only restore your apps but also your ROM. To have your apps separately you will need another tool.
Titanium Backup
Although there are many backup apps, and I have tried most of them titanium backup seems to be one that I keep returning to. It simply has the most options and I use it a lot.
Playstore link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup
Full You Tube tutorial:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZEa10WtFng
As storage space is no longer an issue, I make seperate backups for each ROM I use. This simply saves a lot of time updating apps from the playstore and decreases the amount of apps I have to reinstall when switching from say a Kitkat 4.4 to a Lollipop ROM.
By managing the backups in separate folders I can let titanium backup scan for the location of the backup folder, and pick the right one.
You do this by going to:
Menu,
Preferences,
Backup folder location
Detect (button)
Whole device
Titanium will find the folders and let you choose:
I usually call the Folders: TTBU and the first 2 letters of the ROM
In this picture you the folders for CM 12 and AllianceROM

}
Storagespace:
With your note 4 it is possible to use a 128GB microSD card. All the files you can store on your SD will be unaffected when flashing a new ROM so use it for everything you want to keep available.
Another option is to copy all the needed files to your PC, whatever suits you best.
So do not worry about the storage on you phone!
Using this method I now have:
Contacts in 1 place
Pictures and media files in 1 place
Nandroid backups before and after with logical names
Titanium Backup (separate folder per ROM)
Whatever happens to my phone I can get it back to were I want it to be in under 10 minutes.
This saves you from a lot of asking for help on XDA developers.
I am curious to see how others manage their backups.

PIM Backup application v2.6 [Available]

Last update: 21 Dec 2007
PIM Backup application
http://www.dotfred.net/
The PIM backup application is a tool that allows to backup/restore personal information stored on windows mobile based pocket devices. Concerning the personal information, I refer to contacts, appointments, tasks, messages, calls,...
The backup is totally independent of the version of Windows Mobile running on the device and independent of the device itself. The backup is also independent of the language used on the device. You can easily backup on a Chinese device and restore in a German one.
There are two kinds of backups. The binary based backup has been implemented in order to have a backup/restore process which is fast and more reliable, the disadvantage being that the backup contents cannot be easily modified or viewed.
The text based backup has been implemented in order to see/edit the contents on a pc for instance.

Download PIM backup v2.6 for WM5 & WM6
History:
Version 2.6:
- fix bug in binary restore of contacts (birthday overwritten by anniversary)
- fix bug in binary/text restore of appointments (status, reminder not correct)
- fix bug in zip utility => unicode compliant
- fix bug in restore of tasks (wm2003se only) for (partially) undated tasks
- fix bug in restore of messages (only messages from an unknown account are discarded)
- fix bug in csv contacts import (csv coming from another application)
- fix bug in restore of speed dials (wm6 only)
- added restore custom files individual selection
Use notice:
The exe contained in the zip file, should be copied and launched on the pocket pc, and not on a pc.
If you have any comments, bugs report, suggestions, problems, then you could send them to this address [email protected], I will carefully consider them.
TODO:
MMS Backup/restore doesn't work!
- fix problem with mms "attachments" which are stored on disk but are not considered as attachments in the cemail.vol (wonderful!)
Arcsoft MMS software uses own-defined properties (blobs) in pmailMsgs table in cemail.vol but I cannot decipher them for the moment.
- conversion of text backups <-> binary backups
Features:
- backup/restore appointments
- backup/restore call logs
- backup/restore contacts
- backup/restore messages (SMS, Mails, ...) NEW !!!
- backup/restore speed dials
- backup/restore tasks
- backup/restore custom files
Restore contacts:
It is possible now to restore a text file containing contacts backed up from other applications, like in Outlook Express, the only constraint is that the first line should contain the fields and the fields need a separator. (See screenshots). The tool allows to map default fields to fields found in the file. It is possible now to insert duplicates.
Backup messages:
The mail database is completely parsed to retrieve all the messages stored in every directory and subdirectory. It is possible to select which account and directories should be backed up. You can save attachments as wel if they exist on the pocket pc.
Restore messages:
Same as the backup, you can select which account and directories should be restored to the device. Caution, if an account doesn't exist on the pocket pc, this application will discard the messages that belong to that account.
Scheduled backup:
It is possible to schedule a backup, each day of the week and this at a specific hour. If the pocket pc is suspended, it will wake up and do the backup. You can eventually control the number of backups to keep and switch off the pocket pc after the scheduled backup is finished.
The schedule backup creates a notification that can be cleared via the Options Menu.
File types:
There is only one file type now, which is .pib (Personal Information Backup), in fact it is just a zip file (so you can open it with a zip application) which contain the different text files used in PPCBckpContacts, so you can still extract these files, edit them on a pc using Excel or Notepad and eventually restore them without putting them back in the .pib file.
May i ask what the following mean:-
-Set as default backup folder
-create tmp files in memory (why?
-keep selected backup items (which and why?)
-keep selected messages accounts and folders (the ones I created in my sms inbox?)
Thanks and great app.
Thanks,I use it since 2 days and it works fine, but it's already available in the main thread : look here.

yeah me too, but its still not noticed, neither in the main post (as a title update) or by ROM cookers.
Maybe they are on holidays lol !
Great,
I'll be updating this on my TyTN II.
But does anybody know an application that can backup the wireless profiles?
Or maybe where to find the config data so I can back it up through 'custom' backup folder maybe?
that would be great because I need them backed up before I can load another rom on ...
thanks upfront and a Merry Christmas to all!

Unresolved as far as i know

I've seen some people posting some of the problems I've been experiencing, and as of yet, with out any satisfactory solution.
This is what I do from Amon Ra's Recovery 1.2.3:
1. perform Nandroid Backup
2. backup apps on Ext to Fat32
3. Wipe my 2nd Ext...install another ROM
4. Restore apps from Fat32 back to Ext
Now all my apps will be present in the App Tray.
Some are available for use while some are not. The ones that are not will have a "whitish" icon with a "cog" on it, where the icon for the app used to be. From what I understand, this has to do with paid and non-paid apps. That's cool. Just re-install.
But the problem is, when I attempt to install "some of the whitish" apps, a notification on the screen says it's already installed. When I attempt to "uninstall some of the other whitish" apps, both the install and uninstall boxes are grayed out.
The other thing is this....when I go into settings>applications>manage applications...the same apps I want to uninstall aren't on the list to choose from. I have an uninstaller app and some are on there and some aren't. The ones that are on the list I don't have a problem uninstalling and re-installing.
An example is an app called "Cardar". It's on my home screen but doesn't show up on the manage application list or under the uninstall app. I have a few apps like that that I can't find. Pocket DJ Full is another.
One other issue I'm having is when I receive a call I'll get an option to force close the program the dialer utilizes. If I hit the green button to answer the call, I can accept the call, have my convo, then press the end button or press "force close". to hang up. My email is doing the same thing when I try to enter my account info. The messaging program that comes stock is doing the same thing.
Any ideas? Any solutions? Any and everything that has worked for all of you is welcome as a suggestion/solution to my problems.
Thanks in advance. I appreciate the assistance.
Since it sounds like you are having so many problems I would wipe the card and repartition it, wipe phone, and reflash the rom. It might be a ***** going back in and reinstalling your apps but at least you would know it's done properly.
Exactly what I was trying to avoid. Was trying to see if I could get replies to deal with the individual issues and I'd correct them one by one.
Quick question... if I do a factory reset will that wipe out my Amon Ra Recovery? As far as apps I have backed up to the Fat32. I know the Fat32 is on the SDcard but stranger things have happened when we dibble and dabble in this thing we call modding.

No it won't wipe out your recovery.
NO you will not loose your recovery.... As far as I've been seeing the Ra recovery is not fully wiping the ext ,been noticing a lot of people with the same issue ... re-partition your sd-card or just manually clear your ext from console by >
mount /system/sd
rm -rf /system/sd/*
this will clear all your apps off your ext... The trick is when you first sign in after a wipe wait for the sync , after open your market app go to downloads and all your apps will be there , they will say FREE (purchased apps are always there ) ,,, once you don't back out of that screen you have all your downloaded apps in one place for reinstall... its a pain I know ,but its the only way to really get a clean install ,as I don't like any of the backup apps .....
Hope this helps.,.,.,
how come no one ever suggested a fix_permissions for this, on ra's image it is the fix uid mismatches. sorry when i hear fc i automaticlly think try fixing permissions
hahaha I just saw your location grid. That ain't reverand like
again, you guys are thinking of priets, reverends are allowed to do whatever they want, we can get booty, lapdances and hookers

Appreciate the help. The thing with the market (staying on that page to retain apps) I've known about. And I think that's the only way to really retain all your apps at this point in the game.
Did the fix permissions thing too. No dice.

my first post...long time lurker though.
try clearing your dalvik-cache too. from what I've read the 16GB cards don't take too well to partitioning, so that may be an issue as well (I've got one as well, partitioned and it lags a lot, considering just going back to a single partition). You could also trying to fsck your ext2 partition.

Removing apps via Recovery

All,
Since 6.0, Google has made a change to the N6 to not allow any modifications to the system partition. This is a bit frustrating as there is only 16MB left on system partition. There are some apps I would like to remove from my phone (G+, various language apks, google newstand, google play games) in order to increase the system partition. I have tried Titanium Backup without any success.
Has anyone else tried removing apps via recovery?
Flash or boot TWRP, then mount system and wreak havoc. Happy massacre.
istperson, can you expand on that a bit please? I've always used TiBU to freeze bloatware (Games, Pinyin, Korean Input, blah, blah, blah), but if I could usefully just delete them that would be a bonus.
Do you mean just go into TWRP and delete them? Is there any reason that this wouldn't work in, for example, Root Explorer or Solid Explorer? Why recovery in particular? Because you're outside the OS?

I would prefer to do this via a zip/script. I just need to figure out how to do that.
Okay.

Is this on stock ROM only? If I flash cm13 will I have this problem? Or is this 6.0 in general. I'm sorry I'm flashing a friends phone on a few days and am attempting to learn this device fast.

Can't you uninstall directly from TiBu?
Well, there's an "uninstall" button that I've never tried... - thanks for the reminder.
I was just wondering about the technical side. If the OS is active, as it is if I use the TiBU method, does it do everything that istperson's TWRP suggestion would do outside the OS?
Maybe I'll have a go at TiBU to see if it actually does free up space.

I routinely remove docs, sheets, and slides when I install an update which opens up ~200mb for things and they're all conveniently located close to eachother alphabetically in /system/app/Editordocs, editorsheets, editorslides. Just go into the file manager in TWRP after mounting /system and click into the folders hit select and then delete for all 3. Tada easy. language keyboards like pinyinIME, JapaneseInput, HindiIME are located in the same location along with Newsstand, G+ is called PlusOne, PlayGames etc.
As for zip/script to do it idk what to tell you, not my forte.
TiBup pretty much does/did the exact same thing as above not sure if it only removed the apk's or whether it just took out the whole folder. I do know it would never put the apps back the way they were and they almost never worked if you tried restoring them.

In Marshmallow you need a permissive kernel to remount system as rw when Android is running, and everything goes in the direction to disable this. And I think this is a good thing, because with all the news of malware form Google Play, that you can acquire in an official way, imagine what they can do with permissive kernels.
So it's the best if we accept, that we can only modify system by flashing it from fastboot, or by mounting it in custom recovery.

If you could please elaborate, in which way did this manifest exactly?
Strange, that. After reading your post, istperson (thank you) I thought I'd go in and destroy my N10 by running amok in TWRP. I did press "Mount" and got a screen which offered me very little, certainly not a list of directories. It looked pretty much like a display (i.e. non-update) screen with nothing interactive except "Return". In the end I just went into Advanced/File Manager and created havoc in there, deleting useless keyboards, Docs, Sheets, etc., so far with no apparent ill effect.

So if I boot into TWRP and press mount then I get a list of available volumes:

}
After ticking 'system', in file manager then it appears in the folder list, and entering it, there are the apps:
Ah, I think I see... I guess you mean that if I don't tick "system" then when I go into File Manager the system partition isn't available?
I was thinking more along the lines of "Tick system, it will immediately display the system partition", whereas what you mean is "Tick system, return, go to File Manager, edit system" - right? That's actually what I did, so thanks for that pointer.

Can't restore encrypted Titanium Backup backup from Google Drive on new phone

Hi guys,
first of all, I'm german and dont know if i translate all Titanium Backup texts right. So sorry if you dont understand everything, but I try my best
Now, i got a little problem here. I've used Titanium Backup on my S3 to create an encrypted backup of my apps and sync it to Google Drive. Several days ago my S3 did break and I bought a new one, a Nexus 6. Now I wanted to restore my Apps from the backup. What I did first is to sync the backup files from my Google Drive via Titanium Backup. That went fine and made no problems at all. Via a file browser I can see the backup files on my phone. The path to the backup folder is set right in Titanium Backup. I can also verify the backup files in TB succesfully with the passphrase. But when I try to batch restore the backups I cant. In TB in the list with all these batch actions I wanted to use "restore missing Apps with Data" then select all the Apps and let TB do its job. But I cant, after the "restore missing Apps..." there is a 0. It seems like it is not recognizing my backups files here...
What could the problem be?
Help would be greatly appreciated here!
upload your backup to drive, then restore your backup from drive to your n6. dont batch restore from your phone, restore from drive. your backup is there, not on your phone.
Dont know what you mean. The backup is on my n6. The backup was on Google Drive, but I synced it to my TB backup folder on my phone that is set as my backup folder in TB. Also i dont see a possibility to directly restore apps from Google Drive.

I have not used titanium backup since marshmallow came out but if I am understanding correctly the 0 you are referring to is in the progress bar during the restore operation. I had an issue like that in lollipop and what fixed it was setting kernel to permissive using the SELinux mode changer app. Last I heard though that app no longer works as intended on marshmallow with the new systemless SuperSU rooting method. There are a few permissive kernels floating around you could use. I think elementalx still has the permissive option on install, Hellscore has a permissive version of its zip.
No, I mean this in the restore section:

You need to restore manually.
Apps will be restored on your N6 after a factory reset when you login with your Gmail account.
When the setup of your N6 is finished you can restore data files on the virtual sdcard.

honestly, i havent used TB to back up in a long time. i did make a backup that i later zipped up(restored it in twrp recovery) one time last year. but google does a pretty good job at restoring apps, system settings, and wallpaper. for me at least
Already checked that, there is no filter set in TB.
Also in this tab i can see the backups, but I can not restore it. Maybe its a problem that I made the backups with Android 5.1.1 and have now 6.0.1?

it still does, depending on what you select of course. i like the idea of backing up then making a twrp flashable zip. it all gets reinstalled in one shot, a few seconds.

Do you do this through Titanium Backup using 'Create "update.zip" from app and data backups' under batch actions or a different way?

under batch options. first, i make a regular titanium backup, then i go back into batch options and press create update.zip. this zips up your backup into a twrp flashable.
Thanks, I figured that was how you did it but I wanted to make sure.

if you are rooted, titanium backup is outstanding

Agreed, I've always used this to take snapshots and it's fantastic.
I too am on the hunt for something that can do this without root. I don't think it exists.
Titanium backup hasn't been updated since 2019. Use Swift Backup, it's the best out there
The subject is : Backup APPDATA without root.
- Titanium backup doesn't work
- Swift Backup doesn't work
- Helium Backup & Sync (which was the ONLY app that could do that easily) doesn't work on Android 10+
As far as I know, there isn't any "app" that can do that anymore.
The ONLY reliable way is through ADB, either via a full backup, or app by app using "adb backup -apk -shared -all -f <filepath>/backup.ab"

And how do you restore?
Why missing Smart Switch by Samsung only?

IMO, it's the worst solution, although it'll always be better than no backup at all.
It's not cross-device, so if you lose your phone, you can't switch brands, you have to buy another Samsung
The backup files are encrypted, you can't have an emergency restore on any other device
It's still a good choice, but people don't usually know those limitations when making a backup in the first place.
I'd rather have a very good app (with an adb privilege command or something like that) which can be used by anyone, than a proprietary solution (or root. root will never disapoint IMO)

Then how about Google backup? I have never used (Indeed never using non rooted device) but should backup app +data and across all Android

I would sure like to know if it does indeed backup and restore data also. I've also only used rooted devices and I've never seen anyone report anything about Google backup.
As for Samsung smart switch, it doesn't do data, only app, I remember.

Recently someone somewhere reported that smart switch didn't restore data. But that might have changed. I wish it did.
As for Google. Yes, I know that say this. But I've never tried and I highly doubt that they do a good job in that regard. But who knows...
Please, someone who has tried them, report here.
Please
As someone who had to used Google Backup to switch to my S21U, I can assure you that APPDATA can't make 24Mb for more than 200 apps. I believe it might save the tiniest amount of appdata, but haven't seen it restore anything (apps were clean on restore)
Samsung Smart switch DOES backup appdata, you can check for it in the backup folder you selected. I didn't fully check for appdata of system apps vs user apps, tho.

So Google backup cannot restore data. Only apps.
You mentioned that smart switch will backup data. But did you try to restore it? And does it work?

I have tried two apps y'day(N20 to S21 with USB backup option) , both restored but one with data other's only app. Yet can't say what exact rule applies. still it seems best way to restore on non rooted device. Probably It can backup from non samsung devices too (including iOS)but it can restore only on samsung if I am not wrong.

Thank you.
Some of my apps have pages and pages of settings. I'll never use a phone without root for that reason. Backup&restore apps that use root are the only way and are essential...

Yep. Testing different OS' with different configurations then snapshotting with Titanium has been my goto for years. Love that workflow.

Titanium is outdated now (I have used for almost a decade), specifically on A12 and it's been nearly 2 yrs, there is no support for splitted apks
Swift BAckup is on top now.
