Please help - really wanna change my phone's OS ;( - HTC Desire 510

I bought an HTC Desire 510 few months ago cause my Xperia ARC died (was the best phone I ever had).
Now I am very disappointed with the HTC 510, mainly cause of it's awful operating system bundled by google ALL OVER the place
The user interface is a one big disaster, so much annoying and unnecessary stuff... besides the annoying bloatware (parental control app? srsly?)
I really wanna root this phone and change it's OS to those similar of gingerbreed, cyanogen etc but I don't know how to do this with my current phone
and don't even know what custom operating systems are available for the model I have.
What annoys me about the user interface:
*Often lowers the earphone music volume without my permission then gives me this annoying warning that making it higher will damage my hearing - srsly?
*Screen tends to lower it's lighting and back again by itself while I use the phone
*A button at the bottom of the menu that looks like a "home logo" will open somekind of useless google page each time I drag that button up by mistake.
*Terrible and irremovable Gallery app, not to mention it displays images in uncomfortable way, it also features a slideshow which often plays automatically without me asking it to each time I enter a photo album.
*Poorly made irremovable alarm clock app
*Other forced google apps installed on my phone which i don't use and can't just get rid of
*Bad just bad option of organizing apps, well for me atleast, back on my Xperia ARC I used to organize my apps by "commonly used apps" feature, went great, here it's just wacky, it doesn't do it automatically after you set it to organize the following way. So I find myself surfing through all the useless apps to find the app I need at the app menu.
Can anyone give me guidance or recommendation for an alternative Operating System I could replace this horrific google product infecting my phone since I bought it?
I presume this phone would become amazing with a new custom OS, did anyone changed the OS on their HTC 510? if yes what you use and how is it?
Also I know to root this device you first need to unlock the bootloader, is there anything else important I need to know when rooting it?

Dude really. Maybe you should have checked out the forums of this model B4 you bought it. That being said, since you say you are unlocked and rooted then doing a quick search should get you everything you need to rid yourself of all that is bothering you. Depending on what you have and with whom there are some pretty good options out there to use. Check it out and start doing it.
Or you could just throw your phone in the lake, buy and Iphone and forget about it. Bam!

I actually planned to buy Galaxy 3, heard it was good but also had slow loading problems, then I was offered an alternative of this HTC for the same price and faster working system. It was a spontaneous buy.
And I thought buying an Iphone but changed my mind cause of the "itunes" thing.

Ok, how do I deal with the "menu" thing where I want to authomatically always to arrange my icons by last used but cant right now?
I tried themes, but those are so intrusive and full of advertising, well those I tried so far.. (if there are any good ones to recommend I'd give a try) and how about disabling the annoying requests of updates I don't even need? <--(forgot to mention this issue) And how about issues 1-3 I mentioned? any idea how i deal with those then? You talk as if it's so easy, show me then.
About the lake.. better to throw to those who came up with this terrible phone idea

All I can say (and I never said it was easy) is for you to subscribe to all of the HTC 510 Forums and start reading thru the threads. In your case, the most helpful one being this one..."Help & Troubleshooting" if you can not find answers to your particular questions then I would assume that means we just aren't there yet. This is a pretty new device after all. I wouldnt know about themes being I am on custom ROM and that is not an option. You should maybe go for the Unlock and root your phone method. Try out some of the ROMs available. I believe that will alleviate many of your issues since the stock ROM that came with these units have multiple issues. Many of them are the same ones you are experiencing. I wish you well and Read, Read, Read.
Good Luck

You should definitely read through the forums if you haven't so far. I have read/skimmed every thread here about our phone and I almost have no questions or concerns except for some ideas for a couple of issues that haven't been brought up yet or just not yet done.
I only use Sense Home or Dodol Launcher and they both don't have the option to sort by last used, check out Nova, Apex, or some other launcher.
As far as the update is concerned, you can follow this post by LarryBoyG, if you plan to stay on stock. I'm sure a custom ROM will be built that includes the update, unless everyone just wants to wait for Lollipop.

X2 a.k.a: The FailTrain

Hello, you Gods in the mobile development world!
IN about 8 days I will get an Xperia X2 from my company and from what I saw when I searched around on the wonderful World Wide Web, is that this phone has some really annoying errors.
And as a person that have been useing the HD2 for some time now, this probably will be the end of whats left of my nervs...
Anyway, as for the question;
What happens if I try to use a X1 ROM developed by you guys? Willl the Failtrain end in a BRICK wall? Or is there any chance of success? Is there anything I can do to increase the chances for a victory? <- Apart from the obvious, just **** in trying to do something about it and wait for an official update aka move on with my life... (or maby throw the phone out in the snow?)
I'm Willing (of course) to tell u whatever information you need about the phone.
There must be other like me- that have tryed or is willing to...?
Any Cabs that work?
Maby someone could post a sticky for stuff that work on the X2?
Cheers mates!
mm.. and sorry for the spelling. English is my 3rd language and speaking is one thing.. typing somthing els!
Maybe I should simply send it to any of you ROM developers....
Why are you calling it the failtrain?
Why would you want an x1 rom with outdated stuff on an x2 any way?
And the x2 will get custom roms too (any time when it gets hard spl'ed)
Just wait .. dont throw it in the snow and if you plan on doing that might as well sell it on ebay?
You could just stick with the hd2 any way its better in everything. (Ok no hardware keyboard)
Hi, i'm an X2 owner and i'm also inclined to call it the failtrain. I've been lurking here a short while but i've not really seen many of its issues documented. Or probably i've been lazy and missed it.
I've not much time to detail its issues now, will just point out some main points. The biggest grouse any X2 owner will have is that the software just feels so glitchy. My phone was hanging on the lock screen. I.e. after locking my phone, it will without fail, at least once a day, crash while on the lock screen. There is no fix except to take out the battery. After hard resetting via battery replacement, you've gotta reset it once more to clear the error completely.
Daily.
I've seen some other users bring up the fact that the screen does not wake up upon receiving text messages. Oh and even the text message alert can hang, i.e. half of it will play, and end abruptly. When you next do an action involving any alert sound, the remaining part will play as well.
If this doesnt reek of an incomplete product, i don't know what does.
I've reset my phone via SEUS. It is the same firmware version as what was in the box, though having done that the phone lock problem has stopped, so far.
But this phone does show a lot of promise. As a former X1 user, the X2 surely is a step in the right direction, in terms of polish and interface. Of course this assumes that SE gets its act together and push out decent firmware, of which there is no news.
Until then, the X2 is quite the disappointment.

Yes they are:

Two major updates.
Thx doministry.
To bad that it takes SE that long to upgrade the phone to 6.5.2 and 6.5.3 ...
I'm getting realy tierd of all these phone companys pumping out phones and then just stop updating there softwere- exept that ****ty phone from that plastic-design company with a fruit as there trademark.. and maby HTC that seems to be a more reliable company for each year that passes. (Well.. maby its just me..)
Well, it's not really necessary to throw in on the snow or sell it somewhere. Just keep it in your locker room or somewhere safe and get back to it until XDA and ROM Chefs start to put a special thread here.
It's Microsoft's Windows Mobile anyway and not Toyota.
id suggest that when you get your X2, have a quick play with it and see what you think. but then put it away until march when the first update comes out. its a pretty good phone but judging by your first post i doubt you could put up with the few bugs that are still present.

Well... if it had been made in Japan you could have fixed it with glue... (There is a Swedish saying: if you can not fix it with tape or glue - then it's not worth repairing...)

WM 6.5.3 was announced officially few days back,

[Q] Hi all! quick question...

hi guys,
with the demise of my beloved HD2 going the poor way of the dodo and the fact that for the last year ive stuck with WP7, i decided to bite the bullet and spend a "fraction" more (?!?) on a real WP7 device, aka the Focus S rather than the "slightly" cheaper HD2
So anyhow, since this is a somewhat smaller community than the HD2 i figured id say hello to you all.
now my device is winging its way over the pond at the mo so i dont actually have it but im interested in knowing what we DONT know about it.
yup, i see plenty of threads on inter-op and dev unlock, SIM unlock, de branding, MMS AND ICS im interested in what doesnt work correctly or the way we want it
Everything except ICS worked out of the box for me so I ran WinTT to enable internet sharing with the default settings and it worked like a charm. Welcome aboard I just got my Focus S about a week ago as well.

cheers mate, looks like its going to be about a week before I get my hands on it, kind of hoping the HD2 holds out that long!
I see DFT gave the Original Focus some of their magic, Is there any news of it happening here as well?
Id read a review that said the Focus S had a dim screen, is that true, or are they just being picky?
No custom ROM's for the Focus S yet as there is no unlocked bootloader
But you can use WP7 Root Tools for root access (the developer is also close to releasing a version enabling full native access, so custom ROM's wouldn't really be needed after that anyway).
The auto display intensity setting makes the screen maybe a tad darker in a dark room than you'd like it to but I don't find it too bad. You can set the brightness manually or turn the auto-intensity off. When you're in sunlight, the screen is definitely bright enough to easily read. I guess the review you read was written by some idiot who doesn't even know how to change brightness settings lol.

ah auto brightness! there was me thinking it was just a HD2 issue, cool, that's good to know thanks.
as for custom ROMs I agree, the need for changing ROMs is a lot less than it used to be although from time to time some "patches" will only work if cooked in from the start even on a fully unlocked device.
im not too bothered about custom ROMS to be honest, if I was id have brought another HD2, but there are some very handy tools that would be useful but needs full unlock
So are there many folk on this forum then, lots of views on this post but only 1 person replied
I'm not sure.. Haven't posts here much myself.. I stick to the main WP7 areas mostly

So has anyone seen or had any issues with the i937 getting interop unlocked AFTER the zune 8107 update?
ive seen plenty of posts on the omnia 7/W not being interop unlockable after this 8107 update or more specifically the samsung part of it, (cab sending MS 8107 works fine)
and ive seen posts saying that other samsung devices may be effected but ive not found any posts of a Focus S having the problem, is this just because of a much more limited userbase or is it actually cool.
The more i read the more im starting to feel uncomfortable if it has been 8107 updated PRIOR to interop unlock, as far as i can tell, if it is then its essentially locked down solid.
My device came to me (used) with 8107 already on it. I used the WindowBreak method and it was interop unlocked in minutes.

cheers for that, there are still some great developers on here, but you are correct, its moved a lot further to the Green Robot in recent years. Something to remember is that it wasn't that long ago that we didn't have devices other than HTC, which does provide a bit of historical context to why the remaining WP developers mostly target HTC.
ah damn it, they sent me the wrong phone, anyone have any questions they want answered about the Focus Flash?, you've got a few hours before its getting returned.
How is the screen on the Focus Flash compared to Super Amoled Plus on the S?
Finally I have a Focus S in my possession! I don't have the battery yet and my IMEI unlock code hasn't arrived just yet either but with a bit of luck ill be up and running very soon!
Now what? well theres the mine field of upgrades to navigate but more importantly is to start speaking to some developers, esp some of the gods on here to see what, if anything we can do to help our own cause, lets face it folks, due to the AT&T lock in there aren't anywhere near enough people out there for developers to want to spend a lot of time on this so if we want unlocked devices etc we will likely need to chip in together to make it work, what do you guys think?

Has development stopped for custom roms

I have been patiently waiting on Custom Roms on 2nd Gen devices such as our Focus S. Just wanting to know if anyone is still looking into this. Thanks for your help.

im not entirely sure that development even started for the focus s
which is a shame as its a beast of a device, ive asked questions to the gods that be on XDA dev to see if they could even point us In the right direction to playing with this amazing device, unfortunately they have all ignored me.
So I believe as it stands, they don't want to do anything with it as its got a very small user base, and they dnt want to help us so we can do it either.
but still, least its interop unlocked and unlock tools works with it!
This makes me deeply sad inside. It is a sensation like the one you feel when seeing a perfectly good cake being thrown in the garbage.

I am to scared to do the Samsung Update in fear of losing my unlock access. I guess I will be going to the Nokia 920 because I think the user base will be large. This device has been solid for me besides the speaker his when I take a picture.
If the device is fully functional, an you make a backup, applying the Samsung update is fine, but make sure you re apply the relock prevent app, id also strongly suggest you try to restore a backup image as well just to make sure it works!. So make a backup, copy it to a safe location, install some app, then restore your backup, the app you installed should be gone!if that works double check your still interop unlocked, apply Samsung update, DO NOT lose your previous backup an do not apply any OS updates to your phone with out first restoring to your backup! IE remove the Samsung update first!

you can open it up and take a look for your self, to be honest, there is only a couple of noticeable reasons for doing so, the biggie is the keyboard lag issues, there is also an increase in audio volume. looking at the files, it also updates the ROM its self, so hard resets will give you tango rather than Mango
(NOTE_resettng is a really bad idea, if you reset your device, you probably wont be able to restore from a backup and you may end up stuck with it being locked!)
drivers and some apps receive updates.
To be honest, i wouldn't bother, unless the keyboard lag issue is too much for you ( kinda fixable if you turn off keyboard sounds) or the audio is too low an the popping drives you mad, the whole thing feels better but its marginal at best.

[Q] Is this normal? 3rd day with new nexus 6, what do I do?

Hi, I'm new here, but I've been around for awhile, trying to find someone who has been going through the same stuff as me, and I finally have. My dilemma is this. I just got my nexus 2 days ago, upgrading from the n5. After installing 5.1, rebooting and restoring my apps I began to notice some lag. Like touchwiz type lag I had on my old note 2. And for the life of me I can't find any info on wtf is going wrong. It's the little things that I definitely expect a brand new phone to not do. For instance, when I swipe away running apps, they hang and freeze on the side of the screen. Play music routinely freezes when I try to play an album. Whenever I go from chrome to messenger, or close the app drawer, it lags. To the point that I don't even want to let people check my phone out. It is noticeable. I went back to T-Mobile and they said their diagnostic couldn't find anything, and maybe I was just too critical, but I'm not happy with this performance. I'm not rooted, just running apex launcher, animations turned down, no 3rd party apps, and it's not right. My question is, what do I do? I've got a week left on my grace period, does this sound like a faulty phone? Please help. I honestly don't want a different phone, just a "blazing fast, lag free nexus" as so many of you declare you have. I'm probably gonna have to shell out 50 more dollars for a restocking fee, and if I do and find that this is just the performance I can expect from the nexus I'm gonna be screwed. I hope you guys can point me in e right direction, because it seems like for most everyone 5.1 addressed all the encryption lag and stuff. Yet my fresh out the box device is as bad as my n5 was. Thanks in advance.
I also notice the lag when closing running apps and also in Play Music but not when closing the app drawer. My nexus 6 also gets pretty warm.
I think its an issue with android 5.1 and will be fixed in the next update hopefully.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
I can't say I've noticed any lag or freezing, but there again I've been running a custom rom/kernel since day one. I suppose you could scale down animations to help any lag.
My phone only gets hot when turbo charging, as does every turbo charge phone.
Yeah the heat issue is not a big worry for me, but I'm just trying to figure out if my expectations were inflated or if there is something wrong with my device. As it stands now, I could not in good conscience pay 700 bucks for this device. I am a mailman, so I use my phone all day for music, directions, calls etc. And I'm out there moving quickly, I can't spend the time standing around waiting for maps to load, or play music to load up the beast mode playlist And what not. With my n5, OK Google and wired skullcandys I had full command until lollipop screwed it up. When you guys say you see No lag, do you seriously mean when you swipe away apps they just fly off the screen full speed and liquid smooth? I wish

Thanks in advance.

try factory resetting from the stock recovery.
I have had my Nexus 6 from Verizon for a month. I am stock with Nova launcher. No lag anywhere at all... I use play music all day at work and I swipe the apps to close the programs a few times a day. Never have I seen them stick to the side for a moment. I have have my phone seem to lockup a few times but a reset always makes everything okay again.

Kill the 3rd party launcher, that can definitely be a source of problems like you are describing.
Second, root, kill the encryption, format data partition (to actually remove the crypto), restart. The encryption in 5.1 is *STILL* swcrypto, and will definitely cause slowdowns, increases memory consumption, and is just downright miserable.
you got to try things out. different software is not all the same.
Do any of your apps have accessbility access? I have been experiencing similar symptoms to yours, there's a video showing what it does to animations in the thread I made asking if anyone else experiences this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/help/ui-stuttering-caused-accessibility-t3088343
Try turning off all accessibility access permissions and see if it goes away.

Man I wish it was as simple as you make it seem. To me that sounded like if I said I want an 11 second car, and you're like, well just swap in an rb, port and polish, bigger turbo's, etc. Haha its not that easy I think. I've always wanted to try root, but I was afraid to brick it up. If I've decided to pay the restocking fee anyway to get a new nexus, would it be unwise to try rooting now?
So I'm still having this problem, and unfortunately I have been unable to find any explanation for why this micro stutter exists. I think I have to return this phone but tomorrow might or forever hold my peace. I'D really appreciate any insight available as to why a brand new flagship caliber nexus would have micro stutter that I can't fix.
Thanks guys
.just bummed cause there is no other worthy phone at the right size besides the nexus. But I can't pay for a glitchy device.
Sad but hopefully an update will fix it soon

If you havent traded it in yet... did you try the factory reset? Definitely remove apex, try the phone with stock launcher, then with nova. If that doesnt work for you, I would root (make sure you study and learn) and install a custom ROM. I'm currently running AISP, its the best ROM Ive ran so far on my nexus 6 Good Luck bud.
As soon as I got mine, I turned off encryption and minimized animations and had no problems. Now I'm running a custom rom, and still no problems. Fast as #&%@.
encryption is not the issue

I wanted to thank all you guys that posted, I appreciate it. So I went ahead and restarted in safe mode and realized the problem lay with one of my apps, or running alot of zooper widgets and not factoring that into account when judging the speed of animations. Anyhow, I havent identified a particular app that was causing the problem, but it has gotten better now that Ive cooled it with zooper. Still love this phone, glad I didnt trade it in for a smaller s6 or old g3, next step, learning what im supposed to do once Ive rooted this phone.

Root or Not Root that's the question

Hi together,
I am wondering which benefits I can expect from rooting my device.
One thing that comes to my mind is having an option to use face unlock for older unlock APIs.
What do you guys think?
Tirade incoming...
I'm probably in the minority, but I won't buy a phone I cannot root. The idea that the phone that I paid $1000 for up front is under the control of other companies seems wrong to me. I have full control over my computers... my ISP doesn't tell me what I can run on it and can't force me to use their DNS; Microsoft doesn't tell me that I'm breaking a EULA by running admin programs; my bank's website doesn't refuse to load because I'm running a lot of browser extensions that can modify the page. Google says they respect that people want control over their phones but they also say they respect app creator's wanting to run on an unmodified device. I throw those companies to the wind and don't look back. If only Google would stop blocking access to things and requiring us to use root to gain them back. They give and take features almost constantly and it often feels like a losing battle.
Ideology aside, there are so many small things that can be done through rooting. The next best alternative is either awkward or non-existent. I could name them off, but each thing on their own is easily dismissable is about preference. But if I had to use a phone that had none of my modifications/tweaks, I would be fairly unhappy. I don't think you'll understand the difference until you're actually changing your phone significantly as a whole then have to consider going back. A lot of things you won't know you even wanted until you find that they're possible... and a lot of things you'll look at and not even care about, despite them being popular to other people. That's what rooting is to me. Choices and options... in a world where Apple and even Google think that less is more.
I think if you're willing to experiment and put a significant amount of time in doing so, you should dive in and find out what you like. But if you're on the ropes about it, then you might not get into it.

To make that clear. I rooted every android phone I owned up to now. There has been always a thing that bothered me about the stock ROM.
But this time I feel like everything is working out of the box. (Except face unlock for ing, which sux)
I get your point and you are totally right. But I'm not sure if I want to change so much and having to update on my own and other things is to much work for me.

I hear you. Rooting used to be fun and easy but it's more work than I want to deal with at this point.

It takes me longer the download the stock image to do updates with than it takes me to re-root the phone after the update. I wonder why it seems like a lot of work to you.
PS. My broadband ISP is slow....

It takes more time, which you actively have to spend. It's not like ow there is an update. Ok install done.
You have to go through all steps. You have to e.g. change settings in build.prop again. Flash kernel or what ever.
One example with rooted and problems with apps I'm always unsure if it's due to root or due to the rom. Stuff like this.
I don't have to do either of those things. My build.prop changes are systemlessly handled by a Magisk module that just works as soon as I'm rooted again. YMMV.
I've spent more time writing in this thread than my monthly process takes. If you don't have that time, then fine. You've answered your own question?
I've rooted all my devices except the pixel ones. There's absolutely no need for me to root a pixel device, everything is working as I want out of the box. That's one reason that development for the pixel 4/xl is nearly non existent.
ROOT! #1 reason Fingerface for fingerprint only APIs, other than that I agree the Pixel phones don't need any modifications. I hope the Pixel 5 will bring back the FP, face unlock sucks with a mask!

first reason finger face

Why choose android if you are going to use a limited system?
If i could live without root i would just go iPhone way

Because many people like what Android has to offer over iOS, simple. Rooting isn't as useful as what it used to be
Does google pay work currently root? Magisk hide?
Or is that out of the question now...

From what I've been reading it's going to be hard to get Google Pay to work with root. I only use root to bring back the 2 button gesture using a Magisk module. I don't know if it's worth it anymore.

I want to root so I can run ProtonVPN (or any VPN really) alongside Adguard. You can't run them side x side without root....
Admittedly a little sick of the whole big brother thing, so wouldn't mind obscuring my traffic a bit.
