3g

I'm wondering if there is a way to set the phone to only use 3g and not hit edge. ATT has ran fiber to the towers where i live and the signals have jumped up about 30%. but for some reason since Edge hits 4-5 bars it jumpbs back and forth. 3g i can get 2-3 bars which is still faster than the 5 bars of edge. is there any way to set it to only use 3g?

In general your phone will ALWAYS try to grab 3G if the signal is stable enough to support the connection.
However, I know some people use this method to lock their phone to 2G until they manually tell it to switch to 3G, though I'm not sure if it will work in reverse since the phone will generally downgrade to next best as soon as it loses stable 3G, this might not BIND it to 3G, but I suppose it's worth a shot:
Use your phone dialer and dial in *#*#197328640#*#* Click [1] Debug Screen then [8] Phone Control then [4] UE State Control and choose [2] Change RAT to WCDMA. You might have to give it a minute or two to negotiate the connection.
This option isn't super practical though, you'll have to reenter it everytime you reboot, and if it works the way you want it to work you'll be stuck doing the same procedure to change it to GSM if your network drops below 3G quality. My suggestion is to leave it alone and hope that AT&T upgrades your 3G coverage to acceptable levels =/

This happened to me a few months ago. The phone is definitely capable and you will get LTE signals on the $60/month GoPhone plan.
1. First of all, call GoPhone customer support (611 from the phone) and confirm that they have your HTC One whitelisted for LTE. They're going to double check with you your phone's IMEI number (they can already see it, but will ask you for it anyway), and then confirmed that the phone is allowed to get LTE signals. They're also going to double check your APN setting and provide you with the appropriate entries for AT&T.
2. Reboot and see if you now get LTE signals. If you still don't get it, check whether your mobile network settings is set to GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto instead of GSM/WCDMA Auto or WCDMA Preferred (or maybe something else). If you don't see any LTE option, dial *#*#4636#*#* from your dialer, and in the first drop down box choose 'GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto' or anything with LTE just to make sure you can catch LTE signals at all. If you were able to find and switch to the setting you want, exit out, and go back to that menu, double checking if the setting sticks. If it does, reboot and try again.
3. Most people will get LTE signals after #1 above, while some were only able to get it after #2. However if you are unlucky like me, the LTE setting does not show up in mobile network and no matter what I do in the hidden menu, the setting won't stick (it's stuck on GSM/WCDMA Auto). I actually tried flashing a different radio at this point (a newer AT&T radio), but still... no LTE for me. What solved this finally for me is that I flashed a custom ROM (in my case it was ARHD 12.2). This enabled me to choose GSM/WCDMA/LTE Auto under mobile network settings, and after that I was able to get LTE. It was great! :good:

3g not working if radios set to 3g only?

I noticed if I go to the mobile networking settings and have it it on lte/3g if I leave a 4g area, 3g works ok. If I put the toggle specifically on 3g it shows I have 3g, but anytime I tried to search google or access a data connection the signal goes away and gives me the signal with an exclamation point. I tried finding info on this, but didn't see anything when I searched. Anyone else have this issue? I am on Sprint with the 64gb white device. Thanks

I leave mine on 3g due to the lame multiple text issue. It has no problem staying on 3g. Perhaps try updating your PRL/profile and see if that helps.

I don't have 3g either if I set it to 3g only. I don't leave lte service too often to test whether 3g works when it switches on its own. I may have to make a trip to the mountains to test it. I do know that my old Note 2 would loose lte after flashing tons over and over and I would have to flash back to 100% stock the factory reset from the settings app to fix it. I may try this with my Nexus, about time for a wipe anyway.

Factory reset does not fix it. Just noticed that I don't even get 3g when it is set on LTE. I'm gonna go talk to my cellular provider about it.

I don't know why it wouldn't work. You did update profile and PRL also right? Here's some shots of mine and it's working fine.

I have a bad Sim.....I also don't have a phone number as well..... I swiped with an old card I had and my number appeared, I guess I'll be visiting the store tomorrow to get a new one. Maybe it'll fix my 3g. Its also not wanting to let me pick 3g as an option now, just stays on LTE.

KB112 - Are you on sprint also? I updated prl/profile and no luck still. 3g still works if I am on lte and go into a 3g zone, but if I toggle it to 3g only I get no data. Wondering if its a sprint thing or a lollipop bug on Sprint, or a bad sim, missing feature activation.

Sorry, didn't see this earlier. But yes, I am on Sprint. My 3G would work fine if I set to 3G only. Not sure why yours has issues with this?

Oddly I tried it today and it started working. I think it could have been some kind of issue with the tower/upgrades or a bug that a reset may fix on occasion perhaps.

Verizon range extender problems

Anybody else on Verizon using a Verizon brand extender? A search found one other old thread but no definitive fix. The one proposed fix was to set the phone to 1x speed to force it out of hunting for towers outside and hope that 5.1 fixed the problem. I just got my phone from Verizon, it came out of the box with 5.1, so it would seem they didn't fix it. And I can't seem to find how to set it to 1x. Only from global to LTE. I'm dropping calls, having problems with texts, and Verizon support admitted it doesn't seem that my calls are going through the extender. They said the 6 should be perfectly capable of utilizing this extender. My note 3 worked perfect on it, and as far as I know the wife's note 4 does as well. I get the beep like it's calling through it, just not the signal. And this phone doesn't have a separate icon to show if it's connected, intermittent, or never recognizing it. Is this a known issue and I just didn't search properly? Running 5.1 LMY47E, bone stock. I warrantied the phone, same thing. So this thing is literally about an hour out of the box, no mods. Looking forward to rooting and running some roms but I'd like to know I've got any issues ironed out before hand. That way I'll know any future issues are rom related, not hardware

Unfortunately there is no fix unless Verizon decides to somehow upgrade the software/firmware of the extender. I'm surprised that Verizon tech support didn't inform you that the extender is not capable of utilizing 4G or enhanced network capability and can only function with 3G or less. I spent a bit of time on the phone with tech support and requested a problem ticket be raised to Verizon engineers to get a definitive answer -their response was that the extender can not do 4G but only 3G. The way I was able to get my Nexus 6 to successfully connect was to turn the "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" off and then it was able to connect. This is not a nexus 6 issue only but from what I've seen is any phone that has that enhanced 4G setting - my wife's Iphone 6 is also unable to use the extender unless that phone capability to use 4G/LTE is turned off. Surprised you even got the beep as never of our phones get that connection beep unless the 4G/Enhanced switch is off.
I'm surprised (maybe not) that Verizon continues to sell the same Network Extender even though it no longer works with the new network capability or with phones that use that technology. Also brought that up with them during my call but of course that wasn't addressed. I also got no information as to any plans to upgrade the extender firmware but I'm assuming the lack of info speaks loudly.

Also, my Nexus 6 is rooted and I have tried numerous ROMs and the ROM makes no difference so that isn't going to fix the issue.

This helps a ton, thanks! I've always known that the extender didn't support anything above 3g, but it's never been an issue since my router took care of data and 3g was plenty for calls and texts. But I was thinking it had something to do with this... I haven't researched any of this new stuff about xlte or whatever it is but I know it seems the phones are changing to support some mods to the network. I haven't paid attention because my town is usually the last to receive this sort of technology. Big cities were going to 4g soon after we upgraded to 3g...
Can you tell me if the pic below is the menu that you used? I can't find any setting anywhere else that specifically says 3g, to try to force it into a mode that the extender understand.

The setting that needs to be disabled is on the same screen where you set the preferred network type (actually under the one you are displaying). It should be the next setting following the Preferred network type. It actually has a slider to turn on or off. Now, I'm not running stock but I believe it should be the same or very similar on stock.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that detail. The Verizon tech had me do this. It actually told me I was connecting through the extender. And the call seemed relatively clear. But I could hang up and immediately dial my voicemail or some other number, get the beep from connecting through the extender, but the call would be spotty and cutting out badly. And the tech was confused by this because it wasn't showing on his system that I was connecting through the extender even when the #48 said I was. Strange things going on with this...

I'm not typing on my phone either, to include a screenshot. But I'm looking at it. The option directly under Preferred network type (which I have changed back to the default Global), is System Select. The subtext under that says "Change the CDMA roaming mode". And within the menu, the two options are "Home only" and "Automatic", of which Automatic is the default. Is this what I'm looking for?

Do you have Advanced Calling activated on you phone? Not sure if that is the issue or not but on your Verizon Wireless account you should see Advanced Calling (I believe that is what it is called) under "Manage Products. & Aps" - you should have the option to add it to your account. It is a free service but as I understand it you need to include it on your account for the phone to use Volte and it might not show up in settings if it is not an active service on the phone. Again, I'm only guessing here since I'm not on stock but I do believe I've had the option since I got the phone and I added HD calling right after I completed the pre-order.

I will log on in a bit and look. So are you suggesting that I enable it, or disable it? Is it believed that HAVING this feature is what is killing the link to the extender? Sorry for the dumb questions. Like I said, I've never had to look into the new tower technology before because I don't anticipate getting it in my area. I never thought about it still affecting my service anyway, even though we weren't getting it... figures.

For me to use my extender the 4G enhanced/LTE needs to be disabled. What I don't know is whether that setting shows up on the phone if the Advanced Calling isn't active on the account. If it doesn't show up there might be no way to disable it. I know it sounds somewhat illogical but again
I'm guessing to some extent given that I have it on mine and I really think it has been there from the start.

Using 2G data on z3c

I'm still using stock 5.1.1 ROM, because I'm not clear whether I lose some functionality by rooting / unlocking the bootloader.
I like to use my phone in 2G data mode, that feels safer on my body than 3G and above - but this device considers 2G only mode to be calls and text only (i.e. data off!).... this seems crazy to me since data off is achieved more easily with the option just for that. Is there any way to have proper 2G data only mode?
So when I go into the data options I get the usual set of things, and 2G says "2G (voice and calls only)", then when I switch to this, data is actually turned off. When try to turn data on, I get a message saying I've got to switch data mode to be able to do this - data stays off until I choose "3G (preferred) / 2G". It seems like the software on my device is designed to turn data off when you choose 2G - very odd.
No updates are available when I check. I'd love to go to marshmallow, but I guess I've missed that until Sony release their tested version of it - that update might fix this issue.

For me this used to work on kitkat (i can't remember on lollipop because i use concept 6.0.1):
in quick settings i'd turn off LTE and then in settings - mobile networks i'd set to 2G only. And afterwards by switching LTE on and off form quick settings phone would toggle from 2G and LTE. But since i didn't pay for 4G to my provider, my phone would toggle from 2G to 3G - just what i wanted.
I used to use 2G on my old Xperia P since it improved my battery life dramatically. I continued to use it on my Z3c while on kitkat, but it didn't affect my battery life so i stopped - hence I don't know if you can do this trick on lollipop.

I don't really understand you... I'm using 5.1.1 and if I switch to GSM only, ALL network stuff is using 2G - calls, texts, mobile data (little E letter right next to the signal icon). So... what's really a problem? Maybe I don't understand the context (I am not a fluent english speaker but I understand it pretty well) but please describe your problem more precisely
P.S.:
Rooting doesn't harm your device, your camera resolution won't change at all so don't worry
[Unlocking bootloader DOES harm your device (losing some DRM-related stuff) but there are plenty of other benefits from this AND you can revert the DRM changes.]

That's ridiculous. The power levels used in 2G and 3G and 4G are all roughly the same and always below 250mW.

like I said, we each choose - and choose how much we look into it. Probably similar comments from people in the 60s to anyone questioning Aspestos. It's easy for either of us to generalise that it's OK or not, with examples from the past, but there's information out there that's looked into this and is thorough, including significant instances of phone engineers with brain tumors. We don't agree, let’s at least be respectful.

1) When 2G is working on 1800 MHz band (this happens especially if you live in a big city), the energy is more or less the same used by 3G technology.
Anyway this is not the point.
2) Are you sure your network operator has 2G data connection available? Is your firmware branded?
You don't lose DRM keys while you flash an unbranded firmware or you root the device with giefroot method.

thanks for your reply - yes definitely there's a 2G connection, as I live in the countryside I end up on this quite a bit of the time, when in "3G/2G" mode.
I'm on a UK network called Tesco that uses the O2 network. Phone originally came from O2 (telefonica), but is now SIM unlocked. Behaviour was the same before and after unlock - no surprise as software the same. Build number is 23.4.A.1.264, kernel 3.4.0-perf-gbe52486 (September 17 2015)

Threads like the one you linked and statements like above just reek of not understanding how GSM and 2G/3G/4G actually works.

As 2G and 3G have different requirements, they also have different power consumption. It doesn't require much more than common logic to understand that since 3G needs to transfer more data during a short period of time, it would use more resources than 2G, which needs less during the same period.
