I have seen other methods out there, but all of them require me to use safestrap which doesn't work for lollipop. I know towelroot does not work and I don't know what else to try. What works? When will dev be able to get easy methods like towelroot working again?

+1 same boat
There is presently no root method for lollipop on the G900A if you took the OTA update.

Has anyone tried any tether methods (particularly for VZW) on 4.4 rooted with jcase's latest method?
This works just fine...

This works great for me on VZW 4.4 non-DE, root with jcase method. And, it simply requires downloading and installing an app. No ADB.
I'm looking to probably upgrade from my GS3 to the GS5. I've read some of the posts on here about rooting, but I'm still a bit confused. It seems that root is only available for 4.4.2, but then you can't keep root and upgrade to 5.0.1. Is that correct?
Also, could anyone point me to a thread that lays out the root method for the phone? I see a lot of people talking ABOUT the thread existing, but no actual links to the thread.
Thanks in advance!

Theres another method to root 4.4.2 u gotta downgrade to a different kernel then use towelroot and then flas the upgraded kernel. Theres a method on here by the same guy that did 5.0 one , just search his name you can find it

Note that OTA 5.0 just got pushed by AT&T and if you take it, there is currently no way to root or downgrade to 4.4.2 to use towelroot. In fact if you try to downgrade after the 5.0 OTA, you will end up bricking the phone. I'm sure devs around are working on finding a way to root the OTA, but as of today there isn't a way. There is an alternate method using FireFlash which is in beta to install 5.0 on a rooted 4.4.4. Note that if you are just about to buy a S5, it might be preloaded with 5.0 which until probably some time in the future is not rootable.
I would suggest delaying your upgrade from S3 to S5 until someone figures out how to root 5.0 OTA.

Gotcha. I'm not gonna not upgrade simply because root may not be possible yet if it's already 5.0, but that's good to know. Thanks.
I've been looking around for a way to root my S5, but it appears you can't do that if you got 5.0 OTA. Is there any way I can work around this?

No root exploit for ATT 5.0 OTA. No way to downgrade either. Hopefully our hard working devs will find an exploit soon.
AT&T pushed OF3 to my phone without my consent. I hadn't rooted it yet. Is there any way to root the device or should I put it up on eBay?
Nothing yet I'm afraid. And as far as I know, it's not possible to ODIN back to the previous version once on OF3
Yeah I can confirm downgrade is not possible. Although I think downgrading Kernels and then using Pingpong will gain root. Not 100% sure
this happened to me too

Hello i just bought an at&t galaxy s5 on ebay with firmware 5.1.1 G900AUCU4C015. From what I've read so far there is no root possible for this version. Maybe downgrade to older version to root, if so than links? Thanks
No not possible.
I also have an AT&T S5 G900A with Android version 5.0 Baseband: G900AUCU3BOC4, Build: G900AUCU4BOF3. Can I safely assume this can't be rooted either?

I tried rooting with Kingroot once, and it gave me the option to root.

I tried that and it didn't work. Towelroot doesn't work either. Next to texting my phone is used primarily for listening music in my car which is made even more pleasant by using Viper4Android. If this phone is not rootable I'll dump it for a compatible model. Can anyone confirm?

Unfortunately "try to root" does not guarantee root as I found out.
Lollipop is not rootable.
