So here's the backstory, about a year ago I bought a fairly new Samsung S5 (SM-G900A) off of swappa.com. It's always been on Straight Talk, so I have never been able to receive AT&T updates. My problem with getting it to Android 5.0 is that my phone needs to be at 4.4.4. I can't find any firmware out there to upgrade from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 since AT&T hasn't published their firmware. Any assistance/help/tutorials in finding a way to get my phone up to 4.4.4 would be much appreciated.

Are you rooted? Do you want root? 4.4.4 was not much difference from 4.4.2.

It's not rooted and I don't need root access. If root is an absolute must than I wouldn't have a problem rooting my device. I wanted 4.4.4 so I can upgrade to the stock AT&T 5.0 ROM.

Read and follow the instructions in post 1. READ THE NOTES SECTION at the bottom of post 1. You'll need to root with towel root first then you'll be able to flash up to 5.0. I don't know if any way for you to do it regular as i have never had straight talk.
I have an At&t Galaxy model G900A and downloaded towelroot and installed but when tried to root I get message saying "This phone currently not supported" Please any know what I need to do to get my phone rooted?
A 5s? Do you mean a S5?

Right now you cant Root the S5 in Lollipop. You need to downgrade to Android 4.4 Kitkat to be able to Root and after that, upgrade to 5.11 lollipop.
If you have 5.0 you can't root or downgrade. Also there is no root available above 5.0.
I am having trouble rooting my S5 (SM-G900A) . I tried using the Towelroot method with the different codes, it always said that the phone is currently not supported. Since I really don't know that much about rooting, it would reaally be helpful for me to have an easy-to-understand explanaition on how to get this thing rooted.
Root S5 At&T
Hi, I have the same problem, I have an S5 from ATT with lollipop 5.0, I tried to root it and now is showing me a notification that says that I have to take the phone to an ATT center to undo whatever was done, but no root, if you had any help with this topic please letme know, thank you
If you have lollipop installed, there is no root method and no way to downgrade. Boot loader is locked down like fort Knox as well. Not many devs use this 2 year old phone anymore.
super duper easy root

You can't flash back. If you have taken the 5.0 or later update, THERE IS NO POSSIBLE WAY TO ROOT OR DOWNGRADE CURRENTLY.

ah he didnt specify that he took an OTA update to 5.0. thanks for the clarification
I have Android 4.4.2 installed, but Towelroot still does not work. I bought the phone back in the USA, then unlocked it and took it to Germany two years ago. For this reason I can't get any newer Android versions.....

Same problem here. Got a code-unlocked AT&T S5 on T-mobile SIM running 4.4.2. Kernel is from July, so Towel root doesn't work.
AP: G900AUCU2ANG3
CP: G900AUCU2ANG3
CSC: G900AATT2ANG3
I want to do the following:
1- Root the phone without loosing the unlock
2- Update to Android 5
3- Replace the OS by unbranded android, ideally also get rid of the samsung bloatware as well.
Is it possible? I Spend 8 hours already looking for answers, but none f them apply to my specs.
Many thanks

Unlocked is unlocked. You can't lose that by flashing.

Actually Giefroot works on any device below 5.0 . Proof: https://cve.mitre.org/cgi-bin/cvename.cgi?name=CVE-2014-7911 ( this is one of the exploits that Giefroot uses.)
Upgrade to Lollipop
I have the exact same problem. I want to root and update my AT&T Galaxy S5. I am using this phone on Tmobile network so my build is G900AUCU2ANG3. I found this XDA link. I am such a newbie I do not even understand step 1 about NG3 update over OTA.

Could someone please help me how I should follow this link or update my phone to Lollipop.

You can't do the OTA update anymore because its not available anymore. But you could download the OTA update file and sideload it.

Thank you very much for your reply. Good to know someone knows about this stuff. Just couple more questions if you could help.
1. Will the link mentioned by me in previous post work to root my phone with build G900AUCU2ANG3 and kernel date of July? http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-galaxy-s5/general/g900and3tong3keeprootota-zip-t2862299
2. How could I download the OTA update file to sideload it. Is there a link to download?
Thanks again for your help.

1. Yes, you don't need the OTA because you are already on NG3 so just start from step 2.
It works! Thanks so much. Now I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy S5 on running Android 4.4.2. Baseband G900AUCU2ANG3. Phone was originally from AT&T, unlocked and rooted, currently being used on T-Mobile.
1- How do I upgrade to a current Android version?
2- How can I remove all AT&T bloatware and have an unbranded phone?
Thanks.
I have an AT&T Galaxy S6 using a Cricket sim card. It is running 5.0.2, and unable to update through Smart Switch, OTA, or Best Buy. I want to root it and then flash it to 6.0.1. The baseband version number is G920AUCU1AOC9. Can anyone help me?

you will lose root. There is no known root for 6.0. There is a hack for 5.1.1 but I never tried it.
Hey guys,
I have to root a G890A for a friend to remove all the at&t crap and samsung/google bloatware but Im not sure whether or not I should upgrade to 5.1.1 first or not?
Which Version does run better overall?
The phone is sim-unlocked as far as I can tell, would rooting and/or flashing 5.1.1 affect that unlock?

Best version for me is is 6.0.1 because of the great battery life and the Marshmallow Android. However 5.0.2 had the same battery life unlike 5.1.1 where it was terrible.
The rooting/flashing will affect the unlock. As to the root for 5.0.2 - you can read how to do it here (the second page has the downloadable files):

Yes, 5.1.1. and 6.0.1 are not rootable at the moment. Only 5.0.2. The link I gave you states that 5.1.1 can be rooted too but it's actually some kind of service mode which is no good and as soon as you flash back the stock 5.1.1 there's no more root.

So I rooted that thing now... throught that the recovery was actually a custom recovery but it just seems to be stock recovery with root permission.
Is there TWRP or CWM recovery out for the G890A somewhere? Would love to take a backup before I start the debloating.
