At this time you can only use Mofo, the utility that you found on google. You can find a video guide thanks to @Tomsgt here -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXAYjbf76II&feature=youtu.be.

That would be correct. After you verify your device you will be prompted to pay $20 via PayPal. At that point you will gain access to the Mofo.exe tool to flash the rooted system image.

I think charging for root is going to start becoming more common man. The first time I paid for a service was on my M8 to get BL unlock. It's easy for those of us who use root and such to expect it to be free because it historically has been but if you think about the time, bricked devices and all the crap devs have to deal with then it is totally worth it to compensate them. Previously sharing their work free of charge was a gift to us all, not a right.

Because these huge bounty threads get made for thousands of dollars and few ever pay.
20 dollars is chump change, and if its not, then that person has no business living on welfare while sporting an expensive smartphone.
You are paying for their work, not your appreciation.
Development like this is not a non-profit charity that runs off of donations. It was a lot of hard work and without it, root wouldn't even be here. So, pay for their time and effort, or don't.
Such is the price of specialized skills. You either learn how to do it and do it yourself, or you pay someone else to. A lot like changing the oil in your car.
Totally agree that we should not expect a free root exploit. This is the first time that I have had to pay but happily paid the $20. Well worth it for software that was proven to work just for a specific device. The choice is yours to wait for someone to provide a free service, however this may not happen for a long time if ever. Would also pay (depending on cost) to have an unlocked bootloader if that ever become available.

and hey just do the 30 day trial to start and see for yourself.
There is a way to keep using the 30 day trial, I forget how but there is a way to reset it after the 30 days, someone posted on here a while ago if you really can't afford the $30.
Give it a search.
Doesn't anyone find it odd that we are paying out huge sums of cash for a Linux based OS that is free to use?
Because the cost of the handset doesn't factor into it at all :face palms:
I mean they handed us a broken toy and we fixed it for them with no pay and they sold it back to us as an update, now we are fixing it up more. Hopefully when Android 114.6 rolls out some devs. will for a union of some kind and make some cash from big business instead of settling for the 2.99 that their brothers and sisters are downloading.

But who is it that decides the devs have been screwed. Is it you? I think that honor goes to each individual who bought the phone. You don't get to determine that someone else has been screwed just because your panties are in a bunch over something related to your phone.
The cost of a non open source operating system on a phone is going to be so heavily subsidized, I'd be surprised if the additional cost was more than a couple of dollars/pounds/whatever. Bottom line is that you're just paying for the device whichever route you take.
Also consider how long android has been out, it is definitely the quickest maturing mobile platform around. Anyone remember the state wm was in at this age?
Edit: I think the developers would rather be "screwed" as you put it in order to bring about progress in a timely manner. That's what open source is all about!

First off, that's a toaster I want.
Second off, you're absolutely right. It's not about the money, it's about taking your phone to the next level and being able to say you were the one who got it there first. I and thousands of others have nothing but respect for these developers and a lot of us give them both props and donations for their work. I'm sure the donations are nice, but I doubt there are many devs on XDA who started writing ROMs and compiling kernels because they thought it would make them rich.
Don't understate the motivational power of random people coming into your thread to say "Your work is awesome, keep it up, and how cool would it be if it did this too?" For some people the respect is all they need, since genuine respect can't be bought, it can only be earned.

I don't really think a show of wallets is what is going to gain root for us , but rather a more targeted effort to get devices into the right folks hands is perhaps more likely to succeed IMO.
Maybe, but I rather think even the most gifted developers can't do anything if there is nothing exploitable. Motorola and Google appearently did do a quite good job. My main hope now is an update or a SBF, which could lead to new ideas ...

I agree. Unless I misunderstood, this is basically a theoretical root 'purse' to whoever roots? This may increase some devs interest in putting their time into it, but IMO moeny is better spent helping the right people get the right tools.
I just have a problem giving someone a device who already has one to work with....when there are developers who don't have a D3 at all.
Personally if I had the knowledge to root a device I would just charge $20 each for the root app/program/directions and then truly get paid for my work. 50 root purchases could make a quick $1000 and assuming this device sells anything like the DX then 800+ could bring in a cool $16,000(there are at least 800 DX's currently using CM7 nightlies).
so give the device to someone who DOESN'T have it?!
I say give it to krazy. He obviously has the will and knowledge.

I have been working with several others, and all of our skills lie in different places, but they all are important. I do currently have a phone, and am not desperately in need of another. It woudl be nice to get a device in the hands of some of the others I have been working with- for example.

A developer working on his own phone isn't going to take any "major" chances since they have to use it as their......well....phone. There is no .sbf file to recover it if bricked, so it's either buying a new one at full retail or seeing if a warranty replacement is possible (though technically it shouldn't be since the user broke the device).
I'd feel more comfortable giving a developer who already has a Droid 3 one to "dev" on, as they are more interested in obtaining root for the device themselves since they want root on their own device (the one they use for calls, txts, etc..).
I have to agree here, the prospect of some cash for doing it is always nice, but we could in theory get it faster if the right people could have the device, but it is all a lot easier said then done..

I see this all the time and it really really bothers me. People that have done nothing other than read some forum posts that are readily available to anyone with an Internet connection are making money off of others hard work.
I just posted this to my local craigslist.
"Don't get scammed, all of the jailbreaking and rooting methods are available for FREE online.
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=Android+Root
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=iPhone+Jailbreak
The odds that someone willing to root or jailbreak your phone for cash and being the person that created the method are approximately 0.
I say this because the developers of these methods do it as a hobby and share with their community.
So please, before you spend money on something you can do easily and for free, do a quick Google search.
tags: iphone android HTC apple samsung LG Galaxy EVO Epic Touch root jailbreak repair t-mobile verizon sprint att at&t 4g 3g tablet iPad Xoom"
I'm working on getting a laptop so that I can host "Free ROOTing events" at local coffee shops.
If you're with me I implore you to do the same. If there's a good reason why I shouldn't have done this, please let me know what I'm missing.
The people doing this aren't selling drugs or snatching purses. Is there really something wrong with perusing a legal source of income?
Also, the more people out there with rooted devices the better.

Do you also have a problem with car wahing services? I mean you can do it yourself for free but some people still pay to have it done. Or what about home renovations? Why pay when you can Do it yourself? If a person can google for Unlock/root phone and find the person charging for it surely they must have passed over hundreds of DIY instructions in the process.

Thats the beauty of capitalism, if someone's willing to pay for a service, someone is willing to work and get paid to do that service.
Jordan is right, its the same as washing a car or installing windows. Plus we don't need more noob threads about how they botched the rooting process and bashing the devs because they didn't read the directions. Better to have someone who knows what their doing and get the job done right.

It's not a scam.... It's a service....
Scam = people paying money to jailbreak a phone for you that doesn't actually jailbreak the phone....
Service = people don't know how or are afraid to jailbreak their phone in fear of bricking their device, or that don't have the expertise to do it themselves.

As you can see from this post Obsidian... said he will talk to hash about accepting a S4 Active to get his safe strap working. This will allow us to flash roms and multiboot different roms from our active(for more information on how this will work please go to this forum). He is currently working for this for the VZ S4 and seems to be making progress. If he is successful he will consider accepting an active to do the same. It would be cool to get him a Active so he can bug test and help us out. This will really boost the development for our device.... I write this to ask if you guys are willing to join with the community to raise money for his Active. We already have $675 towards a unlocked bootloader, this will give us most if not all the same features and will probably only cost us $400-$500. I hate to do this but below I will @ all the pledge members for the bootloader because some of them said they don't normally check the forums:
Pledges:
texassax $10
JEZZEJAMEZ $20
my-blue-snog-box $10
paleh0rse $10
skeppley $20
daugh016 $10
mnasledov $80
huggstown $100
Total = $260
Goal = $530
(this goal is based off of resent eBay auctions, if the phone costs less than the amount raised then the highest pledge amount will be reduced. Example if the highest pledge is $100 USD and we were $20 over... we would only ask for $80)
If someone wants to donate his phone to hash we can give you the pledge if needed
I'm tight on money myself, but count me in for $10 anyway.
@joshuadjohnson22, are you asking for a consensus as to whether people are willing to say "yeah, this fulfills the terms better than anything else we have come across; let's use the money we pledged for this"? Or are you starting another bounty independent of the bootloader?

This is separate and will probably be the best we will ever get. The bootloader may never be unlocked, this will be a pre-release here's a device now work your magic type of commitment. The bootloader unlock will be nice but with this it will probably not be needed. If you want to remove one pledge for the other I understand fully.
Keep in mind he has not agreed to anything yet. We could get all the money together and he says no or just requests one of us to send him our device... or work with one of our users (the devices should be that different...), this is just to see if we have the money pledge to get him the active if he agrees

I think you're looking into this a little too early..
He was saying something about breaking into the device by using some of the scripts that are needed to be run for the qualcomm chipset to work early in the boot sequence. We have essentially the same ones as the S4. The only thing that would most likely need to be changed is the actual recovery that is booted because we have different LCD drivers.
If you want to buy him an Active just as a sort of "thanks" then by all means go for it but I don't think he will need one in order to complete the mod.. It may well be up to his goodwill to compile us a working version for our device if he doesn't open-source the project which is kind of doubtful here at XDA.
Once again though, I'm not a developer and just another resident idiot so take everything I say with a grain of salt.
Edit: the "resident idiot" thing isn't directed at anybody or meant to be offensive just a little joke

Good point. It appears his team made some base roms for users that work well with the mod, it would be cool if he had some active specific support for us. Either way he may figure out that he could make a simple port for us but it would still be nice to know we have the support to provide a device if it is needed. So if it comes to that we can ship it out right away... but he is smart enough to decide if that will be needed. Either way this is exciting and I hope it works out

Just keep me posted, my donation is good for either solution... or both (I'll pay twice if someone goes on to unlock the actual bootloader, as well).
I've got no real intention of buying an Active at this point - I'm considering a GE S4 with an Obex, but a new phone has been moved to the back burner for now: the possibility of buying a house is priority no. 1 at the moment. I'm leaving my pledge for the bootloader, because I believe in the concept - unlocked bootloaders help us all by driving the dev community - but a workaround really isn't the same to me.
I hope that doesn't come off as sophistry, but either way, I'm not in for this one.

I write this to ask if you guys are willing to join with me to raise money for his Active. We already have $675 towards a unlocked bootloader, this will give us most if not all the same features and will probably only cost us $400-$500. I hate to do this but below I will @ all the pledge members for the bootloader because some of them said they don't normally check the forums:
Pledges:
joshuadjohnson22 $10
texassax $10
JEZZEJAMEZ $20
my-blue-snog-box $10
paleh0rse $10
skeppley $20
Total = $80
Goal = $530

How does a donation work? If I donate my device, do I eventually get it back? Or is it truly a donation?

Depends on what Hash wants to do. The donation I was referring to in the post was to give him your phone and collect the bounty (Like selling you phone). But he may just want to borrow one of our devices or work with one of us *cough moose*

Well a few things with this comment:
1. If the Nexus 5 has US LTE and keeps the same price point but starts with 16 GB I'm sure it will temp many of us...
2. I am sure we will have something by the end of the year/beginning of next year (that is when the Nexus 5 is projected to be released)
3. thanks for your pledge, it has been updated
Money's getting tight here too but I'll throw down $40. It's totally worth being able to run alternate ROMs on this thing. It's too bad ATT did something exclusive with Samsung for this phone because it's really great.

@thatbigmoose have you tried the proof of concept for our phone yet? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=45310586&postcount=217 I figure you will be the best one out of us to mess with it...
I just tried it. Can confirm that I was able to load the SS recovery, but didn't try anything else.
