**Make certain that your reactivation lock in security settings is off before beginning this process**
1. Take the NG3 OTA update.
2. Download and install Towelroot-v3.apk(this version does not require internet access).
3. Place your phone into "Download Mode" (press and hold the Home, Volume Down, and Power keys until the phone powers on and displays warning screen, then press Volume Up key) and flash the G870A_NE4_Stock_Kernel using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
4. Open the Towelroot app from your app drawer and press "Make it Rain" to root your device.
5. Power off then boot into "Download Mode" again and flash the G870A_NG3_Stock_Kernel also in Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
6. Download SuperSu to manage root access. Done!
Troubleshooting:
1. If the NG3 OTA update fails consider flashing the G870AUCU1ANE4_Full_Odin.tar to return to stock then take the NG3 OTA update, (or place the G870A_NE4toNG3_OTA.zip onto your ext-sdcard and sideload from stock recovery). Once updated to NG3 continue to Step 2 above.
2. The most common cause of an Odin flash failure is a bad usb port or cable. Please check before reporting a failure.
Notes:
1. After flashing the NE4 kernel your phone may run a little wonky and towelroot may not root on the first try. If that happens reboot and try towelroot once again. Once rooted and after flashing the NG3 kernel your phone will once again run like a champ!
2. The above process will not affect your User Data or Knox Warranty Flag.

Nope.
Does anyone have a list of the benefits of updating to NG3?
I just rooted my new phone on NE4 and I want to know whether it's worth taking the time.
Thanks for the How-to! Worked great for me!
Any benefits on ng3 over stock?
Root possible for 'straight out-of-the-box' G870AUCU1ANG3???
I've looked and looked around the forums here and have come to the conclusion that the AT&T S 5 I recently picked up is, sadly, unable to be rooted. Does anyone here know if this is true? As the title suggests, my phone seems to have come loaded with G870AUCU1ANG3. Is it possible that it came with the previous iteration (NE4, I think??) and I didn't avoid an update, thus meaning I can flash the earlier version? Can I even tell whether it's possible to 'revert' to NE4 (or whatever it would be)? Is any of this even possible without having been previously rooted, or am I wasting my time searching this out? Naive but earnest questions... sorry if I'm in the wrong place here. I promise, I poked around the site for a few days in search of clarity before posting.

There shouldn't be any reason why you can't follow the instructions in the 1st post of this thread starting with step 2.
I've been searching for a while and can't find anything about using this root method and then being able to install safestrap. Has anyone been successful in doing this? Do I need to downgrade before and does anybody have the downgrade file? FYI Just bought my phone last night and was successful in rooting.

Never mind, I figured it out. If you have the active you need to downgrade the kernel to NE4 like you do if you need root. Then you install Safestrap 3.75. I'm doing a Nandroid backup as I type. I'm going to re-flash the NG3 stock kernel when I'm done and hopefully that will be fine.
If it bricks, I can always take it back since I blocked the knox counter... BTW I'm on At&T
I downgraded to the NE4 to root. Along with others here I have to ask, what are, if any, benefits to upgrading the kernel?

Not sure I understand the question but I will take a shot......typically the kernel, modules, and non-hlos.bin have to match or else you may experience issues such as no wifi, lag, etc. The NE4 and NG3 kernel and modules may be similar enough that you will not experience issues immediately but they may develop later unless you reflash the NG3 kernel to match your modules and non-hlos.

THanks XDA
Been away along time. Had iphones for the last 6 years. Use to go here all the time in the Kaiser days (Att Tilt) if any of you remember. I see XDA has still been kicking ass while I've been gone! Glad to be back and Thank You everyone especially first poster for the guide to root my Att GS5 Active.
THANK YOU
Working perfectly. ..thank you. ..g
There was a small update released today. Can someone that is rooted grab it from their fota/cache folder and send to me so that I can update this guide? Thanks.
WORKED! AWESOME!
Now... I have installed SuperSU. Was that left out of the first post?
Also, if I do not flash the NG3 Stock Kernel back afterwards, will I experience funkiness?
Thanks again!
Let me pre-apologize because this has probably been asked a million times already but I haven't been able to find it.
Here's the quick rundown:
I towel rooted my AT&T galaxy S5
Afterwards it failed to complete any upgrades
This led me to think the same thing will happen when lollipop rolls out
I followed the unroot/downgrade guide posted by shortydoggg
This changed my firmware to an earlier version than what I had
I now get the update notices but the update won't complete
Instead of failing at 25% when I had towelroot, it now fails at 32%
I saw a post about the bootloader being incorrect but I haven't seen a solution yet
Big question? How do I resolve this where I will be able to receive the newest updates?
OTA updates are depenant on so many conditions (file permissions, ...) That they often fail even if you didn't root your device and simply reset/reflshed the ROM using Samsung Kies. I've been there.
If you can fully wipe and reflash the ROM using Samsung kies and the OTA still fails, locate your nearest att service center (not mobile retail stores), and take it in. Show them the OTA errors out (don't check for updates for 24 hours so you can let the att rep do it and see it) and they will reflash the ROM for you using their proprietary software. This will most likely get your OTA updates working again. Their software is similar to our Odin but for some reason it also does some extra stuff to your phone that Odin and kies don't.
You can take it in and they'll flash it for you even if kies doesn't recognize your phone. Just go in and complain about the OTA failing, don't make any suggestions and let the att tech genius offer you if you wanna flash and say yes please
Oh and don't forget to backup your files before hands.
*** Your question most likely belongs to the Q&A section.

Sorry for being a little dense but there is more than one step 3.
Do you mean step 3 under the first section:
3. Place your phone into "Download Mode" (press and hold the Home, Volume Down, and Power keys until the phone powers on and displays warning screen, then press Volume Up key) and flash the G900A_ND3_Stock_Kernel using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+)
Or the step 3 under the Notes section:
3. Should the NG3 ota update fail consider returning to stock NCE by flashing the G900A_Downgrade_to_NCE.tar using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+) then taking the NG3 OTA update (or place the G900A_NCEtoNG3_OTA.zip onto your ext-sdcard and sideload from stock recovery). Once updated to NG3 continue from Step 2 above.
Thank you for your help
Step 3 under the notes section.
Hey all,
Thought I'd let those of you that have an AT&T Tab S 8.4 know that Lollipop has been released today. Happened to be on the AT&T Software update page here: http://www.att.com/esupport/softwareUpdateArticle.jsp?sid=KB425812&cv=820 and noticed it listed the update.
Manually checked for updates on my tablet, it's downloading now. My 8.4 on AT&T is totally stock.
Downloading now... 1.1GB
manually checking shows nothing for me
Mine wasn't too laggy after the upgrade. But as I know from places like XDA usually a very good idea to do a full system wipe which I did.
What I am most thankful for is there is now an option to remove that Samsung screen that has those Samsung widgets that go full page. Can't recall what it is called. Yeah I know could have got rid of that using a 3rd party launcher in 4.4 but so happy Samsung put option there to disable it finally. To get rid of it, long press blank space like you were going to add a widget, then click Home Screen Settings, then uncheck "Content Home Screen".
Has anyone who rooted with kingroot updated? I'm assuming it'll kill root, just curious if I need to unroot prior, or if the update will still install. I'll post the answer tomorrow after I update.
I've had some Samsung devices which will update while rooted, and some that will not.

Not sure it will work.
Maybe try to adapt the method given by ashyx here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/guide-how-to-root-tripping-knox-kitkat-t3129484

I'm rooted with Kingroot and it's currently downloading the update. If you load Xposed Framework and Wanam Xposed, under Security hacks there's a setting for Fake System Status that allows you to set it to Original.
I'll follow up when the download finishes.
Update: The download completed but the install failed and then got stuck in a boot loop. Ended up having to go to the Samsung place at Best Buy to have them re-flash KitKat. Now the tab is telling me I have to wait 24 hours to check for updates. I'm sure everything will be good now that I'm back on a factory image.

Turn off automatic date and time and manually advance it by a day, and try again.
When they re-flashed KitKat did it wipe your tablet? The OTA failed me when rooted, failed me after un-installing adaway and un-rooting and removing KingUser. I cannot do a firmware upgrade via Kies 3 as it's not available. I cannot do an emergency firmware recover via Kies 3 as it's not soft bricked. I can't find either the KitKat or the Lollipop firmwares online anywhere... Currently I have a tablet, works fine, I did a factory reset (in the back of my mind knew this wouldn't work) that has a custom status and won't take the OTA.
If anyone knows where I can find the KitKat firmware, or the OTA, please let me know.
Or maybe someone could grab the OTA off their tablet after downloading prior to updating and share the wealth with the community???
Has any kingroot user tried triangle away, unroot via kinguser, and take the OTA?
Also just realized that if I can fail the OTA, I can obviously download it... Where do I grab it from if I wanted to flash it with odin or sideload?

OTA came down successfully while not rooted. The reflash at Best Buy didn't wipe it.
As far as I know, the factory images for the AT&T versions aren't available anywhere, or at least I've been unable to find them. They obviously exist because I'm pretty sure the guy at Best Buy used Kies to flash with an image that's available to him from Samsung.
I re-rooted last night in the attempt of using triangle away to clear customs status, then un-rooting. This was odd because device status still shows custom but download mode shows official and Knox is 0.
While I was briefly rooted again I downloaded the OTA in the hopes of copying it to my PC and updating via ADB Sideload... Couldn't find it. If anyone knows where Samsung puts these I'll grab it and post it to share.
im not rooted, performed a factory reset, and my device still doesn't see any updates. Can somebody provide a link to the ROM?

The OTA gets downloaded to /cache. If you are rooted you can see it. But the OTA is not a complete ROM, just a differential to the ROM you have.

Turns out there is a imei problem with the tablet that is preventing the download. My imei number is paired with a IPhone 4. Anyway will take a few day to fix then the upgrade should work.
I get the same. I wiped my device hoping for a different outcome, and still no update.
I found this in the thread below.
It is an old tread but I'll comment anyway. SM-T807 is the 3G version while SM-T805 is the LTE version. Both Hardware (CPU/GPU) and comms modules are different. So 805 LTE (which has Lollipop) firmware won't work for 807 (no Lollipop is currently available nor Samsung plans to release soon).

John.
After not being able to take the OTA after rooting, even after un rooting, not being able to find the OTA and sideload (not in /cache), and not able use Kies or Odin I finally took it to the Samsung kiosk at my bestbuy.
They reflashed 4.4.2, didn't wipe anything, and immediately downloaded and successfully installed the lollipop update after getting home and on WiFi.
Just don't mention that you rooted ;')
I have (or had) an AT&T branded S5 that was previous rooted and running Safestrap (I don't recall the BL version). Due to some EXTREME idiocy on my part, I took an OTA update two days ago, which updated and synched everything to G900AUCU2ANG3.
Naturally, this borked root. But there's some weirdness going on. Even after the OTA update, the phone's device status still says "Custom". And I still see the custom text when the phone boots. Is this Knox related?
Further oddness is that the phone keeps trying to pull down a second OTA update that looks identical to the first based on the filesize (over 400 MB). It goes through the motion, boots into recovery, and starts installing this second update, but stops partway through. Upon rebooting, the phone tells me the update was interrupted and can't be installed.
I realize I may never get root back, but I'm alarmed the phone's status still says "Custom" and that it's trying (and failing) to install this second OTA update.
I've tried factory resetting the phone, both within KitKat and via recovery, but these issues remain. Should I just reapply NG3 via Odin?
Thanks in advance!

Yes, I'm still on 4.4.2. Like I wrote in my OP, though, I'm VERY concerned that this second OTA update keeps failing. I'm also perplexed as to why the device is still in some sort of custom state since I thought taking the OTA update would, in essence, reset everything except user data.
Is my phone borked in some way? I mean, it works just fine otherwise, but the device's inability to install this second OTA update really sticks in my craw.
I might reapply NG3 via Odin and see what happens. Couldn't hurt, right?

If you want root, go to the OP in that post, scroll down to step 4 or the notes section and download the "downgrade to nce.zip" flash that in odin "ap" slot. Then root with towel root. After that you can either download titanium backup and fees the ota's or use that same thread to upgrade to the OF2 version and keep root.
Edit:
If you want to just take the OTA's and not root your phone then still download the "downgrade to nce.zip" flash in odin but don't root. The ota's will push through with no problem then. But you won't be able to downgrade and root if you take the OTA's all the way up to oc4 i believe.
My last post got no attention, so here is my second attempt.
A software update rolled out for my 5.1 Lollipop S5 Active, and since I wasn't really utilizing my root extensively, I decided I'd get rid of it to receive this update. Unfortunately, I didn't do a whole lot of research and decided I should start by uninstalling my SuperSU. After all, it seemed harmless. I then rebooted, and the thing will not surpass the AT&T boot animation.
The symptoms pointed towards a simple soft brick (i.e. gets to animation, recovery and bootloader not locked). However, I have not been able to successfully flash a fresh firmware onto the device with Odin. SamMobile only has one firmware release for this device, and it is the 4.4.2 version. Is this why the file is failing to flash? If so, how can I get around this issue? Thanks in advance!

Now if I remember correctly (if i am wrong someone please correct me) if your phone was on 5.0+ then you can not downgrade. Same thing with the build number where the old is NF4 i think, and the newest is OF3 with 5.0. my advice is to scour the internet and find the newest flash file. i know there is a 5.0 out there somewhere.
