Knox or not - Galaxy S 4 Active Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear friends,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 Active GT-I9295. I got it with Jellybean where in download mode I saw knox warranty void 0x0 however after updating to lollipop 5.0.1 it dissapear and I saw the following in Download Mode:
Odin Mode
Product Name: GT-I9295
Current Binary: Samsung Official
System Status: Official
CSB-Config-LSB: 0x30
Secure Download: Enable
Write Protection: Enable
eMMC Burst Mode enabled
What does that mean that I no more have Knox Security installed and I can flash custom recovery without tripping knox or it is just hidden?
P.S In Apps Manager i see that KMLS Agent and other related apk for knox is installed.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Can someone help please?

Not much investigation done on i9295 about Knox. Since approx 95% hardware is identical to i9505 the findings about that device is best guess. Links and knowledge gathered here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=56955843
Despite so called Knox free ROMs where all related apps and libs are removed, to my understanding and supported by many posts in i9505 thread, this is not Knox-free when bootloader still has Knox features. Downgrade bootloader only or flash Jellybean stock ROM on top of this so called Knox-free ROM or any Knox bootloader will most likely trip knox 0x1.
Own experience:
KitKat NE4 - flashed CF-Auto-root for I9505 - CWM 6035 - *6047 - *6051 - CM11 (several official) - TWRP 2840 - stock Lolipop OB4.
NEVER downgraded bootloader (or felt urge to mess with modem /non-hlos.bin relationship)
Knox 0x0 all the time and still reports 0x0 when checked by app PHONE INFO *Samsung*
Can confirm identical Download mode text for OB4.
READ tips in my thread and learn how to flash custom recovery 1st time correct and later perhaps zip install SuperSU 2.46 (free) to gain root.
Rather comprehensive guide provided by @ANX13TY http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=59326914 still you ask how to throw phone into towel root? Towel root is insecure kernel. Fastest way isn't necessary best way.
CF-Auto-root 442 NH2 might work as well when rooted 442 kernel run in stock recovery...

Good News Downgrade is Possible from Android 4.3 to 4.1.2 with knox bootloader

Dear Friends
It is possible to downgrade from Android 4.3 to Android 4.1.2 via Mobile Odin 3.85.apk
Don't use windows Odin program for downgrade
Just download Mobile Odin 3.85.apk from Internet ( registered apk version from torrent )
and download android Jelly bean 4.1.2 from www.sammobile.com
and copy your stock rom md5 file in your Internal Memory and SD Card
and Flash through Mobile Odin 3.85.
I have done it successfully
its not removed knox bootloader but we can downgrade to Android 4.1.2 and its working smoothly.
No problem at all.
Try it on your own risk !!! I got success coz I Love risks.
And if you go into download mode do you still see the Knox flag?

Yes knox flag is there and I already have knox 0x1 warranty void
but i have rooted my SGS3 successfully and super su installed on my Android 4.1.2 which not possible on Android 4.3 coz of knox interference so I think knox side effect will end by flash via mobile odin.
You made my day! Thanks, but people allready knew that it was possible to downgrade to 4.1.2.
They are looking for a solution to downgrade the bootloader, not the firmware.
knox is a pain in the backside!!
i had many S3 devices, luckily all are still on the old bootloader!! bought an S4 mini few months ago, luckily that was on the old bootloader also, so no knox for any of them, few weeks ago i decided to get the S4, came with knox! sold it, found an old firmware S4, was on 4.2.2 but somehow had the knox bootloader, sold it, bought 4 S4 devices in the space of 2 weeks, all with knox bootloader, ive now given up on S4 and Samsung all together!! ive since then gona back to my old rooted knox free S3 and S4 mini,
no longer will i be buying any more Samsung devices in the future, they can stick it with knox!!
if your reading this thread its probably too late to downgrade your bootloader but i highly advise DO NOT UPGRADE YOUR FIRMWARE!!!
if your rooted keep your old stock firmware thats knox free and keep using custom roms instead!!

Thanks

You are right. Knox is a real pain!!! However, i did manage to root S4 i9505 4.3 and Note3 4.3 by doing a factory reset to clear any security updates, and avoided setting up wifi (which will automatically download new security updates)/avoided auto security updates downloads in settings, and use Kingo for rooting.
Like you said, it's not advisable to upgrade at this time.

I believe root is required for Mobile odin pro. Were you rooted then before downgrading with mobile odin? I have been unable to root my SGS3 4.3 MKC without triggering knox flag. It seems that i cannot use mobile odin to downgrade the firmware and then root afterward.

At least for me, was not possible to root 4.3 without triggering knox ans to use mobile odin you need root access, so.. If you succeed rooting without triggering knox, you will have flag 0x0 at the end with mobile odin.

What are you saying here? Mobile odin normally works only when you are already rooted ???

Other Solution
Nooononono.. ALL YOU GUYS NEED TO SEARCH FOR 4.3 firmware's modem file and install it when you installed 4.1.2 rom.. so first install 4.1.2 onto your device and then look for 4.3 modem file and install that, too. This is what you need to do!! Your IMEI will appear then right. This is because 4.3 firmware converts your EFS version to EFS v2 (originally you have EFS v1) and 4.1.2 rom's modem isn't compatible with EFSv2.. SO ALL YOU NEED TO DO to look for 4.3 modem and install it with 4.1.2 rom!! This is 4.3 modem's code "XXELJ2".
I hope i could help you! ([email protected] <-- if u have questions)
kitkat to jellybean
how about downgrading from 4.4.2 to 4.2.2 on s4 mini Gt-i9195
Lol
It worked perfectly.
Without loss of IMEI.
Tks
Samsung Galaxy S3 SCH_R530U (US Cellular) 4.3
It's ROOTED (I have access to SU, Root Checker says I'm rooted) and KNOX is shut off/not running.. I have the developer options on.. When I insert a SIM (Searching for service).. When I don't put one in (NO SIM CARD)... I am not getting any prompts to enter an unlock code...
#1 Did I do everything correct...?
#2 If I need to downgrade to 4.2.1, where do I find it....?
PS... I was playing with the About device tab... I clicked on Kernel Version or Dive status a bunch of times and now I'm getting a notification in the shade screen...? (Face Palm -_- )

[Q] Can I safely flash any older 4.3 stock FW over XXUEML9?

Hello,
I'd like to ask if I can safely downgrade my current XXUEML9 ROM to some older releases of 4.3 s3 i9305 official Samsung ROMs.
Why do that? I've read some reports that first releases of 4.3 ROMs for i9305 could be rooted with kingo without tripping knox flag and the XXUEML9 release has been reported to be tripping the flag (some new samsung's security measures introduced meanwhile), so I think it could be worth trying but better safe than sorry - I know I can't downgrade to 4.1.2 or whatever under 4.3 but what about new 4.3 to "older" 4.3? Just wondering if there aren't safety patches in the bootloader itself that prevent users from downgrading to anything lower than current FW
Thanks for your help.
you can do it safely...i would recommend doing a factory reset after it...just to be sure it won't mess with kingoapp...i did it without problems(i tripped knox way before doing this)

thanks for the info,
I plan to do it that way:
1. enter factory recovery -> factory wipe
2. odin -> flash oldest 4.3 i9305 stock image
3. if bootloops -> repeat step 1.
4. kingo root -> let's see if knox stays 0x0, ofc I'll let you know in the thread here
5. whatever ROM, but keeping stock kernel and stock recovery (otherwise all the steps above pointless)
Kingo trips knox

I doubt it. Kingo either roots the phone or fail, and then gives you option of installing custom recovery which trips Knox flag.

seems that XXUEMKC is the oldest 4.3 - it has the release date 28.11.2013
well, looks like a lottery with kingo root; but as far as I read in some forums some were successful with rooting that way and keeping the flag 0x0 with older FWs and everybody reporting using kingo on latest FWs says it had tripped KNOX
and, to be clear - as of now, there aren't any other ways to root i9305/4.3 than:
a) kingo (knox lottery)
b) CF-Root (trips knox)
..
..
z) waiting for miracle and some new rooting methods?

I think you are right. I have MKC firmware but not able to root with Kingo. It always failed and asked if i wanted to install custom recovery with root which will trip Knox flag, and i always clicked 'NO' button. My knox flag remains 0x0 but phone not rooted.
so, all the things I planned turn out to be pointless
the ***MKC PDA FW is the oldest one of 4.3 for i9305
you've got no root on MKC via kingo, and I got some information from a Polish forum, that kingo did the root on MKC but tripped the flag anyway (I can only assume it tries to get the root through some dirty tricks via cable and if it fails that way, it offers to flash custom recovery in order to flash apk and su binary to the system).
so, for the time being CF-Root seems the only reasonable option to root - you'll trip knox either way, but without sending all your sensitive data to china and back.

[Q] Flashing CM11 from stock 4.1.1 (about KNOX)

Hello, I have a i9305 with stock 4.1.1 (not rooted yet). I would like to try flashing CM11. When I look into forum and found some users get stuck by the KNOX flag. I just have some simple questions (hopefully): Do I need to update bootloader (to the one with KNOX) in order to install CM11, after I root and install custom recovery? If yes, will installation of CM11 trigger KNOX flag, even I have not flashed stock 4.3 before?
Thank you.
I'm knoxed, but i believe CM kernel is compatible with both bootloaders...

you do not need to update bootloader to flash cm11. the installation of cm11 cant trigger knox cause there is no knox bootloader on your device, you will get knox bootloader ONLY by updating to 4.3, manually or ota doesnt matter. try not to get the knox bootloader

Can TWRP be flashed without tripping KNOX? (Need TWRP only- not trying to root phone)

I'd like to flash TWRP onto my Note 5, but want to be absolutely sure it will NOT trip the KNOX counter. Is this a possibility at all, or does flashing any custom recovery lead to KNOX being tripped?
I am NOT looking to root the phone - I just need TWRP. (I am fully aware that at the moment, all rooting methods will trip the KNOX counter.)
Thanks!
Tom

It will trip Knox.
Thanks for confirming - that's what I figured as well.
I'm guessing that flashing ANYTHING other than the unmodified stock image would result in Knox being tripped...

Your Modification For your Phone has triggered (Tripped) KNOX as Custom not Official. The 0X1 Means Modified, And your Warranty is Void. If you are in the TW (TouchWiz) ROM, you can't update OTA via Phone Settings.
KNOX is a Samsung Security for a phone which protect the original phone so the phone is Untouchable for modification from Unsigned OEMs (e.g Custom ROM, Recovery, and other related to it). For now we can't change the KNOX Statement from Tripped to Un-Tripped (0X1 to 0X0 which is the default Statement)

You can update ota with tripped knox.
You can't update only when modifying stock rom or rooting also using custom recovery.
If you want ota just flash stock !
