CNN Notifications not working with Active Display? - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Running stock/unrooted 5.0.2
ESPN, SMS, Email, etc...all work great with active display...but for some reason CNN does not. When I hit the power button and jump to the lockscreen a breaking news notification will be there...but active display never picks it up for some reason.
Anyone else have this issue?
Thanks,
BA

Application recommendations (Calendar, email, notifications)

Hello,
I've just recently switched from a Windows Mobile phone to the Hero, and there are a few features I miss from my old phone. I'm hoping that someone can recommend some apps to fill the gap; I've looked around on the forum and not yet found anything that seems like it would do what I want.
Calendar:
The calendar app that comes with the phone works great for everything except one simple feature - it displays all events on the monthly view with the same icon. My old phone used to have different icons for events in the morning, afternoon or 'all day'. This made it a lot easier to tell them apart at a glance. Edit: You also can't flick the screen to the side to scroll through days.
Mail:
This is just a minor annoyance. You can't swap between emails or email accounts by flicking the screen to the side.
Notifications:
If I've missed a call, received a text message or something of that sort, I'd like the phone to vibrate every 5 minutes until I acknowledge that I missed something. Currently all I can find is making the track ball glow, which isn't terribly useful if the phone is in my pocket.
If anyone can recommend some programs to fix those issues, that'd be great. (By the way, I'm using the Modaco custom ROM v2.2) Thanks!
Steve
For text notifications, grab SMS Popup from the Market. Brilliant little app imo
For the calendar get Pure Grid Calendar and turn on the Timeline option in settings

Missed call can repeat notifications for missed calls and texts. You can also set the vibration pattern.
For notifications, I use Missed Call. Seems to work well for missed calls and SMS messages which is all I need it for.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I tried SMS popup and it worked fine for texts, but as expected, it didn't do anything for missed calls. I've now installed Missed Call; I'll see how well it works tomorrow.

As for Pure Grid Calendar, that looks good. However it's a paid app; does it work well? The reviews generally were positive, but I'm paranoid about paying for something that doesn't work quite how I'd like it. In particular I forgot to mention that I need it to sync with Google Calendar - the guy's website suggests it does in some of the comments but doesn't specifically say so. Do you know if that's definitely the case?
Thanks again guys.
Pure Grid Calendar and it's cousin Pure Calendar are paid apps but you do get to use them for about 24 hours for free. If you then install you get a refund. My understanding is that this happens for all paid apps but perhaps someone who knows more about market can confirm.
As to syncing with Google calendar, again my understanding is that it is the device itself that syncs. In each calendar app, including HTC calendar, you just choose which calendars you want that app to display. The pure calendars are the same.
Personally I use Pure Calendar rather than the grid as it shows an agenda style widget in a 4x2 format.

I read that somewhere else as well, and then went to check the Market. That's indeed what the Google Terms of Service said; you can get a refund within 24 hours as long as you haven't tried downloading the program before.

Ah, that does make sense. That way each designer doesn't have to program their own syncing code.

I actually tried the Pure Grid Calendar yesterday, and I'm happy with it. I particularly like how it brings up a pop-up of the day's events if you tap a day.
I'll have a look at the Pure non-grid Calendar as well later, as I can't access the market from where I am at the moment. I assume its advantage over the basic Android calendar widget is that it displays multiple days?
Thanks to you both for your help.
Recurring Events
I am new to Android from WinMo as well. I am having trouble with recurring events. I work a rotating (2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off; I KNOW!!! ) schedule for 2 wks with one workgroup then repeating for two weeks with another workgoup, then starting over.
This was not a problem with the calendar in my WinMo Tilt. I could "program" my work schedule in my phone and look out as far as I wanted to. I miss my calendar!
Am I missing something, or is the android calendar completely lacking in this area? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Notifications?

I use my phone for Calendar and meeting events, etc
I had a Palm years ago and a Nokia communicator that would Notify of an evet or Voicemail and keep chiming until acknowledged.
How do I get something like this on the Note? If I am not next to the phone and hear the whistle or check it, I don't know if anything triggered?
Noled will show a fake notification light which works well for me. It also has a vibrate every x minutes function that I'm not sure is working for me. I tried vibrate notify but I had problems.
It might be conflicting with smart vibrator. Not sure.
Still looking for a working vibrate reminder.

I too use my android devices for events, tasks, project planning and such and it is so much better than the Palm was or will ever be!
As for the app I recommend using: pocket informant. It works great with toodledo and google calendar (and also gtasks, but I don't use that).
*see below for answer @ question.

You might want to use: Missed message flasher free. It has the option to light up the screen, use the notification lights and vibrate with:
- calendar, email, gmail, go sms pro, g+, gtalk, gvoice, k9mail, missed calls, skype, sms & mms, whatsapp and if the phone is set into silent mode, you can also choose to disable the vibrate option. Also in the donate version you can choose the option 'other apps'.
I use it with pocket informant and maildroid (free version) and it works absolutely great!

Interesting stuff here. How about missed calls or VM's?

Its fine. The nature of amoled is that only the lit portion of the screen drains battery. It's pretty minimal. Give it a try.

Missed call are supported but I don't know what VM's are. If it's a messaging type of thing that is than also support I guess.
I think the program just uses the notification bar as a source to act because pocket informant isn't in the list and it does still reacts when a reminder is sent to me via the program itself.

Notification Issues (MLB At Bat & CNN)

Hi. Long time iPhone user but new to Android as of two weeks ago. Bought the HTC One (AT&T) and am loving it so far.
However, I have been having issues concerning notifications through a couple apps. Specifically the MLB At Bat app and the CNN app. Let me start by saying that I have received notifications without issue when it comes to email, texts, and Facebook.
Now, with At Bat, I have notifications set up in the settings for the app (specifically for my favorite baseball team), and I technically do get notifications. What I mean by that is, if I happen to turn on my phone, I will see that a notification previously came in. However, I do not receive any audio or vibration feedback to accompany the notification. So, the phone doesn't actually alert me. The same case is true with the CNN app. In the settings for the app, I have set up to receive notifications for breaking news. Again, I technically get the notifications sent to my phone, so they will be there when I happen to check the phone for whatever reason. But when the notification is sent, I am not alerted in any way (no tone or vibration).
As I said before, I get notifications (accompanied with audio tone and vibration) without issue when it comes to emails, texts, and Facebook. I have scowered the system settings and the settings on the individual apps but everything appears to be in order. Thanks in advance for any help or direction you fine folks can provide.
edit: Also, I have uninstalled and reinstalled both apps, but nothing has changed.

Pre-Purchase questions

Hi, before I buy one wanted to find out three things if someone could assist.
-With voice commands and driving, is it true I still need to press an on screen button to send a message to someone via SMS
-With voice commands, can you schedule an appointment with a synced calendar other than Googles. I sync to an exchange calendar and when I played with google now a while back, it only created appointments via voice to the google calendar.
-with active notifications, what happens if you have three notifications? Does it also always show the screen when you take it out of your pocket. Hoping that it does?
thanks all
Voice commands will work similar to how they have on other Google NOW capable devices. So yes, you still need to press "Send message" to send it. As for the exchange stuff. If you could do it on another device, you can do it on this one.
Active notifications will show what you tell them to show. There are settings that allow you to choose what apps display. As the active notifications use the proximity sensor to decide when to display, it will indeed show whenever it's removed from your pocket. If you have multiple notifications, dragging your active lock upward will bring you to the app that produced the most recent notification.
Is that about as clear as mud? I suck at explaining things. Lmk if you need any clarification.
Thanks, just curious on two parts. If you have multiple notifications, the only icon you see is the most recent. The only way to know the others is by swiping the status bar I assume?
If you have no notifications, I assume the screen will not turn on, is that correct?
thanks

If you have no notifications the phone will show you the time when you pick it up or pull it from out of your pocket.

[Q] Lockscreen notifications

I'm back on android after a brief foray to iosland after a gazillion years. But seriously, what do I need to get notifications on my S6E lockscreen?
+ I don't have the "While Locked" option
+ I have all my notifications checked, all contents e.g.
+ I have toggled notifications off and on, set priority to off and on
+ I have removed and re-added my gmail account
But on my lockscreen, it only wakes up for text messsage alerts and even that for a brief, what 2 secs.
No wakey, wakey gmail alerts.
No wakey, wakey news alerts from my various news app.
Anyone has any guidance or solution, partial or full please?
ATT 128gb S6 Edge - popcorn rooted only
I'm not an xda newbie; just can't login with my old ID as I lost my old login/email account
As it turns out, this is a known problem with the Lollipop implementation. It seems like everyone else is only getting text alerts on a sleeping device.
Yep, known issue. See here: http://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyS6/comments/3almjd/s6_push_notification_delay_bug_anyone_else/
Try disabling IPv6 on your network. That seems to have fixed it for me!
