[Q] Att Galaxy S5 lollipop update while using Cricket service - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 5

I'm currently using a At&t branded S5 on cricket. I've tried to update with no luck and after reading here noticed I'm not even on the latest firmware. My S5 is running 4.4.2 and not 4.4.4. Am I able to receive the update? Can I force it in anyway? What are my options as far as getting the update?

Hi, I have the same phone on straight talk service, and I received the update the day it came out... Are u checking for the update while connected to WiFi?

Yes I'm checking while connected to Wi-Fi. It's funny because all my other phones I got updates while on Straight Talk but I have received none while with Cricket. Only been on Cricket about 2 months now

Maybe throw one of your straight talk Sims in the phone and try it? I'm not sure...

I actually tried that last night and no luck, even searched for a old Att sim I had laying around and couldn't find it. Has to be something with the phone or service because even if lollipop wasn't released and my device serial number wasn't in the roll out so far the 4.4.4 update should've been available.

Was it a working sim, and did u configure the apn, save, and reboot the phone?
I have the byop 4G LTE straight talk sim for at&t, not sure if that really matters or not...

No the Sim wasn't active and no I didn't configure the APN. I should've tried that. I have the same byop 4g att Sim. I think I'm going to try and take it to best buy and see if they can force the update for me.

Silly question, does it matter if I have the Tmobile sim in phone when I update?

So I just got my Moto X pure edition that ships with a tmobile sim, I connected to wifi and I am downloading the OTA update but I left the tmobile sim in. I am going to be using this phone on AT&T though, so that is why I am asking. I notice in some of the baseband and other labels I see the letters TMO which to me means tmobile but it may be unrelated.
Thanks and sorry if this is a stupid question.
It is the pure it will work on AT&T fine. It supports both networks just fine. The baseband does have the TMO name in it but does not matter. Just keeps it different from the AT&T version.

Thanks, I figured as much but just wanted to be sure.
keep that tmobile sim. AT&T hasn't even released Lollipop yet, so if you throw that tmobile SIM when everyone else is starting to get updates, you should get the update too. If you try to update with the AT&T SIM in, you're going to be waiting quite a while.

With the pure edition it does not matter what Sim you have in the phone. You get your updates from Motorola not the carrier.

[Q] Will the firmware update be pushed down to user on MVNO?

I no longer have an account with AT&T, I am on PureTalk which is one of AT&T's MVNO. Will OTA update be available to me when it becomes available to AT&T users?

Nope. Only a postpaid AT&T sim. Even my AT&T prepaid service tab 4 didn't get the last OTA. Gonna have to hope someone makes a safestrap for L and a flashable. I'm in the same boat with all my devices. Won't ever go postpaid again but then lose the option of any OTAs.

Me too! I bought my gs5 outright from at&t store about a month ago, inserted my straight talk sim, created a new apn, and Ota updated from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4... pre4speed, could u elaborate a little? Are u still on 4.4.2?

That is interesting. I wonder if st has a contract with AT&T? Would make sense, but I don't get them, never have with aio (when it started) and now cricket even tho they are owned by AT&T. And like I said even my prepaid AT&T data only plan on my tab 4 hasn't gotten the OTA to 4.4.4. Hmm, wonder what's up with THAT. lol
Yes DM, I'm still on 4.4.2 on this S5 (insight program) my beloved Note 3 and my tab 4, all prepaid mvno thru AT&T.
I'm wondering how this will work when L comes around since I don't get them, but will need the firmware for any ROM. @muniz_ri will you be updating safestrap and make a 4 part flashable again? Or even a full ODIN?

5.1.1 on GP Nexus 6?

I'm seeing all these announcements for the 5.1.1 OTA rolling out, first AT&T and now Verizon...but has the Google Play/Motorola Store editions gotten it yet? I'm still sitting on 5.1 and not seeing any OTA coming my way.

if you are using att, and have an att sim in your phone, you are waiting for att to aprove the ota. BUT.. you can always take your sim card out, turn on wifi, and check if there are any updates available through your settings.

*Faceplam* Why did I not think of that? I have a Verizon SIM in my phone but I never thought that OTAs would be based on the SIM you have in the phone when you have a device you bought on Google Play.

Probably because this is the first device that has started dishing updates based on sim card.
Typically, its either been dishes out by the oem (including google) or by the carrier for branded devices... Based on the software build. For example, if I had an O2 UK phone but a Three UK sim, I would get the update from O2. But not on this device.

will att software updater only work with att sim?

My nexus 5 recently crapped out on me and I picked up an at&t s6 edge that I unlocked to use on tmobile.
Obviously, its night and day compared to my nexus as far as development..
Anyways, when I go to at&t software update on the phone it says I am up to date, but im on the old OE2 build and want to update.
Will it only update if Im using at&t sim? or is something else wrong?
I'm 99% certain you need an AT&T SIM installed for AT&T Software Update to see updates.

I just got a AT&T unlocked LG G2 and updated Android with no sim in phone just turned WiFi on and check for updates. To check addition update after successfully update set clock 1 day ahead and check updates again and so no sim is needed.
Perhaps you can Odin your updates without an ATT sim.

OK.The first time it worked without a AT&T sim.I set my phone back to factory and it said it's not registered yet.So I just took a unactivated AT&T sim,put it in phone and check updates and it downloaded the update. So you do need a AT&T sim card to get the updates.

I also believe you can root your phone and get the updates from here on the forum and flash the update on your phone. What kind of phone you got and are you willing to root your phone or buy a AT&T sim from somewhere but I think that sim has to be active. I have a AT&T sim from Go Phone service that cut off but it still worked for updating my phone.
yeah, I updated finally with a friends att sim. such a pain. i hate how locked down they have this phone.
Yes I agree.

Updating unlocked ATT Galaxy S5 now on T-mobile network

I assume my idea would work but here is the issue:
My wife has an unlocked ATT Galaxy S5 that we are now using on T-Mobile. Obviously she can't get the recent security updates and marshmallow when it comes out. I don't really want to go the odin route with her phone and risk our marriage (lol) with wiping her data. If I put a sim card from ATT from a friend in her phone, it should then allow it to receive updates correct? I assume our old sim card, which is not associated with a number on the ATT network would not work.
I'm not sure. I'm on AT&T and I can't get the last two or three updates to even register on my phone. Usually someone uploads an OTA zip that you can boot into recovery mode and install, but the latest ones have been neglected. Hopefully someone with more knowledge of the situation can give you a better answer, though.
I'm currently using Net 10 service on my Att S5 active and seem to get OTA updates.

Hmmmmm that's interesting. Maybe, then, we don't need to worry about them coming eventually.
Unfortunately not seeing the Marshmallow update via my ATT S5 running on T-Mobile. The phone says it is "up to date"......

Same here. It's really a bit of a shame. I'm thinking of selling line on swappa just to turn around and buy the t-mobile variant so I can root

If I can I'm going to try a friends att sim card in it to see if it can then download it.
If you throw an AT&T sim in, make sure its from an android device with LTE. Cruise the web a little a make a phone call. reboot after 15 minutes so AT&T's systems recognize your model and software before trying the software update.
Although the best bet would be taking it either to a AT&T service center or a Samsung shop in Best Buy, they can flash the update for you w/o wiping it
you can backup the device with Samsung smart switch on a laptop and keep most of everything just in case anything happens.
Flash PA2 firmware through ODIN and then these through recovery:
