5.1.1 on GP Nexus 6? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm seeing all these announcements for the 5.1.1 OTA rolling out, first AT&T and now Verizon...but has the Google Play/Motorola Store editions gotten it yet? I'm still sitting on 5.1 and not seeing any OTA coming my way.

if you are using att, and have an att sim in your phone, you are waiting for att to aprove the ota. BUT.. you can always take your sim card out, turn on wifi, and check if there are any updates available through your settings.

*Faceplam* Why did I not think of that? I have a Verizon SIM in my phone but I never thought that OTAs would be based on the SIM you have in the phone when you have a device you bought on Google Play.

they are, and the Verizon ota started yesterday.
and again, you can update to the generic version, just take the sim out

Probably because this is the first device that has started dishing updates based on sim card.
Typically, its either been dishes out by the oem (including google) or by the carrier for branded devices... Based on the software build. For example, if I had an O2 UK phone but a Three UK sim, I would get the update from O2. But not on this device.

Unbrand a Carrier Nexus 6?

Well, I don't yet have a Nexus 6 (currently on my Moto X 2014, but that may soon change), so I figured I'd put this out there:
Google has stated that there may be delays for those who buy Nexus devices from carriers, but I have a plan:
What if we just unlock the bootloader and flash the factory image for the 6 from Google's site? Wouldn't that get rid of any carrier crap (not SIM locks, but bloat) and allow you to get the fastest OTAs?
I'd like to hear what you guys think, because I haven't read anything about this and don't have one to test it on.
The "bloatware" that comes from carriers (very limited) are installed via Play Store depending on what SIM card you're using so theres no way around this. In my opinion, carrier bloatware isn't the problem, its bloatware from Google. All these unnecessary apps (e.g. Google Books, Google Earth, Google+, Google Photos, Google Movies, etc) is the bloatware concern, not from your carrier.
I personally use custom ROMs so OTAs don't really matter to me.
I assume your talking about the AT&T version since the T-Mobile version is the same as from the play store and there is no solid info about the Verizon version. And nobody uses Sprint anymore so... For the AT&T version there is already info here on how to remove their chaos from the Nexus 6.
As far as OTAs, there is nothing to suggest carrier branded phones will be any slower in getting it, really only the CDMA carriers have the ability to screw up the update process with their licensing. For GSM carriers even if somehow they managed to prevent the updates from going to phones using their SIM cards, you should still be able to update manually.

Cool thanks! I've been reading a whole bunch of stuff saying "carrier versions of the N6 will get slower updates", so I wondered. Thanks for the response!
And yeah, I was mainly talking about the ATT version

Not true... You just complete the phones initial setup without the sim card inserted.
OP, there is a thread in N6 General about "de-branding" the AT&T N6 you might wanna check out

Thats why I said depending on what SIM card you're using. Of course if you don't have a SIM card in the phone, then you won't have any of the apps to be installed from the Play Store.
Personally, just leave the SIM card in and then uninstall the apps. I myself am on T-Mobile and the only app they install is T-Mobile My Account which I already use and the app is quite useful.
The whole processing of using the pin to take the SIM card out is too much of a hassle when you can uninstall the apps faster than putting the SIM card back into the device and then waiting for your device to re-register with the network.
As I've mentioned again, the bloatware is not carrier bloatware (at least not on T-Mobile) but on Google's side with the unnecessary Google Earth, Google Fit, Google Books, Google Movies, etc.

Silly question, does it matter if I have the Tmobile sim in phone when I update?

So I just got my Moto X pure edition that ships with a tmobile sim, I connected to wifi and I am downloading the OTA update but I left the tmobile sim in. I am going to be using this phone on AT&T though, so that is why I am asking. I notice in some of the baseband and other labels I see the letters TMO which to me means tmobile but it may be unrelated.
Thanks and sorry if this is a stupid question.
It is the pure it will work on AT&T fine. It supports both networks just fine. The baseband does have the TMO name in it but does not matter. Just keeps it different from the AT&T version.

Thanks, I figured as much but just wanted to be sure.
keep that tmobile sim. AT&T hasn't even released Lollipop yet, so if you throw that tmobile SIM when everyone else is starting to get updates, you should get the update too. If you try to update with the AT&T SIM in, you're going to be waiting quite a while.

With the pure edition it does not matter what Sim you have in the phone. You get your updates from Motorola not the carrier.

[Q] Will the firmware update be pushed down to user on MVNO?

I no longer have an account with AT&T, I am on PureTalk which is one of AT&T's MVNO. Will OTA update be available to me when it becomes available to AT&T users?

Nope. Only a postpaid AT&T sim. Even my AT&T prepaid service tab 4 didn't get the last OTA. Gonna have to hope someone makes a safestrap for L and a flashable. I'm in the same boat with all my devices. Won't ever go postpaid again but then lose the option of any OTAs.

Me too! I bought my gs5 outright from at&t store about a month ago, inserted my straight talk sim, created a new apn, and Ota updated from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4... pre4speed, could u elaborate a little? Are u still on 4.4.2?

That is interesting. I wonder if st has a contract with AT&T? Would make sense, but I don't get them, never have with aio (when it started) and now cricket even tho they are owned by AT&T. And like I said even my prepaid AT&T data only plan on my tab 4 hasn't gotten the OTA to 4.4.4. Hmm, wonder what's up with THAT. lol
Yes DM, I'm still on 4.4.2 on this S5 (insight program) my beloved Note 3 and my tab 4, all prepaid mvno thru AT&T.
I'm wondering how this will work when L comes around since I don't get them, but will need the firmware for any ROM. @muniz_ri will you be updating safestrap and make a 4 part flashable again? Or even a full ODIN?

[Q] Att Galaxy S5 lollipop update while using Cricket service

I'm currently using a At&t branded S5 on cricket. I've tried to update with no luck and after reading here noticed I'm not even on the latest firmware. My S5 is running 4.4.2 and not 4.4.4. Am I able to receive the update? Can I force it in anyway? What are my options as far as getting the update?

Hi, I have the same phone on straight talk service, and I received the update the day it came out... Are u checking for the update while connected to WiFi?

Yes I'm checking while connected to Wi-Fi. It's funny because all my other phones I got updates while on Straight Talk but I have received none while with Cricket. Only been on Cricket about 2 months now

I actually tried that last night and no luck, even searched for a old Att sim I had laying around and couldn't find it. Has to be something with the phone or service because even if lollipop wasn't released and my device serial number wasn't in the roll out so far the 4.4.4 update should've been available.

Was it a working sim, and did u configure the apn, save, and reboot the phone?
I have the byop 4G LTE straight talk sim for at&t, not sure if that really matters or not...

No the Sim wasn't active and no I didn't configure the APN. I should've tried that. I have the same byop 4g att Sim. I think I'm going to try and take it to best buy and see if they can force the update for me.

October Security Update for USA Unlocked?

Been seeing stories that the October security update was pushed by Samsung for the S20 FE. I've got the USA unlocked model and haven't seen any updates yet. Have they pushed it in the USA yet? Have any of the big carriers pushed it yet?
I haven't got it either. I think sometimes it has something to do with your sim card, even on the unlocked model. I use Visible, so I'm probably not getting it for a while lol.

I don't think that's the issue. The only country the update is being pushed out to at the moment is Germany from what I read on another web site. Hopefully we will be getting it stateside soon. If you have an unlocked like myself then your carrier does not have anything to do with firmware updates.
get the FW manually and force it on the phone with Odin
October update finally arrived this morning for US unlocked. No notification. Just tried a manual update check and there it was.

cant find the U1 firmware yet, but here is the G781B fw https://www.sammobile.com/samsung/galaxy-s20-fe/firmware/#SM-G781B
very likely need patched Odin to flash it. Buyer beware tho, if the U1 FW isnt out yet and you successfully flash any of these, you cant go back until the FW is released
I received ATJ5 update earlier when I manually checked for updates. Seems stable. Touchscreen issues seem much much better so far.

NOT for me. I'm on USA unlocked and just checked. Nothing.
Nothing yet on my USA T-mobile version
Been using my unlocked S20 FE (G781U1) for about a week now, that I got directly from Samsung, and still no updates. Stuck on the September security update.
Coming from an unlocked Pixel 3 that I used for 2 years, this is really weird! I always thought unlocked versions were the first to get the updates.

So, I've noticed that for some reason Samsung unlocked devices seem to get their updates pushed immediately AFTER the big 3 carriers have pushed their updates for some reason.
I'm using the Unlocked version on ATT, and I received the October security update on the 24th. Touch issues do seem improved, no complaints so far.
I've been following this on Reddit and Facebook. Nobody I know or have seen post that has an Unlocked model on T-Mobile is getting the update. If you swap the SIM out for a non-T-Mobile SIM, it will allow it to update. I actually tried an AT&T SIM today, saw it allowed an update, swapped my T-Mobile SIM back in, then it said no updates available (on September patch).
This makes no sense why T-Mobile is not sending the updates to UNLOCKED phones. I have submitted tickets to both Samsung and T-Mobile regarding this delay. No major response except for: "we're working on it". Unacceptable.

That's both crazy and annoying, but having been with T-Mobile for a few years I can't say I'm surprised. They've been last to the party more often than not when it comes to updates. Do you know if T-Mobile has pushed the October update to the T-Mobile (non-unlocked) variant of this device?? I bet they haven't yet.
I just successfully forced the update, see my new thread here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s20-fe/help/successfully-forced-october-update-t4183325
