[Q] No Access To Custom Ringtones - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I use an app called Ringtone Randomizer to do exactly what is sounds like it does... It's always worked perfectly, until I updated my phone to 5.1 (rooted)...
I can no longer see my custom ringtones through the app, regardless of where I try saving them on the phone.
I've tried several similar apps, all with the same result.
I've just tried setting a custom ringtone to a contact in my contacts and that also no longer sees the custom tones.
Has something changed with Android? Could I have done something wrong? Can anyone suggest anything to try?

Since 5. 1 I have just put my ringtones and notifications here and have never had an issue. not sure about your randomizer program

I've tried them there too, still no joy...
Should have mentioned maybe that I'm rooted, though it didn't make a difference on 5 when I was rooted...

Have you tried clearing the app data for Ringtone Randomizer?
Also if you haven't already go into Sound settings, maybe you need to change your ringtone in there where it will likely ask what app you'd like to use as the default ringtone app.

I had tried that, but it gets cleared when you remove the app anyway...
You don't have to set which app to use for ringtones, but I've just looked at changing it manually, and that also only shows the stock tones and not my custom tones...

So to test I downloaded it and I can see the ringtones I downloaded in randomizer as well as in media storage... It could be media scanner isn't working right. Try clearing app data on the media storage app then reboot, see if that fixes it. I'll keep looking around for stuff, but at least we can confirm that you should be able to see your custom tones.

Okay, so next thing I want you to try is renaming the custom ringtones so that there are no spaces in the file name. If that doesn't work let me know what type of audio file they are (mp3, .ogg).

It's not just the ringtone randomizer app btw, it's anything that let's you use custom notification tones too, when you choose Media Storage to pick a tone, it just shows the stock tones..

Just tried that, some didn't have any spaces anyway, but tried some others...
They're all MP3's... I've always used MP3s and these are the same files I've used for years too, and they do still play in the music player etc (when browsing/opening via ES Explorer)

Right, I know. I somebody in another forum found that removing the spaces from the file name helped.
No problem, I realize how frustrating this must me. Recently had someone help me with a tough issue and decided I should do that too. I know enough that maybe I can save someone a headache or two and maybe even teach them something too.
No dice, I'll keep checking in a couple minutes gotta scoot over to my next class, but I'll be back.

Thanks I'm a network manager and have worked in IT for years, so I'm the same with PC's etc, but no expert when it comes to troubleshooting on this level with Android

Also, when I try setting a custom notification tone for something else (e.g. Email) and use ES Explorer to browse for it rather than Media Storage, it pops up saying Wrong File Type. Please Select Again...
Just Googled that error and found the following site that suggests there's a nomedia file in the ringtones folder, but it's not showing that in ES File Explorer

I did, there isn't a .nomedia file in the usual ringtones folder, or in sdcard\media\audio\ringtones but there was in the root of sdcard, so I deleted that, rebooted and the ones in that path are now showing, but the ones in my original sdcard\ringtones still aren't...

I've obviously moved them all now lol, but it'd be good to work out why they still weren't showing where they always have in the past..

Ive still got an issue with the tones in the notifications folder... Maybe it's just Android that's changed to only look in that media folder I mentioned before?

Sweet to we got that working, I wonder why the other path didn't work. Try deleting the folder, rebooting, recreating it, reboot again (maybe?), then move a few tones in and see if it works. It's the easiest thing I can think of. Not sure what to Google for this kind of fix lol

Can't set my own custom ringtones anymore?

I recently upgraded to JH7, and realized that I can no longer use my own specific audio files as ringtones anymore...its only letting me use the stock ringtones.
When I go to Settings > Sound and Display > Voice call ringtone , the only ringtones I can choose from are the ones that came with the phone. It's the only thing that pops up. Theres nothing for me to click anymore that lets me search my android system for audio files.
Anyone know how to fix this?

I never noticed a way to browse for ringtones. What I did was create two folders on the internal storage.... one called ringtones and one called notifications. I placed my sound files in those folders, disconnect USB then I can see them in the list of choices when selecting a ringtone or notification sound.

Did you maybe apply the GPS fix that results in media scanner FC'ng? From what I can work out that is the kind of thing media scanner does on boot or remounting of the sdcard, it scans for media to add to the various areas so if it isn't running that would explain why the custom ringtones aren't showing up in the list.
Alternatively you could use My Files to browse your sdcard and set the ringtone that way.

Can you plug your phone into the computer, choose mass storage, then pull the notifications down to choose "mount" then use Windows explorer to see internal storage?

When viewing internal storage in Windows Explorer, Do you have a notifications and ringtones folder at the root? If not, create them and drop sound files in there, unplug and try again. If you already have them, see if you are able to rename the existing files or drop new ones in the folers, unplug and try again. Also try restarting the phone. If that doesn't work, I am not sure what else to do, sorry.
under /sdcard/ there should be media folder
create the following directories if they don't exist:
Code:
/sdcard/media/audio/notifications/
/sdcard/media/audio/alarms/
/sdcard/media/audio/ringtones/
Drop the audio files you want into those specific directories and they will appear in the chooser when you're in settings.
I'm having a problem with ringtones in contacts. Not able to set custom ones for contacts. Well I can set em, they just aren't used. The general ringtone is used. Idk, bout to wipe again. Any suggestion?

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think there was ever an option under "Settings > Sound and Display > Voice call ringtone" for custom sounds. I vaguely remember not being able to find it there either when I first got my phone in July. So I'm assuming the update from last week didn't "remove" this. I think the only way to set a custom ringtone is to apply it to individual contacts in the Contacts app.

I had thought the same thing a few times because I simply forgot to click Save after I chose the actual ringtone on my SD card. What happened was that I went to my contact, then I set a custom ringtone and I assumed by choosing it that I was good. But then I mistakenly hadn't clicked Save before I backed out of the Contacts app so it defaulted back to the default ringtone.
Not sure if you did the same thing as I did. Just wanted to put it out there.

Thanks, but I have saved many times with many different ringtones. In t their contact info, I can se the ringtone is set for phone, google, ect, but when they call, I get to ear the standard ringtone. They are all f ringtones I got with the zedge app. Idk.
Uhh, this thread is really old, but I found out how to bypass this problem.
If you use a the app Ringdroid (free) you can use it to set ringtones. Apparently it actually adds them to your ringtone folder because the show up in the settings menu afterwards.
Yeah. Ringdroid is all you need...

[Q] HELP random square/rectangle on home screen because of facebook/fb messenger???

A long time galaxy nexus user here, and since i think facebook 2.0 or 1.9 there have been a random rectangle the pops up when pressing back two times in a row from the firends list. Now i thought it was just my nexus, but now on the One i've been getting it too. Its easy to avoid but still annoying. Using ARHD rom. With latest facebook app.
From sense, I enter the facebook app/ fb messenger app, click the the freinds list / online tab scroll down to see who's online, press back twice to go to home screen then bam! A random reactangle appears. Now i can avoid this by pressing back once and scrolling through the timeline/ conversation list on facebook or anything inbetween the 1st back press and second back press (if you know what i mean)
Anyone at all can reproduce this?

I can't find the option now, but it was "chat heads" or something.
I have no idea what that is, but in response to BenPope, I use chat heads and no they don't do that at all.
It happens to me for some reason. I just open the facebook / messenger app. Click on the friends tab. Press back twice and then a rectangle appears.so strange

Can you guts tell me what widgets you're using or your home screen set up ? Thank you!
I tried reproducing what you said, nothing happens. It's odd that you say it happened on your nexus aswell, which would make me think its not a common bug but instead some app that you personally use which is interfering with facebook and causing the rectangle to form. Look around, close background processes and then see if it happens.
And if worst comes to worst..only click the back button....once.

I've seen this before too. It simply means the icon is selected. If we had hardware keys, hitting enter would open it. I don't quite know how to remove it though. Does tapping somewhere other than the icon deselect it?

Nothing. I did it slow, fast, but nothing happens, I return to the home screen. I just flashed a new ROM as well (paranoid) bit it didn't work on ARHD either. So I'm guessing it definitely has something to do with your phones setup. Something that you had on your nexus and have on this phone as well.

[Q] Custom Ringtones & Notifications?

Has anybody been able to get custom ringtones or notifications working? I added a file into system/media/ringtones, and another one into system/media/notifications, and neither one works. I've tried OGG and MP3. I did it in write protect off mode. They both get replaced by some default sound, but I can't actually find the sound. The file shows up in the list of ringtones/notifications.
Picking from the Settings>Sound menu doesn't seem to work at all unless I'm picking from the default tones. Even choosing to pick from Solid Explorer at that point doesn't work. The only thing that worked for me was going into Solid manually and setting it from there. The problem with this is that I can't set notification tones per app, or per contact or whatever.
Trying to see if this is a common issue before I wipe and start over.
Are you making it more complex then it needs to be? If you connect your moto X to a computer and browse the sdcard via an explorer window or similar you can just copy mp3s into the ringtone or notification directories and then select them on a per app basis. No rooting or any software required, its all built in by default.

I would just prefer to keep them in the stock location.
However, even putting them in Internal Storage doesn't work, because as I mentioned above, the only way it will let me choose a tone that's not a default one is if I do it the backwards way through Solid. It won't let me pick anything but the default tones through the apps, or through the system settings.
I got my X 3 days ago and immediately put my custom .ogg ringtones in the /ringtones and /notifications folders on the "sdcard" and have rebooted several times since and still can't choose any of them. That said, I have the same problem on the N5 I'm looking at.

Hmm, so seems like it may be a 4.4 problem. I have another X here that's still on 4.2, but the battery is dead, so I'll have to charge it and test it out later today.
So...now it's working. Not from system/media, still, but from the storage. Works on a per app basis and from system settings. I have no idea what changed from yesterday to today.

Yeah, maybe. It should have been doing that on boot, and I rebooted at least 10 times yesterday over the course of the day. I'm just glad it works now, even if I can't keep the files in the stock location.

Must be a 4.4 glitch.

Make sure you set the permissions correctly. That's probably the issue
So,
For me I was putting .mp3's into sdcard/notifications and sdcard/ringtones but when copied them to sdcard/media/audio/notifications they showed right up.
not sure why sdcard/notifications and ringtones exists (I didn't create it)

[q] How to get rid of these ads?

I have asked this twice in the beginner thread, but no one seems to have a solution for this. I've tried multiple apps like ad block plus, air push detector, different virus scanners and spyware scanners. Deleting unpopular apps and tried fixing it with settings.
These kind of ads are on top of everything, so when i get a phone call i have to click the add away (small X somewhere) before i can answer. Very frustrating!

this specific ad has no X so i have to tap 'no thanks' and that opens the browser with a sketchy site called mobifun or something
long pressing the ad also does nothing

you should only backup your personal/media files (pictures, video, songs etc etc..) and start over from a fresh install. Restoring /data from a nandroid backup could also restore the malware if your issue is caused by this.

use this as a taskmgr, it shows all processes. And if you don't find anything, just go for a factory reset. Save all of your photos/music/documents/videos etc. to your PC. But don't backup your apps because one of them might have poisoned the phone.

can you see something suspicious in the running/cached processes? Use Android Tuner Free to look at them.

thanks, but what i meant was. In that app, im looking in taskmanager.
Im not finding anything suspicious but i do see a lot of things that i dont know what it is
but if i theoretically delete all apps will that also delete the malware?
im hesitant to do factory reset ofcourse i want that to be the last resort

don't just uninstall something you don't know what it is. If someone could know what app caused this ad, it's you. You know what app you last installed before the ad started to show up. So if uninstalling that app doesn't help, there is no other option than either search through your entire device or make a factory reset
factory reset is not that scary, just backup your media files and then reset the phone. Restore media files, re-install your apps (legit apps only) and you are done. Fast and easy. :good:

Two problems I've noticed

Had my S10e (T-Mobile) for 5 days now and really like it! But, right away I noticed that (1) I could not install my own mp3 or ogg notifications. Posted on another forum and got some great suggestions, but nothing worked so I did a chat with a Samsung technician, even gave him permission to log into my phone, but after 40 minutes of work he could not get this to work properly either. He promised to send the problem up the line as a known bug and said he hoped they would get it corrected on the next update. A side issue to this is that sometimes when I tried to add ringtones the software worked but other times it said the same files were the wrong type and to try again. The second issue I'm having is that (2) when I initiate a soft reset I lose a lot of my permission and notification settings for individual apps and have to do resets. Very frustrating. If anyone has workarounds for either of these issues I would be happy to try your suggestions!

For the .ogg files try putting them in a folder named Media. Within that folder make Ringtones and Notifications and place your sound files in those. I have it set up that way on my s10+ on the external SD card and it works fine.

That's a bummer sorry I couldn't help. I had the same problem with a previous Samsung device and that worked for me. The only other thing I can think of is a factory reset and set the phone up from scratch without restoring any data from a previous backup but even that isn't a guarantee. I hope you get things worked out.
Thats odd, notifications work for me, have you tried placing the file in the interal drive in the notifications folder?
Try putting those files in a folder and add a new file and name it ".nomedia", I've had the issue before and that should help.
Work for me too on my s10e

I've tried placing them everywhere I could think of and putting them in folders with all the names I could think of. When I try to make a change it offers the option of Media Storage (which doesn't show any except for the pre-installed tones) or ES File Explorer (which won't open except to a handful of music folders). When I try putting the files in one of those recognized folders and click on one of them, I get a pop-up message saying it doesn't work with that file, please choose another OR when I choose a file, nothing happens at all. What file explorer are you using?

I'm using "my files " the Samsung one
Works for me too. Just put it straight into the notifications folder.
It's in my list twice because I originally used Zedge to download it. I copied it into the notifications folder to test purposes.View attachment 4725676View attachment 4725677

Thank you all for your support and suggestions. Since nothing seemed to help, I bit the bullet and did a factory reset. Now everything seems to be working normally!
