Had my S10e (T-Mobile) for 5 days now and really like it! But, right away I noticed that (1) I could not install my own mp3 or ogg notifications. Posted on another forum and got some great suggestions, but nothing worked so I did a chat with a Samsung technician, even gave him permission to log into my phone, but after 40 minutes of work he could not get this to work properly either. He promised to send the problem up the line as a known bug and said he hoped they would get it corrected on the next update. A side issue to this is that sometimes when I tried to add ringtones the software worked but other times it said the same files were the wrong type and to try again. The second issue I'm having is that (2) when I initiate a soft reset I lose a lot of my permission and notification settings for individual apps and have to do resets. Very frustrating. If anyone has workarounds for either of these issues I would be happy to try your suggestions!

For the .ogg files try putting them in a folder named Media. Within that folder make Ringtones and Notifications and place your sound files in those. I have it set up that way on my s10+ on the external SD card and it works fine.

That's a bummer sorry I couldn't help. I had the same problem with a previous Samsung device and that worked for me. The only other thing I can think of is a factory reset and set the phone up from scratch without restoring any data from a previous backup but even that isn't a guarantee. I hope you get things worked out.
Thats odd, notifications work for me, have you tried placing the file in the interal drive in the notifications folder?
Try putting those files in a folder and add a new file and name it ".nomedia", I've had the issue before and that should help.
Work for me too on my s10e

I've tried placing them everywhere I could think of and putting them in folders with all the names I could think of. When I try to make a change it offers the option of Media Storage (which doesn't show any except for the pre-installed tones) or ES File Explorer (which won't open except to a handful of music folders). When I try putting the files in one of those recognized folders and click on one of them, I get a pop-up message saying it doesn't work with that file, please choose another OR when I choose a file, nothing happens at all. What file explorer are you using?

I'm using "my files " the Samsung one
Works for me too. Just put it straight into the notifications folder.
It's in my list twice because I originally used Zedge to download it. I copied it into the notifications folder to test purposes.View attachment 4725676View attachment 4725677

I am pulling my frickin hair out trying to figure this, so I am asking for help.
I am running xRom, everything up-to-date, and the only 3rd party messaging app I have is SMS Popup, which has been disbaled throughout my entire problem.
The issue is that whenever I get a text it is playing a full song out off my sdcard, despite my ringtone being set to "Don't Panic" in the settings. I erased the song w/ Linda File Manager, and after that it chose a random tone to play, not the one I had set. This is more acceptable to me since it is an actual messaging tone (1 or 2 notes) but I am just worried it is going to choose another song at some point, which is way too long when you are texting back and forth with someone.
Any ideas?
Edit: Ok I opened SMS Popup (disabled already) to double check it was turned off, and now it vibrates, which really sucks, I am rarely close enough to hear or feel the vibrations...
Try doing a wipe and then flash. That might fix it. If you have a partitioned sd card, try repartioning it...

That sounds like an extreme but it will work
You know that there are 2 places you can set your notifications from right? Once is menu/settings/sounds and display and the other one is when you open up messaging app hit menu/settings/notification settings,
See if that has anything to do with your problem before you start nuking your partitions
Good luck

This led me to the answer, thanks. What had happened was in the messaging application at some point I had selected the music, not realizing the two weren't tied together, which would make too much sense. Anyhow, I erased the song, so now nothing was selected, so for some reason it was cycling thru the different ringtones, which makes no sense, but whatever. So I set it back to the "Default Ringtone" option, and now it works fine. Thank God I didn't have to wipe, I probably would have just dealt with it for another few days, cause wiping stresses me worse than this **** did.
I recently upgraded to JH7, and realized that I can no longer use my own specific audio files as ringtones anymore...its only letting me use the stock ringtones.
When I go to Settings > Sound and Display > Voice call ringtone , the only ringtones I can choose from are the ones that came with the phone. It's the only thing that pops up. Theres nothing for me to click anymore that lets me search my android system for audio files.
Anyone know how to fix this?

I never noticed a way to browse for ringtones. What I did was create two folders on the internal storage.... one called ringtones and one called notifications. I placed my sound files in those folders, disconnect USB then I can see them in the list of choices when selecting a ringtone or notification sound.

Did you maybe apply the GPS fix that results in media scanner FC'ng? From what I can work out that is the kind of thing media scanner does on boot or remounting of the sdcard, it scans for media to add to the various areas so if it isn't running that would explain why the custom ringtones aren't showing up in the list.
Alternatively you could use My Files to browse your sdcard and set the ringtone that way.

Can you plug your phone into the computer, choose mass storage, then pull the notifications down to choose "mount" then use Windows explorer to see internal storage?

When viewing internal storage in Windows Explorer, Do you have a notifications and ringtones folder at the root? If not, create them and drop sound files in there, unplug and try again. If you already have them, see if you are able to rename the existing files or drop new ones in the folers, unplug and try again. Also try restarting the phone. If that doesn't work, I am not sure what else to do, sorry.
under /sdcard/ there should be media folder
create the following directories if they don't exist:
Code:
/sdcard/media/audio/notifications/
/sdcard/media/audio/alarms/
/sdcard/media/audio/ringtones/
Drop the audio files you want into those specific directories and they will appear in the chooser when you're in settings.
I'm having a problem with ringtones in contacts. Not able to set custom ones for contacts. Well I can set em, they just aren't used. The general ringtone is used. Idk, bout to wipe again. Any suggestion?

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think there was ever an option under "Settings > Sound and Display > Voice call ringtone" for custom sounds. I vaguely remember not being able to find it there either when I first got my phone in July. So I'm assuming the update from last week didn't "remove" this. I think the only way to set a custom ringtone is to apply it to individual contacts in the Contacts app.

I had thought the same thing a few times because I simply forgot to click Save after I chose the actual ringtone on my SD card. What happened was that I went to my contact, then I set a custom ringtone and I assumed by choosing it that I was good. But then I mistakenly hadn't clicked Save before I backed out of the Contacts app so it defaulted back to the default ringtone.
Not sure if you did the same thing as I did. Just wanted to put it out there.

Thanks, but I have saved many times with many different ringtones. In t their contact info, I can se the ringtone is set for phone, google, ect, but when they call, I get to ear the standard ringtone. They are all f ringtones I got with the zedge app. Idk.
Uhh, this thread is really old, but I found out how to bypass this problem.
If you use a the app Ringdroid (free) you can use it to set ringtones. Apparently it actually adds them to your ringtone folder because the show up in the settings menu afterwards.
Yeah. Ringdroid is all you need...

My problem was with the first rooting process saving all of your settings as they were and not letting you change them. Wifi, ringtones, gps, everything.
I have found a couple threads on this topic, but none of them provide a clear cut solution mostly because they have workarounds related to disabling notifications on the computer side.
The issue is I have a Mac, so instead of a notification, every time I connect the phone, the phone turns on "development mode" and then I see an emulated CD on my desktop and the application pops up.
I want to disable or delete this emulated CD. I would like a way to do this on the phone side, perhaps just disabling a service or application. I am not rooted and don't plan on it.
TIA

Anyone?
delete the iso from the phone
it's in /etc/PCTOOL.iso
use a root capable file explorer.
You'll need to be rooted.

FWIW (and I don't think this will help you necessarily), I didn't delete the file. I renamed it using a Root Explorer from PCTOOL.ISO to BackupPCTOOL.ISO and rebooted. I figured I'd leave it just in case.... Good luck.
I've also:
1) disabled HTC Sync Manager from All Apps
2) deleted PC Synchronization.apk
3) deleted HTC Sync Manager.apk
4) deleted AndroidHTCSync.apk
I want to be able to launch HTC Sync Manager manually when I DO want to sync stuff (mostly my music), but not every time I connect my phone just to charge it. Sigh.
You also have to disable kernel write protection. If you don't, it comes back. Minor details....
I don't even se that file in my etc folder.. :/
Has anybody been able to get custom ringtones or notifications working? I added a file into system/media/ringtones, and another one into system/media/notifications, and neither one works. I've tried OGG and MP3. I did it in write protect off mode. They both get replaced by some default sound, but I can't actually find the sound. The file shows up in the list of ringtones/notifications.
Picking from the Settings>Sound menu doesn't seem to work at all unless I'm picking from the default tones. Even choosing to pick from Solid Explorer at that point doesn't work. The only thing that worked for me was going into Solid manually and setting it from there. The problem with this is that I can't set notification tones per app, or per contact or whatever.
Trying to see if this is a common issue before I wipe and start over.
Are you making it more complex then it needs to be? If you connect your moto X to a computer and browse the sdcard via an explorer window or similar you can just copy mp3s into the ringtone or notification directories and then select them on a per app basis. No rooting or any software required, its all built in by default.

I would just prefer to keep them in the stock location.
However, even putting them in Internal Storage doesn't work, because as I mentioned above, the only way it will let me choose a tone that's not a default one is if I do it the backwards way through Solid. It won't let me pick anything but the default tones through the apps, or through the system settings.
I got my X 3 days ago and immediately put my custom .ogg ringtones in the /ringtones and /notifications folders on the "sdcard" and have rebooted several times since and still can't choose any of them. That said, I have the same problem on the N5 I'm looking at.

Hmm, so seems like it may be a 4.4 problem. I have another X here that's still on 4.2, but the battery is dead, so I'll have to charge it and test it out later today.
So...now it's working. Not from system/media, still, but from the storage. Works on a per app basis and from system settings. I have no idea what changed from yesterday to today.

Yeah, maybe. It should have been doing that on boot, and I rebooted at least 10 times yesterday over the course of the day. I'm just glad it works now, even if I can't keep the files in the stock location.
I'm on 4.2.2....But have no trouble using Zedge or whatever to download ringtones and notification sounds. Then change them in settings.
Must be a 4.4 glitch.

Make sure you set the permissions correctly. That's probably the issue
So,
For me I was putting .mp3's into sdcard/notifications and sdcard/ringtones but when copied them to sdcard/media/audio/notifications they showed right up.
not sure why sdcard/notifications and ringtones exists (I didn't create it)
Is there any way at all to allow user apps write access on external storage, without root? This is one of the most infuriating features ever added in Android and I just can't understand what they were thinking by essentially making external storage unusable by anything other than pre installed apps.
Right now this is the only thing that might force me to root if there's no other way. It's not something I've ever looked into as every device I've had since gingerbread has been rooted, so it hasn't affected me until now even though it's been a thing for years. Even if I could just get my file manager working with write access I'd be happy, I hate Samsung's my files haha.

Yeah I'm not getting permission requests, other than the storage request which only includes internal.
FX file explorer tells me this device does not support the android storage access framework.
Strange, FX explorer reads and writes fine the media card as it names it. Try different sd card?

What do you mean by "as it names it" ? I don't think it's the card, all system apps seem to write to it fine.
I'll attach a screen of the error.
Are you using FX on the note 9, stock? And can you make new files and folders anywhere on the external SD from within FX and not just in it's own folder in sdcard/android/data/nextapp.fx?

Funny thing is I saw a video on YouTube saying just that, but my natural distrust of that kind of thing on YouTube got the better of me haha, I saw no "documents" In my disabled list so gave up.
But when you mentioned it too I went back to look, there was nothing called documents, but I went through my entire list of about 90 disabled apps and found one called "files" enabled it, and now it works.
