[Q] T-Mobile Nexus 6 on Verizon Upgrade to 5.1 - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am a Verizon Wireless customer who bought a T-Mobile Nexus 6 back when Verizon didn't sell it. It has been working great on Verizon's network. However, I haven't gotten the OTA for the 5.1 update yet and was wondering if it was related to the VW network vs TM phone. My phone is as I received it (meaning no unlocking or rooting). I've been an android user since the Thunderbolt but haven't dived into tinkering as I'm nervous to get my feet wet. Any suggestions on how to proceed or answers to why I don't get the OTA would be helpful. Thanks!

I'm not 100% positive on this, but I don't think LMY47E was ever pushed to VZW N6's. The reason being that LMY47E is the shipping software for VZW purchased devices. So you'll either have to unlock your bootloader and fastboot flash the factory image, or live with 5.0.1. I think...

Or, quite possibly, just do the pull the Sim card routine and possibly get the LMY47D OTA update.

So because I'm on Verizon's network and they haven't pushed it to their stock of phones I wouldn't get it? I'll try the pull the SIM card route. Thanks for the suggestion.

What @Evolution_Freak said. If you pull your SIM, there's a good chance that you'll get D. But the radio on E (98R) is supposedly optimized for Verizon. The only way you'll get E is what I suggested above. With the 95R radio from LMY47D, you may have some sub-optimal connections to cellular service.

Sorry new at this so What is the pull the sim card routine? pull the sim and hard reboot or pull and factory restore?

Neither. Shut phone down. Remove SIM. Boot up and connect to WiFi. Wait for OTA to download. Install OTA. Shut phone down. Reinsert SIM. Boot up and enjoy.

Tried the suggestion and pulled sim and restarted but no update so how long should you normally have to wait

You could give it as much time as you could spare, to be sure. Maybe overnight? Otherwise consider unlocking and doing the factory image thing.

[Q] Rooting with no SIM?

So, my N6 is supposed to arrive on Tuesday. I am currently using a Galaxy S3 on Verizon. I am going to trim my SIM card and pop it into the nexus when ready.
My question is, can I put on a custom recovery, root, decrypt, update to 5.0.1, etc all without utilizing the SIM? Is there anything specific other than using mobile cell/data services that are going to fail from not having a SIM? I know that when the SIM accidentally pops out of my GS3 the phone pops up a window saying a reboot is necessary to try to find the SIM and there is only a single OK/Reboot button and no other options.
I want to try to do all the main imaging and rooting work while still utilizing my GS3 as my phone, and then when I have the N6 ready I nandroid backup both phones and then pop the SIM over. I did pick up a nano to micro SIM adapter in case I need to move the SIM back to the GS3.
Well, I guess if no one knows I will give it a try when I get the phone this week and update you all on if it works.
you can do whatever you want with it without ever putting a sim card inti it. the sim card is only for your phone/data provider. and has nothing to do with rooting your phone.

Cool. I figured as much but had not heard anyone that had done it. I wasn't sure if there was some technical requirement to have the phone activated before root/recovery took place or anything. All my previous phones came from carriers so they were all activated before leaving the store and before being rooted.

na, ive done that. my sgs4 was never with a sim. my n4 and n5 are without a sim at the moment, the n4 and n5 were rooted before i even booted it the first time.
I did it with my new N6 because I had to wait as well to get new Sim.
Unlocked bootloader, rioted in encrypted. Screwed it up and started all over again. I think I flashed the factory image 5 times that night trying new stuff

My GPS model shipped with 5.0 and updated to 5.01 after a couple hrs on wifi. I rooted and flashed a 5.1 rom shortly after so I don't know if or when it would have updated to 5.1.

all nexus 6 are getting 5.1, regardless what carrier youre on. all nexus 6 in the US are identicle. when buying via verizon, itll just have a verizon logo on it, thats all.
I just received my replacement phone (which I purchased from Motorola but had the shutting down while battery still displayed 50-90% issue), put my VZW SIM into it and can tell you that on my phone, the OTA progression went from 5.0 to 5.01 to 5.1 "LMY47D".
Just an FYI: After it flashed to "LMY47D" and used it for a couple days (VZW "VoLTE" worked fine with this), I went to the Google factory image page and flashed "LMY47E" as that is the version that comes on the Verizon variant, factory reset, and when I set the phone back up, the phone automatically downloaded My Verizon as well as Verizon Visual Voice Mail automatically once it signed into the Play Store. I do not know if "LMY47D" would have downloaded those Verizon apps or not after a factory reset with a Verizon SIM in it, so someone else will have to chime in on that.

the provider apps get installed because of your sim card. can always first boot without the sim card installed, that way it wont install provider apps.
Received my Google 64 GB white Nexus, popped in my Verizon SIM no problem. I set up my phone over wifi first "it came stock 5.0" , powered off inserted SIM, then powered on, while phone was on wifi it updated to 5.1 Lollipop, 4G works fine.

New to flashing

Hey! So I've had very little experience in flashing custom roms and I have a question. I have a Verizon Nexus 6 (Verizon branded), I know that besides the stamp on the back its the exact same phone as the one directly from the google store or motorola. If I flash a google factory image onto it will I start getting OTA updates directly from google instead of waiting for Verizon's un-godly long updates as long as I don't mess with rooting it or installing a custom recovery. Also will I be able to flash back the Verizon rom and get Verizons OTA's if i ever decide for some reason I need to and also, where would I find the Verizon roms for it? I know where to find googles factory roms but not verizons. Thank you for all your help, I've switched from iPhone 6 and have always jailbroke it so I need all the help I can get with this.
Let me attempt to find it for you

no. you, using verizon, have to use a verizon sim in your phone. that verizon sim is whst tells google which update to send you(verizon does not update the n6, google does). you can flash whatever factory image you want, but your sim card is what tells google to send you a verizon update.
Okay but...

No, I don't think thats it, I'm new but I'm pretty sure thats not the case because how come when people buy it factory unlocked, but lets say for example put a att sim in it, they still get updates from google which is the newest faster than those who bought phone through att. Its the carrier that sends out updates not google in that case . Even on motorola website it says "Factory releases software>carrier modifies rom>carrier sends out update" under their update status page. Thats why carrier bought phones have slower updates than factory phones. Which is why I asked "If i flash a google "factory unlocked" nexus 6 rom will i then get updates from google directly and not verizon".
If you have a Verizon sim in your phone you will only get updates from VZ. If you pull the sim and go wifi there are a good number of reports of people pulling from google.
I have seen that reported several times. Not tried it myself, I just flash myself and skip user do I don't wipe data.

The carriers do not send out the updates. At first, all nexus 6 got the same roms. Then verizon and tmobile decided they wanted to approve the updates before they were sent. Then, verizon and tmobile added stuff to their builds, but google still send them out. If you have a verizon or tmob sim, google send you those updates, otherwise, google sends you a generic update.
Everything changed with the nexus 6. Updates didn't used to be linked to sim cards, but now they are.
But in answer to your question, if you flash a generic rom and have a version sim card, you won't get any updates because google will detect your verizon sim and not send generic updates, and you won't be on a verizon rom, so you won't be able to get those updates either.
FYI, even if you bought an n6 from play, if it had 5.0 on it, put a verizon sim in it, you would get verizon updates.
But you're right, on pretty much every other (non-nexus) phone in the world, the carrier sends the updates and what you suggested would work on those phones. Just not here.

You may need to do a factory reset and then pop in the sim but yep it will work just fine ....

Thanks for reply ...I am running purenexus but will factory reset if necessary.
Depends on the rom. Stock they use same factory image.
I had to go back to stock AFTER putting the VZW sim in the phone - it worked, but would take forever to connect and would never hold LTE for more than a few minutes.
After flashing back to stock it all seemed to correct itself.

Galaxy note 9 at&t unlocked cant update using tmobile sim please help!

I have had a Galaxy Note 9 (SMN960U) that is AT&T unlocked for the past couple years. I only used a T-Mobile SIM since I am in a Family Plan and have not been able to update the phone at all since 2018. I've contacted both Samsung support as well as AT&T support and they told me that they would need to lock the phone back to AT&T for the updates to be installed. Is there anyone who has had this issue before and can help me update the phone to Android Pie? I've read some possible solutions is to insert an AT&T SIM into the phone or flash an unlocked firmware version but I'm not familiar with either. Please reply as soon as possible for anyone that can offer assistance.
Instead of writing a long how to, go to YouTube and search flashing firmware with Odin

Do you know by any chance if inserting an AT&T SIM will allow me to update the phone then reinsert my T-Mobile SIM?
I can't speak for AT&T, but I can say that the inverse works. I had an unlocked Note9 that I moved from T-Mobile to AT&T, and could no longer receive updates. I inserted an active T-Mobile SIM, rebooted, and was immediately able to update. It had to be an active T-Mobile SIM, or the switch wouldn't work. I just did it right now, so could work for you. It's a lot easier than trying to flash firmware.

Do you have any idea if ordering a prepaid AT&T SIM and activating it would also help receive the updates on the phone?

I would assume it would work if that SIM has service, both of the SIMs I used were prepaid. You'll know if it recognized the SIM, as after the reboot it'll show the AT&T splash on startup. If it doesn't, then the current state of the AT&T SIM won't work. That happened to me, I first tried a T-Mobile SIM whose service had lapsed.
If you do update, just make sure to keep going through the update process repeatedly. You have to install an update, let it reboot, and check for updates each time. You can't just jump directly to the latest version, which I think is part of the problem.
