[POLL] Most used kernels - Nexus 4 General

Hi,
I'm creating this post to see which kernel is most used and why.
Vote which kernel you use and write in the comments why you choose that kernel (more battery/more performance, dt2w, etc...).

Currently I'm using hellscore. It gives me more battery than Franco... What about other people?

Do you need to have 'Stock' in your list of options?

With default settings? I gave it a shot the other day but drained my battery fast.

Nope. I'm using gorilla p's batmax profile with some changes.

If i may ask , what was your SOT on other kernels before Hellscore with Bat max profile ?

About 2h/2h30m with SimpleAOSP. I tried hells doctor and ak

semaphore on 5.0.1 stock+xposed.
I tried franco and hellscore but with semaphore everything is a lot smoother. battery is good too

I am using the newest Resurrection with the integrated Kernel. The Rom is nice, but I think it is time to change the Kernel.
Few days ago I was on cm 12 with Hells Kernel and an SOT round about 3-4 hours.

I think this poll is kind of biased. Since it was posted in the "General" section, we can assume that the most popular Kernel from this section is going to be winning (Hells-Core). If this poll was posted in the "Android Development" section, most likely "Quanta" would win. Same for "Original Android Development" section, most likely "Franco".

This thread is not a development, so it is in the correct section.
And you could be wrong. Hellsdoctor, nash are also great kernel in "Android Development". In "Original Android Development" there are also AK, Semaphore, Unleashed, Matr1x, etc...

Semaphore, because dev's patches made it into mainline Linux kernel, I don't know of any other 'kernel devs' who made it so far. He also wrote the 'new dt2w'

I wish there was a repository of kernels, like a Wikipedia. Where the kernel developer might have a biography, their work listed, whether they've been published, and by whom, their work in the community, and finally, a breakdown of what makes their kernel special. Right now, it is impossible to objectively know which kernel works best for your usage pattern without trying out every single one for a full charge cycle. That is ridiculous.

But you can't know that is the best kernel for you without testing. Every person uses the phone differently. You can't expect to have the same performance/battery as others.
I've created this thread so that people can post which kernel they use and why, so if and when we want to try others kernel, we have a little info about the usage.

No, that's not really what I had in mind. What you linked to is simply a list of links to every kernel available. One could do the same by going to the Android Development section and going through the links on that page.
What I was attempting to describe above, is a standardized repository. A standardized system for descriptions, changes, and comparisons to other kernels in the form of screenshot based evidence across any number of benchmarks. All this information exists in some way, somewhere deep in these countless threads, and this is the number one complaint that non XDA frequenters have: everything is so massively disorganized that unless you are on the forums every single day, should something important crop up in one of the threads, you may very well miss it completely, only finding out about it later in the form of heresy in another thread, and then having to task yourself with digging through the threads looking for a needle in a haystack in an attempt to either disprove or prove what you heard someone somewhere say.
The fact is, a forum is a great platform to foster the development of these kernels, but it is a terrible platform for the organization and presentation. What I'm describing above requires something outside of the XDA framework, it's not as simple as creating a new thread.

Faux123 is the best kernel imho!

Using Semaphore since a lot of time, great kernel.

Quanta V3.... awesome

Seriously? "Best ..." threads are not allowed on XDA as you will get 5 answers and 6 different opinions. If you want to know which is 'best' for you, then download them all and test them all. Alternatively, read the comments in the ROM threads, read all the other threads and decide on 2 or 3 that you want to test properly.

All this "best rom/kernel" thing is unnecessary. Many performance related tweaks differ from device to device, depending on your variant, the apps you installed, the options you set and many others that I don't even know.
Same options and kernels get different performances for same devices so you should try it out yourself.
And you should read the rules of XDA!
Like simon said such threads are not allowed.

We can talk about ROMs, kernels and their performances BUT you are not allowed to open a "BEST ROM OR KERNEL" thread.
And BTW, if you want to know more about ROMs and their performances you can directly go to the related thread and look for which information is important for you.

Actually, you're 100% wrong. XDA is a Developers forum, not a helpdesk for noobs. If you doubt that then I'd suggest you PM some of the moderators. There are rules in place for a reason and, yes, help is given where needed - but still the primary focus of XDA is development. Ask a sensible question or a real problem and you'll be fine, but you ought to accept the criticism for an ill-advised and unnecessary post rather than getting all "I deserve help".
Also, if you actualy stay around here for a while and contribute, you will very quickly become as bored as the rest of us of seeing the same questions asked over and over again because people are too lazy or too stubborn to search and read before posting.
After testing couple of roms and kernels now i am on cm 10.1.3 rc2 with iodak v8 kernel and all the games I've tried are running very smooth and nice. But after some gaming (30-45 min) the heat is too high and it kinda has lag spikes.

Is there any way to recreate the "Render Effect" Feature from CM7

Anyone who used CM7 might recall a feature buried in the settings (under display if I recall correctly) called Render Effect. It allowed you to alter the temperature of screen color as well as flat-out kill all colors but one. This allowed you to make the display go completely blue, or completely green or completely red.
Apart from being a nifty party trick, this was a feature I used routinely. Changing the display to red allowed me to use my navigation while driving at night and still preserve my natural night vision. It also was a nice thing to have enabled when the phone went off in the middle of the night.
So, does anyone know of an app/mod out there that allows us to achieve this? I really don't know why this feature was never permanently merged into the CM base, it appears to have disappeared in CM9 I think.
I have stumbled across some apps developed by ChainFire that appear to do this but unfortunately the app description specifically says it is for FroYo or Gingerbread devices only... see here

Twilight is what you are looking for: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.urbandroid.lux
Yes, there is also lux, but twilight ist free
I'm also interested in this feature, and I've tried the "filter" apps including twilight and it is not the same at all.
Is this something that can only be done at a low level or can it happen in an app?

That's not from Trickster. It shows options available in the kernel you have installed. Your kernel supports color control, that's why you see it. If you install a kernel that doesn't support color, the options won't be there.
Yah I'm aware of that @RoyJ im saying no other kernel OFFERS the control And this kernel does.

Clearly says Linaro Kernel.
I don't know how many kernel developers use the Linaro toolchain to build their kernels.
Guess there's only one then. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
Edit: I could be mistaken, but I'm pretty sure where it says Linaro is showing the toolchain the kernel was compiled with. The name of the kernel is blacked out. For example in my trickster with my kernel, the name of the kernel is where his is blacked out and where his says Linaro mine says Crosstool.

Maybe a noob question but I've searched both XDA and google all over so I'll just ask here, does anyone know what the different GPU governors do exactly ? I've been looking for a source that explains that.... I am just looking to conserve battery better for example if I play a game as that just sucks battery life quick. I've been experimenting with the diff ones available and running it at 389 powersave etc. Just wondering also anyone's recommendations on that. Ive never really looked into it or asked before. I appreciate it.
Note*** also battery life if I don't play a game and use GPU extensively is crazy good, amazing job on this kernel @RIPng. I am both amazed and impressed everyday with the battery life I am getting. I'll share my exact numbers + setup in the main thread later... I am still on R20 atm.

I have always used Westwood also since I first started using anything made by faux. It has always produced good results. Good with the benchmarks also. here documentation on westwood
faux recommends it. here's a basic summary of it:
"The resultant performance gains in efficiency, without undue sacrifice of fairness, friendliness, and stability have been reported in numerous papers that can be found on The TCP WESTWOOD Home Page. Significant efficiency gains can be obtained for large leaky dynamic pipes, while maintaining fairness. Under a more appropriate criterion for friendliness, i.e. "opportunistic friendliness", TCP Westwood is shown to have good, and controllable, friendliness."

What benchmark app do you use to get this? To me Illinois seems to be extremely efficient, wasting very little bandwidth and minimizing packet loss. I have been using high speed before i read up on these, and my downloads were noticeably faster than cubic, but i know there's a million variables that could affect that. That's why i would appreciate a recommendation for a benchmark app or whatever you are using.

Grab a terminal app from the Play Store. Then once you have a session running type SU then hit enter and grant it SU rights when asked.
Then type sbin/lkconfig and a menu will pop up that's super easy to understand and from there just select CPU Boost then N for no.

[FIX] [APP] [5.0] Moto G Minfree Fixer

With this commit which is merged since the 07/Feb/2015 Nightly the app became redundant. Thanks for your feedback!
Hi everyone,
I wrote a small app for all those having RAM/reloading issues on 5.0/CM12 based ROMs. The app was originally developed for the 4G variant but should also work on the "normal" Moto G. The source is here and a direct link to the pre-compiled app can be found attached to this post.
But what does this app do?
In short, the cause of frequent app redraws seems to be wrongly set permissions of two files which avoid the Low Memory Killer to work as intended. Apart from that the default values in those files are set too high. A long explanation can be found here.
This app fixes both problems and automates basically everything after the device has booted up: It applies right permissions to /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/minfree (660) and writes reasonable LMK values into it. It is meant as a convenient way to fix the problem without having to hassle around with shell scripts.
I wrote it modular, so auto apply and LMK value writing can be switched off, of course

Wow, thanks for your feedback - I'm actually overwhelmed
I uploaded a new version which fixes a memory leak (oh, the irony! ).
@srisurya95: Yes, I was actually thinking about the same for a while but then came to the conclusion that it's my own work and it's a fix for a common ROM problem, so why not post it here?
Cheers!
thanks, sir. downloading now

i do agree with @BlueFlame4
as per original development sub forum definition the thread qualifies all the aspects.
The Original Development area is intended for posting of new work, which isn’t derived from existing work on XDA (in whole or significant part). The reason for this is that feedback from a huge number of users indicated their frustration in finding the cutting-edge development taking place to bring new features to their devices, particularly when the first few pages were full of threads for various very similar ROMs. This makes it harder for users and developers alike to find the actual development, usually going on in threads which are less attractive to less experienced users.

I'm actually not familiar with GPE/non-GPE since I only own a Moto G 4G which doesn't have that distinction.
@ all: Well, the 220 permissions are actually intended by Google but CM broke something else (namely the Low Memory Killer) so the 660 permissions act as a workaround. I'll look into it this weekend.
work fine! thanks
Installed on Stock 5.0.2 firmware, testing it now, so far so good.
Used and suggested on my topic of euphoria os rom
It seems that the ram is a little better now but..
Example:
I open whatsapp, line, then hangout and bum! Whatsapp and line need refresh when i re-open it xD
If i don't open hangout, i can open another app without have that problem. However, i really don't understand lollipop ._.
If i have 300 or more Ram Mb free, why it kill app randomly -.-

As far as I can see, killing/not killing on Lollipop seems to be app-dependant, or kinda like that. I saw a review of a 3 GB phone which kept in memory asphalt 8 but killed Chrome every time... and more than 1.3 GB of memory was still free. :silly:
